A word from Mare Culinary Lounge
Following the success of the Alessá family of three restaurants, award winning Chef Alessandro Pirozzi opened his new Mare Culinary Lounge in May 2012. Mare, the fourth restaurant in Alessandro Pirozzi’s Culinary Collection, is intimate, chic, and the perfect place to pop into for martinis and scrumptious appetizers. The hip, internationally inspired décor and imaginative cuisine brings haute dining to a piquant new culinary level. Among the recent phenomenal changes on the Laguna Beach dining scene, the most extraordinary was the late spring emergence of Mare Culinary Lounge.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "There were certain things that were really good, like the pesto sauce to dip your bread in, the two different carpaccio's that we had which were heirloom tomatoes with Burratta cheese and tuna with fennel, but the pizza was not good. The crust was mushy and the sauce too salty. I don't know if they were using a different flour but it was not as good as it was in the past. It also was so loud we could barely hear each other talk. They definitely need to work on that."

  • "The waiter did an excellent job explaining the specials. Both my date and I went for the sea bass. it was tasty if all your looking for is a snack. The ambience was great. I had to have two fish filets, fries and a apple pie later for my second course."

  • "Whatever Chef Alessandro suggests and he'll do it fresh from scratch, do it. He is remarkably talented, passionate and committed."

  • "We had a 6:30 reservation but they had us down for 7:30. Since I made it online I had the email confirmation. Our party had 4 ppl and they tried to seat us at a table for 3 ppl? Weird, we didn't fit at this table. She then says OK you can sit over there (the table RIGHT next to the kitchen, with only 3 chairs!) Ok, do you not see there are 4 ppl?? So she pulls up a chair from the empty 4 top table next to us. (There were plenty of 4 top tables open) Our waitress was efficient but one of the most unfriendly servers I have had. The food was very good, the cheese plate was phenomenal but for $250 I like to have enjoyable service. We may go back but there are SO many good restaurants this would not be a place I would specifically recommend."

  • "Good atmosphere; Comfortable dining experience with responsive server. All the dishes were very tasty, especially, the Chilean Sea Bass with a side of Pesto Gnocchi. Good Wine selection. Will definitely be back."

  • "We eat at Mare every time we visit Laguna. The food is excellent and on this particular evening we asked for a quiet table and they seated us on the patio. It was cool out but they had many several heaters so we were comfortable. It was very quiet on the patio but inside the restaurant it is pretty noisy. The bruschetta was fantastic and the pesto dipping sauce for the bread was the best we have had! As a side note, we have been here for lunch and brunch and we have never been disappointed!"

  • "If you want a romantic dinner this is your place! If you want the best french toast this is the place! Awesome food, friendly service , great atmosphere. I had gotten married on Valentine's day and we went to Mare Culinary Lounge for dinner reception and it was so memorable. The staff was execeptional the Salmon, Butternut Squash Ravioli, Lasagne, Fettucine everything was perfect."

  • "Chef Alessandro knows how to prepare and serve italian food. This local spot, one of two operated by Alessandro (also Alessa on Forest), is located where you wouldn't expect such a great restaurant - in the Holiday Inn on PCH. Taking over the small hotel restaurant, bar and patio space in this older hotel, Alessandro conjures up his amazing italian food nightly. It's not to be missed. When the weather is fair, the patio seating (inside the 'quad' of the Holiday Inn) is a delightful space given the overall location. The nightly specials are always first-rate, and the service is attentive. The restaurant interior is a bit modern-eclectic, but the food overcomes all."

  • "The food at Mare is very good, we went on a day they had a pre fix menu and was disappointed only because we have our favorites that we couldn't order - love the olives - pre fix was too expensive but still yummy."

  • "SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE!!! They acted like we weren't even there!! Food portion was tiny Servers were rude when you were uninformed about the menus items The bill came out to 144$ for 2 people After we left we went and got pizza becuause we felt like we ate nothing What a terrible place Please don't waste your money."

  • "The place no longer offers a weekend brunch, which has made the location even less busy. Service was sub-par; unlike the first few times I've been here which were excellent. I feel like this place is starting to go downhill."

  • "The first time my husband I went here it was amazing! Except the service was slow (they really needed an extra server) The food was so tasty that every bite I took was sooo delicious. Unfortunately this second time around it was off. We did have 10 in our party. I tried several of the other dishes and everything just seemed off. I will try this again because I will dream of their eggplant parmesan."

  • "The food and service were outstanding! The menu is classic Italian but not the heavy, tasteless offerings found at too many "Italian" restaurants. The sauces were light and flavorful. We were a table of 6 and the noise level was such that it was difficult for those on either end of the table to hear. Next time I would be more proactive about our seats."

  • "One of the best dining experiences we have ever had, much less affordable! We usually eat at high end restaurants, but were budget conscious this trip. Which was a blessing, because we found this place. Do t let the price fool you. Best food, best service ever. You will feel special."

