Diner Reviews
  • "It was my first time dining here. My friend and I enjoyed the 2 appetizers we ordered - a chickpea thing and then the eggplant chips in tamarind. The entrees were rather bland. I had a chicken dish that my server mentioned would be on the blander side and he was right. It sounded like a good combination but it didn't live up to my expectations. My friend got the shrimp dish and was disappointed in it."

  • "The food was really good, although the salmon came to our table just lukewarm, as if it had been sitting waiting to come out to our table. Flavors were still good, but had it been hot, it would have been so much better. The papri chaat was delicious, as was the korma. The lentils were also not quite hot enough. Service to get the food out while it's hot is an opportunity."

  • "This is our second trip to Mantra. My husband and I are new to Indian food, and it was a pleasure to see the menu describe the dishes, plus helpful waitstaff. It was tasty, but sometimes I wish there had been a bit more for sharing. Our waiter was very friendly, helpful, and yet not overly attentive. I definitely go again, to try more new things."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal at Mantra. It's right in the middle of Mount Adams, which makes it convenient to visit Playhouse in the Park, or a coffee shop thereafter. Definitely will be a place we return to."

  • "Went to an afternoon event downtown and then brought my wife and 2 teenage daughters to Mantra. i had just returned from India and looked forward tot he American interpretation of their food. The meal was excellent. Their wine pairings were generous and excellent. We will return."

  • "Had dinner before going to Playhouse in the Park. Food was very good and service was outstanding. We went early so parking was great, we didn't have to rush and we could just walk up the hill for the play. It was a very nice evening."

  • "Being a foodie my husband and I decided to step out of the box with dining. The restaurant just opened for the evening as we were the first diners. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and helped us out with describing the entrees. The restaurant was black wooden tables with sectioned off rooms like the space was a house before. Nothing fancy, simple colors. Food was delicious and tasty, I will defiantly make another trip in the future to mantra on the hill."

  • "The food selections are consistently good across the entire menu and over all courses. This restaurant offers an excellent night of dining at a very reasonable price."

  • "Could be the best Indian food in the city, but it took them almost an hour and a half to get the entrée to the table. Also, there is a separate dining room in back that is very spare and colorless - and the noise level in that small room was much too high. However, they were kind enough to move us quickly to the main restaurant area upon request."

  • "Food is good- not your typical indian food, more contemporary. Great for friends. Reasonably priced."

  • "There are so many unique items to chose from on the menu, each time we go, we just order a bunch of food and share everything. We tried the Papri Chaat and it was delicious. I always get the Chicken Tikka Masala and it did not disappoint. Whole meal, two people, apps and drinks, two entree's, $45. Can't beat it. And not a morsel of food left."

  • "Some of the best and most creative Indian food in town"

  • "One of the best restaurants that nobody knows. Everything a neighborhood gem should be: great food-yes, ambience-yes, value-yes, pleasant knowledgeable staff-yes! It's especially convenient if you are going to Playhouse in the Park."

  • "service was poor. food took a long time to arrive. waitress kept suggesting more expensive wine and then brought a different one than we ordered. food was "fair" and disappointing. . we had looked forward to a special evening and dinner and we were very disappointed. we wished we had gone to another establishment that was less expensive and yet provided a quality meal. we will not plan to return and will not recommend to others."

  • "This was our first time here and had a wonderful experience. Zach our waiter was knowledgable and attentive. This was our first time truly eating at an Indian restaurant and as such had to rely on Zach's expertise. He gave wonderful descriptions and the food was even better than he described. The food was fabulous and we would definitely return. Just give yourself time to enjoy the atmosphere because it is not fast paced."

  • "My wife and I ate at Mantra on the Hill on a Saturday evening. We had made reservations a week in advance and were promptly seated. Despite the fact that at least a third of the tables were empty, the two cooks in the kitchen were unable to keep up with the orders. Our appetizer arrived in a realistic amount of time, and the fried eggplant slivers were outstanding! But it took 75 minutes to get our entrees (yes, you read that correctly). When the food came, it was very good. The lamb was tenderMilk, and the chicken was tasty, with just the right amount of spice. Our waitress was great, but there was only so much she could do. However, I certainly can't recommend this place based on our experience."

