A word from Mamma Melina
The Seattle Times, August 26th 2010: So thoroughly have the three Varchetta brothers re-imagined the relocated Mamma Melina their own mother would hardly recognize the place even though that's her name above the door.
The new Mamma Melina, occupying the south end of the Corydon Apartments near University Village, has more in common with the Varchetta's stylish Barolo downtown.
On a summer day you'd think it was Rodeo Drive and not the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs alongside the broad front patio. Amid shallow pools holding silver globes that glint in the sun, beautiful people in oversized sunglasses sip wine on thickly cushioned sofas or sup on house-made pasta under canvas umbrellas at white-clothed tables.Price points are moderate and the cooking is assured.

My partner and I took advantage of the $33 November special on a Sunday evening for our first visit here. On the 3 course meal, we each had a hit for each course, while the other was generally disappointed, for a total score of only 50%. We also waited quite a while at times to be served or waited on. All in all, a mediocre night out and no compelling reason to return.

We got there just as family time was winding down. If your on a date go to a late dinner here. The food was very good and a a reasonable price. We did have to tell the waitress to slow it down. We felt rushed. Overall a great experience and we will go back.

The food was great! But...the wine service was not acceptable. We ordered a 2007 Napa Valley Cab. We received a 2008 Alexander Valley Cab. Wrong year and different wine region, yet it was the same price. At $140 this is not acceptable. The only excuse provided was that they had switched over to the next years' production. Obviously, that happens but at least immediately update your winelist so customers get what they order.

Went to Mamma Melina twice for restaurant week, once during lunch and the other time during dinner. Usually, it's not worthwhile to go to the same restaurant twice for restaurant week because of the limited options on the menu specific for the week. However, I was not disappointed. The food was delicious, flavorful, well-cooked, and maintained its presentation as well. The service was friendly. During dinner, the music was a bit discordant and more suited for the bar area than the rest of the restaurant. However, the food more than made up for it. I had the flat iron steak, with a prosciutto salad as an appetizer and fruit with cream dessert. Decadent, filling, but completely worthwhile.

My girlfriend and I went here to eat an early dinner before a Huskies game. We splurged on great 50 yard-line tickets, so I wanted to have an affordable meal but not splurge. My girlfriend recommended MM. We walked in and I immediately felt like we were going to spend $200. We sat down, ordered a couple of drinks, which arrived promptly, and let our server Heather guide us through our meal based on her recommendations. And EVERY suggestion she made was perfect for what we wanted. The ambiance was excellent, and I noted couples, groups, families and friends all dining and having a wonderful time. And to top it off, the prices were so affordable. We will be back and this will get into our rotation of favorite haunts. Thank You to the staff!

This is a favorite restaurant of ours. However when we were there to celebrate the birthday of a close friend of ours, the 4 of us were rushed horribly by the waiter. This, even though there were a few empty tables. Service was not as attentive as usual. This particular evening, a Thursday, there were several very noisy larger tables that made our experience a big disappointment. Fortunately the food was the outstanding quality we have come to expect from Mama Melina's. So, we will be back and hope that the service and noise issues are addressed by the management.

The restaurant week menu isn't as good as the regular menu, but the ambience and energy of the restaurant is great. We had made 2:30pm reservations for four. While waiting a half hour for one couple, the waiters generously attended the other couple. Our orders were promptly attended and the food was lovely. This is a wonderful find for us, as many of the other popular restaurants are noisy, not particularly attentive and seem to serve only the noisy "foodies" at the bar. Though far from "stuffy", this restaurant truly values not only the food they serve, but ambiance and service.

We appreciated that service was excellent with complementary birthday cake. Only thing is because I have been a long time customer since you were at 50th, I noticed one of my favorite pasta dis was gone. Different seafood with tomato sauce pasta was my favorite. I hope you get that dish back on the menu. So I ordered lobster pasta. Lobster was good but the pasta was a little too soft for me. I like more of the al dente. I love your place and please stay in business.

Our server seemed wholly disinterested in us, and didn't seem to understand vegan diet restrictions (which is surprising in Seattle). It was my moms first visit to Seattle and I wanted to take her to a highly recommended restaurant. Seriously, my co workers and friends have raved about this place, so I was excited to try it out. There's no doubt that this restaurant is beautiful. The good was delicious (and quick?!?! Which is good!) what was so seriously disappointing was the fact that our server just kind of ditched us. He never checked in about how the food was, we ran out of water, and we would have loved to order more drinks. A very disappointing end to a great night.

It may have been the holiday - we went on Labor Day. Perhaps the chef(s) were in vacation. Our food was not well prepared as it usually is at this restaurant. I opted for salmon with shrimp. It was so dry and over cooked I could not eat it. The pasta and pizza at our table was also underwhelming. Our favorite dish was the gnocchi. Wine was great and the service was outstanding. We'll be back eventually because our prior visits have all been very good.

So disappointing. We had 8 o'clock reservations. The variety on the menus had several interesting choices. We were brought a plate of bread and olive oil vinegar dip. There was a standard menu and page of specials. The server rushed over and asked for our drink order. Then she said she was ready to take our dinner order. No explanation of specials. No pleasantries. We had a friendlier server at IHOP! She rushed off. We waited. No offer of more bread or anything. My husband's salmon was barely cooked. My ravioli was good and hot. Small portions. No effort to dress it up. Although on a busy corner it was quiet. We felt like we were being pushed to get in and out. Entire time from entering the restaurant to exiting was 45 minutes.
