Diner Reviews

  • "Superb ambiance. The decor and The menu captured Russian character. The occasional accordion interludes were fun although a bit disruptive. The quality of food gets a B, as Russian food can be so much tastier. The service is slow and disorganized. The wait was obnoxiously long. If u are with a group of friends, this should not be a problem, but the place is not good for a first date, unless you don't mind awkward silences while waiting for your meal to arrive."

  • "I went to Mari Vanna for a birthday lunch for a friend. The decor is unique and adorable. Our server was very helpful and attentive (he is from Moldavia, I believe). Such a fun menu of cocktails -- and the blinis as a shared appetizer were fabulous. The beet salad was the best I ever had and I loved my trout entree and the delicious Russian black bread. Six of us split a Napoleon for dessert -- even my one bite of dessert was heavenly with delicious strong Russian coffee. They did a nice job of celebrating the birthday with a special complimentary cocktail for the b-day girl, plus a candle in the dessert and a Russian birthday song with tamborines."

  • "We went to brunch again at Mari Vanna DC. The food was good, as usual. And this time, the service was better. Our server was very nice and attentive. We appreciated the smile on his face. A positive attitude is crucial to a positive experience overall. Let's hope we get good service again next time! P.S. This was my first Sunday brunch there - on Sundays, you don't have access to the regular menu - there's an open buffet."

  • "I was expecting it to be like couple other 'Russian' restaurants in the area but everything from the atmosphere to the vodka and dishes exceeded my expectations. I felt like I was back home in Russia. Great job! Already planning my return!"

  • "The restaurant looks like your grandma's living room, but the food is better than anything she would cook. Delicious entrees included the Cornish game hen (chicken tabaka) and entrecot (flattened filet mignon with mushrooms and cheese). Desserts: Onegin (chocolate), Bird's Milk (Chocolate napoleon), and Semalek (sp?, strawberries, sponge, and cream). Bar was loud and we were right on top of it. Free vodka shot was gross."

  • "Absolute F-minus on service. Twenty minutes before anyone showed up to take our order. Then they forgot our drinks (but did eventually bring them), then they forgot to bring my meal, which was odd since they did bring my friend's meal."

  • "Everything was strange. Entrecote was dreadful. Beef stroganoff was served not with noodles, but buckwheat.....not a good combination. Herring could have been sushi with no flavor. Noise level did not encourage conversation. I was underwhelmed and each member of our party was very disappointed. We will not return."

  • "This was our first time at a restaurant specializing in Russian food and drinks. The appetizer, a basket of pirozhok bread stuffed with various items (mushrooms, beef, etc.) was outstanding. The main course, I had seared and roasted entrecote (filet minion) and my companion had chcken kiev. The entrecote was very tasty and tender and the chicken was good but not quite as good as the entrecote. The strawberry infused vodka was very good and I will order it again. For dessert, we had onegin, which is a sponge cake with almonds and caremel and a couple of other things and it was delicious. The waitress and servers were polite and friendly and prompt throughout. We will definitely go back."

  • "Disappointed by the dinner menu. Lunch menu is much better. Get the strawberry vodka shot, don't get the pear"

  • "We arrived on time for the reservation, were seated upstairs in an area that is way too tight. It could use one less table. We were greeted almost immediately by our server. He took our order. It took 30 minutes for drinks to arrive. Salads arrived 20 minutes later, followed 30 SECONDS later by entrees. When we refused the entrees, it took another 30 minutes to return. We had ordered an appetizer for before the salads. It came right after the entree. When the food came, it was very good. I recommend the beet salad. But the lousy service and cramped quarters will make me think twice before returning. Prices are way too high to be treated like that."

  • "Friendly, attentive service. Traditional eastern European/Russian fare prepared authentically. My wife is of Czech origin and agreed that the food was prepared like her parents would have. Tasty Russian deserts. The signature infused vodkas are good, however, the Georgian red wines were underwhelming."

