A word from Mamma Melina
The Seattle Times, August 26th 2010: So thoroughly have the three Varchetta brothers re-imagined the relocated Mamma Melina their own mother would hardly recognize the place even though that's her name above the door.
The new Mamma Melina, occupying the south end of the Corydon Apartments near University Village, has more in common with the Varchetta's stylish Barolo downtown.
On a summer day you'd think it was Rodeo Drive and not the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs alongside the broad front patio. Amid shallow pools holding silver globes that glint in the sun, beautiful people in oversized sunglasses sip wine on thickly cushioned sofas or sup on house-made pasta under canvas umbrellas at white-clothed tables.Price points are moderate and the cooking is assured.

Diner Reviews
  • "Service was excellent, great ambiance and the food was delicious. "

  • "I would like to go there once a week if I lived closer. Music was a little loud, but when we made the suggestion, manager lowered it a bit for us at once."

  • "Went for the Seattle Restaurant Week $28 3-course meal. Had salmone (was imaginative and delicious), halibut (generous portion with yummy potatoes) and olive oil cake with basil gelato (both good, but not together). Attentive service, especially with packed house. Kind of noisy when crowded, but conversation still manageable. Would definitely return."

  • "Just another place filled with the college crowd. Food is average."

  • "One of the best and friendliest places to enjoy great Italian foods in Seattle. El dente pasta. Great values!"

  • "Our first time here and we chose it based on Open Table reviews. We will come back! Our dinner was excellent - a light dinner of an appetizer, salads and a pizza. All prepared just right. The service was excellent. An upbeat atmosphere that was not too loud or distracting with all ages. We are looking forward to coming back for another visit and try their special (which looked excellent). Not your typical "spaghetti" place. Rather, a place for a fine meal. We recommend Mamma Melina's!"

  • "We are never disappointed - service, food, décor absolutely fantastic!"

  • "Love the white tablecloth and elegant crystal chandeliers with the casual feel of the concrete floor Love the high ceilings, all the windows, for great daytime ambience, as well as evening. Food always delicious bread is so soft and fresh. The potato gnocci are like soft pillows. The flatiron steak with the creamy polenta outstanding! We celebrated a birthday at lunch and they didn't skip a beat with the after lunch tiramisu birthday dessert! The service staff are very professional, and busy as they have lots of tables. The restaurant is always full when I am there."

  • "We visited Mama Melina's for the first time for lunch on Saturday, March 22. The decor is gorgeous, the food and its presentation was excellent. Our server was efficient, but not at all engaging. She seemed a little upset about being there. That happens and it won't cause us to not return. Our only complaint was the music. It was far too loud. Counting us, there were only 2 other tables of diners, so it should have been turned way down. In retrospect we should have said something to our server, but it wasn't that kind of relationship if you get my jist."

  • "The cauliflower soup was absolutely divine. The cannelloni superb, the pizzas delicious, and the deserts just way too tempting. I love this restaurant and have heard that it is hard to get a seat once the fine weather sets in and the patio crowd shows up. Try it for lunch instead. Their brunches are a great value and the pace is less hectic. One thing I didn't like was the décor. It is stark modernist white with purple hints and metal work, and seems a bit too formal for the cliental, the food, and the vibe of the neighbourhood. The bathrooms are great, but you could dress down the dining area a bit, guys. Your chef doesn't really need the uber-chic attitude to draw us in."

  • "Nice atmosphere, friendly servers, food portions were pretty small for the price. Actually food was very good. Not a good place for small children."

  • "Amazing menu for the Dine Around Seattle Lunch. My date and I enjoyed: appetizer: a coppo and cheese plate, spinach salad entree: grilled chicken, home baked pizza dessert: cannoli and tiramisu The cannoli was absolutely to die for and I will definitely be coming back for it."

  • "House-made pasta that is light and fresh, not over-sauced; and a really well-done traditional caesar salad. All that in a pleasant ambiance, made slightly remarkable by paintings on the ceiling."

  • "My food was great and it came very fast. I look forward to returning since there was so many things I would like to try."

  • "I went for Dine around Seattle lunch menu, and ordered "Piatto misto", "Spaghetti alle cozze e pachini" and "Tiramisu". The spaghetti is al dente and everything is cook at the right level. The shortcomings is nothing is really "wow" that I would come back anytime soon, but definitely will visit again due to its proximity to my work place."

  • "Felt like our server was doing us a favor. Generally, the service is much better, but this individual clearly needs to move on in her life."

  • "Each time I've been here the food has been delicious. The portion size is correct not typical oversized as in too many restaurants. This visit we shared appetizers: the cheese platter & escargots. The cheeses were just the right temperature for full flavor; the escargots tender. For my main dish, I had the gnocchi....some of the best in town !! Desserts we shared tiramisu which was light & tasty and the olive oil cake which had a hit of orange zest. My apologies, I can not comment on their wine list. I'm a sparling water person."

  • "Dined here during the fixed price special and had a wonderful meal. Invited another couple and all enjoyed their dinner. Steaks cooked perfectly, sauce complimentary not overwhelming, appetizers well balanced and desserts tasty (though basil gelato rather odd). Will visit again since it is a handy neighborhood location."

