Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed a very nice dinner. Everything that we ordered came perfectly prepared. Our wait staff were very attentive and were able to accommodate my food sensitivities very well (gluten, dairy). The ambiance is very nice but the tables can be close together so I would not call it intimate. A great foodie place, especially if you are looking for fish."

  • "We did the four courses for $99 and everything was delicious. Must have the fusilli with octopus and bone marrow! By far the best dish on the menu, and I don't even like octopus. Marea is a wonderful fine dining experience."

  • "Exceptional food - service which is both deft and friendly - advice on wine which is approachable yet highly informed. Four courses delivered without flaw even when sitting down at 10.30pm. Don't miss the risotto with lobster, turbot & sea urchin - exceptional duck - simple but flawlessly executed sautéed dover sole - and treat yourself to Bomboloni - doughnuts, rosemary, chocolate sauce & spiced honey. No ordinary doughnuts!"

  • "Our unfinished appetizer was taken away without asking while they brought the entree. It was close to closing time but several tables were still active. We felt rushed and found it a bit rude."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed an "after theater" dinner at Marea several nights ago. From the time we entered the door until we left, we were treated like royalty. The food was outstanding with special mention of the oysters which were some of the best I have ever had. The wine list is impressive with a heavy emphasis on Italian wines, but excellent options for other country's wines. Will readily go back next time I am in NY."

  • "Have eaten here before. Thought there was a decline in food prep. Ordered asparagus with crab to start. Three overcooked, pencil thin asparagus appeared--was this a tasting menu? And then branzino which was overcooked as well. My dining companion had an enormous salad and huge portion of risotto, unappealingly plated. Overpriced business lunch. Dining experience left me underwhelmed and disappointed."

  • "This was a fantastic restaurant. The service was great, and the food was delicious. They have a fixed priced dining menu, which most people seem to be doing and which gives you four courses. For your first time there it's probably the best way to experience what Marea has to offer. The seafood and pasta were excellent, and the desserts were phenomenal!"

  • "After seeing the matinee of a wonderful performance of Raisin in the Sun, we hurry uptown to what we thought would be equally as wonderful- dinner at Marea- a restaurant so highly ranked. What a disappointment- and an expensive one no less. From the supercilious staff members to the very boring, flavorless pasta and let us not forget the arugula salad that was literally a plate of arugula with two slices of onion in it and nothing out of the ordinary swordfish- we could hardly wait to leave. A message to the organization- hire more culinary people for your kitchen and less front of the house who consider themselves the dinner guests!!"

  • "We booked the Marea for a stop-over dinner on our way to the caribean. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice, the staff friendly, the wine list extensive, the food was good and the prices were a bit high, but not overpriced. However, we expected by far more from a two Michelin star restaurant as the place is rather big and nothing was really spectacular. In summary no disappointment, but nothing to write home about ."

  • "A 60s clean cut feel and efficient staff. To die for Long Island ice tea! Signature grilled octopus dish good but not wow. Extremely fresh pasta!"

  • "I would say that I have had better individual dishes than I had at Marea, but overall from beginning to end, it was the best meal I've ever had by a long ways. The smoked pork jowl appetizer was great. The Orecchiette with shrimp and sepia ragu was packed with flavor without being heavy or overly filling, which can often happen with pasta dishes. The roast duck was perfectly cooked and was served with a ravioli that was so good I wish I could have had a whole order of them for my pasta course. The pana cotta and apple granita dessert wasn't the best of the bunch at my table on its own, but after the parade of rich, heavy flavored dishes, it was the perfect end. Light, refreshing, and not too sweet. It was a great end to an epic meal."

  • "Very disappointed for a 2 stars michelin. Absolutely not at the level, and very far away, from a 2 * in Europe. In Europe, Marea would probably have 3 forks but no stars."

  • "We've now eaten at 4 or 5 of the Michael White restaurants in the NY area and we've never been disappointed. The food is creative and so tasty. The menu contained signature homemade pastas and and some incredible meat and seafood dishes..all of which surpassed our high expectations."

