A word from Mandu - 18th Street
Mandu opened in the fall of 2006 by Chef Yesoon Lee and her two children, Jean and Danny. Located on 18th street in Dupont, Chef Lee presides over the kitchen making sure that the recipes and dishes taste as she was originally taught being raised in Seoul. Her specialty is creating homestyle Korean dishes that one would enjoy in her own kitchen. Jean and Danny run the operations and service, making it a fun and energetic environment that provides the comfort and ease of a neighborhood restaurant.   • "Was here for happy hour and the food was so so. Got some fried stuff, probably the platter, and it's stuff covered in egg then fried. Mandus were full of fillers. No wonder they're inexpensive. Service was great though. Would probably come here for dinner and not happy hour. Bibimbaps look promising."

  • "I went with a group of ladies to try the brunch. The food was delicious! We were really blown away by how tasty and different the brunch option is. There's just one small complaint - there is only one thing on the brunch menu! It's like a bento box, and a creative take on brunch. You can pick different kinds of meat, and everyone loved it! But there's just the one and only option - we wish there was at least a little variety or something else we could come back to try. I'm guessing it's a better dinner place, since the food is delicious! And there's a lot to try on the dinner menu."

  • "with upscale presentation and pricing. quality was very good but coming from someone more familiar with hole in the wall korean restaurant prices and presentation had a bit of a sticker shock. however it is nice to see korean food gentrified in a nicely decorated environment. i would return to try some other dishes. we had kalbi and dolsot bibimbap for mains and half order all beef jeon and soba salad apps. everything was very good food wise. ban-chan was a nice selection of vegetable dishes. service was a bit distant."

  • "I met two former colleagues at Mandu for lunch. We're all foodies, so good food was important--and we had dined previously at Mandu. Equally important was the opportunity to talk comfortably, without having to compete with a noisy restaurant and without feeling rushed by restaurant staff. Mission accomplished. We'll be back."

  • "I came here for dinner with a group of 9 people for my birthday. For $4, we ordered mandu (dumplings) to share and sojutinis while waiting for our entrees. The steamed mandu was delicious and fresh, as was the stone bibimbop with fried egg. The sojutinis were pretty good but not my favorite drink. I would definitely come back for mandu and bibimbop, and would love to try their Korean BBQ dishes."

  • "While the food at Mandu isn't crazy-authentic, it's solid fare and would be a great toes-in-the-water experience for less adventurous eaters. Both my friend and I got the brunch special with the pork, and it was a great way to sample their menu. The pork was excellent (I'm not a big meat eater, but Koreans do pork right - I was relieved not to be let down!) and I especially enjoyed the chive pancakes. The rest was so-so. It was good, and I didn't regret my meal at all, but I think that their menu as a whole probably offers better. Service was great. We got there close to opening, and it was pretty empty, but by the time we left it was busy inside. Next time, I'll come back for happy hour and order the Mandu or other dim sum offerings."

  • "Other than enjoying bulgogi, I don't know much about Korean food. I can say, however, Mandu has wonderfully tasting food ranging from flavorful mandu to a crisped rice-based bibimbap that had my group returning for a second visit. Staff are friendly and willing to answer questions for those of us who are new to the cuisine. And, if you find sake too strong for your tastes, definitely try the sojutini with aloe - it's wonderfully light, refreshing, and goes well with the food."

  • "My roommate go out and try new restaurants all the time and I think I have to add this on to our permanent list. We went during happy hour and each got one of the sojuntinis (I got the aloe and she got the orange). They were only $4, strong, and amazing! We got the pan-fried pork and beef dumplings and I could have made a meal just out of those they were so good!! We both got the bimbibap in the hot stone bowl and the $2 extra was worth it for the extra crunch in the rice. The sauces are sweet and spicy and the egg on top was cooked perfectly. We left feeling full, satisfied, but not gross. Definitely a meal worth every penny!"

  • "I have recently been introduced to Korean food and was looking forward to sharing the experience with family from out of town. The rice bowls and appetizers were good (but not great) and presented in an attractive manner out of the kitchen. Unfortunately, it seemed most of the wait staff was clueless. Our server had to be asked to take away empty dishes, did not refill water glasses, and seemed impatient with questions about the menu. The person who brought the food could not answer any questions at all, but said she was new (so maybe should get a pass). The staff needed more training before they went out on the floor with customers. The outside dining looked really nice."

  • "Dined early on a Sunday evening - cheap beers ($3) from 4-7pm, and the mandu dumpling appetizers are also on special. We got the veggie version which were great. I had the kimchi bowl with chicken which was incredibly flavorful but bordering on too spicy. My fiance order the veggie bibimbap in the stone bowl, which she is in love with. The stone bowl definitely seemed like the most popular thing to order. Service was a little slow but that wasn't an issue on a laid back Sunday. The outdoor area is great once it warms up a little. Interior is minimalist but bright and pleasant. Overall a great experience, high quality ingredients, and affordable for the amount of food. The tasting plate was a welcome surprise as well."

  • "Visited Mandu with my ladyfriend last Saturday night. I've also been to their K St location, which I slightly prefer. The service at both locations is excellent - friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating (I have some dietary restrictions that can make dining out complicated). The food is delicious and the menu is clearly marked for vegetarian and gluten-free options. The 18th St location is pretty noisy, which is understandable on a Saturday evening, but the tables in the downstairs dining area are also very close together, which made it even harder for us to hear each other. Mandu's K St restaurant is a bit more spacious and has a double-door set up to prevent the dining area from being blasted by cold air every time the door opens."

My wife and I have never had a meal we didn't like or inadequate service at Mandu. Overall they have a pretty genuine and unique menu for a restaurant in DC. A great change of pace from anything in the vicinity. We stopped in before seeing a concert this time."

We could chat and joke without worrying about disturbing the people next to us. The food came out promptly and was delicious. And the bill at the end was not outrageous.   • "The food was great, and the waiter even helped me find a nice appetizer/entree combination. Great menu, although there were no gluten-free seafood choices. After I placed my order the service went downhill fast, however. My waiter never checked on me, and he only refilled my iced tea once--when I asked him. My glass was empty most of the meal. He flitted to every table on the floor but mine. I didn't hear from him again until he placed the check on my table and asked how was everything. I said: "I was disappointed that you never checked on me and only refilled my iced tea once when I asked. Did I do or say something that was off-putting?" He apologized and claimed he was just busy. After he gave me the check, he never came back."

Not the best bibimbap ever, but good, and I appreciated the hot stone bowl option. Also, the happy hour deal hear is a must - cannot beat it, and the mango sojoutini is delicious. Seriously one of the best happy hour priced drinks you'll find."
