A word from Mare
Mare, Italian for ‘sea’ , opened in the summer of 2005 in Boston’s historic North End - only 100 steps away from Paul Revere’s house. Mare has quickly become this city’s most acclaimed seafood restaurant with accolades such as “One of the Top 80 Tables in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler and “Go to List” Food & Wine.

Mare is not your typical North End restaurant, the menu is light and healthy it treats all the ingredients with respect in order to highlight their natural flavors and not cover them up. Further, Mare’s modern interior, unbeatable city views and solicitous service draw crowds of all ages for the grilled Octopus, homemade pastas, whole roasted sea bass, stuffed lobster and more. Beer, 33% organic wine list and cordials served.

Diner Reviews
  • "The cocktails use diluted spirits. I am not kidding; ask them. The food is ...meh. The setting is very nice. The noise level is very bad."

  • "Although the food is good most of the appetizers don't warrant prices over 15 dollars. I had the scallops with angel hair and it could have used a bit of imagination for the ingredients. My daughter's tuna was nicely cooked but rather boring. And what can I say about fried clams except they are. All in all we felt the bill was too high for this type of food. This is the 3rd time dining here and don't think we'll return."

  • "my boy friend and I went to Mare for our 3 yr anniversary. dinner and the app was delicious! we got a bottle of wine which was great. we didnt get dessert b/c we had our hearts set on vittoria's but the table next to us got some and they looked spectacular. if we werent meeting up w friends i would have stayed and had dessert! its a small place so a large group might be a but awkward but its a great place for a romantic dinner"

  • "The Mare Oyster Bar offered a wide selection of foods that were prepared with a distinct and delicious flavor. We enjoyed steamed clams in a garlic, olive oil, tomato base that were fantastic. We then had a lobster casserole that was out if this world. They had a great raw bar which did not interest my husband or myself but we loved our meal. We highly recommend."

  • "The food here has always been spectacular. It was a letdown tonight, however, good but lacking in preparation in some areas. There was absolutely no seasoning in the polenta side dish we ordered, a huge mistake. Also, the halibut, a signature dish, was overcooked and a bit dry (though still delicious). Mashed potatoes accompanying the 7 spice chicken arrived cold. This has recently been one of my favorite restaurants in the North End. I will think twice about returning--for the prices, flawless preparation should be the standard."

  • "Very good food. Great oyster selection if you're into that. I had the tuna, perfectly cooked and seasoned. A little cramped, the tables could use a bit more room. 5 stars for the food!"

  • "Our actual waiter was fine but nothing is more insulting when busboys are rushing to take away the plates from some diners who are finished while others are still eating. Clearly it is more important to management that they turn over as many tables as possible instead of their patrons having a decent time. It is rude, it makes us feel rushed and does not make the dining experience a pleasant one. It's too bad - the food was quite good."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at Mare. We had a wonderful night. The food was terrific (oysters galore and wonderful scallops on pasta). And the service was great--our waitress could not have been more welcoming and attentive. It's a beautiful, small restaurant off the beaten path in the North End."

  • "Need to work on Oyster Bar service. Food presentation was nice. Rather expensive for halibut. Wine list is a little over the top."

  • "My husband and I went to Mare for dinner on our anniversary and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Our waiter, Pepe, was very attentive and made us feel welcomed from the moment we sat down. We had the jumbo shrimp cocktail and a couple varieties of oysters from the raw bar to start. Then the potato gnocchi and seafood cannelloni as our entrees. All if the food was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Overall this is a great place for a special occasion."

  • "From the bartender Ben to our awesome server David Wood, we had a great dinner experience at Mare! The food was excellent and the atmosphere is living and fun. The staff was very attentive and sensitive to our needs re: getting to a concert soon after our dining experience."

  • "Very small place with tables close but expected in a big city. Beautiful neighborhood with windows that open for summer breeze on 2 sides of the restaurant made the ambiance nice. Food excellent and I would definitely recommend."

  • "Our group of four thoroughly enjoyed an early dinner at Mare prior to catching a concert at Blue Hills Pavilion. Pepe was our very attentive waiter, who made great recommendations when we asked. We enjoyed great oysters and several appetizers before dinner. Everyone was pleased with their dinner selections (tuna, salmon, pasta with scallops and pasta with rock crab). This is our second time eating at Mare and we look forward to eating there again when in Boston."

  • "Is the sentence we repeated over and over. We started with oysters, of course, and had a wonderful sampling of Damarscotta, Casco Bay and PEI. Then we had the "meat"ball! It was incredible- a combination of seafood with "sponge bread" which made the texture luxurious. But what did it was the sauce; a cherry tomato-crushed red pepper magnificence! I had the Lemon Angel Hair with 3 large seared scallops. The garlic cream sauce was plate-licking good. My dinner partner had the Wild Boar Pappardelle which was also scrumptious. There was no room for dessert! Highly recommend this for a special night out."

  • "Besides the food being absolutely amazing, the window seats are great places to take a friend or two to dinner while people watching in one of the hottest districts in Boston. A true gem of the North End."

