A word from Mare
Mare, Italian for ‘sea’ , opened in the summer of 2005 in Boston’s historic North End - only 100 steps away from Paul Revere’s house. Mare has quickly become this city’s most acclaimed seafood restaurant with accolades such as “One of the Top 80 Tables in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler and “Go to List” Food & Wine.

Mare is not your typical North End restaurant, the menu is light and healthy it treats all the ingredients with respect in order to highlight their natural flavors and not cover them up. Further, Mare’s modern interior, unbeatable city views and solicitous service draw crowds of all ages for the grilled Octopus, homemade pastas, whole roasted sea bass, stuffed lobster and more. Beer, 33% organic wine list and cordials served.

Diner Reviews
  • "Well prepared seafood and a very nice selection of oysters. Service attentive and helpful, not overbearing."

  • "On a sunny Saturday afternoon, we had a leisurely lunch here. The grilled seafood plate was quite nice, with good sized pieces of fish, shrimp, and lobster. We also ordered separately a whole lobster. Be sure to ask ahead of time what the market price is - we were astonished when the bill came (even without the "stuffing" of calamari, shrimp, and other items it was way more expensive than we'd thought - shame on us for not asking up front). The desserts were the star of the show. The tiramisu and the chocolate cake were outstanding; the fig bread pudding was good but not nearly as flavorful as the other two. The server recommended a wine and allowed us to try it first, which we appreciated."

  • "Just a short walk from the Haymarket T station Mare was a great referral from a former Bostonian who new my love of seafood. The noise level could be problematic for some (my wife) but the food and presentation more than compensated to make for a truly enjoyable evening. The raw bar featured over fifteen flavors of oysters and included clams, lobster, shrimp, and crab. Other appetizers were noteworthy especially the fresh sardines prepared in the true Sicilian manner with pine nuts and raisins. Wonderful selection of wine and New England brewed beers made this a featured stop on our next visit to Boston."

  • "We sat down, and the couple at the table next to us got the lobster casserole, and it seemed divine. We knew that we were in for a great dinner. There is a large selection of oysters, and the waiter recommended the perfect ones after hearing about the type that we preferred. The seafood soup is not to be missed. We used all of our bread for the sauce. We also enjoyed the linguine with clams and the stuffed calamari appetizer. All are recommended. We look forward to a return visit to Mare."

  • "Revisited this gem with friends. We all enjoyed it immensely."

  • "The food and choices at Mare are still very good. The only problem is that so many of the menu choices are MKT price. I know seafood prices vary somewhat but I would think a Restaurant that is special for seafood could have prices for at least some lobster dishes. Wine and drink choices are Ok, but a full liquor license would be better"

  • "Mare offers great seafood paired with a contemporary ambiance in the heart of the traditional North End. With 6+ types of oysters always on hand and wonderful specials to be had, this is the place to come for seafood anywhere near the waterfront."

  • "My boyfriend and I have been here twice, each time the good and service was amazing! I recommend mare to all my friends looking for a date night spot!"

  • "We found the food yummy but overpriced. It was extremely loud in the restaurant. They did take reservations which was very helpful."

  • "I went on a recommendation of a friend and glad I did. This is a world class place. Best food and service. I would go again. If you are a serious foodie this is the place for you."

  • "Excellent oyster selection! Also got the lobster roll and a special - can't go wrong going here for a nice seafood meal!"

  • "This place is a seafood lovers paradise. Oyster selection is fabulous. All of the seafood we has was incredible fresh and for the most part well prepared. My only complaint was the grilled seafood dish. The fish filets were a bit too char-broiled for my taste. The shell fish was all great."

  • "How anybody could say the food in this place was anything other than pig slop is a wonder. Although presentations were what would be expected in an expensive restaurant, there was a complete lack of inspiration in the kitchen. The fried calamari appetizer was the worst I have had in 20 to 30 years with the taste of flour paste...not one hint of squid flavor. When offered as a replacement, scallops selected. The sauce and cheese were as bland as water. The saluted scallops themselves were tasty, about the same as at any corner diner. Tough, overcooked lobster was surrounded by gooey bread with not a hint of seasoning in the casserole entree. One could have done as well with a bag of frozen imitation crab meat and commercial white bread.."

