A word from Mamma Melina
The Seattle Times, August 26th 2010: So thoroughly have the three Varchetta brothers re-imagined the relocated Mamma Melina their own mother would hardly recognize the place even though that's her name above the door.
The new Mamma Melina, occupying the south end of the Corydon Apartments near University Village, has more in common with the Varchetta's stylish Barolo downtown.
On a summer day you'd think it was Rodeo Drive and not the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs alongside the broad front patio. Amid shallow pools holding silver globes that glint in the sun, beautiful people in oversized sunglasses sip wine on thickly cushioned sofas or sup on house-made pasta under canvas umbrellas at white-clothed tables.Price points are moderate and the cooking is assured.

We had made 2:30pm reservations for four. While waiting a half hour for one couple, the waiters generously attended the other couple. Our orders were promptly attended and the food was lovely. This is a wonderful find for us, as many of the other popular restaurants are noisy, not particularly attentive and seem to serve only the noisy "foodies" at the bar. Though far from "stuffy", this restaurant truly values not only the food they serve, but ambiance and service.

We appreciated that service was excellent with complementary birthday cake. Only thing is because I have been a long time customer since you were at 50th, I noticed one of my favorite pasta dis was gone. Different seafood with tomato sauce pasta was my favorite. I hope you get that dish back on the menu. So I ordered lobster pasta. Lobster was good but the pasta was a little too soft for me. I like more of the al dente. I love your place and please stay in business.

Our server seemed wholly disinterested in us, and didn't seem to understand vegan diet restrictions (which is surprising in Seattle). We also made the reservation noting that we were celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary, but no one mentioned it. I would expect at least a "thank you for choosing to celebrate your special occasion with us".

It was my moms first visit to Seattle and I wanted to take her to a highly recommended restaurant. Seriously, my co workers and friends have raved about this place, so I was excited to try it out. There's no doubt that this restaurant is beautiful. The good was delicious (and quick?!?! Which is good!) what was so seriously disappointing was the fact that our server just kind of ditched us. He never checked in about how the food was, we ran out of water, and we would have loved to order more drinks. A very disappointing end to a great night.

It may have been the holiday - we went on Labor Day. Perhaps the chef(s) were in vacation. Our food was not well prepared as it usually is at this restaurant. I opted for salmon with shrimp. It was so dry and over cooked I could not eat it. The pasta and pizza at our table was also underwhelming. Our favorite dish was the gnocchi. Wine was great and the service was outstanding. We'll be back eventually because our prior visits have all been very good.

So disappointing. We had 8 o'clock reservations. The variety on the menus had several interesting choices. We were brought a plate of bread and olive oil vinegar dip. There was a standard menu and page of specials. The server rushed over and asked for our drink order. Then she said she was ready to take our dinner order. No explanation of specials. No pleasantries. We had a friendlier server at IHOP! She rushed off. We waited. No offer of more bread or anything. My husband's salmon was barely cooked. My ravioli was good and hot. Small portions. No effort to dress it up. Although on a busy corner it was quiet. We felt like we were being pushed to get in and out. Entire time from entering the restaurant to exiting was 45 minutes.

I ordered the lasagnette and was fairly disappointed. The pasta itself was very fresh and light, with great flavor, but the sauce was a bit bland. This made the dish ordinary. The meat was also sparse. I was left longing for more meat. The others I was with wondered if the meat was blended into the sauce? Otherwise, their Caesar salad was amazing! I could tell the dressing was freshly made. Also, the table bread was very good. My only complaint with service was I was in the middle of eating my bread and the waitress came and took the oil/balsamic bowl right as I was about to dip my bread into it. The whole table saw what happened and laughed as my face fell. I would go again, but probably just to give them another shot. Great atmosphere!

I have returned here many times. Not only is the Happy Hour excellent with generous appetizers, I keep finding gems on the regular menu. Such was the case Saturday night when I tried veal and mushrooms which I had missed on previous visits. The veal was tender, not tough, and the mushrooms were an excellent accompaniment.

