A word from Marathon - 19th & Spruce
Marathon has served the neighborhoods of Philadelphia for over 25 years as a family-run restaurant group. We serve well-made American classics, and strive to source the freshest food locally available to us, including from our own Marathon Farm in Brewerytown, Philadelphia. Our favorite farm to table items include our grass-fed Cheesesteak, free-range Turkey Plate, and fluffy Omelettes made with cage-free eggs.

We love food, but more importantly we create the food that people love to eat. We set out each day to provide our guests with a complete feel-good dining experience in a casual setting. We offer warm and personal hospitality rooted in a real concern for our guests' experience and we believe that everyone should be able to afford delicious food. We bring people together through food, personal connections and artistic spaces.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a great meal with great service. Marathon has an interesting menu that wont break the bank. The food is consistently good and a nice ambience. Service is professional and top-notch."

  • "Great nite @ Marathon Grill. Food and service were excellent! The Philly chesse steak won ton appetizer - deeeelish! Fun place to go before comedy show with friends."

  • "Staff are so pleasant and accommodating -- even during the lunch rush, and we were late for our reservation because we couldn't find anywhere to park! My mom and I both got salads, which were very hearty and filling for lunch with lots of great flavors and fresh ingredients. I love that they have their own urban farm and source locally. And to top it off, it's very affordable!"

  • "This restaurant is a convenient place for a relaxed lunch with friends in center city. There are many menu options. The service is pleasant but slow and the music is too loud. I have always enjoyed the food. However, this time I was disappointed. The turkey mango salad had shredded turkey, not chunks, and not much mango. I would still return to this restaurant."

  • "I always love the food at Marathon, but this time it was topped off with excellent service! I met up with old friends and they didn't make us feel unwelcome for sitting longer than usual. A great mid priced place to eat in the city!"

  • "Not the first time we have waited for a loooong time for food - at least 45 min. Water barely refilled during that time, no update from staff. Weeknight and busy but not full by any means. Food is consistent here and we like the menu, service is friendly but usually we go to Marathon in our neighborhood as a reasonable and healthy option alternative to cooking at home, and the wait sort of defeats that purpose. We did not order appetizer course and I think this also was the case the other times we have waited forever... Maybe this throws them off but for a pasta and salad?"

  • "I frequent Marathon for either a leisurely or business lunch. Food is always fresh and timely service."

  • "We each enjoyed a different salad - they were delicious. The server was courteous and pleasant. It seems to take a long time to get served even when there are not many customers. However, it's a great place to meet friends for lunch in the neighborhood. I will return again and recommend it to others."

  • "This place is a good for meeting friends for lunch. Many lunch options on menu. The food is good. Service is a bit slow. I have been there many times and will return often."

  • "Average is the word. Good food for the price you pay, so cannot complain. Service was ok, not professional but not bad. I would assume that you don't come to ask us if we like the food and everything is ok with it, 3 seconds after we got it. give us a minute to try it. it was like that all the time- over trying. which means they try and they care, which is good, but the result is not helpful or professional. It's convenient and not expensive, so I assume I'll be back. Definitely not my top choice with all the options Philly has to offer."

  • "We happened to stumble upon this gem the first time we visited Philadelphia. We swore we would return to this place the next time because they have fabulous smoothies. The food is wonderful. They serve just the right size meal and the price is very good. I may have to plan a trip to Philly just to eat at this restaurant. "

  • "Are server wasn't very present. We had to ask several times to have our waiter come over. He didn't check occasionally to make sure everything was ok. The food was excellent and the ambiance of the restaurant was great. It was somewhat bus though."

  • "The food is wonderful and there is something for everyone. I wish the service was as good as the food, we had to ask several times for water refills and bar drinks."

  • "Our table for 8 was ready for us when we arrived. The lunch menu provided enough choices for each of us. Most of us took some of the lunch home since the serving sizes were more than adequate."

  • "We have been enjoying Marathon at 19th and Spruce for 3 years now. Live in suburbs. Take train and walk through Rittenhouse Park fine. Love the menu, especially because of locally grown ingredients and grass fed beef. Favor the steak frites, turkey and meatloaf and pasta bolognese. Wish you served a Pinot Grigio though. That is all I drink. But our waiter, Kevin, brought me another white, which was very good, dry! Only other negative was paying extra for a couple of rolls with our dinner. We will be back."

  • "All around good dinner experience. The food is fresh and simple. The drinks were done well. Casual environment, even for dinner on Valentine's day. Great place for brunch too."

  • "We enjoyed Caesar salad and Greek salad for lunch. I like the menu variety - something for everyone. Very pleasant neighborhood restaurant. Not too noisy or crowded for weekday lunch. Great place to get together with friends."

