A word from Mamma Melina
The Seattle Times, August 26th 2010: So thoroughly have the three Varchetta brothers re-imagined the relocated Mamma Melina their own mother would hardly recognize the place even though that's her name above the door.
The new Mamma Melina, occupying the south end of the Corydon Apartments near University Village, has more in common with the Varchetta's stylish Barolo downtown.
On a summer day you'd think it was Rodeo Drive and not the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs alongside the broad front patio. Amid shallow pools holding silver globes that glint in the sun, beautiful people in oversized sunglasses sip wine on thickly cushioned sofas or sup on house-made pasta under canvas umbrellas at white-clothed tables.Price points are moderate and the cooking is assured.

Diner Reviews
  • "Have heard great things about the restaurant for years and this was first visit - will definitely be back. Great food, ambience, service!"

  • "My family comes to this restaurant regularly, but tonight disappointed. The restaurant was its regular level of busy but our service was lackluster. Our server was not attentive and our food took at least 45 minutes to come to the table. I ordered dessert but never got it. We didn't get refills. She seemed a little scattered. It was very disappointing. We will go again, but we are hopeful it is back to its usual good service."

  • "What a brilliant place - near bustling UVillage, but not in it. Nice ambience, lovely food, perfect service. Will be back!"

  • "It has that casual fanciness to it. You can wear flip flops, but you'll have linen napkins and tablecloths. The food has a modern presentation (the usual square plates, creatively placed food), but compared to other nearby Italian restaurants like Salvatore's, the food was just average. My wife ordered a steak that was cooked as specified, but the sauce on it was not tasty at all. I have a pretty lenient palette, and it just didn't taste good. That said, it has a nice patio to dine outside, and the inside part of the restaurant is open air; so that's pretty nice. The bread and dipping sauce was pretty tasty as well."

  • "Celebrated my girlfriend's birthday! She was really happy with the food and wine list! Also the service was really good as when I told a waitress that it was my girlfriend's birthday, they brought a very tasty cake with the candle!!! I will definately visit that restaurant again!)"

  • "We loved Mamma Melina when our waiters were opera singers and this is the first time at the new location. The food was excellent! I miss the old location however the new location has the benefit of parking ease and convenience. Every dish was better than we remembered it. This restaurant deserves 5 stars! The front host was exceptionally accommodating....he held onto our rather large gift until we needed it. I was delighted with the service. Benjamin was our waiter and he was terrific!"

  • "one of the most memorable restaurant experiences I have had in the long time. Very impressive that the owners were vey engaged with a fine eye for detail on a busy Friday night. Food and service was exceptional"

  • "We went for my daughters birthday because we have been several times in the past. The corner bright restaurant has a great vibe, it's pretty inside and out. They have great private dining in the back. However, the food and service this time was off and pretty awful. We are easy not high maintenance but the food was really not good. My daughters pasta with clams was really "fishy", my fish was SO buttery and fried and my sons steak was basically killed and pretty tough. The worst thing is the chairs. They hit the back of your knee! Ouch after awhile. The waitress seemed irritated the whole night when we asked for things. I'm wishing we went to Joeys Kitchen in the village. The food is awesome and vibe better. Plus Molly moons next door!"

  • "We had a party of 6 and were seated right away in a nice room. I like Mamma Melina for it's atmosphere and service, but the food is middle of the road Italian. Good portion sizes, but just not a whole lot of flair. My favorite part of the meal was the beet salad. Our waiter was very good and attentive, the prices were reasonable, but we gave the entrees a "good" rating overall for a reason."

  • "We have been coming here for the past three years on and off. The two brothers who own this place are really great people and we want to see them be successful. However, we find the food and service is inconsistent. In the last two weeks, we have come here twice. The first visit was great, good food and service. The second trip, both food and service were not on par. When the deck is open, the restaurant almost doubles it's capacity and it seems the food and service declines most often than not. Our ticket for two people well is above average, there's too many other choices in Seattle to make this a regular spot for us. We have a soft spot for this place and do return eventually in hopes that things have changed for the better. "

  • "I love the pasta, and not complicate tomato soup just delicious. Recommend appetizers. "

  • "Dinners were spectacular, particularly the mezzaluna chef's special. Excellent gin and tonic, superb service by Samantha and entire staff. Thanks for the booth; one diner has hearing issues and another mobility problems. Ambiance sophisticated and serene. Grazie mille."

  • "We have been here 3 Times and enjoyed great Italian food each time. Delicius appetizers, salads and entrees . Nice wine list. My daughter loves this place. Each time we have come there have been what appear to be wedding showers, birthdays and other special occasions. They are seated in large alcoves in the back and they handle groups well. It seemed the bar was hopping with young professionals and students this last time. This seems to be a very popular neighborhood choice for this age group. Only negative comment is that the noise level is high. There are no fabric surfaces except for some filmy curtains in the back to absorb sound, and it is difficult to hear conversation. The food is delicious and wait staff very attentive. "

  • "Antipasto. Scaloppine. Lamb shank. And of course pasta, pasta, pasta. Good choices. Great flavor. I will be back and have already been."

