A word from Mare
Mare, Italian for ‘sea’ , opened in the summer of 2005 in Boston’s historic North End - only 100 steps away from Paul Revere’s house. Mare has quickly become this city’s most acclaimed seafood restaurant with accolades such as “One of the Top 80 Tables in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler and “Go to List” Food & Wine.

Mare is not your typical North End restaurant, the menu is light and healthy it treats all the ingredients with respect in order to highlight their natural flavors and not cover them up. Further, Mare’s modern interior, unbeatable city views and solicitous service draw crowds of all ages for the grilled Octopus, homemade pastas, whole roasted sea bass, stuffed lobster and more. Beer, 33% organic wine list and cordials served.

Diner Reviews
  • "I do not even live in Boston but I have been to MARE at least4 times in less than 1 year. The seafood is always fresh, the staff friendly and service is awesome!"

  • "The raw bar selection was great. All the oysters that I had were terrific. The salmon and stuffed lobster dishes that we ordered were also very tasty. We did feel however that everything was over priced."

  • "Definitely worth the trip from Texas! Little hard to find, lots of locals don't know about it yet apparently. For foodies, a must try! Food quality, presentation, service, price, oyster selection all fantastic!"

  • "Mare is our new favorite spot for special occasions! We have been now three times and we never had a bad experience."

  • "Mare is a fabulous restaurant! We celebrated our daughter's birthday in style. The service is excellent, the wine was wonderful, and everything we got from appetizers to entrees to a special dessert with a candle was truly delicious! A terrific choice for a special evening!"

  • "Great variety of very good oysters, seafood entrees interestingly prepared and delicious. I brought clients here and they were very impressed as well."

  • "As a restaurant week customer, our menu selection was limited, but when it came to the oysters there was no end and my guest and I took full advantage. The fresh oyster bar was exquisite, with its fresh and appealing selections, interesting combinations and a variety of flavors to add for each. We selected a number of oysters for both our appetizers and enjoyed them so much we decided to indulge in a few more in between our delicious main course and our decadent dessert. We had the best view of downtown at sunset, which only added to the rich ambiance of the restaurant, and our waiter was pleasant and well informed. Along with the smooth, prompt service and convenient location, this dining experience will be almost impossible to beat."

  • "This restaurant was recommended by our hotel, The Fairmont. I ordered the lobster roll and suffered through eating it. The lobster was overcooked, making it chewy and rubbery. There were also two pieces of shell on the bread. I complained and was told "sorry" without any compensation or offer of a free dessert. Terrible customer service. On the flip side, I will say the rosemary french fries were very tasty. I would not recommend this restaurant nor make a return visit."

  • "Overall a really good experience, with a few minor hiccups. We went on Saturday to celebrate an anniversary. We had to wait about 15 minutes for our table. Once we were seated the table next to us was seated within a couple of minutes. The tables are pretty close together, maybe 6 inches apart and the other couple was upset about the proximity and their table. They complained quite a bit so it disrupted our service. We were not able to order drinks or get bread for at least another twenty minutes after that. So, we just asked to order dinner when they finally came for our drink order. After that everything else ran smoothly. The food was great, nice inside, and the Nutella Martini was excellent - definitely recommend it! I would go back!"

  • "Went to the north end at the request of our daughter who was visiting us from out of town. We ran late for our reservation but were accommodated without any issues. We started with cocktails and oysters. Drinks were good and oysters were very fresh. I had the seafood wrapped with lasagna shell. Some of the shell was soft but other sections dry. Overall tasty but thought shell should have been moist throughout. My wife had the swordfish which she said was delicious. Our daughter had the octupus salad with a side of fries. She enjoyed both. The atmosphere is accentuated by the tall windows that give you a view of the quaint neighborhood. Service was attentive and efficient. We would recommend to others."

  • "Food was just OK. Would not order my entrée again. Wine & Oysters were excellent. Too noisy could not hear person across the table. Noise level made conversation next to impossible which made the evening disappointing."