  • "This place was quite nice but and good and if you live in the Neighborhood you should give it a try but be aware, the portions a bit on the small side."

  • "This is a fine dining restaurant with an Indian twist. It is quiet, elegant, and has a good wine and beer list. These are minor considerations, though, beside the excellence of the cuisine. From the garbanzo bean salad to the chocolate creme brulee, every single dish was perfection. Our party ordered mostly lamb dishes and vegetables, all delicious. You know there is a master chef at work here."

  • "After reading many good reviews, I was excited to eat here. Not sure if the chef was absent that night or what bit our meal was nothing special. A group of four tried 2 apps, 2 naans and 4 entrees (one from each menu category). The presentation was altogether lacking and the food itself was just okay. Nothing was outstanding. We did have great service."

  • "I'd never been to a true Indian restaurant, and when I joked about the huge spoon in the place setting, one of my party of six, who had traveled in India, told me it was for sharing. Another of the party suggested we just order six entrees and share them all, and then another of our group told our server to just bring us the six best things on the menu. I believe the server was named Zack, but at any rate he did a great job at designing our meal. He even brought a seventh entree just because he couldn't decide on the best six! Everything was great, and the desserts were wonderfully odd and delightful. I'm not from Cincy, but if I were I'd eat there often."

  • "Mediocre food + SLOW service & kitchen and inattentive wait staff + extremely loud music (sure the one or 2 classic Hindi songs played were appreciated but if ur gonna blast it at least make sure it's a good playlist)"

  • "Food great. Contemporary ambiance. Bartender/waiter Zack was excellent. We let him choose our food. Superb. I 3-starred service only because the staff needed one more person for efficiency. Staff was largely rushed off their feet."

  • "This was a great night - the restaurant is cozy and in the heart of Mt Adams, so convenient and scenic. The food has classics as well as contemporary dishes. It took a really long time to choose as there were so many amazing options. I definitely recommend!"

  • "Had dinner with a friend at Mantra this past Friday. First, the menu was great fun to explore, with lots of new (to us at least) Indian choices. Waitress was helpful in choosing dishes and wine. Main dishes had a bit of heat, definitely not too much, probably 2/5 or so. Also, in contrast to some reviewers, the serving sizes seemed just right - the main dishes are served in an upright small buckets that look small but hold a good amount. This sort of vertical serving helps to fit more dishes onto the table without crowding - very clever. Overall a great evening and I'm looking forward to going back to further explore the menu!"

  • "Overall, I found the food quite good, but not extraordinary. It was a bit expensive for what you received. For the price, I could have had the same quality food and experience for much less at some of the other great Indian restaurants around town. Still, delicious and glad we went. With regard to our server, she was a gem. Attentive, but not disruptive. When the kitchen was running late on one of our dishes, she let us know right away and was very apologetic. Luckily we were not in a hurry and it didn't matter to us. She was a sweetheart, though."

  • "Restuarant was very quiet and slightly hard to locate. Difficult to find parking nearby . I didnt expect that food would be authentic Indian. Though found food quality to be really good as compared to other Indian restaurants around. It was very quiet and not many people were around for dinner. overall expeirience was good ."

  • "The waiter was very nice and the restaurant was very cute but the food fell very short. I love Indian food! I love trying new dishes, the spiciness, and the extra large portions. We had the shrimp and the vegetable purses as appitizers.. They both were good but nothing special. The main course was a coconut chicken curry with onion. It completely missed the mark. It lacked any spice or full flavor. In summery the main dish was just plain boring. Sorry we really wanted to like this place but we can get cheaper, better Indian food in Clifton."