  • "Food was fantastic. The service was without question the best service I've ever seen. We simply asked the waiter to have the chef prepare us a fine dinner, and he came out with several wonderful courses. Fantastic experience!"

  • "Mare is Alessandro Pirozzi's second fabulous restaurant in Laguna Beach. I am not really a pasta eater and there are loads of delicious options for me on this menu. I love the carpaccio of heirloom tomato (actually has some greens, burrata cheese and proscuitto too), the shrimp and fennel salad is amazing and my all time favorite: the warm branzino carpaccio appetizer. Yum!"

  • "This modern, sleekly decorated restaurant surprised us with how good the food was. The olives, ravioli, and prosciutto plate were outstanding. Nice selection of wines, especially wines from Italy. Service was good, not great. We were there late on Christmas Eve, and most of the staff wanted to go home. We will return."

  • "We have been to Mare about 9 times. The food is always excellent and the service good. Last night the food did not disappoint us at all. The service however was very poor. It all started when we got there, the hostess station is outside, the hostess said, let me prepare your table for you, and let the door slam on us as we entered the lobby. The waitress was slow in taking our orders, she would forget to bring things to our table, if we ordered a drink, we had to remind someone else we ordered a drink 13 minutes. When we finished our appetizers, we had to ask after about 10 minutes to have a bunch of empty plates cleared. There however a new manager that has been there a few days, I am expecting my 1 star rating to elevate back to a 4 or 5"

  • "We had a group of 24 dine at Mare and everything went as planned. The service was outstanding. Drinks were in hand a few moments after sitting down, apetizers out shortly thereafter and were excellent. The entres are priced right and you get a full plate of food that is 5 star quality. Can't wait to go back! Thank you Luigi!"

  • "Fabulous food! Excellent service by Luigi and Alessi. This is our favorite restaurant, and we have never been disappointed. Each time we go, and we go as often as we can, we are greeted warmly and served graciously. There is nothing on the menu that isn't out of this world. Try the cheese stuffed peppers as an appetizer!"

  • "First time at Mare, you could put me in any restaurant where Alessandro Pirozzi is in the back, and I'd know it was his cooking. Enjoyed the evening thoroughly!"

  • "I thought it was a really good restaurent. The food was very good, the service was good and it was very convenient to the hotel where we were staying which was the Pacific Edge Hotel. I highly recommend the place."

  • "This was my third time at Mare, and every time I have come away thinking how exceptional the experience was! The food is wonderful - I had the House Mixed Green Salad to start which has hearts of palm, shaved parmesan and just enough other veggies to make this a perfect starter with a fabulous vinaigrette. For my entree, I had the best gluten-free penne I've ever had - with a lamb ragout that was fabulous! The penne, probably rice pasta, was cooked perfectly al dente and had just enough of the lamb sauce to get a good bit in each bite. The portion was huge so I took half of it home and it was just as good the next day for lunch! I was too full for dessert this time, but you can be sure I will back many times. This is my new favorite in L.B."

  • "Don't let the fact that this restaurant is in a Holiday Inn prevent you from trying it. Overall, we had a great dining experience for dinner. I would recommend eating in the bar or in their outdoor dining area. The dining room inside seemed too loud to enjoy dinner. The food was fantastic and creative. You could spend an evening just sampling their starters! There are many other dishes on the menu I'd like to try and we will likely go back soon."

  • "Terrible dining experience - it was like being in a noisy basement; we were ignored for a long period before a waitrress finally acknowledged we were there; and the food was very poor. I would discourage anyone from going to this restaurant."

  • "We were seated promptly, had very good service and even a table side visit from the chef/owner. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The evening concluded with a complimentary dessert of oreo cookie gelato. We were staying in the adjacent hotel and found no need to dine anywhere else."

  • "Introduced friends to Mare a few months ago and they loved it! Begged us to go back again. We don't need much begging as it is one of our favorite restaurants. Service is fantastic as is the food. Hard to find anything negative to say about this place. Had my 60th party here back in March and have been back about 3 times since."

  • "had a very good time with very good food and service, but the patio is too crowded. they need to take out a table or two. it's so packed you can barely get in & out of the patio area. this also makes it way too noisy. its difficult to have a normal conversation with the people at your table. the service staff is good but they don't have any room to move around and service the tables."

  • "My husband and I both ordered lobster ravioli. It was horrible. The pasta itself was very thick, and drowning in sauce that was thick and bright orange. It was supposed to be a pink vodka sauce. They threw a lobster carcass on top of our plates as if that was decorative. (There was no meat in the shell.) I don't know what they did with the lobster as there was absolutely no taste of lobster in the dish. There was supposed to be one half of a lobster tail on top of the ravioli but actually there was only four little rubbery bites that were tasteless. A can of Chef Boyardee would be a million times better than lobster ravioli at this place. Don't waste your money here."
