Diner Reviews
  • "The food is amazing! Everything from the gator bites appetizer to the southern fried chicken to the bread pudding was perfect! Went with a group and I recommend a reservation because the place is small and gets very very busy. My one negative was the noise level, so if you're looking for somewhere to have a quiet meal this isn't it. But if you like BBQ this is the best place to go! I will be returning to try more of the menu."

  • "True Cajun Creole BBQ food! Always fresh! My favorite is the Char-grilled Oysters! The best! I also love the Craw-fish stuffed bread. Both are appetizers but are very filling. Ribs, Clam bake, Brisket and Duck...all exceptional. Food is very, very good!! A great find. I will definitely be back!"

  • "While looking for a BBQ place we found Mara's Homemade. There is good BBQ here, but so much more. The menu is a binder full of tastes for every person. Our whole family loves the food which is reasonably priced. The service is wonderful. The menu is accompanied by an equally diversified drink list. You will not be disappointed."

  • "Been to Mara's a few times and always leave satisfied. Food, service and prices are all very good, as are the drinks. Pleasant servers, diverse drink menu, quality food and variety of choices makes this a place you can go with just about anyone."

  • "What a great find. Wonderful food and lots of fun. Mara is so nice and spent some time talking with us. I will definitely be back. The chocolate cream pie is amazing. I'm still thinking about that pie."

  • "I love southern BBQ, and this place is as close to that as I have found on Long Island. This particular night all of us ordered ribs and chicken combo - the chicken, unfortunately, was dry, but the ribs (and some of us had baby back, and others the St Louis cut) were great. All the sides were really good too, especially the onion rings. They need to add regular tea, both iced and black, to the menu. Passion fruit/mint or whatever it was, is just wrong. I will be going back for the ribs and onion rings."

  • "We've been coming to Mara's for about a year now and have always had a pleasant experience. The food is fantastic, the menu is HUGE, and there are always several delicious specials to choose from as well. Service is usually quick and friendly as well, and the servers are pretty knowledgeable about the menu items. The whiskey list is also extensive (and they have whiskey flights!) if you're into that sort of thing."

  • "It isn't easy to find a place on Long Island that serves up authentic southern specialties including New Orleans favorites like Oyster Po Boys and Crawfish Etoufee, but Mara's does it! Great cornbread, great fried chicken, and you can even order a crawfish boil if you don't mind working for your food."

  • "We've been going to Mara's since they were in the city. When we heard they were coming out to Long Island we were thrilled. It's one of the few restaurants that we order different things each time we go. From soft shell crab po boys to the ribs & smoked duck you never go wrong. Last night I had catfish smothered in étouffée, I dreamed about it. Just perfect. "

  • "On an island full of pizza places, chinese, burger, fast food this place is a great change of pace. The food is great and the place itself is different. My wife and I have been coming here since their days in manhattan and we couldn't be happier that they are here. You can have anything, soft-shell crabs, po boy, crawfish everything is amazing. The hurricanes are a must as is the strawberry pie."

  • "We went on a Mother's Day outing for dinner at Mara's and were exceptionally pleased. Everything, I mean everything was top quality and very good eatin'. Fried oyster appetizer was out of this world. We all went medieval on the BBQ. The young-in and I had some mighty tasty BBQ ribs, Arkansas style and the Mrs loved the pull pork. The sides were great and fresh fresh fresh. Some interesting beers on tap too and a full cocktail bar. We will be back. Y'all come back now, y'hear?"

  • "We go to Nashville, Memphis and Alabama five times a year. We've eaten at Neele's, Rondavous, Jack's, Tim's, etc. Mara's is right up there. While the portions are huge, she doesn't fill you up on rice and fillers. The food menu is extensive, as is the beverage menu. We can't wait to show Mara's off to our Southern visitors."

  • "Family owned charming little restaurant with extensive menu if southern favorites at reasonable prices. St Louis ribs were amazing...meat fell off the bones and were moist and juicy"

  • "Great southern cooking - if you are looking for it you have found it! Lots of southern classics with their own spin. Everything is fresh and house made. Don't miss the key lime pie!"

  • "My husband and I have eaten here several times before & this time brought another couple with us. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal, from the beef ribs to the tilapia, the redfish & various apps. The only complaint we have is it's always overly warm in the restaurant. Their heating/cooling system isn't efficient. The night we ate there all four of us were very uncomfortable with very little cooperation in cooling the place down. "

  • "It was a great night out! A birthday dinner with my family. Food was fresh, hot food came to the table HOT (which I loved). I would recommend the grilled oysters to anyone and everyone."

  • "Mara's surpassed all of our expectations! After reviewing the menu online, we decided it was a perfect place to celebrate Mom's 67th birthday. The staff were incredibly helpful with deciding the best dishes to order. The hush puppies were perfectly cooked. Crispy on the outside and moist in the middle. My brother in law raved about the Gumbo for the entire meal. The jalapeño corn bread was perfect. The owners came over and wished mom a Happy Birthday, and even though she opted out of dessert ( the portions are that big), they brought over a shot glass with whipped cream and a candle! We are already planning our next visit with more family and friends."

