A word from Mandolin
Mandolin is a breath of fresh air to the Raleigh dining scene, combining a casual atmosphere with fresh, contemporary, Southern fare. Mandolin uses the highest quality local ingredients to create seasonal menus that resonate with foodies and casual diners, alike. We share our food in a relaxed, cozy atmosphere that replaces the stuffiness of fine-dining with Southern charm. The menu and ambiance reflect the character of Raleigh itself- a blend of rustic and refined, contemporary and traditional, rural and metropolitan. Mandolin, like the City of Oaks, is Southern at its roots, but draws influences from around the world. We love our new home in Hayes Barton, just a stone's throw from Five Points, on the corner of Oberlin and Fairview. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "One of my favorite places. The food is amazing I have had dinner and brunch here. I would strongly recommend Mandolin to anyone looking to enjoy local flavors."

  • "Great local food and wonderful service. They have all fresh ingredients and buy local whenvever possible so their menu fluctuates with the seasons."

  • "We absolutely love this restaurant. Chef Fowler, Lizzie & the whole team take such wonderful care of us every time we come in. This particular occasion was in celebration of my parents 42nd anniversary. Our server, Christian, was excellently thoughtful, warm and gracious. The menu & food were, as always, impeccable - the cheese plate was heavenly, and my father's dream of trying 'chicken & waffles' was an amazing first experience. My mother and I ate a bit lighter after our cheese & starter courses and had the vegetarian eggplant entrée that was delicious. My husband ordered the tilefish that was some of the best I had ever tasted. Thank you so much for a beautiful, wonderful evening."

  • "Excellent meal and atmosphere; service top notch but unobstrusive"

  • "I was very excited to dine at Mandolin but was disappointed in the food. One friend had an appetizer with absolutely no seasoning - very bland. Another had the chicken and waffles and the waffles were burned, could not believe that they were even brought to the table that way. Scallops were way over seasoned and the panzanella salad was more like a salad with really big croutons as opposed to a true panzanella. The peach salad was fantastic as was the sardine and watermelon appetizer and tile fish entrée."

  • "Sunday evening I introduced two young friends to Mandolin. WIN-WIN. The food was excellent, the quantities enormous and the service very attentive. The only flaw was trying to park. A mere inconvenience in a welter of success."

  • "I can't say enough good things!! This was our first visit and I'm sorry we waited so long to try this amazing place. My hubby is super picky, so getting him to try new places is tough. Both of us were just blown away with the entire experience. The food was incredible, fresh, and so uniquely prepared. Presentation was beautiful and the service was incredible. Thanks Kathy!!! If you haven't been, make it a priority. You won't regret it!!"

  • "We went on a recent Sunday and thought the food, service, and overall experience were very good. We did think the selections were a little limited, but it was brunch. Our 11 year old was fine with the omelet and would have also been ok with the country breakfast. The grits/blackeyed pea/ roasted pepper/bacon skillet was pretty good but the peas could've used a little more cooking. And a misunderstanding caused them to give us an incorrect type of egg and despite our insistence they brought the correct egg- great job Mandolin! We will definitely give Mandolin a try for dinner!"

  • "This was a first visit, and I brought clients, co-workers and spouses, making me somewhat apprehensive - took a bit of a leap of faith based on other reviews and am very glad I did. Monday evening had few patrons, so ambient noise was low. Food and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, were outstanding, beef dishes being stars but all items ordered were well-received. Service was attentive and friendly. One of the local guests has very high standards, and paid a high compliment when he said he would return; there are few restaurants in the Triangle that fall in that bucket for him."

  • "Very nice clean atmosphere . Friendly staff and very accommodating. Freshest of food that was as appealing to the eye as the palate."

  • "Our waiter was perfect in every way. He was friendly yet professional. Polite, timely, and new the menu well."

  • "My wife and daughter took me to Mandolin's for Father's Day Brunch. Everything was just really great from food, service, atmosphere... My wife and I were there for Valentine's Day and had a great time then also. So, I would definitely recommend this place."

