A word from Mari Vanna
Once upon a time in Moscow & St. Petersburg, a mythical woman named Mari Vanna welcomed diners into her home with open arms, feeding them traditional Russian fare on her finest china and linens. All were welcome and those who frequent were graced with a key of their own to return whenever they wish to this cozy retreat. Now in present day New York City on a popular block between the Flatiron and Gramercy, Mari Vanna has taken up residency and awaits hungry New Yorkers, neighbors and tourists alike who are looking to eat, drink and be merry and finally understand what true Russian hospitality means.
The menu offers time honored Russian classics such as the flavorsome customary soup Borsch with Pampushka, Beets, Broth, Beef, Cabbage, Carrots and Potatoes served with Sour Cream in a beautiful tureen that holds enough for seconds or third. Mari Vanna is open for lunch, brunch and dinner 7 days a week.

Diner Reviews
  • "Mari Vanna was charming, pretty, comfortable, and delightfully quiet -- at lunch time. All good except the food. The herring appetizer was strange -- tasteless herring served in a glass jar, with boiled potatoes and thick black bread. Maybe good for a Russian winter, not ok for Manhattan. Chicken Stroganoff was peculiar, little strings of chicken mixed in with noodles and other items -- quite ordinary, very little flavor. This was my first visit; and honestly I'd expected more -- something like the delicious Russian Tea Room food I remember so well. Mari Vanna is just good for a quiet luncheon -- where conversation can be easily heard."

  • "I like the food at Mari Vanna. It's authentic Russian so it caters to those who like Russian food or those who like to try something new. But the real reason to go here is the amazing decoration/atmosphere (you'll forget you are in New York as soon as you step inside) and the even more amazingly friendly and professional staff."

  • "The food was great and I loved the decor. My only compliant would be that it took our waitress atleast 20 minutes to initially approach us. She was very apologetic but it was just a poor start to the night especially since it wasn't even that busy at that time."

  • "I was raised in a traditional Russian family and just recently moved out of my family home to Gramercy Park, just down the block. When I started to miss my mom's cooking, I decided to try out Mari Vanna and was very pleasantly surprised. Not only is the food reminiscent of my favorite childhood meals, but the cocktail list and service was on point as well. Have been back multiple times since and look forward to going back again soon!"

  • "My friend and I met for dinner after not seeing each other for a few years. Around 9:20 we were told that they need tour able for other people. We were moved to the bar. Also, the food did not taste good, it was way too plain."

  • "I've never gone to Moscow or St. Petersburg but I think in Mari Vanna we can feel as if we were in Russia. The waitresses, the food, the decoration... It worths! Just one complaint: the music is too loud."

  • "I am in love with this place! It feels like a russian grandmothers house, with gourmet russian cooking, made just the way a Russian family would!"

  • "Enjoyed my lunch but the open dining room in the rear is not great for a business lunch if other tables are full. Food and service were fantastic!"

  • "When you enter, you feel like you left NYC and traveled to Russa. The decoration is opulent, but it all fits. Even the waiters/waitresses are dressed in Russian clothes. The meal starts with a board of their home-made bread. The dishes are on the heavier side."

  • "Our second time there and even better this time. The food is outstanding, the portions generous but not too much, the presentations wonderful and the choice of Russian dishes extremely broad. Everything we've had there has been excellent. The dumplings are super, stuffed cabbage has great nuance and of course my wife adored the caviar. Service is attentive, friendly and helpful. The décor is very much fun. There is no chauvinistic patronizing, just a fun experience for Russian food. Definitely a gem, for no occasion or a special occasion."

  • "As Siberian I can say that their pelmeni were almost as good as Granny makes (prob. I should add that nothing will ever be). They have quite some vegetarian options, which is not so easy for Russian kitchen. I wish they had bortsch without meat too. The food tastes amazing. Atmosphere is very cute. They were playing American music from the 80s when we were there last time, but the time before that it was Soviet records, which was a bit random (great for people who know, but I was with some non-Russian friends). The staff is really friendly. We had a birthday brunch there for my friend and we did not even have to ask them to bring a cake and sing. They just heard us congratulate her and did it. Their HB song a la ruse is quite something."

