A word from Mare
Mare, Italian for ‘sea’ , opened in the summer of 2005 in Boston’s historic North End - only 100 steps away from Paul Revere’s house. Mare has quickly become this city’s most acclaimed seafood restaurant with accolades such as “One of the Top 80 Tables in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler and “Go to List” Food & Wine.

Mare is not your typical North End restaurant, the menu is light and healthy it treats all the ingredients with respect in order to highlight their natural flavors and not cover them up. Further, Mare’s modern interior, unbeatable city views and solicitous service draw crowds of all ages for the grilled Octopus, homemade pastas, whole roasted sea bass, stuffed lobster and more. Beer, 33% organic wine list and cordials served.

Lived up to the great reviews. Drinks and food were great. Service was very good; however I sensed a bit of pretentious behavior from walking in the door through departure. We were late for our reservation, but many tables were available. No one was rude, just a little edgy. No big deal. This happens at good places from time to time. Overall highly recommend this place. Enjoy!

We are from Portland, Maine so are very comfortable with excellent, small, neighborhood foodie restaurants. The greeting felt stuffy, but the waiter and table service was very pleasant and knowledgable. All the food except my lobster cassarole, it was dry, tasteless with little lobster. My wife's sea bass was amazing. We were never hurried and felt we could sit and chat as long as we wanted. I would deffinately recommend the restaurant to my friends. I'm hoping the cassarole was a mistake on the chef's part.

I came here on a work trip and was basically just hoping for a decent meal but everything I had was fabulous! They have a great wine list that has been recognized by Wine Spectator for multiple years. I had a wonderful mixed greens salad with great blue cheese and pears topped off with a wonderful vinegrette. The raw bar is extensive and delicious and finally I got the seafood soup for an entree which was absolutely fantastic (also huge).

Over the years I have intermittently dined at Mare and always thought it was fine. This week I have (by chance) been twice, and on both occasions I had an exceptional meal. The swordfish steak was the best I have ever eaten; the halibut was exceptional. It seems clear to me that the kitchen has significantly upped its game. Also, the service was superb. When asked to make some significant accommodations, our server not only took them in stride but also made useful suggestions in creating the necessary workarounds. I will go back often.

Chose one of the ten best rated seafood restaurants in Boston for a night out. Happened to be Mare. Quaint small in North end. Had a choice of appetizers for appetizer that our waiter helped pick. All were excellent. Our two entrees were spectacular. Server was excellent. Highly recommended . Wine choices a little excessive in price. Great bakery, Modern, for pastries and cappuccino around the corner.

It was a windy and cold Sunday evening but our spirits were warmed as soon as we.entered the restaurant. We were greeted by Crystals warm and opulent smile. We were handed off to David and the expectation for a culinary treat was immediately established. Davis was the best! His recommendations were progressive tasty delights on our pallets. He paired oysters with my wine... The seafood platter exceeded all my expectations. Don't miss this experience!

Mare is a small restaurant that sits on a corner in the North End of Boston. The walls of windows shows the hustle and bustle of the busy area. The restaurant itself is chic and classy. The oyster selection is amazing and everything we tried on the menu was 5 star. I would highly recommend this North End gem for a truly fine dining experience.

I surprised my husband for his 30th birthday as a romantic celebration! The menu and wine list were exquisite! The service was exceptional and they made the evening even more special by seating us at the best seat in the house....front corner with the windows open for Boston's fresh fall breezes to add a wonderful ambiance to the already magnificent atmosphere. A must visit when in Boston! The food was out of this world with filling portions that did not overstuff the light eater. The oysters were scrumptious! We will be back!!

We had an amazing meal at Mare. The seafood was so fresh and pasta dishes were excellent. It's just a bit cramped in there. The tables are so close to each other, we got to know the couple sitting next to us. It wouldn't be a place to go if you're looking for a quiet place for dinner.

Our food was very good. Great oyster selection. Seafood canneloni and wild boar pappardelle very tasty. Really liked looking out window at Boston skyline at night. There doesn't seem to be a full-service bar here--only one kind of vodka, e.g. (citrus-flavored), and our waiter had not heard of a Sazerac. We enjoyed ourselves nonetheless.

