Diner Reviews
  • "Marea is a great restaurant. We had an inattentive waiter and very slow service that resulted in a challenging evening"

  • "Excellent cuisine, especially loved lobster-burrata starter. Slightly stuffy for my taste but very professional staff. The food is certainly worth a visit. Ambiance appealing but nothing special."

  • "I was looking for the best italian restaurant in NY and took Marea out of some of the lists that are on internet. No doubt that the restaurant is good, but I was really expecting something more special or even outstanding. The sommelier was so helpful and the service was ok. We would like to know more about the menu, since we only tried a few things."

  • "Perfect italian style New York restaurant, located central park South. Wonderful ambiance, very pleasant lightning - yes it matters - and above all delicious food. We even had a Gevrey Chambertin, which, as everyone knows, was Napoléon's wine (he used to drink one single glass at...11 am every morning)."

  • "Second time here. Food still fantastic. Service still needs work. 45 mins. after having been seated and no one asked if we wanted a drink, offered an amuse bouche or bread."

  • "I had originally visited Marea when many years ago. I was not impressed, could not have been a better experience this time. We ordered the 4 course prix fixe, we were already full after course 2. Every problem we had was fixed beyond our expectations."

  • "Marea is a good place to dine before going to the theatre. It was hard to find the restaurant as it's at Columbus Circle and it appears to be in an office building. They have a great wine list, our meals were very good and the service was excellent. They feature a 4 or 5 course price fixe option but I'm not a big fan of those. Pastas are all home made, and our entrees were well portioned. They called in the morning to confirm our reservation, and asked if we needed transportation to the theatre. That was a nice touch. The prices are reasonable. I recommend Marea for a fine dining experience."

  • "This is a restaurant of Notability. Service and seating are fantastic. Great noise level. The best service you could ever ask for. The wine list and Sommelier are extraordinary. The menu is creative and mostly inspired. The preparation of the food was good and presentation excellent. The food was definitively over salted showing a lack of attention to execution. All of the ingredients were fresh and of the highest quality. Some other examples of the execution besides over salting were the lack of crispy skin on the sea bass and the uninspired presentation of a melting three scoops of ice cream. Like I said, we had a spectacular time and have no regrets, however with service and ambience so extraordinary plz Execute better"

  • "We have eaten at Marea twice, and both times the entire experience was a delight. The dishes are interesting and beautifully prepared. The spices are subtle and bring out the natural flavors. Portions are perfect: not too large, but more than enough. The wine list is huge and spans the spectrum of varieties and prices, but they never tried to push a more expensive wine. They also poured carefully, not trying to finish the bottle quickly and make you order another. Our waiter was very helpful, but neither condescending nor overly solicitous. Service was prompt, but we never felt rushed. The prix fixe dinner is a real bargain for this quality of dining."

  • "I have followed this chef for many years at his winning restaurants - oh, how I miss Convivio - but this was my first trip to Marea. And his take on seafood is second to none now in NYC. Wow. It lives up to the impeccable standards he has set through the years, and has built on the food and service and attention. Thank you for a wonderful lunch."

  • "Had a lovely lunch here…well appointed dining room, excellent service and a nice wine list by the glass that allows for two people to properly pair wines with their first and second courses. The Astice (beautiful lobster and creamy burrata to die for) and Tartare (bigeye tuna), were as good as could be. Our Secondo, Strozzapreti & one with Polipo, (the pasta course) was off the mark, which is surprising, since Michael White was in the kitchen and "known" for his pasta. I saw him leave the restaurant at about 2:15pm. The Strozzapreti (crab &sea urchin) was flavorful, but both pasta dishes were a bit overcooked and over-sauced. Additionally, the octopus was tough. Pity."

  • "Had a wonderful dinner at Marea two days ago. My wife and I both ordered the tasting menu; everything on it was delicious. The house octopus specialty was particularly worth ordering, as was the sea bass and the seafood stew. While I usually have chocolate dessert, I chose the fruit sorbets, which were outstanding. My only slight complaint was that the music was a bit too loud (not like some restaurants, but loud enough to be too noticeable)."

  • "As a restaurant that has been awarded two Michelin stars I expected a lot from our visit to Marea for dinner. I chose to sample the Tasting menu, believing that the five dishes on that menu would represent the best that Marea had to offer. Of these two were outstanding and genuinely memorable, one was good and two were distinctly average. Overall I was left feeling underwhelmed by the dining experience. This feeling wasn't helped by being assigned the worst table in the restaurant which was at the focal point of waiter activity, including chairs being lifted over our table during the meal. I'm surprised that Marea has two Michelin stars. We've had better dining experiences at much better value for money in the last few weeks."

  • "I always look forward to the pasta at Marea- homemade, cooked al dente, enveloped in velvety, seafood saucy goodness. It's consistently the highlight of the meal. This visit, I had the pasta with crab and uni, and it lived up to expectations. Then, I had the steak, and it was a revelation. Seasoned and cooked to perfection, it was one of the best cuts of meat I've had in a long time. Even though Marea is known for its seafood, I don't remember any of the fish main courses I've had there, but I don't think I'll forget this steak anytime soon. Service was fine, nothing remarkable. And the dining room, while sleek and modern, feels a bit cramped and lacks the elegance of other restaurants at this price point."

