A word from Mari Vanna
Once upon a time in Moscow & St. Petersburg, a mythical woman named Mari Vanna welcomed diners into her home with open arms, feeding them traditional Russian fare on her finest china and linens. All were welcome and those who frequent were graced with a key of their own to return whenever they wish to this cozy retreat. Now in present day New York City on a popular block between the Flatiron and Gramercy, Mari Vanna has taken up residency and awaits hungry New Yorkers, neighbors and tourists alike who are looking to eat, drink and be merry and finally understand what true Russian hospitality means.
The menu offers time honored Russian classics such as the flavorsome customary soup Borsch with Pampushka, Beets, Broth, Beef, Cabbage, Carrots and Potatoes served with Sour Cream in a beautiful tureen that holds enough for seconds or third. Mari Vanna is open for lunch, brunch and dinner 7 days a week.

Diner Reviews
  • "This was a great place! My Russian friend was excited to try it, and she really felt that the food was authentic to her homeland. I am looking forward to come back to this restaurant to try some other dishes. The Pre Fixe menu was very affordable. The waiters were very patient and my friend and I were not rushed through our meal at all. Anyone who wants to try Russian food should give Mari Vanna a shot. The restaurant design also makes the restaurant a fun place to be."

  • "The design of the place is good for those who still have USSR nostalgia, but the quality of food is below average and doesn't represent Russian cousine. Interesting experience, but not good value for money spent."

  • "this is the most magical place ever. i love it. plus, i am an official key holder which makes me feel pretty damn cool."

  • "The welcoming of the receptionist was quite cool but the food, ambience and the service made it more then good again. We will definately return. Great restaurant!!!!"

  • "Great Russian food: good choice and very nicely prepared. Nice ambience and decoration. Staff dresses, the tableware and decor - a bit exaggerated USSR style. The place is packed with Russians and ex-Russians;) and a few tourists. The prices are quite high, but the food quality is very good."

  • "Very friendly service, delicious food, house made vodka shots, pretty ambiance, music from the 60's-70's. What more could you want?"

  • "Great atmosphere. Authentic Russian cuisine very well prepared. A bit pricey, but worth it."

  • "Mari Vanna offers good if less-than-transforming traditional Russian cuisine, accompanied by an assortment of Russian beers, vodkas, and vodka cocktails. The decor is tea-room kitschy: crocheted doilies for place mats; bouquets of flowers in teapots; frilly curtains; cut glass chandeliers that look strangely cheap; bookshelves full of old dolls; lots of small framed pictures on the walls. And the service, while never rude, is oddly brusque and unpolished. A meal at Mari Vanna comes as close to dining in Moscow as at any other restaurant in the U.S."

  • "from ringing the doorbell at the beginning to the vodka shots at the end it was a wonderful experience!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • "A good place to have dinner with friends and colleagues. However, you have to "fight " to finish your dishes. It was very awkward to observe multiple repetitive attempts to take away the unfinished dishes after saying clearly that we are still working on it and, therefore NOT done. "

  • "Charming unique ambience, fine service, good food, great for a celebration or for leisurely lunch but noise & music in late evening much too loud. Wait staff feted one of us with tambourines and Russian song for his birthday! Borscht, herring, beet salad, meat pies all excellent. "

  • "If you are looking for modern Russian cuisine and a nice setting, you will like Mari Vanna. The restaurant is nicely decorated and has a broad selection of well prepared authentic dishes. Service is friendly and prompt. The atmosphere is more like a themed restaurant. For the authentic atmosphere, best flavored vodka shots, and value for the money - Russian Vodka Room is still our favorite."

  • "This beautifully decorated gem of a restaurant gives one the feeling of dining in a charming country inn outside of St. Petersburg or Moscow. What appears to be an enclosed garden seen through glass doors is actually the kitchen! Besides the excellent food, with many Russian specialties such as borsht, chicken kiev, blinis, and a cherry-infused glass of tea, there are some creative items such as the appetizer called "Herring under a Fur Coat"! The bar contains vats of vodka, each infused with a different batch of fruits. Everyone in my party of five was enchanted with Mari Vanna and we will all return for more."

  • "This is the perfect Sunday afternoon. The unlimited brunch is a great deal with fabulous food. All of the dishes (with exception of the eggs Benedict...) are authentic and as well prepared as you can expect from a self serve brunch buffet. The included mimosas are free flowing and if you supplement with vodka shots- (which I recommend) I highly recommend the honey/pepper combo- if that doesn't cure what ails you, you should probably seek medical attention!"

  • "My daughter and I enjoyed our experience here. The food was different and very good. The pear /vanilla infused vodka was outstanding. Also excellent service and very pretty decor. My criticism is regarding the price - I thought it was too expensive and overpriced for what it is"

  • "Жаль что поздно узнали что в Нью-Йорке есть такое заведение, а то все одни гамбургеры да кетчупы:) спасибо, вкусная кухня ! По-домашнему!)"

  • "Russian fare with a flare for fun. The flavored vodka shots are great and so it is the food! Great service, quaint but a LOT of energy. Don't miss Mari Vanna. A real gem. One of my favorite spots in the city...."