  • "A must go restaurant in town Great food and service. Although it is not a cheap restaurant, the price was not bad for the food and service quality you are geting. The wine list is very big and full of renowned wines, but if you want to spend less then a USD 100.00 a bottle you will have a little trouble finding the right choise. I got the recomendation from a friend and checked it up at another website, and then decided to go. I only discoverd that this is a 2 star michelin restaurant when I was leaving the place."

  • "But, delicious! I had the Agnolotti with wild mushrooms and sweetbreads for lunch about ten days earlier. The pasta was freshly made and the mushrooms/sauce were delicate. (No sweetbreads). On sun., March 30th, I ordered the same dish for my entree. Bits of sweetbread were sited as well as bits of chopped mushrooms. The pasta had been made earlier as the edges were a bit stiff/tough. Rather disappointing. However, the stuffed calamari were freshly made and quite excellent! -[ the bread was first quality! ...I do appreciate good bread]"

  • "This was my second visit to Marea. I thought the food was very good (not outstanding) and the portions were too small. My lunch left me wanting more. While Marea is an excellent restaurant, I would choose Le Bernadin for a splurge for fish."

  • "Superb late dinner after an evening at the Lincoln Center! Great seafood with a very sofisticated presentation. Very crowded and therefore rather loud and noisy. But still a wonderfull place maybe a little bit to "rizzy" and too "shiny"!"

  • "The food here is excellent but I wouldn't call it amazing. Also, very expensive with smaller portions. While the food didn't amaze me, I thought the staff was exceptional! We had our 3y/o along and the staff treated very well. Even when she was a little cranky. I was super impressed by all of the staff we interacted with."

  • "In my recent trip to NY, I dined at several Michelin starred restaurants such as Le Bernardin, Daniel, Eleven Madison Park, JungSik, Jean Georges, etc. At Marea, we had a 5 course lunch tasting menu and it was a disappointing experience. Compare to my experience at JungSik which also has 2 Michelin stars, Marea didn't quiet deliver my expectations. Food was okay to good, and service was lacking. Food runner was putting down plates as he was explaining the dishes and the service was just not what I would expect from two stars restaurant. For $80 5 course lunch tasting menu with medicore food and service, there are many better options."

  • "First time here. Excellent food & service. Without a doubt this is a top notch Italian in NYC. Expensive, but well worth it. With my wife, we had shrimp stuffed squid and smoked pork jowl to start with and had Crab & sea urchin pasta and braised octopus pasta for main. Excellent!!! Must Try."

  • "Unless you are a celebrity. We asked for a change of table and they moved us to another hidden corner. This was a reservation from weeks ago too. So that's just something they do. Everything else is so good that we keep going back and offended by this every time."

  • "A very noteworthy meal accompanied by excellent service and a nice atmosphere. All the courses were characterized adept and creative touches. The fusili was a particularly outstanding dish. There duck, which I had as the meat course, was very skillfully prepared, esthetically presented on the plate and tasted wonderful. Overall, an outstanding dining experience."

  • "Had the lunch. Great selections. Very well prepared dishes. Especially enjoyed the appetizer called Astice. The focaccia was excellent. The service was very helpful, friendly, and attentive. Desserts were excellent. All in all a very good experience."

  • "This restaurant is well located on Central Park South. The dining room tables are reasonably spaced given the dining room itself is not excessively large. For a 2 star Michelin restaurant more space between tables is required. The menu provided much to consider and all read well. The food itself was superbly presented, inventive and of the highest order. Service was efficient, courteous and very professional. The wine list was in keeping with a 2 star Michelin restaurant. All in all a very good restaurant offering good food and value at the top end of town."

