A word from Mare
Mare, Italian for ‘sea’ , opened in the summer of 2005 in Boston’s historic North End - only 100 steps away from Paul Revere’s house. Mare has quickly become this city’s most acclaimed seafood restaurant with accolades such as “One of the Top 80 Tables in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler and “Go to List” Food & Wine.

Mare is not your typical North End restaurant, the menu is light and healthy it treats all the ingredients with respect in order to highlight their natural flavors and not cover them up. Further, Mare’s modern interior, unbeatable city views and solicitous service draw crowds of all ages for the grilled Octopus, homemade pastas, whole roasted sea bass, stuffed lobster and more. Beer, 33% organic wine list and cordials served.

Waited almost 45 min for our 7pm reservation - told to sit at the bar where the wait staff kept bumping into us. Not offered anything compliemtary while we waited. Waiter at first attentive-- then not to be found several times. Food ok - at lot of up selling. Did offer us a complimrnatry desert for our anniversary which was nice.

Mare came highly recommended - and it absolutely lived up to expectations. We were really looking forward to the oysters - they were outstanding. The special that night was the roasted branzino filet. No bones - cooked to perfection. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our entrees. The wine that was recommended by our server matched up well with each course. Overall, we would give it five stars (and recommend the oysters on the half shell)

We had a lovely dinner mid week at Mare. My husband and I shared raw oysters and clams which were super fresh and delicious! My halibut entree was extraordinary although very pricey! But it was worth every penny! It was seared, crispy and served in a clam chowder base with chorizo sausage. It was one of those entrees that I won't forget! My husband had the seared tuna and he said it was very good but not extraordinary. He had an "Old fashioned" cocktail that was very creative and flavorful! We had a red wine with dinner that was served "too warm". It was cooled down for us. The double espresso was "to die for". All in all, a wonderful experience at Mare!

I had heard about Mare for a long time, so I was excited to have the chance to eat there. It was not a good experience. The calamari had too much breading and did not taste very good. Had the $42 halibut with saffron sauce - could hardly taste any saffron and the very expensive halibut was over done and tough. Service was also disappointing, as on cleaning the plates from the table our busboy spilled the bowl of olive oil on my arm and shirt. He was going to walk away when I mentioned it. He said he would get a napkin that never arrived. I told the waiter what happened and he said sorry and dropped off the check. Didn't seem like they really cared. Made me very unhappy.

This was our third visit to Mare. We keep coming back because we really enjoy the food and service. The restaurant is small, so reservations are an absolute must. The tables are really close together. We started our meal with perfectly prepared cocktails and enjoyed appetizers of buffalo mozzarella salad, fried clams, stuffed calamari, and fried calamari. For entrees we had the lobster roll ( you can order it either hot or cold), angel hair pasta with scallops, lobster casserole, and halibut. Everything was expertly prepared and presented and the service was outstanding. It was a busy Friday night, but we never felt rushed. Expensive; but we will be back for the food.

My brother had been to this restaurant when previously in Boston. I looked up the menu and was sold. It was a short walk to Mare from the Liberty Hotel, which was really nice. We had reservations, but they were a little late in seating us (which is the only reason the Service Score is 4 stars). We had oysters and shrimp at the bar (both of which were amazing). The selection of oysters was awesome. For our dinner we had seafood pasta dishes-all of which were really good and made with fresh pasta.

Although the food is good most of the appetizers don't warrant prices over 15 dollars. I had the scallops with angel hair and it could have used a bit of imagination for the ingredients. My daughter's tuna was nicely cooked but rather boring. And what can I say about fried clams except they are. All in all we felt the bill was too high for this type of food. This is the 3rd time dining here and don't think we'll return.

The Mare Oyster Bar offered a wide selection of foods that were prepared with a distinct and delicious flavor. We enjoyed steamed clams in a garlic, olive oil, tomato base that were fantastic. We then had a lobster casserole that was out if this world. They had a great raw bar which did not interest my husband or myself but we loved our meal. We highly recommend.

The food here has always been spectacular. It was a letdown tonight, however, good but lacking in preparation in some areas. There was absolutely no seasoning in the polenta side dish we ordered, a huge mistake. Also, the halibut, a signature dish, was overcooked and a bit dry (though still delicious). Mashed potatoes accompanying the 7 spice chicken arrived cold. This has recently been one of my favorite restaurants in the North End. I will think twice about returning--for the prices, flawless preparation should be the standard.

Our actual waiter was fine but nothing is more insulting when busboys are rushing to take away the plates from some diners who are finished while others are still eating. Clearly it is more important to management that they turn over as many tables as possible instead of their patrons having a decent time. It is rude, it makes us feel rushed and does not make the dining experience a pleasant one. It's too bad - the food was quite good.

My husband and I went to Mare for dinner on our anniversary and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Our waiter, Pepe, was very attentive and made us feel welcomed from the moment we sat down. We had the jumbo shrimp cocktail and a couple varieties of oysters from the raw bar to start. Then the potato gnocchi and seafood cannelloni as our entrees. All if the food was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Overall this is a great place for a special occasion.

Is the sentence we repeated over and over. We started with oysters, of course, and had a wonderful sampling of Damarscotta, Casco Bay and PEI. Then we had the "meat"ball! It was incredible- a combination of seafood with "sponge bread" which made the texture luxurious. But what did it was the sauce; a cherry tomato-crushed red pepper magnificence! I had the Lemon Angel Hair with 3 large seared scallops. The garlic cream sauce was plate-licking good. My dinner partner had the Wild Boar Pappardelle which was also scrumptious. There was no room for dessert! Highly recommend this for a special night out.

From the minute the waiter insisted they didn't offer a certain wine by the glass (which they did), to the wrong appetizers being delivered to our table and then the salad being overly salty, the dinner went even further downhill. The food was sub par and bland (although the lobster roll was seasoned, but overseasoned with lemon). Too loud, too crowded, wait staff was very rude and pretentious. Would never return again. Way over priced for the value. A big let down.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, we had a leisurely lunch here. The grilled seafood plate was quite nice, with good sized pieces of fish, shrimp, and lobster. We also ordered separately a whole lobster. Be sure to ask ahead of time what the market price is - we were astonished when the bill came (even without the "stuffing" of calamari, shrimp, and other items it was way more expensive than we'd thought - shame on us for not asking up front). The desserts were the star of the show. The tiramisu and the chocolate cake were outstanding; the fig bread pudding was good but not nearly as flavorful as the other two. The server recommended a wine and allowed us to try it first, which we appreciated.

Just a short walk from the Haymarket T station Mare was a great referral from a former Bostonian who new my love of seafood. The noise level could be problematic for some (my wife) but the food and presentation more than compensated to make for a truly enjoyable evening. The raw bar featured over fifteen flavors of oysters and included clams, lobster, shrimp, and crab. Other appetizers were noteworthy especially the fresh sardines prepared in the true Sicilian manner with pine nuts and raisins. Wonderful selection of wine and New England brewed beers made this a featured stop on our next visit to Boston.