  • "I have dined all over the world and never have I had a waiter stick his fingers in my plate to taste my food to verify a query I had about my dish."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "From the minute the waiter insisted they didn't offer a certain wine by the glass (which they did), to the wrong appetizers being delivered to our table and then the salad being overly salty, the dinner went even further downhill. The food was sub par and bland (although the lobster roll was seasoned, but overseasoned with lemon). Too loud, too crowded, wait staff was very rude and pretentious. Would never return again. Way over priced for the value. A big let down."

  • "Well prepared seafood and a very nice selection of oysters. Service attentive and helpful, not overbearing."

  • "On a sunny Saturday afternoon, we had a leisurely lunch here. The grilled seafood plate was quite nice, with good sized pieces of fish, shrimp, and lobster. We also ordered separately a whole lobster. Be sure to ask ahead of time what the market price is - we were astonished when the bill came (even without the "stuffing" of calamari, shrimp, and other items it was way more expensive than we'd thought - shame on us for not asking up front). The desserts were the star of the show. The tiramisu and the chocolate cake were outstanding; the fig bread pudding was good but not nearly as flavorful as the other two. The server recommended a wine and allowed us to try it first, which we appreciated."

  • "The seafood and live fresh oyster are amazing. They are not pricey and you can pair with Dom P bubbles at a very reasonable cost. We had total two dozen oysters, a bottle of Dom P., big crab and grill seafood platter. They are so delicious. The bar tender girl is very friendly and helpful. *They also have stone crab* We will return again definitely."

  • "Just a short walk from the Haymarket T station Mare was a great referral from a former Bostonian who new my love of seafood. The noise level could be problematic for some (my wife) but the food and presentation more than compensated to make for a truly enjoyable evening. The raw bar featured over fifteen flavors of oysters and included clams, lobster, shrimp, and crab. Other appetizers were noteworthy especially the fresh sardines prepared in the true Sicilian manner with pine nuts and raisins. Wonderful selection of wine and New England brewed beers made this a featured stop on our next visit to Boston."

  • "Very overpriced ..Had Zuppa de Mare-touted as a huge plate/bowl of variety of shellfish & lobster $36----not many mussels, clams oysters & small amount of lobster….Wild salmon Ok but small portion ..Fresh clams were not fresh---from the day before---NOT acceptable in a seafood restaurant on the North End a step away from the water---Service was atrocious…waiter didn't know anything & continued to come back & say they were out of things when we were the first people there on a Sunday at 6PM…save your money"

  • "Mare offers great seafood paired with a contemporary ambiance in the heart of the traditional North End. With 6+ types of oysters always on hand and wonderful specials to be had, this is the place to come for seafood anywhere near the waterfront."

  • "The food and choices at Mare are still very good. The only problem is that so many of the menu choices are MKT price. I know seafood prices vary somewhat but I would think a Restaurant that is special for seafood could have prices for at least some lobster dishes. Wine and drink choices are Ok, but a full liquor license would be better"

  • "We sat down, and the couple at the table next to us got the lobster casserole, and it seemed divine. We knew that we were in for a great dinner. There is a large selection of oysters, and the waiter recommended the perfect ones after hearing about the type that we preferred. The seafood soup is not to be missed. We used all of our bread for the sauce. We also enjoyed the linguine with clams and the stuffed calamari appetizer. All are recommended. We look forward to a return visit to Mare."

  • "This place is a seafood lovers paradise. Oyster selection is fabulous. All of the seafood we has was incredible fresh and for the most part well prepared. My only complaint was the grilled seafood dish. The fish filets were a bit too char-broiled for my taste. The shell fish was all great."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "How anybody could say the food in this place was anything other than pig slop is a wonder. Although presentations were what would be expected in an expensive restaurant, there was a complete lack of inspiration in the kitchen. The fried calamari appetizer was the worst I have had in 20 to 30 years with the taste of flour paste...not one hint of squid flavor. When offered as a replacement, scallops selected. The sauce and cheese were as bland as water. The saluted scallops themselves were tasty, about the same as at any corner diner. Tough, overcooked lobster was surrounded by gooey bread with not a hint of seasoning in the casserole entree. One could have done as well with a bag of frozen imitation crab meat and commercial white bread.."

  • " The food was good, service was terrible. Our waiter made no effort to be gracious. Plunked our dishes down, disappeared for long periods of time giving us no eye contact. Our first dish was a risotto to be shared by the four of us. We had no serving utensils but were unable to get the waiter's attention. My husband got up and followed the waiter across the room to request a spoon. The waiter's response was, "don't you have forks?" We ordered a second bottle of wine. He poured about two thirds of the bottle. We asked for a second pouring. He said it was gone. The sound level was so loud we could not have a conversation. None of us could hear each other. We are unlikely to return."

  • "Mare is an oyster bar that has wonderful fresh seafood of all kinds. Their scallop appetizer was incredible; with a parmesan encrusted bottom on top of butternut squash puree, with scallops grilled to perfection. The grilled seafood platter had wonderful lobster, tuna, shrmp. "