  • "Not my first visit to this Gem! Service, Food and Atmosphere are second to non. No surprise it is one of Manhattan's top restaurants. I brought some newcomers not familiar with Crudo which made for an excellent experience. In this case unique as well. Your Maitre d', George is the absolute proffessional! As well the service staff and the bussers. They all were on the top of their game. The wine service was equally exceptional. This particular evening was more of a casual business outing for us, however, every time my wife and I visit NY, Marea is on the top our list."

  • "I took my husband for dinner for his birthday, and although the food was outstanding, the restaurant is beautiful, seating very comfortable, there were no warm Fuzzies from the moment we arrived to the hostess stand to sitting and waiting at the bar for attention from either of the 2 bartenders to the server. Marea is definitely stuffy and there is no warmth at all."

  • "the food combinations and the execution is just amazing. We tried the seurchin, lardo and sea salt appetizer and it was amazing. It is also an incredible setting - but the main dining room only."

  • "Prix-fix menus are the best way to enjoy a variety of interesting flavor combinations in Italian / seefood context. In some dishes the supporting flavor components e.g., from cooking liquids / sauces (using smoked bacon, sea urchin) are quite powerful whereas in others the combinations are more subtle. Something to consider when choosing wine(s). The hand made pastas are a very high quality component in the pasta dishes. Dolci are heavy in flavors and in composition, and sorbets are a safe choice for smaller stomachs. Location and ambient are very trendy, buzzing. Background music somewhat cheesy."

  • "We went there for our wedding anniversary. The service was excellent. We were expecting more for the food. The octopus and the doghnuts (dessert) were very good! We also had the Mare and the Nero risotto, but we didn't love it. They were over salted and under cooked. For secondi we had the monk fish and the scallops. They were okey. In general, we had a nice time and the staff was great. We would go again, but maybe just for drinks and appetizers."

  • "Best STEAK I've ever had! And, I LOVE seafood. Since having the steak in the past, I always get it now. It is simply superb. Yummy globs of bone marrow! My favorite 'fancy' restaurant in the city."

  • "The music! Marea is a beautiful, elegant yet comfortable restaurant with an attentive and helpful wait staff, a varied and interesting menu, a terrific wine list, and a gracious, knowledgeable, personable sommelier. Outstanding seafood selection, but several fine non-seafood choices too. It's a casually upscale place -- nothing pretentious or off-putting about it. But the music that's piped in seems out of step with the ambience...it's sort of disco! It's not loud enough to be distracting, but it just seemed sort of...well, odd. Still, that's no reason NOT to go to this great NYC restaurant."

  • "I ate at Marea when it first opened and it was excellent and special in every way. On my last visit the noise and music level was too high. The seafood was tough and overlooked in two dishes. The pasta course was much too salty. The obvious surveying of tables by management to see who was ready to leave was done with the grace of a factory efficiency manager. The timing was off. We asked for a brief pause between courses and we waited more than an hour. I am sorry to have returned to a restaurant, which I had remembered being superlative only to be disappointed."

  • "We had a terrific meal at Marea. As compared to some of the other very high-end Italian restaurants in town, we found it a bit less pretentious, both in terms of service and atmosphere. All of our dishes were wonderful, especially the Brodetto di Pesce. Next special occasion, we'll return."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "This is a top of the line Italian restaurant which specializes in fish dishes hence an extensive white wine menu of interesting selections. The staff is welcoming and knowledgable about the creative dishes which cannot be found elsewhere."

  • "When we last dined at Marea, I opined that Marea has the "well deserved spot at the summit of the dining out food chain." I am happy to report that nothing has changed. If anything, we have found more to admire and enjoy. Rather than ordering a la carte, we sprung for the $99 prix fixe, as it was our 13th anniversary. And a lucky 13 it was. My wife is gluten intolerant (doctor's orders), so she sampled Marea's gluten-free pasta, made on site. I had a taste, and we agree it is the best gluten-free pasta we have ever encountered. As always, the appetizers were superb (pork cheeks and polipo) and the seafood was fresh and fabulous. Next time, we'll stop in after LIncoln Center for a glass of wine and a plate of that fantastic pasta!"