  • "We went last International Women Day and they gave us a tulip. Unfortunately we would like to taste a typical russian food (khachapuri) and it wasn't possible because it was only for dinner menu..."

  • "This place is great, depending on what time of the day you go, each has its' privileges.. Lunch/brunch is absolutely amazing, everything tastes delicious. What I really loved at Mari Vanna is that they have not missed a detail for how food used to be served and in what dishes during the time that I was growing up in Russia. If you're not familiar with the country, this is a great place for an introduction as it is truly similar to the authentic experience. Definitely recommend for lunch, brunch, group gatherings or to just stop in on your own to try it out. It is also kid-friendly! In the evening, from what I hear, it turns into a great evening spot."

  • "I have been living in NYC for 2 years now and just on Monday I first visited the restaurant! I came here with two of my friends for a dinner reservation at 7:30 P.M. and we left only around 12:30 A.M. and only because we had to work next day. Food is great, Russian cuisine and reminded me of home so so much as I am from Eastern Europe. Our server was amazing, very welcoming and kind, always making sure we are fine. We were also given a complimentary drinks from the restaurant - just for girls, which is very Russian welcoming sign. Moreover, the music old school and the ambiance just great as all the decor inside is like being in a more high end place in Russia, or maybe just your grandma's house. A lot of international people too! AMAZING!!"

  • "I like the decor - it's like your Russian grandma's interior design went insane - and I think their food is great!"

  • "Being a Russian myself, I have experienced Russian food in many restaurants and have cooked much of it myself. What caught me by surprise is the authenticity of food, especially being that the restaurant is located in Manhattan and not in Brooklyn, where there are many Russian restaurants. It is important to note that this is a Russian restaurant and not Russian fusion. The food is traditional and the chefs are excellent. The in house infused vodkas are certainly worth ordering, especially the Garlic and Pickle vodka, or the Horseradish vodka. Definitely order the Khachipuri as an appetizer. It is made open faced rather than closed as often. They even add small egg yolks to the Khachipuri. Delicious!"

  • "I came to NYC to celebrate my birthday and my Russian friends recommended me to go there. It was awesome: great Russian food I used to in my native country, tasty cocktails, happy birtday song from my childhood! Highly recommend!"

  • "Fourth time here with Russian friends who enthuse that the food and the atmosphere are just like if you had the coolest people from hundreds of miles around crash your grandmothers dacha in Siberia."

  • "It was nice to discover cute old Russian style in the very heart of Manhattan. The food is genuinely Russian. The service is very friendly and the ambience is warm and comfortable. Thank you guys for your hospitality."

  • "I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! ONE OF THE BEST IN NYC TO ME. THE MUSIC REMINDS ME OF RUSSIAN CULTURE, THE FOOD I AMAZING, AND I ALSO LOVE THE PEOPLE, WHO WORK THERE! THEY ARE SO NICE AND FRIENDLY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!"

  • "Brunch at Mari Vanna is an experience. It's an all you can Russian buffet with bottomless mimosas for $35. You must go very hungry or you won't enjoy it. I have been there for brunch twice now and the food is fantastic. Don't miss the pierogi (both kinds, meat and potato), chicken stroganoff, blini, delicious bread, borscht. The only disappointment was that there were several items missing from the buffet that we were looking forward to (and had already told our friend we brought whose birthday it was how delicious these items were): the mini fried fish bites, the eggs and bacon. You can't run out of bacon and eggs at a brunch buffet!"

  • "Food very tasty. Had brunch on Sunday. A bit pricey @ $35.00 pp. My daughter and I probably didn't eat $35.00, worth of food between us. We would like to go again when it isn't brunch and try the regular menu. Small but very pretty restaurant."