  • "Ambience is great. Vast seafood menu. If you like shellfish - it is a great place. The meats and desserts are a little dry though so bewarew."

  • "The menu is off the charts but what I can't get over is that everything that I've had so far is better than the best! How can it be so? But it is!! Shrimp and grits are the best that I have ever had. And the team is so friendly and welcoming. You can't help but feel that you are sharing a remarkable experience with everyone else in the place. And you are!"

  • "Always hard to decide what to order because everything is so good. Crawfish pot pie was amazing! Rack of lamb, tender and flavorful. Dark chocolate soufflé is one of the best you will ever taste. Could eat here every night!"

  • "There may be no ambiance to speak of in this tiny, local hideaway, but the food speaks for itself. The ribs really do fall off the bone. I'm not a big fan of Okra, but you can their fried okra like potato chips, you can't have just one. Mara, who is very welcoming, came to our table and offered very good recommendations based on our likes & dislikes. Overall, a very nice lunch."

  • "Enjoyed the authentic Cajun flare at Mara's with a date. The food is pretty good and they are the only place I know of on Long Island where you can get decent New Orleans/Louisiana fare. Stick to the basics here, crawfish, oysters, po boy. I also had the ribs which actually a bit dry, maybe prepped to far ahead but the BBQ sauce was tasty enough to distract me. The salad and oysters were great, sides of fried okra and mash potatoes also very tasty. The Whisky/Burbon list is unmatched in the area and if you want to drink this spot is perfect, maybe a bit overpriced because of location, specialty drinks should be in the $8- $10 range not $14. Overall I reccomend and anticipate they will continue to improve."

  • "love Mara's and it is definitely one of our go to's on casual nights. Very disappointed with management as they do not allow you to swap sides. My husband ordered a fish special that came with collard greens, he asked to swap the collard greens and the waitress said the owners do not allow that. She also described that it would come under the fish with sauce on top. When it came out, it was in a different dish on its own as a side. Ridiculous in my opinion and it wasn't even touched, so that's just wasting food. Besides that the food is good, but terrible management skills."

  • "Mara's is a small little neighborhood place with a big menu and great understanding of hospitality. The menu is very large with an emphasis on the owner's southern roots. The best features are the New Orleans inspired dishes and the southern BBQ. If you like crayfish and shrimp this is definitely for you. For adventurous appetizers try the charbroiled oysters; don't forget to try the crayfish bread (definitely on my list of best things I ever ate). Best part is the bar service. This is one of the more interesting things to drink. Tell them what you like and they will bring you several different bottles, many of which you may never have seen, and they will tell you the back story of each liquor and what it is like."

  • "Our first time at the restaurant. Food was very good, large portions! We had the peeled shrimp, mara's salad, fried chicken and both kinds of ribs. We enjoyed them all. Tried 3 different types if beer that was on tap. Enjoyed those as well. Definitely will go back. Give it a try."

  • "Went on Valentines day. have been going to Mara's every 4-6 weeks. Restarant was very crowded Friday night. Service was a bit hectic at first as servers seemed overwhlemd. After initial seating things settled down nicely and everything was great. Appetizers of Fried Green tomoatoes to start was delicious and main courses of Ribs and brisket and catfish was good and unique as well. The soufle and strawberry pie as desserts were great and had incredible flavor."

  • "Yes it is, and it's damn good, too. They've got things that are unimaginable up here (who stuffs bread with crawfish?) but are absolutely delicious! Authentic cajun food in New Yawk, who wouldda thought?"

  • "Eating at Mara's was a wonderful dining experience. Mara was very accommodating when I had to change my reservation at the last minute. The food was delicious and the service was good on a busy Saturday night. I had the fried chicken, which was not encased in a thick, crusty batter; rather it was in a light, well seasoned coating. The 1/2 chicken was moist and delicious. My wife's brisket sandwich on a baguette was smoky and tender. The menu was extensive and kid friendly and the portions were generous. The only drawback was that we were seated right next to the front door which allowed cold air in every time the door opened. Mara was very attentive, coming over to our table several times to see how our meal was."

  • "Food was delicious but they didn't have two of the items we actually came to the restaurant for. Additionally they didn't have the tequila we had asked for. The restaurant was busy and I would definitely go back to try again, but to run out of food and drink for a 7:30 reservation on a Friday nite, seemed odd."

  • "Truly authentic New Orleans cuisine. Try the Po' Boys, Char Grilled Oysters, Crawfish Bread, Shrimp Boil and chicken fried steak. In fact, try it all . . . it's an extensive and diverse menu."

  • "This Manhattan East Village transplant, family owned and run by native southerners, is an ethnic gem for a suburban neighborhood like Syosset. Having been to New Orleans half a dozen times, I can attest to its Cajun authenticity. The Crawfish Ettouffee is loaded with sweet tasty crawfish, cooked to chewy perfectection. The catfish is always fresh and flavorful, whether done with cajun spice over a bed of kale, or pecan crusted. The crawfish stuffed bread is also a treat and the blackened swordfish fresh and well spiced, The fried okra is among the best I've had. I haven't sampled from their barbecue menu but friends I dined with raved about the brisket. The pecan pie was a bit chewy for my taste but very flavorful. 2 thumbs up!"