  • "Came for Mother's Day "brunch". Most dishes were not brunch items. From the limited options we ended up ordering French toast which was delicious and the crazy eggs (can't remember Italian name for the dish) which was awful. Two runny eggs in a bowl of sauce. The sauce was tasty but wasn't sure how I was supposed to eat it. The meal ran through the fork, there was no bread or pasta served with it and a spoon was not provided. The service was pretty bad as well. The waitress seemed bored and the guy at the door barely nodded when we arrived or left. The place was empty for a traditionally busy brunch day... guess I know why. Too bad. I have enjoyed dinner here and will be back but definitely not for any special brunch occasions. "

  • "took my wife out for mother's day to mamma melina's. had never been there before but had heard good things that turned out to be true. Food - excellent. Atmosphere - very nice; high ceilings and big wall of floor to ceiling windows letting in lots of day light. Service very good and very prompt - did not leave us waiting for anything yet not pushy as if trying to get our table turned over. Moderately busy for a Saturday evening at 6PM but not overwhelmingly so.... wait staff was relaxed enough to be attentive and on top of things."

  • "This restaurant was a dire disappointment. The food is over priced for what you get and they are trying to present themselves as "fancy fine dining" when actually they are serving you rigatoni out of the box with chicken tenders... I was very underwhelmed and why don't they give you ice in your water and put condiments on the table?"

  • "I returned to Mama Melina's for dinner this past weekend and was pleased with a different menu selection--veal and mushrooms. It was a Friday night and there were several groups so the noise level was a little more intense but we requested a booth and received it so all was well. It's a dependable restaurant for a good Italian meal and appetizers. Wine list is not bad."

  • "We have been dining with this family for over 20 years and following the kids' next gen move to their new location has been fantastic. They are always actively managing the entire operation every night, making sure everyone is taken care of. The staff is well trained and professional and the food consistantly excellent. Wonderful eclectic atmosphere, sophisticated yet casual."

  • "Went for the Seattle Restaurant Week $28 3-course meal. Had salmone (was imaginative and delicious), halibut (generous portion with yummy potatoes) and olive oil cake with basil gelato (both good, but not together). Attentive service, especially with packed house. Kind of noisy when crowded, but conversation still manageable. Would definitely return."

  • "Our first time here and we chose it based on Open Table reviews. We will come back! Our dinner was excellent - a light dinner of an appetizer, salads and a pizza. All prepared just right. The service was excellent. An upbeat atmosphere that was not too loud or distracting with all ages. We are looking forward to coming back for another visit and try their special (which looked excellent). Not your typical "spaghetti" place. Rather, a place for a fine meal. We recommend Mamma Melina's!"

  • "Love the white tablecloth and elegant crystal chandeliers with the casual feel of the concrete floor Love the high ceilings, all the windows, for great daytime ambience, as well as evening. Food always delicious bread is so soft and fresh. The potato gnocci are like soft pillows. The flatiron steak with the creamy polenta outstanding! We celebrated a birthday at lunch and they didn't skip a beat with the after lunch tiramisu birthday dessert! The service staff are very professional, and busy as they have lots of tables. The restaurant is always full when I am there."

  • "We visited Mama Melina's for the first time for lunch on Saturday, March 22. The decor is gorgeous, the food and its presentation was excellent. Our server was efficient, but not at all engaging. She seemed a little upset about being there. That happens and it won't cause us to not return. Our only complaint was the music. It was far too loud. Counting us, there were only 2 other tables of diners, so it should have been turned way down. In retrospect we should have said something to our server, but it wasn't that kind of relationship if you get my jist."

  • "The cauliflower soup was absolutely divine. The cannelloni superb, the pizzas delicious, and the deserts just way too tempting. I love this restaurant and have heard that it is hard to get a seat once the fine weather sets in and the patio crowd shows up. Try it for lunch instead. Their brunches are a great value and the pace is less hectic. One thing I didn't like was the décor. It is stark modernist white with purple hints and metal work, and seems a bit too formal for the cliental, the food, and the vibe of the neighbourhood. The bathrooms are great, but you could dress down the dining area a bit, guys. Your chef doesn't really need the uber-chic attitude to draw us in."

  • "Nice atmosphere, friendly servers, food portions were pretty small for the price. Actually food was very good. Not a good place for small children."

  • "Amazing menu for the Dine Around Seattle Lunch. My date and I enjoyed: appetizer: a coppo and cheese plate, spinach salad entree: grilled chicken, home baked pizza dessert: cannoli and tiramisu The cannoli was absolutely to die for and I will definitely be coming back for it."

  • "House-made pasta that is light and fresh, not over-sauced; and a really well-done traditional caesar salad. All that in a pleasant ambiance, made slightly remarkable by paintings on the ceiling."