Consistently good quality italien food, great service and friendly staff; we keep on coming back. The whole family (17 - 86 years of age) loves Mama Melina's und it has become a staple for birthday celebrations. The restaurant is run well, always looks pristine and has a good atmosphere. On warm days the outdoor seating is pleasant despite being close to main street traffic light - it makes for a somewhat metropolitan vibe. The menu offers enough choices and does not change often but specials are available. I love the gluten free pasta option. In the evening reservations are recommended.

My family comes to this restaurant regularly, but tonight disappointed. The restaurant was its regular level of busy but our service was lackluster. Our server was not attentive and our food took at least 45 minutes to come to the table. I ordered dessert but never got it. We didn't get refills. She seemed a little scattered. It was very disappointing. We will go again, but we are hopeful it is back to its usual good service.

It has that casual fanciness to it. You can wear flip flops, but you'll have linen napkins and tablecloths. The food has a modern presentation (the usual square plates, creatively placed food), but compared to other nearby Italian restaurants like Salvatore's, the food was just average. My wife ordered a steak that was cooked as specified, but the sauce on it was not tasty at all. I have a pretty lenient palette, and it just didn't taste good. That said, it has a nice patio to dine outside, and the inside part of the restaurant is open air; so that's pretty nice. The bread and dipping sauce was pretty tasty as well.

We loved Mamma Melina when our waiters were opera singers and this is the first time at the new location. The food was excellent! I miss the old location however the new location has the benefit of parking ease and convenience. Every dish was better than we remembered it. This restaurant deserves 5 stars! The front host was exceptionally accommodating....he held onto our rather large gift until we needed it. I was delighted with the service. Benjamin was our waiter and he was terrific!

We went for my daughters birthday because we have been several times in the past. The corner bright restaurant has a great vibe, it's pretty inside and out. They have great private dining in the back. However, the food and service this time was off and pretty awful. We are easy not high maintenance but the food was really not good. My daughters pasta with clams was really "fishy", my fish was SO buttery and fried and my sons steak was basically killed and pretty tough. The worst thing is the chairs. They hit the back of your knee! Ouch after awhile. The waitress seemed irritated the whole night when we asked for things. I'm wishing we went to Joeys Kitchen in the village. The food is awesome and vibe better. Plus Molly moons next door!

We had a party of 6 and were seated right away in a nice room. I like Mamma Melina for it's atmosphere and service, but the food is middle of the road Italian. Good portion sizes, but just not a whole lot of flair. My favorite part of the meal was the beet salad. Our waiter was very good and attentive, the prices were reasonable, but we gave the entrees a "good" rating overall for a reason.

We have been coming here for the past three years on and off. The two brothers who own this place are really great people and we want to see them be successful. However, we find the food and service is inconsistent. In the last two weeks, we have come here twice. The first visit was great, good food and service. The second trip, both food and service were not on par. When the deck is open, the restaurant almost doubles it's capacity and it seems the food and service declines most often than not. Our ticket for two people well is above average, there's too many other choices in Seattle to make this a regular spot for us. We have a soft spot for this place and do return eventually in hopes that things have changed for the better.

We have been here 3 Times and enjoyed great Italian food each time. Delicius appetizers, salads and entrees . Nice wine list. My daughter loves this place. Each time we have come there have been what appear to be wedding showers, birthdays and other special occasions. They are seated in large alcoves in the back and they handle groups well. It seemed the bar was hopping with young professionals and students this last time. This seems to be a very popular neighborhood choice for this age group. Only negative comment is that the noise level is high. There are no fabric surfaces except for some filmy curtains in the back to absorb sound, and it is difficult to hear conversation. The food is delicious and wait staff very attentive.

Came for Mother's Day "brunch". Most dishes were not brunch items. From the limited options we ended up ordering French toast which was delicious and the crazy eggs (can't remember Italian name for the dish) which was awful. Two runny eggs in a bowl of sauce. The sauce was tasty but wasn't sure how I was supposed to eat it. The meal ran through the fork, there was no bread or pasta served with it and a spoon was not provided. The service was pretty bad as well. The waitress seemed bored and the guy at the door barely nodded when we arrived or left. The place was empty for a traditionally busy brunch day... guess I know why. Too bad. I have enjoyed dinner here and will be back but definitely not for any special brunch occasions.