  • "Food is interesting and eclectic; may not be for reserved or less adventurous eaters, especially those who don't care for pickled or brined foods. Wine list is too extensive to take in and sort through so many unfamiliar names in a hurried atmosphere. Noise level makes it impossible to have a quiet conversation while dining. The hot Valrhona soufflé for dessert was the highlight of the meal. It was perfection!"

  • "We enjoyed our first time to Mandolin, but it was not what we had hoped. Two aspects of service detracted. The waitress took our order and said the bread would be brought to us. We watched as other tables were served, but not ours until we asked for it some ways into the meal. And when we were eating our dessert, a young man on the wait staff whose only role seemed to be to refill our water glasses came over and instructed my husband on how to eat his cheesecake! Really?! We thought the food was good, but somewhat uneven. The pork chop great, the veal loin fairly tasteless and just salty. As others have said, the noise reverberating off the walls made it difficult to hear once the place filled up."

  • "Quite simply if not THE best definitely one of the best dinners we've had. I'm giving the service 3 stars only because it took a while for our dinners to come out after our appetizers & salad. There was a big dinner party whose order apparently went ahead of ours. If not for that I would have given it 5 stars all around."

  • "Looked for a casual setting with an interesting menu and found Mandolin. It exceeded my expectations. Reasonable cost. The beer menu was incredible and my Stout was delicious. My meal was full of complementary flavors and just the right size. Dessert did not disappoint. My visitors from Columbia were very pleased. The service was attentive, efficient and friendly. Looking forward to another opportunity to impress my guests at Mandolin."

  • "Every. Last. Crumb. There was nothing left on any of our plates. Portion sizes are great and even when I ate everything the fact that the food is as fresh as it can be means that there's no unpleasantly full feeling afterwards. The husband and wife duo who started this place have outdone themselves."

  • "We took our son and his wife to brunch while they were in town from Pittsburgh. My son loved the entire experience. The ambiance, the food & the service were great."

  • "Very good food for most. Only the person who ordered the ribeye special said it lacked seasoning. My NC shrimp were wonderful, chicken and waffles good as well as the pork chop. "

  • "We looked forward to trying Mandolin. The food was interesting and well done. However the noise was terrible as sounds bounced off the walls. We should have asked to dine outside, as we saw others get up and leave for an outside table. The drinks (mixed drinks, coffee etc) were over priced and the dessert was pricey for the small size (deconstructed presentation). I hope the owners address some of these issues , as we think it would be a great place to bring friends."

  • "We enjoyed some of the restaurant's specials, including soft shell crab, as an appetizer. I was pleased with my mahi mahi for my entrée, and my husband enjoyed his flat iron steak. We shared the goat cheese cheesecake for dessert, which was not too sweet and delicious. "
    Dined on 6/5/2014
  • "First time experience - Outstanding menu with very good wine list. Vibrant bar scene. A little noisy with all the hard surfaces encasing the room and bar, but the ambience and room finishes are first rate. Seafood entrees were delightful. "

  • "We loved the decor of the restaurant, great vibe. They have a great cocktail list. The servers are very helpful and their to meet your needs. The food was good, but it was not worth the cost. I MUCH prefer Stanbury for the same price. I will say that if we had stopped after the salad course this would be 5 STARS! We had the Soft Shell Crab to start and it was so wonderful. The Ramp Tarter Sauce was so good and different. The crust on the Soft Shell Crab was so flavorful and crispy. Great dish. We then moved to the Duck Salad and I was in heaven. Seasoned perfectly. It was the entrees that let us down. We had the hanger steak and veal dishes. Both were lacking in something, just ok dishes. The staff is great!"

  • "Barbara and I have a standing date on Friday nights for all of our 39 years together. Additionally, Barbara is generally regarded as a fine chef by our friends and certainly by me. We have lived in Atlanta for 4 years, Chicago for 21 years and Raleigh for 14 years and have a select list of fine restaurants from those cities. Mandolin is on that short list nationally for us. "

  • "This place is SO good. I saw that they had ramps on Twitter and I had to go. My mom and I both enjoyed our meals immensely - "Grilled Heritage Farm Pork Chop" and "Chicken and Dumplings". I didn't get it this time, but I HIGHLY recommend the "Hot Valrhona Chocolate Soufflé", just make sure you realize it takes about 15 minutes."