  • "Food was well prepared and serving sizes ample. The staff are pleasant and competent. This is an Indian restaurant that will adjust the hotness of the food. In some cases it left my bland and my husband's not hot enough. I would go again but not so soon."

  • "Mantra on the Hill offers many dishes with an Indian influence but that go beyond the traditional offerings of an Indian restaurant. The sauce on the lamb chop is fantastic. The naan is also delicious. The only problem was Mantra cancelled my reservation for some reason, but Open Table fixed the error and awarded my points."

  • "The food is quite good here once you finally get it. The restaurant was not crowded, but appetizers took over 1/2 hour to arrive. Our commments brought no apologies or explantions."

  • "I recommend Mantra for anyone who loves great Indian food with a contemporary twist. We started with four different appetizers that we all shared. We ordered the eggplant chips under the advice of the waitress and it turned out to be a favorite among all of us. Two of us had some of the traditional Indian dishes on the menu, Palak and Biryana which were the best that I have ever tasted. The other two had more contemporary meals, lamb shank and lamb chops and they were also amazing. The menu was extensive and easy to navigate, and there is many vegetarian offerings. They also have a lot of great wines and beers. It was quite enough for my party of four to hear without yelling. I can't wait to go back and try some more."

  • "So many awesome choices we will have to come back again and again to try new things....but the eggplant appetizer will certainly be a do-over! Thanks to the great waiter for his superb direction and for being on top of things from start to end."

  • "Intimate atmosphere and rustic lux decor combine to create a unique upscale Indian cuisine experience. The innovative interplay of complex and subtle flavors immediately reminded us of a favorite Indian-and-Latin American fusion experience - in Chicago. It is somewhat rare to find a dining experience of this ethnicity and caliber in Cincinnati - every item we tried was outstanding, flavor, presentation, portion, value - and the wine pairings were perfect. We will definitely be back!"

  • "We came this time for my birthday and expected a great time. I have never ordered the same thing twice here, except for the papri chaat (which is a necessity when eating here), and I have never been disappointed. This time I took the sever recommendation and this may have been the best meal I had here. The service was a little slower than normal on this visit, but there were several large groups that might have slowed things down. Otherwise, this was another great experience at Mantra."

  • "Loved the food and the service was great! The only thing missing was the ambience. In the past when we have dined here, there was candlelight and dimmer lighting. This time, no candles and the lighting was too bright. Other than that, it was a great experience. We definitely will dine here again!"

  • "My wife and I were celebrating our first date 27 years ago. I had roses sent to the restaurant and they stored them refrigerated over night so they would be fresh the next day when we arrived for dinner. They put us in a nice little table were we could sit side by side and were in a little corner of the dining room. The waiter was very attentive and took great care of us. The food was wonderful. Indian influenced but with a twist here and there to make it special."

  • "From the time we were seated to the end of the meal (dark chocolate creme brulee -- yum) it was wonderful. The server had just the right blend of efficient and friendly. He made recommendation and then didn't cop an attitude when we didn't take it. I love the menu which has such a nice variety and offers a wine suggestions. A lovely evening in a great part of town."

  • "We love Mt Adams and being Indian we were looking forward to trying a new type of Indian restaurant in town. Overall, we enjoyed it and for someone who wants different style Indian food it is great. The Chaat appetizer was really good and nicely portioned for 4 to each have a good taste, but main courses were small for the price. We got 3 meat dishes and a vegetable for the 4 of us to share and needed to order another dish plus dessert. Lamb chops were WONDERFUL, and bindhi/okra was too. Lamb biryani was good. Nice to see Jingha Caldeen on the menu but it was thin in spices and not my favorite. Dark chocolate creme brulee was yummy and would have been better warm. Wines were good and servers were excellent/helpful."

  • "This was my husband and my first visit to Mantra. They had some unique dishes as well as others you'd find in most Indian restaurants within the U.S. We tried a couple of different items and were pleased. Will return again to sample the "traditional" Indian dishes just to see how they compare to what we've had at other Indian restaurants. Overall, a very nice experience."