  • "Really enjoyed the restaurant - my only minor complaint is that the service, while very friendly, was not particularly attentive."

  • "Atmosphere was the only positive. The food was terrible and the service was even worse. Took 20 minutes for our appetizer to come (reasonable), but then another hour before our entrees arrived. Without an apology or acknowledgment. We had to ask twice for our water to be refilled and were never asked how the food was (once it finally arrived). The mushroom blinis were actually pretty good. But the entrecot was overcooked, dry, and flavorless - and SMALL! I never complain about portion size, but a thin piece of steak with three fingerling potatoes hardly qualifies as an entree. My husband got the siberian pelmeni dumplings, which were ok, but not flavorful. Salt and pepper - and quality service - would go a long way here."

  • "Went to Mari Vanna on a Monday night to celebrate a friend's birtdhay. Had an amazing time. Our server Alexi did a great job of describing the menu, he was very engaged the entire time. The food was awesome. The chicken keiv stole the show. We are all planning on going back. One of the best dining experiences ever. The decor was comfortable and homey. Lovely place."

  • "I liked it. Most of the traditional Russian dishes are on the menu, the ones I tried were well made, and were truly made the way someone would do them at home - i.e. you don't get a fancy Olivier salad you would get from a Moscow restaurant (beef, chopped parsley and dill, olive oil mayonnaise), you would get it as your Moscow aunt would have made it - bologna, sweet mayonnaise and carrots in a glass crystal bowl. Being from Siberia, I wasn't very impressed with Siberian dumplings, but that's understandable, what can you expect from people from Moscow ;))). The pickled tomatoes and sauerkraut with onions were top notch. All in all - a great place to have a few shots of vodka with traditional Russian zakuski (chasers)."

  • "We had been looking forward to our second trip to Mari Vanna. I ordered the potato entree again, but this time it was just soggy french fries with very greasy onions and mushrooms thrown on top. What happened to the tasty little fingerling potatoes we had just two weeks prior? The waiter was very nice, but definitely distracted and there were loooooooooong gaps in between sightings of him. He never brought the platter of black bread, radishes, scallions, and salt. We did appreciate the rose and the glass of champagne for International Women's Day. Nice touch."

  • "I've been wanting to try Mari Vanna since I first heard of it. I was NOT disappointed! This neighborhood gem is tucked away between office buildings in the heart of downtown Washington, but once you arrive, you step into another place altogether. The décor is fun, the atmosphere is vibrant, and it's different than any other restaurant I've been in lately. There is an extensive and creative vodka menu. We tried all sorts of food and it was all great. The service was fantastic and we had so much fun. I will definitely go back!"

  • "The reason I am giving this place a "Good" rate is that I felt the food was tasty but over priced. Cozy place. If you want to try traditional Russian food this is the place to go to."

  • "I love Mari Vanna in general. However, Mari Vanna in Washington DC is a different story due to the rude attitude of some of its staff. The food is great, as are the freshly squeezed juices. However, the general manager is very rude. I am used to the typical Russian attitude, and don't expect much courtesy when dealing with Russians. However, the manager was unacceptably rude, even for my lowered standards. I asked him a question, and he was very rude, dismissive and demeaning. His attitude towards me was simply unacceptable. The bartender was also very rude when I asked him about a marker for the wall writings. The nice maitre d' eventually came to our rescue. My guest was utterly shocked by the lack of hospitality at Mari Vanna."

  • "Food was fairly decent, vodka sampler great, the horseradish vodka was surprisingly smooth. I would give the entire experience 3 out of 5 stars as although the food was good, it was not the best I have experienced before."

  • "It's one of my favorite restaurants. Great food, delicious cocktails and a large selection of home made flavored vodkas."

  • "I invited 8 family members to Mari Vanna. In the past we have all generally had a good experience there. This time we ordered a lot of different dishes. Not all of those were delivered to our table, but were on the bill at the end of the evening. Eight desserts arrived together and the ninth arrived 45 minutes later. I ordered a drink to go with the meal but it arrived at the end of the meal. While I was trying to make sure that all of the guests were alright, 2 of the help started pouring bottled water without asking me if we wanted the tap water being served at every other table. The water bill at the end was $40. We have visited Mari Vanna often, but none of us will be going back again. Outrageous."

