A word from Mandolin
Mandolin is a breath of fresh air to the Raleigh dining scene, combining a casual atmosphere with fresh, contemporary, Southern fare. Mandolin uses the highest quality local ingredients to create seasonal menus that resonate with foodies and casual diners, alike. We share our food in a relaxed, cozy atmosphere that replaces the stuffiness of fine-dining with Southern charm. The menu and ambiance reflect the character of Raleigh itself- a blend of rustic and refined, contemporary and traditional, rural and metropolitan. Mandolin, like the City of Oaks, is Southern at its roots, but draws influences from around the world. We love our new home in Hayes Barton, just a stone's throw from Five Points, on the corner of Oberlin and Fairview. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "When I moved to Raleigh from NYC, one of my biggest fears was that I wouldn't be able to find good restaurants. I've been pleasantly surprised all around, but most certainly so by Mandolin. The farm-fresh ingredients play a starring role in every inventive, well-constructed dish. Even southern classics like chicken and waffles feel new again. I'd describe the atmosphere as "relaxed elegance." The wait staff is helpful, well-informed, and passionate about food. And the wine list and bar also deserve a shout-out - hands down, some of the best cocktails around. If you haven't been, GO! You will not be disappointed. "

  • "Having just moved from 2 previous foodie cities, I am biased. This place was good, but didn't blow me away as I was informed it would. I'd go back, but maybe only every 9 months. My triggerfish was great at first, but there was something about the surprisingly strong flavors that made me unable to finish; however, I DID finish all of the seared avocado - yum! I didn't have the duck and dumplings, but the bits I had of it were really good. Our server was attentive in that she came by the table often, but it was to tell us she was going to do things she should have just done or that she'd forgotten to do. In the middle of our meal, one of the other (overzealous?) servers saw our valet ticket and asked if we needed the car brought up... weird."

  • "From start to finish this restaurant has it all! Super food with local sourcing and excellent service. It is great for both a nice evening out or a business gathering."

  • "We went to this restaurant based on reviews. We were disappointed. Decor was nothing to brag about. Ordered Caesar salad and it was more croutons than anything else. Ordered the Low Country Boil and found the portion lacking. Alcoholic drinks were weak. Waiter dropped a knife on my date staining her pants. Bill was very expensive and yet we were still hungry. We will not be back."

  • "I went with a group of 6 for a special occasion, we had only made a reservation for 4 and two more tagged along and they still found room for us. The staff we interacted with were very friendly, yet professional. The environment is outstanding, I love the decorations and use of space. However, the food was lackluster. Listed as gluten-free friendly on various ratings websites, I was excited when I viewed their menu online, which changes daily. Most options seemed to be gluten free, so I did not call to ask about the menu. Unfortunately, many dishes that could have been gluten free very simply, were not. For the price, I was very disappointed with my options. I would be willing to give Mandolin one more chance."

  • "Sean does an amazing job sourcing quality, local ingredients and creating inventive dishes that honor local influences. Mandolin is by far one of my favorite restaurants and the place I am most often to take friends, family or out of town guests for a memorable meal."

  • "This was, hands-down, the most enjoyable dining experience that I've ever had in Raleigh. Although Raleigh has standout restaurants (Second Empire, Angus Barn, 18 Seaboard, etc.), the dining scene in the Triangle is at its best with cozy little gems, that are casual and friendly, completely unpretentious, and that focus on really stellar food...a segment more populated by restaurants in Durham and Chapel Hill, I think. Mandolin is just such a place, and I think it rivals spots in Durham (Watts Grocery, Nana's) and Chapel Hill (Lantern, Crook's) that have been creating the neighborhood gem experience for many years. Highly recommend the pork chop, sea bass (in lieu of triggerfish) and the beet fettucine. Simply delish!"

  • "I was expecting simpler country food and this restaurant is more sophisticated that that. Unfortunately, what I was expecting was what I was hoping for. The restaurant is beautiful inside and more romantic than most restaurants. In the summer, it will be great to eat outside."

  • "A very friendly, yet professional staff, and the food was excellent! We were in on a Wednesday evening, and there was good crowd. There appeared to be a larger group in a room booked for that purpose, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Our waitress was very helpful and we had a great dialog with her throughout the evening. Wish we had discovered this place sooner!"

  • "Foie gras, oysters mandolin, and duck & dumplings were consistently good. Tomato bisque was good but not superb. With the exception of the ginger ice cream, the sunflower dessert was mediocre."

  • "We booked an early reservation so that we could meet friends for a movie at Rialto. Our server made sure that we had our check in time to make the 7pm movie start. We enjoyed everything about this experience: the friendly service, the good food, and the ambiance. Next time we come, we'll sit on the livelier side of the restaurant, or in the bar area. We will definitely be back, if only to try more cocktails and bar food!"

  • "Great food- fresh and local ingredients. Everything is made on sure. The scallop appetizer was amazing!!"

  • "Mandolin is a charming establishment with beautiful decor, outstanding ambiance, an extremely cordial hostess, friendly and attentive service, and a noise level (on a week night) conducive to easy conversation. The evening started well with a delicious soup (lemon grass and carrot) and an imaginatively created salad. Unfortunately, our entrees (chicken & dumplings and chicken & waffles) did not live up to the standards set by the rest of the restaurant, as they were simply average fare. We could not find any other entrees that interested us on the rather limited menu. Although delicious, their signature cocktails were expensive. Mandolin's policy of using local farmers to supply ingredients is admirable, but their menu needs a make-over."