  • "I've lived in the North End for almost five years and am embarrassed to say this was my first time at Mare... I can't wait to go back! The food was absolutely phenomenal."

  • "We went for Restaurant Week and chose Mare for the menu offered. The selection was more than ample for a limited menu. The food was delicious and our server was attentive and even switched out an item which rarely happens on a fix menu. Neither of us had been to Mare before but will definitely be back."

  • "I took my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner and was very impressed! The restaurant called a few hours beforehand to confirm my reservation, and said they got my note asking for a nice table because it was for a birthday. When we arrived, the hostess said "happy birthday!" to my boyfriend, as did many of the other servers. The food was good (we participated in the restaurant week menu options), and we were given the one table for two that was separated from all the other tables, which was perfect! Our servers were very attentive and polite. I would definitely recommend it to friends and visit again!"

  • "I made a reservation here for myself and one of my closest friends for a girls' night out in the North End--fabulous atmosphere, friendly wait-staff, and the food was top-notch. My 3-course meal was the spiced mussels, truffle and spinach spaghettoni (highly recommend this), and finally the flourless chocolate cake with hazelnut gelato. My friend and I were sitting nearby two couples (who were on dates) and they were so friendly--the gentleman told my friend that her dish looked incredible, and his date and I delighted in the fact that both she and I ordered the same dessert). This is to say that the crowd was pleasant, and not stuffy like the price range of Mare may imply. Mare is perfect for either date night or girls' night!"

  • "I wish our waiter was a little nicer to us and hadn't scoffed at us for asking for more bread a second time when he never fulfilled the first request. The gnocchi was kind of soggy but everything else was delicious!"

  • "we were a few inches from the tables on either side of us, and the servers had to squeeze between my chair and one the lady behind me used — not fun. maybe mare added more tables during restaurant week, which would also account for the completely-filled coat rack (making my table and another one have to keep our coats and add to the crampness). space issues aside, the oysters were delicious, and i would come back for more. food was generally fantastic (spaghettoni was great), the salmon wasn't super yummy."

  • "Great spot if you are craving fish! I had the tuna, which was outstanding! It was cooked to perfection. My boyfriend had the pasta with clams, which was also delicious. The service was just okay- knowledgable wait staff and very friendly but not too attentive. All-in-all it was a very good dinner!"

  • "Second visit and again overwhelmed by the extremely good food, wine and service."

  • "I love their expansive oyster/raw bar menu. Their service was a little awkward and the tables are tiny. But overall, I would definitely come back."

  • "My first visit here was during restaurant week. The staff was very condescending. Definitely don't let this be your first experience at a raw bar. They served a raw clam that I had never seen before. It was good, but when I asked what type of clam I felt like I insulted the server and couldn't believe how rude he responded. I felt the same way when one of us ordered wine, "Only ONE glass of wine." Yeah some people don't drink.... The oysters and fried clams were delicious, the entrees were TINY and lacked flavor, the salmon and tuna were around four square inches. The cake was good but the tiramisu was all cream, very little taste. I would consider returning just for the raw bar, not for dinner."
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "The noise level is quite high, and the proximity of the other tables is somewhat a problem. Otherwise, the food and wine selection was excellent"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "I initially was going to go for restaurant week, but realized that there was not a prefixe menu on the weekends. Regardless, I stayed because I was on a date. The oysters and littlenecks were fresh and succulent as expected. I got the lobster casserole which was perhaps a bit on the heavy side. But my girlfriend got a seafood pasta dish which I tried and thought was delicious! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a good, romantic setting."

  • "I went there with my boyfriend for Dine Out Boston! I believe the menu choices they had listed on the website were a bit different from when we actually got there, but all the food was excellent and our server was awesome. Mare is small, so the tables are a bit cozy, but really no complaints. Would definitely go back."

  • "Like many north end locations, there are great homemade pastas and a particular focus on fresh seafood. Everything was fresh and delicious, and I loved the cozy, romantic atmosphere with plenty of windows to make the space feel airy."

