Diner Reviews
  • "We selected Marcel's based on their excellent reviews and we were not disappointed. It was a special evening and the entire experience was delightful."

  • "The tasting menu was fantastic across the board. You have 3 choices for each course. There were three of us so we tried everything . Excellent!"

  • "We were in Washington for a week. We ate at a number of good restaurants, some very good, but Marcel's was certainly the best. Great service and food, and although not cheap, well worth the money."

  • "I'm been to many Michelin star restaurants and was disappointed at Marcels, being named 1 of the best restaurants in Washington. Their waiters are snobby, impolite and rushed. They failed to adequately time dishes so after 5 minutes of ordering our food, we were finished our amuse bouche and already into our first course! Also the waiter enters your dishes to the kitchen according to the order you order it, and does not re-prioritze your selections according to taste and flow. I was served with a salad as my fourth course and that was an amateur mistake the staff (kitchen and waiter) can make. The fish is dry and sauces lack the French touch. Most dishes were too salty. No service, we had to refill our own wine glasses a few times."

  • "Truly excellent food with a very diversified menu. Beautiful restaurant. Great service. Very expensive (around 400$ for 2 persons), but well worth it."

  • "Visiting from out of town, we picked Marcela because of good Open Table reviews, location (we were going to the ballet) and availability, then learned it is rated in the top tier of area restaurants, It was impressive from start to finish. Open but comfortable dining room, excellent variety of choices in the flexible prix fixe menu with options for numbers of courses. We started early and opted for the four course, rather than the special pre-theater 3 course bargain and were so glad we did. I don't know which course we would have skipped. Wonderful. And attentive but not intrusive staff kept the dinner moving the glasses filled without being pushy and go us to the theater on time."

  • "Visiting DC from out of state, met with a few other couples. $425 per couple with tip. We did the 6 course tasting menu, the food was great - no off-notes, but rarely exceptional (the amuse bouche, a crab creme brulee, was easily the highlight). Service was excellent - invisible but always attentive (although the endless stocking of the silverware table next to us was not ideal). Two low-priced bottles of wine for the entire meal (expect a 300% markup on all - generally $100 and up). The restaurant indicates jacket required, and most patrons were well-dressed, although a gentleman in a hoodie (really) was noticeable, also. In retrospect, I would have rather bought a plane ticket with the money, although a nice, relaxed, well-cooked meal."

  • "The service was excellent, attentive, friendly, but not hovering. The front end staff was gracious and pleasant. The food....wow, just great. We had mostly seafood, but the fillet minion was also spectacular. They really balance out the plates with fresh ingredients, a gentle hand on seasoning, and really bring out the natural flavor of the vegetables and proteins. Great food."

  • "A wonderful restaurant. Great food great service. When I visit again I will be sure to go to Marcels.Absolutely loved it."

  • "It was my husband's 50th birthday, we went here to celebrate. They were all ready for us with a special menu that said Happy Birthday on it and everyone we came in contact with wished him happy bday all night long. That was really classy and impressive. The food was impeccable. It was different, exciting and really fun to experience so many flavors in each course. O course such perfection comes at a high price. But this is one of those situations I say you get what you pay for, in a positive way. You pay a lot but it's worth it. Great place for a splurge for a special occasion."

  • "I can pretty easily sum up this experience: Lovely ambiance. Gracious service. Delicious, exquisitely prepared dishes. Expensive. Tiny portions. Portions are the size of those at small plates restaurants (e.g., tortellini course consisted of 3 tortellini on the plate); only problem is this isn't actually supposed to be a small plates restaurant. Food ranged from good to outstanding in quality. Some things were not as good as I'd hoped (e.g., the melting chocolate cake for dessert). Overall a lovely experience, but for the price, I won't be rushing back."

  • "We went to Marcel's with close friends from California whom we seldom see. Conversation was as important to us as the food. The atmosphere of the restaurant and the minimal intrusiveness of the staff both met our needs well. And the food was superb from start to finish, well deserving of the high regard in which it is widely held. A special dessert that night, a pineapple soufflé, was the biggest hit of the evening. A white asparagus soup drew similar raves. We wine-by-the-glass people were delighted with our choices. It was a most satisfying evening."

  • "I have been here twice and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an amazing meal that is well worth the money. Chef Paul does a spectacular job making sure that everything you eat has his personal touch. Everything I have had there was amazing. Don't let the description freak you out if you are scared to try something. If you get the tasting menu, you can have the chef choose for you and I would highly recommend that. There is nothing bad there. Johnathon, our waiter, is extremely attentive and made sure we never needed to even ask for anything. He also is a wonderful character who made our meal extra fun."

  • "Absolutely delicious food, presented perfectly. A bit pricey but totally worth it especially for that special occasion or business meeting."

  • "Wonderful, delicious and creative meal. We had the five course tasting menu. Varied and interesting choices. Service was exceptional, but discrete. Would definitely return to Marcel's, hopefully soon."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "The tasting-menu size portions vary a lot; some are almost nothing, others quite substantial. Quality is high, but whether it's up to the prices, I'm not sure."

  • "I have eaten at this restaurant twice and the food was perfect! Service impeccable. A bit pricey with meals at about $100-$150 per person with tip. If you want a special meal this place should be at the top of your list."

  • "Good food, good service, even if the service sometimes if overdoing it."