  • "If you are looking for a traditional Russian dining experience in NYC and not a "tourist trap"- look no further. Mari Vanna is your place. Super attentive and friendly service, the ambiance of a family celebration in a lovely Russian apartment, and outstanding food. Come here, you won't be disappointed. Don't miss trying the house infused vodkas and save room for dessert."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Manhattan. The food never disappoints. I just want to eat here every day. Felt like my mom was cooking for me again - the food is that authentic. There is nothing of mediocre taste on this menu. 5 stars…superb! And I must say that the dining room is beautiful! Also, I don't like vodka that much, but their vodka-infused shots are still pretty unique. Spasibo Mari Vanna!!! "

  • "Eating at Mari Vanna is an experience ... like a quick trip to St. Petersburg. I highly recommend it. I think the food is very good, but the reall attraction is the over-the-top decoration and the outstanding service."

  • "Great food (I am very much familiar with Russian food and Russian restaurants), good looking rooms, very capable waitresses, friendly surrounding and again.... great food"

  • "Mari Vanna was charming, pretty, comfortable, and delightfully quiet -- at lunch time. All good except the food. The herring appetizer was strange -- tasteless herring served in a glass jar, with boiled potatoes and thick black bread. Maybe good for a Russian winter, not ok for Manhattan. Chicken Stroganoff was peculiar, little strings of chicken mixed in with noodles and other items -- quite ordinary, very little flavor. This was my first visit; and honestly I'd expected more -- something like the delicious Russian Tea Room food I remember so well. Mari Vanna is just good for a quiet luncheon -- where conversation can be easily heard."

  • "I like the food at Mari Vanna. It's authentic Russian so it caters to those who like Russian food or those who like to try something new. But the real reason to go here is the amazing decoration/atmosphere (you'll forget you are in New York as soon as you step inside) and the even more amazingly friendly and professional staff."

  • "The food was great and I loved the decor. My only compliant would be that it took our waitress atleast 20 minutes to initially approach us. She was very apologetic but it was just a poor start to the night especially since it wasn't even that busy at that time."

  • "I was raised in a traditional Russian family and just recently moved out of my family home to Gramercy Park, just down the block. When I started to miss my mom's cooking, I decided to try out Mari Vanna and was very pleasantly surprised. Not only is the food reminiscent of my favorite childhood meals, but the cocktail list and service was on point as well. Have been back multiple times since and look forward to going back again soon!"

  • "My friend and I met for dinner after not seeing each other for a few years. Around 9:20 we were told that they need tour able for other people. We were moved to the bar. Also, the food did not taste good, it was way too plain."

  • "I've never gone to Moscow or St. Petersburg but I think in Mari Vanna we can feel as if we were in Russia. The waitresses, the food, the decoration... It worths! Just one complaint: the music is too loud."

  • "I am in love with this place! It feels like a russian grandmothers house, with gourmet russian cooking, made just the way a Russian family would!"
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "Enjoyed my lunch but the open dining room in the rear is not great for a business lunch if other tables are full. Food and service were fantastic!"
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "When you enter, you feel like you left NYC and traveled to Russa. The decoration is opulent, but it all fits. Even the waiters/waitresses are dressed in Russian clothes. The meal starts with a board of their home-made bread. The dishes are on the heavier side."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "Our second time there and even better this time. The food is outstanding, the portions generous but not too much, the presentations wonderful and the choice of Russian dishes extremely broad. Everything we've had there has been excellent. The dumplings are super, stuffed cabbage has great nuance and of course my wife adored the caviar. Service is attentive, friendly and helpful. The décor is very much fun. There is no chauvinistic patronizing, just a fun experience for Russian food. Definitely a gem, for no occasion or a special occasion."

  • "As Siberian I can say that their pelmeni were almost as good as Granny makes (prob. I should add that nothing will ever be). They have quite some vegetarian options, which is not so easy for Russian kitchen. I wish they had bortsch without meat too. The food tastes amazing. Atmosphere is very cute. They were playing American music from the 80s when we were there last time, but the time before that it was Soviet records, which was a bit random (great for people who know, but I was with some non-Russian friends). The staff is really friendly. We had a birthday brunch there for my friend and we did not even have to ask them to bring a cake and sing. They just heard us congratulate her and did it. Their HB song a la ruse is quite something."

  • "We went last International Women Day and they gave us a tulip. Unfortunately we would like to taste a typical russian food (khachapuri) and it wasn't possible because it was only for dinner menu..."

  • "This place is great, depending on what time of the day you go, each has its' privileges.. Lunch/brunch is absolutely amazing, everything tastes delicious. What I really loved at Mari Vanna is that they have not missed a detail for how food used to be served and in what dishes during the time that I was growing up in Russia. If you're not familiar with the country, this is a great place for an introduction as it is truly similar to the authentic experience. Definitely recommend for lunch, brunch, group gatherings or to just stop in on your own to try it out. It is also kid-friendly! In the evening, from what I hear, it turns into a great evening spot."