  • "The food really reminded me of my Russian home, it was so Russian :) Everything we ordered was to die for. There were old Soviet cartoons on TVs and an accordionist played for my birthday! It is truly an amazing place! highly recommend it."

  • "We enjoyed the traditional Russian dishes at brunch, the vodka, and the ambiance that reminded us of Russian tea houses we've visited in Russia and Harbin, China. The young waitstaff was friendly and helpful; for example, they brought us our soup from the buffet table so we didn't have to carry the bowls upstairs. The accordion player got the crowd clapping, and didn't overwhelm our ears by playing too long in the already noisy space. If you have accessibility issues, ask for the first floor. Be aware that the restroom was on the 2nd floor; we don't know if that's the only one."

  • "Excellent Russian and Georgian food! The best I've found outside each respective country. And they carry Georgian wine--score!"
    Dined on 2/23/2014
  • "If you have ever been to Russia or had traditional Russian food, Mari Vanna will not disappoint. The food was excellent, they have a mix of Russian and Georgian (the cheese bread is reason enough to go). The cocktails are original and delicious, made with fresh ingredients that haven't been sitting out all day. The reason I downgraded this experience was the service. Once taking our order service moved at a glacial pace, our waiter completely ignored us. I made these reservations 3 weeks ago and halfway through our meal the hostess came over and told us she was putting a couple at our table because it was a "shared dining" table. Nowhere on the website or menu does it say this, and it made for an awkward meal. We were then ignored."

  • "Great food, slow service. Really slow service. So slow that the waitress gave us complimentary shots of vodka as an apology. This wasn't necessary, but it was appreciated. Dance music (in Russian) was too loud. Pumpkin soup was delicious, potatoes and mushrooms were terrific, sour cherry vareniki were tasty. Honey pepper vodka was awesome!"

  • "Lunch started out well with attentive service as we settled into the hominess that is Mari Vanna. It is charming to look at but unfortunately falls down after that. Our entrees were lukewarm or cold (blini), and the beef stew with prunes was nicely flavored but the only evidence of a prune was a pit. After the entrees were served we were abandoned. We had to flag down a waiter to order tea, and then the water was tepid. We were never even asked if we were interested in dessert which we would have been. It is too bad because it really is a charming place but we won't go back."

  • "LOVE this restaurant. you can wear jeans, or a tux, and fit right in. It's so eclectic... mismatched, gold-trimmed china tea sets... charming servers, romantic lighting. the food is DELICIOUS, and accommodates vegans as well. the pumpkin soup, mushroom crepes, and beet salad were all to die for. Will be back form some of that traditional Russian Dessert! The wait staff is a little slow, so go when you can relax and enjoy the pace. Don't try to be in and out quickly."

  • "We went on Valentine's Day -- special for us. Mari Vanna lived up to all of our hopes and dreams for great Russian food. Delicious. Many great menu choices, as well as two fixed price menus. Service was great. The infused vodka was great. Unfortunately, the dining room has TV turned to college (yes, college, not the Olympics) hockey games, along with music that was too loud. What are they thinking? Otherwise, a restaurant that we recommend and plan to visit again (but on the messanine)."

  • "We were excited about a new experience and it lived up to it. We really enjoyed the place and the food. The service was very good. We plan to go back and try other things on the menu we didn't get to this time. FUN!!!"

  • "The service was just awful! The waiter disappeared for over an hour. Food took forever and was mediocre. Music was way too loud (American dance music during an expensive Russian dinner?). We were seated on the third floor - not where you want to sit for dinner -- it is a disco and not pretty at all (unlike the other two floors). Complete waste of $300. Won't be back and suggest others go elsewhere if you want a good meal with a real waiter..."