  • "The server was nice. The food was slow. I had to to shout, really shout to my boyfriend across the table. My food- oysters then gnochi and clams-was great. My boyfriend got mussels which were delicious and tuna that was not anything special. They do have an impressive oyster selection. It was a nice enough place, but not enough that I will go back."

  • "For such an award-winning restaurant, I have to admit that I was a little bit disappointed. It was delicious - no doubt about that - but if I'm going to spend $30+ per person on dinner, I expect stellar. The ricotta pie was poorly done. For my money, there are better options in the North End."

  • "Mare was delicious! However, it is very pricey- so the next time I may just go for oysters."

  • "Had been here last year for restaurant week, but was very dissapointed this time around. The menu offered was different than the menu displayed online. Food came out in very small portions and my main entree was fairly cold. Had great expectations based on my previous visit and was very let down by my dinner. Not sure if they were not giving their best because of the "Dine in Boston" event, but either way I will not be back."

  • "Incredible food, cooked to perfection, service was a little slow between courses but did not ruin my experience."

  • "If you're looking for a spot in the North End to get great seafood dishes, this is the place! From their raw bar selection to their main entrees, everything is delicious. I will say it is a little pricey to go regularly, but it's great for that special occasion! Delicious!!"

  • "This is an awesome restaurant. It was the second time for us at this place. The food is awesome as well as wine. We reserved at 7:30 but had to wait until 8:15. It seemed overbooked a little bit.... However, the ambiance and foodwere really, again excellent. Thank you! Our waitor was very good and answered well our questions. Thanks!"

  • "We went to Mare for my husband's 40th after seeing it on TV and it did not disappoint! The food was delicious and the restaurant itself was beautiful, although noisy. I would definitely go back!"

  • "I'm always somewhat amazed by the price of oysters, but they sure were good"
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "The first stumble was the lack of valet parking...not explained in Zagat or other reviews. Mare claims valet, but you need to go around the block to another restaurant-not a good arrangement for any who do not know this neighborhood. Service stumbled a bit and required some repeated flagging...dessert took 2 requests. Decaf coffee was terrible and left a "bad taste" after a pleasant meal. Desserts were so-so, meal was OK, but the oysters, the oysters-they sang!"

  • "Great food, service and ambiance. The seafood dishes we tried were unpretentious yet delicious. For a small restaurant it feels cosy, but unlike many others, it manages to be open and airy and has a great bar."

  • "small establishment - but very good food. The calamari was some of the best I have ever had. I ordered the grill seafood plate full of wood smoked then grilled lobster, scallops, shrimp, octopus, etc. Absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the halibut - which was also very good but the chorizo did overpower the fish. Would definitely go back next time we are in Boston."

  • "This is the third time I have eaten at Mare and once again I was not disappointed! I have to confess that each time I have had exactly the same meal - oysters to start and then the Angel Hair pasta with scallops. Even now on a Monday morning back in London my mouth is watering! It can get a little noisy at times, but that just seems to attest to the fact that prople are enjoying themselves. The service this time was particularly excellent - Daniel was attentive and very professional - a definite boon to the establishment. Thanks for a wonderful dining experience!"

  • "I cannot say enough about Mare! In one word, amazing! Eating there was an experience! It's small, but in a way that makes it quant and intimate! The service is great and everyone is so personable! Obviously though the main gem of the experience was the amazing seafood! It was not simply the quality of it, but the creative uses and combinations!! The simplicity of the grilled fish plate and the raw bar emphasize how great the seafood is simple and then dishes like the seafood pizza and the seafood canaloni wow you with how the flavors and seafood are combined to become something you didn't see coming!! I never write reviews, but had to here!! Amazing all around!! So in one word, GO!! And maybe another world, ENJOY!!"

  • "The food at Mare gets better every time with more and different selections all the time. The service is also excellent even with such crowded tables. The new chef has added some fine additions to the menu( Seafood meatballs, and kept some of the old favorites (Sardines, Wild Boar Pasta, etc) And of course the Raw Bar which changed this restaurant so dramatically. Only one slight problem, if they keep raising the prices, they will begin to lose some of their Repeat customers."