  • "What a great find! Not your grandfather's boring brunch, mimosas included, for $35? Chicken stroganoff was fresh and delicious. Dumplings even better. Lots of fresh salads, and the meatballs in pink sauce were excellent. All overseen by a troop of young Russian guys and girls. it's authentic, it's comfortable, it's hip in a shabby chic kind of way and the food was really, really good. A nice change from scrambled eggs, bacon and muffins."

  • "We have been here before a few times, but this was our first time having brunch here and my boyfriend and I enjoyed it 100%. It's a buffet style with unlimited mimosas (so watch yourself). The selection for the food is amazing and even picky eaters can fin something they like. Service was excellent, and we could not have left happier. 5 starts!"

  • "Décor of this restaurant is nice; chandeliers & painted furniture. Definitely different than most restaurants in the city, but still chic. The food was good - we had the s2nd price level caviar, but instead of traditional bilinis they serve crepes. Would have been better w/ smaller bilinis or small potato pancakes, but still yummy. Also had the Olivier salad & Siberian dumplings. Both were tasty! The highlight tho is the extensive flavor-infused vodka list. We had cherry, cranberry, horseradish & honey. Cherry was by far our favorite. The honey cake dessert was also very good. We left full & tipsy after an afternoon at the ballet. Great date place and the service is wonderful. Nice place for a special night out & unique experience!"

  • "Each time! We had an excellent waiter who shared the story and his recommendations, great wine pairings - just a wonderful, hospitable place for lunch! Also a great sign when the large party next to us was Russian. We will return for visit 4!"

  • "loving the decor... this humble little place reminds me of Russia! oh wait...i've never been! when you walk into this place, you'd start to think that you're no longer in NYC. the rustic interior brings you back to seeing the decor, in those Moscow movies, very nostalgic. the food was quite interesting. we sat down for a Sunday brunch, little did we know, it was a buffet style. the food selection wasn't much to choose from, but taste worthy. for the good eats cooked by grandma Malvina, this is the place for you! little Nikolai or Babushka would highly appreciate the comfort food from Russia!"

  • "This restaurant was extremely disorganized - we had a reservation and had to wait a very long time to be served, and the whole restaurant was very hectic and noisy. The food was fine, but the service more than ruined the experience there."

  • "I love Mari Vanna. The restaurant is warm and inviting -- filled with chandeliers, lace curtains and fascinating memorabelia. Some might call it cluttered-- I find it warm and welcoming. The staff are super-friendly, and the food is excellent. I had the best borscht and chicken kiev that I have ever had anywhere. The cocktails are also wonderful. It is pricey, but worth it for a special occasion."

  • "The staff was unprofessional and mean. We were given a table that probably shouldn't even be allowed to seat customers; at the front door barricaded by a wall of seats against the bar. Our evening was torment with the cold wind whipping through and the stench of the chain smokers going in and out. We were served 3rd rate hors d'oeuvres that are on the regular menu but were passed for something special for the New Years occasion. Finally, the staff, including the manager, was completely indifferent and even confrontational to our complaints."

  • "We love Mari Vanna and particularly enjoy that it is bi-coastal! The food is authentic Russian cuisine meaning it is fresh, clean and honestly delicious. My wife and I have now dined at Mari Vanna in NYC and LA multiple times each and we have never been disappointed. Although the food is absolutely fantastic, the service is even better! We highly recommend Mari Vanna to anyone from Russia or anyone else in the world who appreciates an excellent dining experience."

  • "Just a great little restaurant, food is great, service is great, had a bit of a problem, but still great. Ordered four different bottles before they had the wine that we requested, didn't offer it at the lower price when found one that was in stock, (but I just don't think they know they are supposes to), cannot go wrong if you want a great "fun" dining experience and don't mind sitting with a bunch of Russians."

  • "My husband is from a Russian family and we would often go with them to the Russian nightclub restaurants in Brooklyn. Mari Vanna is a great option in Manhattan and the food was just as delicious, dare I say even better, than some of the places we've been to in Brighton Beach or Sheepshead bay. We'll be back soon!"