  • "Was able to make a reservation with open table for 8pm on a saturday night early Saturday afternoon. The place was packed but our table was waiting. Drink from the bar were yummy and the food was delish and not over priced. Big portions as well! Great place to meet up with friends."

  • "Absolutely love Marathon! My boyfriend and I have been a couple times and we really love it. It's great for when you don't feel like cooking, want good food, but don't want to go anywhere pretentious or formal. The decor is really cool and for such a small space it never feels crowded. However, we had a few hiccups on this visit. Even though we had a reservation we ended up having to wait 10-15minutes for a table because they seemed to take too many reservations for that evening. The hostess was somewhat apologetic and we ended up grabbing a drink at the bar. Our waiter on this visit was a little hover-y which got annoying. In terms of what to get, I recommend the Greek salad and the adult milkshakes."

  • "My husband and I took the kids to Philadelphia for the MLK long weekend and we were staying downtown in Rittenhouse Square at a hotel. We wanted a kid-friendly locally-owned restaurant with a healthier menu selection. Plus, we did not want to spend a fortune. I found Marathon on Open Table and it turned out to be the perfect place for us. We had salmon, a salad and there was a nice selection for the kids. I had a glass of wine, my husband had two beers and the kids had root beer floats for dessert. Our bill totaled $75. Not too bad. We also liked the idea that the restaurant uses local farmers and their own farm as suppliers. All-around a great, casual spot for dinner."

  • "I came here with my friends on New Year's Eve only because we couldn't reserve a table at the Marathon on Sansom but I was surprised by the great atmosphere and excellent service. I wish there was more options for mixed drinks but nevertheless, the food and drinks were great. I would actually recommend my friends to come here instead of the one on Sansom street."

  • "This restaurant is a great place to meet friends for lunch. The menu has many options so guests can always find something they like. It's a pleasant atmosphere and pretty quiet during the week. When it's packed on weekends or holidays, the noise level is very high."

  • "Good place to meet friends for lunch. Wide variety of menu options including interesting salads. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and fresh lemonade - I like half and half."

  • "What a wonderful dinner we had here tonight! I was craving Marathon's classic turkey dinner which always eases the craving for comfort food in classic American style. Sliced turkey breast with whole-cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes with ample gravy and wonderfully seasoned broccoli. Delicious! Paired with a glass of their house Riesling and it was a perfect way to end a cold and snowy day..."

  • "Good food - very generous portions - better than typical pub fare, something for everyone, and good quality ingredients - good options for kids / family friendly - room is on the louder side, so not great for intimate dinners or date nights."
    Dined on 12/27/2013
  • "Why do I keep going back here? It's just not good in any way (xcept for the pancakes which are done well). Still, not even the best pancake could save this pathetic excuse for a restaurant. Please move out of rittenhouse!!!"

  • "We had a group of 8 people and got the large table in the back. We enjoyed the broiled trout and the spruce salad. Service was a bit slow because it was very crowded for the holidays. It's good neighborhood restaurant offering many choices - something for everyone. I have been there many times and will return again."

  • "Although I had made specific time reserved for my group yo have dinner my impression was that they were not aware of our arrival and we were seated at some random seat. Hence, I didn't see the need for me to go through the trouble making reservation aheqd if time."

  • "We are from out of town and were looking for some place that both my children could eat. One is vegetarian the other is always looking for an adventure in food. Marathon was a great place for all of us. The server was outstanding, very friendly and accommodating. Food was spectacular, our only complaint is that we don't have a Marathon in our home town. :)"

  • "The service from the beginning was great. Our waitress was attentive and fun. Prices were extremely reasonable and the addition of the "Marathon Weekend Menu" was much appreciated. We loved the total experience, will recommend this place to others and will definitely go back on our next trip."

  • "We each enjoyed a different salad for lunch - all were tasty. I like fresh-squeezed orange juice combined with fresh-squeezed lemonade - the only place that has both. This place is a favorite for lunch near Rittenhouse Square."

  • "We were actually trying to eat at another local eatery; the wait was too long so we ended up at Marathon. I thought my guests (both in their 20s) would appreciate the casual bar-type menu and the drinks. It was about 8pm on a Thursday, and the place was dead--that should have told me something. All I can say is everything we ordered was surprisingly bad. I'm talking raw inside burgers, soggy fries, wilty salad with dry, skimpy salmon thrown on top. The bill was expensive considering that the poor food preparation. And the service was no better. Our waitress seemed like she had already "checked out" for the evening. When I could catch her eye, she would say OK to a request and then never bring the thing we had asked for."

  • "Having been to the 16th St location recently, I was glad this location was less busy at lunch and hence less noisy. Service and food were good and the prices are great! I certainly will be back and maybe try the outdoor dining. I had forgotten that Marathon started in the NE at the Roosevelt Mall- I think that was my first time in one way back in the 80's!"
