A word from Mar Belo
Portugal: Land of Explorers In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the navigator ordered his explorers to bring back to Portugal any exotic fruits, nuts and plants from the new lands. Tomatoes and potatoes are taken to Europe, Brazilian pineapples were introduced to Azores, Brazilian chili peppers grew in Angola, African coffee was transplanted to Brazil. Today the Portuguese fondness for ingredients like cinnamon or curry powder, is also a legacy of his time. The Romans brought wheat and introduced onion, garlic, olives and grapes. Later the Moors were the first to plant rice and introduced figs, planted groves of lemons, oranges and almond trees. Portugal is a seafaring nation with a well-developed fishing industry trading cod since the 15th century. Today, naturally, Portuguese cuisine varies from region to region , but fresh fish and shellfish are found on virtually every menu. BOM APETITE!!!!Continued
Diner Reviews
  • "Food was amazing and at a very reasonable price-point. Service was also perfect. Everything came out in a timely manner, and there was ample time between courses. Waiter was super friendly and really made the entire experience. We will definitely be back!"

  • "The wait staff was very attentive and knowledgable about the specials and the wine list. They were very upbeat and always asked if the food was good of if we needed anything else. A great place to dine and definitely will return."

  • "We had a wonderful meal with both seafood and meats here, in a setting of low-key elegance. The food was significantly better than even the other fancier shore restaurants. It was skillfully prepared, and beautifully presented. Beautifully seasoned and prepared octopus, the perfect simplicity of grilled sea bass, the fabulously rich pork and clams were all outstanding. Even the simple arroz con pollo our daughter ordered was made extra special with the addition of house-made, deeply smoky, chouriço. Portions were hearty, but not overwhelming, so we had room for appetizer, dinner, and dessert without feeling bloated. We will definitely be back."

  • "A real neighborhood gem. Wonderful, authentic Portugese food. Friendly, helpful, professional service. Nice ambience, good noise level for conversation. Bar area in back looked like a fun place to be. We will be back."

  • "Best portugués cuisine in town. Great entrée choices. Management and waiters go out of their way to provide you excellent service."

  • "Exceptional Portuguese food, polished, professional wait staff, beautiful renovation. All adds up to a near-perfect dining experience. Near perfect because: A) sometimes the food is overly salty and B) the appetizer portions are small relative to their prices. Do not expect the enormous portions you are used to when dining in Portuguese restaurants in Newark's Iron Bound area. That said, what you do get is fresh, high quality, and beautifully plated."

  • "Went here through a recommendation. Service was excellent. We ordered the garlic shrimp, split a house salad. Entrees were rack of lamb with mint jelly but they also had a great garlic sauce with it. Also got a light tomato broth base with seafood. Both dishes were excellent. House red sangria was on sweeter side but it was very good as well. Highly recommend it."

  • "We dined there last Friday and were pleased to see some fine tuning on the menu some new dishes including the grilled shrimp which are an absolutely wonderful. I normally have fish and they had the best Halibut that I have had anywhere recently with fish there are two things freshness and cooking and this was great halibut that was cooked perfectly washed down with some of their Albarino it doesn't get better then this. The service is always great the staff is terrific If you want good food and great people who want you to enjoy yourself this might be the place for you."

  • "A nice find away from the pier in Long Branch. The food was good as well as the service and atmosphere. I would definitely dine there again."

  • "Food excellent...service started good but then got really bad. A party of 8 sat down next to us and the server completely forgot who we were. It took them 30 minutes to ask if we wanted coffee and they gave us the desert menu.. Very poor service!"

  • "I was at this restaurant several times when it was the Pearl of Lisbon. I was glad to see another Portuguese eatery takes its place. We had a reservation for 7PM on a Saturday night and were seated immediately. The service was attentive with a charming, knowledgeable waiter. The food was excellent. We ordered grilled tiger shrimp and ribs that were so tender a knife was not needed to cut them. When we finished our waiter asked if he could serve us a complimentary drink at the bar because the table was needed. That was a very nice touch that I have never had offered anywhere else. We declined, but might not next time. Because Mar Belo is not BYOB, one drink apiece added quite a bit to the tab. But we plan to return."

  • "We arrived on time for our reservation, highly recommended, for a Friday or Saturday night and were seated promptly. We ordered an appetizer, Shrimp with garlic sauce plus a large pitcher of the white sangria, very good. Our entrees included the NY Strip steak, the Salmon & the Cod fish all were delicious and the pricing was very reasonable, $108.00 for the three of us plus the tip. Me being a big eater could just about finish the cod fish and the same goes for the other two entrees for my wife and friend, we brought home a little less than half of the steak and the salmon our friend could not finish."

  • "A restaurant is the some of its parts. Food + service + personality and Mar Belo has all of these working very well. Make no mistake its not for everyone. If you don't like good fish or beef and don't like a wine list that is studded with gems under $30 then you won't like this, but if you are looking for those beat a path down to Long Branch just don't make it difficult for me to get a reservation since this is one of my go to places"

  • "Mar Belo is a surprise find in Long Branch. We enjoyed a lovely mothers day dinner there with authentic Portuguese cuisine and wines. Cristiano, our server, was charming and knowledgeable and made sure the evening was special. Every dish was well prepared; the seafood was fresh and tasty. If you enjoy trying new wines, put yourself in Cristiano's hands. You will not regret it. We will be back!"