  • "We ate here for brunch this past Sunday. While the food overall was tasty, my skillet dish has undercooked eggs, and soggy bacon. Others ate the table has better food experiences, but no one was impressed with the potatoes. We had a 10:30 reservation, got seated almost immediately and have our order. The problem was that our food then took 45 minutes to get to our table. Every other table that sat down with us had already left. No apologies from the restaurant. So, I guess they thought it was fine. As a result, I will not be going back."

  • "Love the idea of locally-sourced ingredients. Awesome collard greens and cornbread! Foie gras, scallops, fried oysters, chicken & waffles, duck & dumplings were excellent. Server Hank was friendly and attentive."

  • "Had wanted to try Mandolin for over a year, finally made it here and it actually still exceeded expectations. My companion and I spent a long time trying to figure out what we didn't want on the menu and that was before we heard the specials. The deal was sealed when a neighboring table was served! Great wine and cocktails, excellent service, comfortable setting and quite possibly the best service in Raleigh. Can't wait to go again."

  • "This is the second time we have been here. Both times the food and service have been excellent. This was an early reservation but when told we had a seven o'clock movie they moved our order right along without making us feel rushed. I would definitely recommend to others."

  • "Excellent food. All locally grown. Ugly, rainy night so I chose the chicken and dumplings. Perfect choice and paired with a Cabernet. Great evening. Thank you!"

  • "The food and service were wonderful. Our only issue was one that no one has control over -- there was a party of six right behind our party of four and we could hardly talk for their loud talking and laughing. I'm glad they had such a good time, but it was problematic for us."

  • "Such a charming place, we had to wait an extra 30 mins for our table, but we had a few drinks at the bar and the service was very accommodating. They ran out of the cheapest most delicious drink on the cocktail menu, but subbed in a different one for the lower price. The food came out hot and delicious, my (chicken and dumplings) vegetables were a little under cooked for my preference, but still very tasty. The appetizers were out of this world, and the menu was very southern modern. It didn't feel like we were in raleigh! We celebrated my bf birthday, and they checked my open table notes of providing a candle to blow out without me having to mention it to them.. Also they comped the birthday dessert. Great find!!"

  • "We have been here twice. The first time was excellent, an absolutely perfect dinner. We returned about 6 weeks later and it was a totally different experience. A piece of advice: never, ever order the carrot cake. My husband said is was the worst dessert he had ever had, and he'll typically eat anything."

  • "Mandolins is a good restaurant. Great wine list and some of the food is very good. With that said they try too hard to be unique. The carrot cake is just strange, the Down East Boil was over powered by bell peppers. If you like interesting complicated food than this place will be very appealing to you, If you want simple more traditional food Mandolins comes off as trying too hard to be special."

  • "Staff is super friendly, efficient. Food was great - we had Oysters Mandolin, Duck and Dumplings, and Chicken and Waffles. Quality to Portion Size to Pricing ratio was excellent. Food was not overly heavy, just perfectly rich enough to be satisfying. Will definitely be going back."

  • "After many years I finally made it to Mandolin. Now I am sad at all the missed opportunities to enjoy this gem. Waitstaff were suberb: helpful, attentive, knowledgable yet unobtrusive . Food was fantastic and I loved the intimate nature."

  • "My girlfriend and I had brunch here last weekend, and we really enjoyed ourselves. We were greeted very warmly by the host, and our server was engaging and friendly. Our drinks never fell below halfway (coffee and waters). The food was very good but not the best I've had in Raleigh; specifically the grits were rather bland. On the other hand the pork gravy was possibly the best gravy I've ever tasted. It came as a side for the biscuits, but I ended up eating it straight out of the bowl by itself. Unbelievably good! Again, we had a great time and were impressed by the atmosphere and service. Will definitely give lunch or dinner a try!"

  • "Mandolin is very good restaurant featuring 'southern/N. Carolina' dishes. The service was somewhat spotty and our waiter and others had to be reminded more than once that essential items were missing. But a good experience overall."

  • "The interior is aesthetically pleasing in a modern design. Comfortable. The menu is thoughtful and interesting. There are a lot of dishes that are "ooh, that's a little different." The food was very good, but not "knock your socks off great." It was very nice that all the food is locally sourced. The prices were a little high, but I don't mind paying a little more for an local place that really seems to care about where the food comes from and what goes on the plate. Overall, its something different and a good place to go once in a while, but not frequently."

  • "Food was great, service was great, but the restaurant is just too noisy to have a relaxing meal. I appreciate the energy of the place, and love that it was so busy, but I think they could bring someone in to dampen the noise and turn a very good experience into a great one."

  • ""Texas Road House , peanut on the floor" whipped honey butter for the masses served with bread, Seriously? Is that the best you could come up with? Took so long for waitress to come back to get my drink order I was 30 seconds away from getting up and going to the bar. Food was not as good as the reviews. In sum, 2 star food with 2 star truck stop service saved by nice ambience = 3 star overall"

  • "We had a reservation but still had to wait for a table. We watched the host and servers slowly go about their business without any urgency. Bloody mary was just ok. Country ham benedict had bread that could not be cut. Other diners liked their skillet breakfasts. Service was great. Just needs to step it up to be good."

  • "Our first time at Mandolin for brunch and it was a very pleasant experience. Our service was great and the food had an upscale southern flare that made it special. Homemade biscuits and apple butter with fresh squeezed orange juice topped it off."