  • "Everything was good but could have been better. My wife and I had the Vichyssoise. While the presentation was great, we both thought the dish was missing something. Maybe salt. My wife had the shrimp and thought it was very good. Maybe a little too much rice. I had the Chicken Dumpling. I must not have read the description as it probably should have been named a deconstructed chicken pot pie. They gave me a spoon but as the dish was so dry I didn't need it. The chicken and most of the vegetables were very good. I'm not a big fan of rutabaga but love Brussels sprouts. The Brussels sprouts seemed over cooked and there was an odd flavor that dominated the dish. Could have been the rutabaga. We'll give it another try. "

  • "Lovely anniversary dinner -- great food and cozy atmosphere. It was a bit slow as it was Memorial Day so the noise level was not a factor. I have been there on a busy weekend evening and it can be quite loud and perhaps difficult for conversation. That being said, even though the restaurant was not close to being fully booked, the service was a bit inattentive at times."

  • "This was our first visit to Mandolin and it will not be the last. The food was amazing! I would actually rate it in the top 5 meals that I have ever had at a restaurant. Service was fantastic too. It was pricey, but it should be. Worth it! Can't wait to go back. "

  • "Definitely well run and well operate with a lean toward southern cuisine (chicken and waffles, chicken and dumpling) but also fresh fish and meat options. Desserts are creative, as well as the seasonal bar offerings. Menu changes frequently to match farm-table opportunities. Higher end from cost perspective for Raleigh but worth the few extra in our view. "

  • "Had a wonderful time celebrating a wedding anniversary. The food was excellent! Open area, yet quiet enough to enjoy my own conversation without enjoying my neighbor's. The veal was very tender, even though I have to eat it well-done. Large enough portions and great taste, so didn't mind the prices at all."

  • "I am so glad I found Mandolin restaurant- our foursome thoroughly enjoyed the experience- it had an elegant, friendly neighborhood feel when we entered and I loved our table, as the dining room layout has just enough of the kitchen (and it's activities) in view. Our waiter, Hank, was very personable and knowledgeable. We sampled some of the signature drinks and found them as you would hope- an innovative mix of herbs, spices, fruit and more! after interesting salads (a bread salad with house pickles and fresh local cheeses was our favorite) and the tuna tartar ( a shareable portion with great presentation) we settled in to our main courses- all were wonderful- especially the pork chop- we'll be back!"

  • "Food was great; Service was fantastic and they gave us a free dessert because they knew it was our anniversary! WE had the chocolate souffle...WOW! So good! Great atmosphere and they seem to have a more casual dining room and more romantic to suit both types of outings."

  • "We found Mandolin through an article on best restaurants in Raleigh and decided to have our 17th anniversary dinner there. It was wonderful on all levels. Even my phone conversation to adjust our reservation time was fun -- the host was friendly and welcoming. You'll love the neighborhood, the decor, the service and the food. Seriously, we are picky and we were blown away. They are doing everything right. The waiter even noticed I was drinking sweet tea instead of wine or beer, etc and volunteer a free dessert instead of the complimentary glass of champagne they normal offer for anniversaries. We're taking a bunch of friends back soon!"

  • "Lots of prestige riding on this evening. I had convinced a friend from Chapel Hill to travel to Raleigh for her birthday dinner surprise. Based on two previous experiences and proximity to home I went with Mandolin. Greeting warmly and asked if this was a special occasion (yes). Given a helpful explanation of the apertifs (two please) Guided skillfully through menu selections. (soup, trout, and shrimp) The serving tempo was smooth. The food top drawer. Then the quiet delivery of a complimentary dessert. ('On the lady's special occasion) Game, set, match for us. Mandolin is my new best friend in the neighborhood."

  • "Chef Sean could easily be an Iron Chef winner. I am not sure what dish is best but have enjoyed the trigger fish. The fried chicken is easily the best I have ever had (sorry grandma!). This is a regular stop for me. "