  • " The food was good, service was terrible. Our waiter made no effort to be gracious. Plunked our dishes down, disappeared for long periods of time giving us no eye contact. Our first dish was a risotto to be shared by the four of us. We had no serving utensils but were unable to get the waiter's attention. My husband got up and followed the waiter across the room to request a spoon. The waiter's response was, "don't you have forks?" We ordered a second bottle of wine. He poured about two thirds of the bottle. We asked for a second pouring. He said it was gone. The sound level was so loud we could not have a conversation. None of us could hear each other. We are unlikely to return."

  • "Mare is an oyster bar that has wonderful fresh seafood of all kinds. Their scallop appetizer was incredible; with a parmesan encrusted bottom on top of butternut squash puree, with scallops grilled to perfection. The grilled seafood platter had wonderful lobster, tuna, shrmp. "

  • "Great seafood, right sized portions, beautifully delivered in a somewhat boisterous, friendly atmosphere. Too loud for a romantic night out, but perfect for a night out with friends. Any kind of oyster you can imagine!"

  • "Food was great, service was great as well. No complaints, I'll definitely be back! "

  • "The positive: fresh oysters. End of list. The negatives: overpriced and uninteresting - totally disappointing. Major anniversary yet nary a word from them. Oysters @ $3 per - really? For $13, a modest glass of pinot grigio, barely 1/3 full. Uninteresting salmon followed but only after the chef refused to cook the tuna med. rare that my wife actually wanted. My zuppa de mare was tasty, but a huge mess as neither the lobster nor shrimp were shelled yet sat in a thin red sauce. No extra napkins, scissors, bib, or hand wash were offered. The room is open but soulless, with a TV plainly visible from dining tables. This restaurant feels geared to the common denominator, but shows no passion for food or dining experiences. I will not be back. "

  • "We came to Boston to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. We had plans to meet her sister and brother-in-law for dinner, they live outside the city. When they arrived for drinks at our hotel, the sister from California was with them which was a perfect surprise (even for me). I immediately called the staff at Mare requesting they add another person to our party and move our reservation 30 minutes later. The restaurant was very professional and was able to help make our evening a great success. Thanks to Ben, our server, for his tireless efforts to keep our wine and water glasses full and the delicious food arriving on schedule!"

  • "We've been looking forward to this dinner all week. However, unlike previous visits, this wasn't as perfect as usual in regards to food. Our Welfleet oysters ranged from humongous to dime sizes. Those tiny oysters should never have left the kitchen. We loved the jumbo shrimps apps though. My husband's halibut was perfect. On the other hand, my linguine with clams was completely drenched with olive oil. I know olive oil is good for you, but when there's 1/3 cup of it still left in the bottom of my deep plate, it's rather alarming. We shared a slice of tiramisu...LOVED it! Our server was awesome! Very professional and he made sure our wine glasses were never empty. Very friendly guy. We'll be back.... "

  • "The waiters were so friendly and helpful! The food was delicious!!!! The ten of us all chose a different plate, and they were all great! The chef made changes to a plate after a request made my one of the guests with me. It was an amazing dining experience! "

  • "I gave the restaurant a heads-up on my gluten and dairy allergies and planned to order items that don't need a lot of adjustment to make them suitable for me. The chef was inflexible about not finishing dishes off with breadcrumbs, which was the only alteration I needed to be able to eat them. My options were raw fish or salad. I used to love this place, but I won't be going back."