Broad selection of oysters and shellfish from the raw bar, great soups and salads and wonderful entrees. Everything was top quality prepared to perfection. Service was friendly, prompt and attentive. Freshest high quality seafood and italian creations. This place is very small, maybe 10 tables. Must have a reservation. If we are in Boston again we will be back. Can't miss North end gem!!!!

I had always wanted to try Mare, and got the opportunity on the spur of the moment. It is a very small, packed-in place, so we elected to sit at the bar, which was just fine because no one else was there, and the bartender/server was really nice! My friend got the cheeseburger (yes, weird at a seafood place) but he was sold on the Cabot clothbound cheddar, and bacon. :-) I had the seafood canneloni, which I think was the best I'd ever had--nice, thin pasta stuffed with flavorful shrimp, scallops, and swordfish.

Although I was with a less than adventurous dining partner, so didn't order my favorite octopus appetizer to share, the seafood meatballs we compromised on did not disappoint. Moist, with just enough filler to hold them together, the flavor and texture were spot on. My whole branzino entrée also hit the mark. Somehow I managed to make room for ricotta pie with my espresso for dessert as my dining partner devoured his cannoli. Service was excellent. Bravo again, Mare.

Mare came highly recommended - and it absolutely lived up to expectations. We were really looking forward to the oysters - they were outstanding. The special that night was the roasted branzino filet. No bones - cooked to perfection. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our entrees. The wine that was recommended by our server matched up well with each course. Overall, we would give it five stars (and recommend the oysters on the half shell)

We had a lovely dinner mid week at Mare. My husband and I shared raw oysters and clams which were super fresh and delicious! My halibut entree was extraordinary although very pricey! But it was worth every penny! It was seared, crispy and served in a clam chowder base with chorizo sausage. It was one of those entrees that I won't forget! My husband had the seared tuna and he said it was very good but not extraordinary. He had an "Old fashioned" cocktail that was very creative and flavorful! We had a red wine with dinner that was served "too warm". It was cooled down for us. The double espresso was "to die for". All in all, a wonderful experience at Mare!

I had heard about Mare for a long time, so I was excited to have the chance to eat there. It was not a good experience. The calamari had too much breading and did not taste very good. Had the $42 halibut with saffron sauce - could hardly taste any saffron and the very expensive halibut was over done and tough. Service was also disappointing, as on cleaning the plates from the table our busboy spilled the bowl of olive oil on my arm and shirt. He was going to walk away when I mentioned it. He said he would get a napkin that never arrived. I told the waiter what happened and he said sorry and dropped off the check. Didn't seem like they really cared. Made me very unhappy.

This was our third visit to Mare. We keep coming back because we really enjoy the food and service. The restaurant is small, so reservations are an absolute must. The tables are really close together. We started our meal with perfectly prepared cocktails and enjoyed appetizers of buffalo mozzarella salad, fried clams, stuffed calamari, and fried calamari. For entrees we had the lobster roll ( you can order it either hot or cold), angel hair pasta with scallops, lobster casserole, and halibut. Everything was expertly prepared and presented and the service was outstanding. It was a busy Friday night, but we never felt rushed. Expensive; but we will be back for the food.

My brother had been to this restaurant when previously in Boston. I looked up the menu and was sold. It was a short walk to Mare from the Liberty Hotel, which was really nice. We had reservations, but they were a little late in seating us (which is the only reason the Service Score is 4 stars). We had oysters and shrimp at the bar (both of which were amazing). The selection of oysters was awesome. For our dinner we had seafood pasta dishes-all of which were really good and made with fresh pasta.

Although the food is good most of the appetizers don't warrant prices over 15 dollars. I had the scallops with angel hair and it could have used a bit of imagination for the ingredients. My daughter's tuna was nicely cooked but rather boring. And what can I say about fried clams except they are. All in all we felt the bill was too high for this type of food. This is the 3rd time dining here and don't think we'll return.

The food here has always been spectacular. It was a letdown tonight, however, good but lacking in preparation in some areas. There was absolutely no seasoning in the polenta side dish we ordered, a huge mistake. Also, the halibut, a signature dish, was overcooked and a bit dry (though still delicious). Mashed potatoes accompanying the 7 spice chicken arrived cold. This has recently been one of my favorite restaurants in the North End. I will think twice about returning--for the prices, flawless preparation should be the standard.