  • "Good food. It was Valentines so the waiter had too many tables to wait on. Food was cool in temperature. Recommendations and specials for that night were terriffic. Waited about 1/2 hr or longer for the food, only to get it "cool" in temperature. A little disappointing."

  • "Antipasti Misto was a great starter, over cocktails and wine or just something sparkling. Salad selections were creative. Romaine or beet, sure. Butter lettuce, that's a little different. Rocket, or rucola, a definite try. Each pairs with its unique blends of garnish and dressing, a great prelude to the entrees. Paste, firm and easy to the bite, well sauced. Lamk shank, tender and easy to the fork, well seasoned."

  • "Good overall except the sirloin steak was over cooked and dry, server did not ask about the degree of doneness."

  • "Loved the cauliflower bisque. Don't recommend the canneloni."

  • "I am a very picky eater. Probably because my father had a restaurant and was an excellent cook so I have been spoiled. The caesar salad is the best I have ever had. The clam linquini was excellent. My husbands sea bass was excellent as well. Around 80 percent of restaurants I have not been happy with. But your food was GREAT and will definately ba back. Thanks for making our Valentines Day dinner special with your excellent food."

  • "This restaurant was overall amazing. From the delicious food to the great service, Mamma Melina is definitely a new favorite. I strongly recommend dining here!"

  • "I had asked for a quiet place in the restaurant if possible - they had a private room waiting for us - we really appreciated that"

  • "My wife and I went here for Valentine's day and had a wonderful meal with great service. Will definitely be back again."

  • "This food by far, is the best Italian food I have ever tasted! Cooked to perfection and with the finest ingredients. Defiantly would recommend this for anyone going out on a first date due to the outstanding environment. This would be a 5 of 5 if only the service would be a little more on que."

  • "Scheduled a Sunday reservation and when we got to the restaurant our table was available within a few minutes of arriving (a little earlier than our reservation time). Mamma Melina's offers a free appetizer to customers who also happen to be staying at the Silver Cloud Hotel. The appetizer was provided for each individual. Very well done and appreciated. There were four of us in the party and we all enjoyed the atmosphere and food. We have been going to Mama's for years and it has always been a great experience. Thanks"

  • "On our last visit I had Steelhead which was outstanding. On a prior visit my wife had swordfish which was perfect . Our server said she watched the chef take a beautiful piece of fresh fish and cut the steaks. That same evening I had the steak special of a thick cut sirloin. It was so tender you would think it was a filet minion !"

  • "I took a close friend to Mamma Melina to celebrate her birthday. The restaurant didn't have a booth but was able to give us a quiet table that was not too close to other tables. The server was friendly and attentive, and the lasagne and mushroom ravioli were pretty good. We also enjoyed the butter lettuce salad and cheesecake for dessert. All in all, we had a really nice meal and evening."

  • "Loved the atmosphere with dim lights and candles at each table. I had the ravioli, which was only okay. My husband had the spaghetti marinara with meat balls and it was excellent. We had the bread pudding for dessert and it was excellent as well. Service was only okay."

  • "We were in a part of the restuarant that was so loud we could not converse. The round room with a round table and heavy drinkers nearby make the evening a bust. We have dined there before without this issue, but we were disappointed by our experience."

  • "Great spot. Had a wonderful meal although the service was a bit slow. We weren't in a hurry so it didn't matter. Would definitely go back."

  • "This was my first time at Mamma Melina's and I held our monthly Ladies Night Out here. Only one of us had been before. We were all pleased with the menu selections as there was really something for everyone. We were a little disappointed that the happy hour was in the bar area but that's not too unusual in many places. Sadly, our waitress went MIA several times throughout the evening so wine glasses would sit empty for far too long. I was told by the one guest who frequents Mamma Melina's that this was unusual so, I would definitely try it again. My food was excellent, the wine too and the company was fabulous! Give it a try!"

  • "It is always so nice there, and the entire staff was so lovely to my parents who we brought there for their 65th Wedding Anniversary! They even gave them a free Tiramisu as a way of acknowledging them. The decor is just amazing, and always great food! Very attentive service without overdoing it. Mille grazie, Mama Melina and Staff"

  • "Met a friend from out of town here. We chose it because it was within walking distance of her hotel. Great servicce, food and wine; the selections were more than adequate. Service was attentive, but not annoying. It was Saturday night but we never felt rushed and in fact ended up sipping coffee and visiting until the restaurant closed. A very nice experience!"

  • "Mama Melina is consistently one of my favorite restaurants to go to, either for lunch or dinner. The waiters and waitresses are ALWAYS on point, and the hosts/hostesses are extremely welcoming as well. Our waitress made sure our waters were filled the entire time and even put our salads on different plates so we could split them more easily. The food is excellent, especially the fettucine bolognese. My friend had a dairy allergy and the waitress had no problem helping her pick out a dish that would be suitable for her. The few times I have been to Mama Melina have always, ALWAYS been a huge treat. Amazing."