  • "The food was outstanding and the wine was an affordable yet very nice selection. Where else can you get a $6 glass of Malbec that was delicious? The paella was wonderful - filled with the usual fare cooked just right! They just need to work on the service. Until then, go to enjoy the food and expect very leisurely dining. "

  • "We were a party of 6 on a Saturday night. The waiter was very friendly and made us feel very comfortable. The problem was that he also had other big parties and so at times the service was a bit slow. When he comes over he is very attentive. The Sangria was enjoyed by all. Drinks are reasonably priced. I had the pork and clams, while it was good, it was not the best I have had, not even close. I would come back, but I would order something else. The Shrimp and Garlic and the Chorizo that we had for appetizers was very tasty. Good bread too. "

  • "You don't have to go all the way to the Iron Bound in Newark to experience great Portuguese food. Mar Belo in Long Branch NJ is the place to go. Sea food, pork, chicken, steak, garlic sauce. They got it all and it's delicious. Go there. Try it. You won't be sorry"

  • "Mar Belo was outstanding. The food was fresh and delicious. The portions were generous. The menu was varied and interesting. The wait staff was friendly, efficient, and energetic. The decor was modern and classy. The wine list was great. My husband and our friends loved the sangria. It was the best dining experience we've had in awhile. I would highly recommend Mar Belo. We can't wait to go back! And this review is coming from a generally finicky and harder to please person. I think Mar Belo is my favorite restaurant right now."

  • "This was my first time dining here and I am very glad that I had this opportunity. Since it's a fairly small restaurant that's packed, it's not very quiet, and it doesn't take much effort to hear what people in the surrounding tables are talking about. It was a little difficult to hear the waiter, but had no trouble placing our orders. The food arrived hot and fresh, it was very good, albeit a bit salty. I never salt my food so perhaps this is why the pork and clams seemed overly heavy, but otherwise it was tasty and I enjoyed it more the next day as leftovers once the sauce was removed and it had a chance to hang in the refrigerator overnight."

  • "Not much to add . This restaurant in General is outstanding . It's a little noisy and the tables are super small! That's my main concern. Need more space and I think everyone that go there will agree that it's kind of tight specially the tables for 2."

  • "Been looking for an excellent Portuguese restaurant close to the shore, [Long branch] easy to find parking and close to the beach everything about this place is outstanding , from comfort to the food and the servers [ by the way they are very knowledgeable ] I recommend this place to anyone that appreciates good food, and the prices are not bad at all"

  • "This was our 4th visit and it was a busy Saturday night, however neither service nor food suffered. Our party of four was all over the menu and everyone was happy with their choices so I won't single out any one dish but the fish is always good. The only comment that I would make is that the specials while excellent seemed smaller in portion then the regular menu items. Of course that may be due to the fact that the people who ordered them enjoyed them so much that they wanted more. A great local spot when you are in the mood for a touch of Iberia."

  • "Things started out well! Appetizers were very good; chorizo was excellent, garlic shrimp was tasty. Salads were fresh, dressing was good. For the main course, I had a Mar Belo sirloin which was very tasty, but did have some chewy, grizzly spots. My wife had the Mariscada in Green Sauce which is a favorite of hers and (we thought) a perfect choice at a Portuguese/Spanish restaurant! To say the least, she was disappointed. The dish lacked flavor, she complained about it, the waiter took it and informed us that the chef would 'remake' it. It was returned with more cilantro chopped into it, but other than that, still no flavor. She did not eat it and it was removed from our check. I don't know if I will be able to get her to go back again!"

  • "We walked in to a very attractive contemporary looking restaurant that you would have never guessed was there from the outside of the building and it just gets better from there. Its warm and friendly with an attentive staff and a menu that should satisfy anyone. The special was beef short ribs and they did not disappoint. The Mariscada was very good certainly as good as many restaurants down Neck. We are looking forward to our next visit. I would be remiss if I did not mention Christiano' s excellent and attentive service. He won't steer you wrong on the menu"

  • "Food was wonderful in an outstanding fresh, clean and warm atmosphere. Friendly staff, but I don't see them turning over tables as the wait between courses and even for the bill at the end was very, very long. This was a Saturday evening, many tables, but not totally full; wouldn't like being there when the place will be mobbed! Had to ask for the bread to be warmed and with wonderful Portuguese rolls they need to be warmed; we asked and they complied. Parking was easy off street in the back lot and with easy access thru their rear entrance which really seemed like the main entrance. Appears to have an area set for outdoor dining for warmer months which will be nice, although this backs to a residential urban neighborhood & not a sea view."

  • "Interesting menu, a nice variety from other local restaurants. A broad range of foods from beef and chicken to seafood. The wait staff is attentive and friendly. Customer service quality is just as important as food quality."