  • "We arrived on a very cold night and our first table was a cold table near the door. We asked to be moved and got a less cold table near a window. Generally service was top notch except for a very long wait between the first two courses. They second course was only warm as a result. The food was of a high caliber but not innovative, nevertheless we enjoyed our meal. We would however not come back on a very cold night again as we would wait for Spring or Summer."

  • "Instead of a tasting menu where the chef decides the entire meal for you, the tasting menu at Marcel's provides three suggestions for each course, and diners can order whatever they want in any order or a la carte. This flexibility was comforting to me for my first experience with a tasting menu; tried six courses in the recommended order in the end. Each course was great and taught me something about food - started out with an appetizing fois gras torchon with grilled brioche and two different reductions; finished strong with a fun pear tatin on flaky puff pastry accompanied by creme anglaise, pistachio sauce, and other elements for texture. Delicious. Steven, who waited on my table, was friendly and indulged my explorations of the food."

  • "I went to Marcel's for my birthday this past Sunday. I was welcomed by a small shrimp type of cream brulee and bread with three different types of unique butters. I then had the scallops, followed by duck and lamb. Out of the meals, the duck rocked! The flavors were amazing and went well together, except for the cherries (I thought they were a little overwhelming and took away from the harmonious flavor of the dish.) A perfect ending was the pineapple souffle; it felt like a wonderful spring day in my mouth! Lastly, It was a very welcoming environment and I recommend this for anyone looking to have a nice meal."

  • "It was very good but probably overpriced. The most tasty was the amuse bouche at the beginning."

  • "Marcel's has always been a top choice for my business dinners. Unfortunately, my most recent experience was not quite up to par. The food was excellent as usual, but the wine service was very slow, to the point that the wines did not arrive with the appropriate food courses. Then, when we were ready to leave, we could not get the waiter's attention for the check, even though he was serving a table next to ours. The final straw was when the valet returned our car with a muddy footprint on the inside of the driver-side door."

  • "Great service and food. Everything was exquisite. My friend and I enjoyed the five course meal. Portion sizes were perfect and each course was complex and interesting. Will return!"

  • "Food: was good and refined, but one expects good food in this price range. Nothing memorable though. The bison strips and the single ravioli especially good. Ambiance: outdated, stale econo-formal as opposed to elegant formal."

  • "My server left something to be desired. We made reservations for my birthday dinner, and everything was perfect; the food was amazing, the ambiance was romantic, and the restaurant was living up to every review I have ever read, more recently the TOP 100 Washingtonian edition. But my server just seemed out of it, not as attentive as I would have expected from a restaurant like this, and just had an overall "blah" attitude. I would come back and recommend to others, but I would hope for the time and money they'd spend there that they would get better service than we did."

  • "My husband and I were disappointed. I think that the biggest problem was the timing of the meal. It took 15 minutes after we were seated for the server to take our drink order, then another 10 - 15 minutes before it arrived. The delays between the courses were over-long. We ordered the four course tasting and we sat in the restaurant for 2 hours. The food was good, but the experience was not worth it especially given the price (the tab was about $250, including tip and one glass of wine)."

  • "The food was fantastic but the service was even better. For a place that looked like it would have very stuffy service, the staff at Marcel's was professional yet friendly and engaging. I would definitely recommend it."

  • "Wonderful memorable meal. Would definitely go back. The only thing I would have changed is to have quicker service. Felt like we waited an eternity between all courses, including obtaining the menus and wine list. It was a lot of waiting and waiting and waiting. Other than that, superb food."

  • "Food choices are challenging. Makes it difficult to decide. All courses were exceptional, including duck, and bison. Ambiance service and food are great."

  • "Marcel's is a special place. The food, service, and atmosphere are excellent year after year. My wife and I dined here on Valentine's Day and were once again impressed with everything, food and service especially. Marcel's is on my DC short list for romantic special occasions."

  • "While I would not call this the #1 dinner excursion I have ever had, it is extremely high on the list, probably top five. There was not one single dish or moment that stood out as mind-blowing, but the overall experience from the instant we arrived was consistently excellent. I have dined at Wiedmaier restaurants many times. This one is the cream of the crop. Marcel's is pricey, but you already knew that. Based on this experience, if you want to treat yourself on a special occasion, Marcel's will not disappoint. It is an understatement to say the chef knows what he is doing, the sommelier is in perfect harmony with the chef, and all the staff are clearly interested in providing you and your companion(s) a sublime experience."

  • "Special attention from the staff from the moment we entered Marcel's to celebrate our anniversary. Jonathan, the Senior Captain, attended to our every need at the dinner table, offering helpful suggestions and making us feel special. We had the seven course offering from a special anniversary menu. Food was superb, as was the presentation. A very special night all the way around. Bravo, Marcel's! We can't wait until our next opportunity to return."

  • "We have high expectations for this restaurant. Why shouldn't we given its reputation and price. We were on our way to the Kennedy Center for a show, so the three-course prix fixe menu was our best choice. While the food preparation was very good, our waitress (although well meaning) either did not have enough experience to perform her job, or she was clueless. When we inquired if my wife could substitute a dessert from the main menu for the choice of the two on the smaller menu, the waitress said that substitutions were not possible -- like we were dining at Denny's! It is not that the dessert my wife wanted had some rare ingredient or there was not enough time to prepare it -- we had an hour until the dessert course. At $100 a person ...."