  • "We had an amazing experience. Food and service were beyond great."

  • "Having been to many Michelin starred establishments I had great expectations about Marea only to be sorely disappointed soon after arrival. The layout was cramped - a waitress bumped into the back of my chair twice while walking to another table (without apologising). The noise level was like a zoo. There were crumbs all over my chair which wasn't very pleasant for someone wearing a skirt. There clearly wasnt enough waiters and we had to wait for over 5 minutes before we were even given a menu. Food wise the dishes ranged from fair to good, but the presentation was crude. Price was ok for the amount of food but overall I'm not impressed."

  • "The restaurant is modern and airy with a lovely atmosphere. Service was professional though I wished that the servers could have some intuition of the diners' needs, such as replenishing bread when needed. We couldn't have the tasting menu due to shellfish allergies but our server suggested a pasta to share alongside the two course menu. Apertifs were well made. Food was outstanding! The signature dish (fusilli with octopus in red wine sauce) was perfect in every way. Fish was very fresh and excellently prepared. Very high standard. Desserts were just as good and the wine choices and suggestions were excellent. My only caveat: at this level, one would expect an amuse bouche to be served. I will most certainly be returning to Marea."

  • "We're foodies who are trying all the best restaurants in NY and we conclude that Marea is one of the best. We usually order tasting menu and this lunch, we ordered something different. Our fish appetizers are excellent as always, two pasta dishes are fantastic. however, we both ordered frittata with seppie, squid and octopus, which became our first disappointment in Marea. too much eggs, no seafood taste, and no flavor whatsoever. since it's our last dishes, we ended up with this terrible taste leaving the restaurants and couldn't possible to have any eggs for a while. I have been to France many times, and our friends often cooked frittata for us. they are my favorite dishes, but somehow the chef didn't cook a good one."

  • "I have to say I love cooking and have been around quite a bit, living in Europe for many years and had my fair share of amazing food. It was my first time at Marea and I was quite informed about prices and portions (the usual in this kind of restaurant), but can't stop feeling that even little me could have done something better with the noble and fresh ingredients of the entree I ordered...not amazing! The food was only reasonable, tasteless, the almonds in the dish too hard and lost in the broth (when it came, the waiter forgot about it when the dish first arrived). I've never been to a 2 star Michellin restaurant before (I didn't know they were rated when I booked) and, for one thing, completely lost my trust in the Michellin rating..."

  • "One of the best meals ever in NYC. All aspects of the food were impeccable. The wine list is superlative, if typically overpriced. One small detractor is that sommelier tended to steer us toward the bottles he wanted to sell--all above 300$--and away from often equally good bottles in the 150-300 range. He is young and has a lot learn and hopefully will. But the list is excellent and the wines beautifully maintained and presented."

  • "My husband and I had our anniversary dinner here. It was just the two of us. Our table was ready early and the staff was extra nice when i told them it was out anniversary. The service was great and the food was good. Small portions, but very upscale atmosphere without being too "stuffy". I will definitely go back again."

  • "My wife and I visit NYC many times each year and always seem to walk by the window of Marea, look in, and never eat there. This time we decided to make a reservation and give it a try. Wow!! Great service, excellent service, and a restaurant that your can actually have dinner and are able to speak to each other without shouting. Everything was great. We will come back again."

  • "My husband and I arrived around 5:30 for an early anniversary dinner. There were very few diners in the restaurant at that time and the music was a bit loud and honestly quite distracting. Luckily, a fuller dining room gradually drowned out the terrible music. The ambiance was sleek and modern just not my style. Also, like most restaurants in ny, the AC was uncomfortably cold. In terms of food, we shared a lobster appetizer which was very good. For our entrees we both ordered the halibut. At $41, even for a fine dining establishment, the portion was quite small, though overall pretty good. My husband had more bread than I so he felt satisfied but I left hungry upon leaving. I'd recommend getting your own app and/or pasta dish with entree."

  • "Food was good but not impressive, nothing you would not find in an average seafood restaurant in Italy. The service was definitely not up to the standards of a 2-Michelin star restaurant. Finally, the ambience was that of a lounge bar rather than a restaurant and very noisy. There are by far better restaurants in NY for the price. We do not know what kinds of inspectors Michelin sends to NYC to rate restaurants, but this is definitely not one of their best findings and ratings."

  • "We had dinner fir two and ordered the prix fix menu. We felt like top chef judges, as all the food is well plated and there is always something soecial about each dish. We highly recommend the fussili and the halibut. Overall great dinner exoerience, great food and service."

  • "We celebrated our 21st anniversary here, in the same spot the old Delmonico used to reside. This place is more modern, upbeat and has fantastic food. Our waiter didn't pay enough attention to us, but fortunately for the restaurant, the 'pit boss' and sommelier picked up the slack. We had an awesome meal and a great time. Highly recommend Marea."