  • "Can't say enough good things about Mare. Yelp reviews were not that great but my experience was outstanding. Started with U6 cocktail shrimp which were simply the biggest shrimp I have ever had. Dinner was a seafood di mara and wild boar pappardelle. The seafood di mare was very good with some exceptional clams and mussels in a very tasty tomato broth. The pappardelle was perfectly cooked. Wild boar was good but could have used more salt. Dessert was the Ah Foggato which was another winner and highly recommended. Best part of the meal was that all of the above plus an app special and bottle of white wine was only $150. I would have had no problem spending close to $200 for a meal of this caliber. "

  • "Went for anniversary - best decision since we got married. Comfortable night, windows open, beautiful breeze, crowded but not uncomfortable, great service, amazing food, especially the appetizers. Highly recommend the grilled stuffed calamari - so tender. And the mussels too."

  • "It was sort of bizzare. The service was odd, the food came out at different times, and the wine glass sizes were different (for the same shared bottle of wine). The people next to us were obnoxious young people (I was there on a date) and they complained about everything, thought in fairness, it seemed some of it was warranted. Our waiter when opening the bottle of wine we ordered popped it to harshly and spilled it over the above party. They were not pleased, but the restaurant didn't offer much in the way of condolence. Our waiter also kept taking our bottle of wine away from our table and was not very attentive at times filling it, and at others was overly attentive. The food once we got it, was pretty good, but the space was cramped. "

  • "We were rushed by our server through every course. Food was OK but not as special as we expected. Restaurant could not serve a full-strength cocktail, which would have been a deal breaker for this business dinner had I known that beforehand. After picking up my car from valet, my iPod was missing. We will not return."

  • "We have been to Mare several times now. The food is great, the ambience is nice; we enjoy the window seats where the windows open in nice weather. The service is excellent, we had Antonio and he was great!"

  • "Loved the information they provide to help you select the oysters, we tried many and all were great, clean and fresh. Our entrees were also good as was the wine but the oysters were the star. This place was packed and I'm glad we had a reservation. It's very small, like everything in the North End so it is not a quiet spot but that is to be expected. Definitely go to this restaurant! "

  • "My husband and I went out for drinks before deciding on Mare for dinner. We wanted seafood and that was our mission. We had great oysters! Service was nice and attentive. Our waiter was helpful when asked questions. My husband had the lemon pasta with scallops that were delicious. I had the swordfish and it was very tasty. My only complaint (and this is because I'm being picky)... I like a thicker swordfish steak and the piece that was served was thin, but large. All in all it was a tasty meal that ended with full, happy bellies. "

  • "We enjoyed a delicious lobster cocktail and also a scallop appetizer which were both excellent. The raw oysters were also wonderful. We would highly recommend mare for its delicious seafood entrees(our party had halibut, salmon and Sea bass, all beautifully presented)the ambiance fun yet cozy and we had great service."

  • "Wow, if you like oysters, you'll love mare! A fantastic oyster menu with accurate taste descriptions create a wonderful experience. If you make it past the oysters, try the stuffed calamari with broccoli. 3 stuffed squid are surprisingly filling."

  • "We went for my girlfriend's birthday. The food was great but the service was not. I felt bad, because it seemed as though our server was in over their head. It took about 15 minutes for anyone to come over to us and when they did, there was no acknowledgement, just "are you ready to order?" We wanted to order wine first, as well as oysters since that was what we came there for, but we felt rushed. The kicker is that since there was no one at the host stand to greet us, our server was the one that sat us! On the plus side, the food was excellent and the oysters were incredible and fresh! I just wish at some point someone would have recognized how long we had to wait for service (with a reservation!), because I'm very understanding."

  • "We were recommended this restaurant by a Boston foodie. And Have to say. The food was a little lacking in flavor. We started with oysters, they were fresh and probably the most enjoyable of whole meal. The octopus salad was presented in an artistic manner, but the taste and texture was blah and chewy, and the menu described jalapeno and ginger flavor was nowhere to be found. The seafood spaghetinni was watery and the crab and shellfish. That was on the plate wasnt worth trying to eat. The salmon dish had good roasted garlic and the puree was nice but the salmon although nice in portion size looked seared nicely but soggy textureand no flavor....disappointed"
