Nice setting in the North End. I've eaten at great Italian restaurants in Boston's North End. Mama Maria's wasn't outstanding. The Bolognese Pasta was described as spicy but it was very plain. The linguini was supposed to be homemade pasta but it didn't taste that fresh. Frutti di Mare Pasta was supposed to have Georgia shrimp, scallops, mussels, countneck clams, poached calamari, and sautéed spinach. It had a lot of clams, no mussels, no scallops, no shrimp and no calamari that I could find. None of it was awful if moderately priced but these were expensive dishes. $28 for a moderate sized plate of linguini with basic sauce. Few wines for < $60.00. Lobster ravioli was ok but $16 appetizer portion was ONE ravioli. Caprese salad was good.

This was our first time to eat at Mamma Maria's. The food was exceptional, the service impeccable and would love to go back. We were expecting more traditional Italian dishes on the menu with red sauce but we're not disappointed with our entres. I had Lamb and my husband hat Halibut. The bread was great and the desserts fabulous. Would recommend to others for sure. The view out the window was of the old Boston Architecture. A fun experience. The tables are pretty close to each other so if you are looking for intimacy and privacy, you will probably not feel that. However, it does have nice lighting so it did feel kind of Romantic. A bit pricey but the food and service made it worth the price.

In a city of great restaurants, Mamma Maria stands out as a special experience. Located in the North End among dozens of fine establishments, Mamma Maria finds a way to distinguish itself with a unique menu that includes great pasta dishes and out of this world appetizers. Potions are perfectly sized, and the wine selection is outstanding. The service is excellent, and valet parking in the North End, where parking can be a problem, is a great benefit.

We went to this restaurant on recommendation of a friend. Although the menu is very fancy, we didn't have trouble finding something that we would like to try. The steak was amazing - loved the sauce. Also, the fresh basil pesto and bread to start was delicious and required a refill! This is a pricy restaurant but worth the money if celebrating a special occasion.

The perfect experience, Mamma Maria's delivered it all! We were seated immediately even tho a bit early for our reservation, our waiter and assistants were amazing: attentive ,pleasant, knowledgable and efficient and the ambience was just as we imagined and geared to make the diner feel very special. The upstairs tables look out to the square in front of the Paul Revere house. The food was wonderful, we started with warm tomato and buffalo mozzarella which they plated separately so my husband and I could share. The bolognese was amazing! The raspberry tiramisu which we shared for dessert was the perfect end to a sumptuous meal. Wine pairings suggested by our waiter hit the mark and coffee served with fresh cream and brown sugar cubes, yes!

This is a beautifully maintained restaurant in the north end one block off of the very busy Hanover St. I had let them know that this was a 15th anniversary and a romantic table would be appreciated. We were seated at great table overlooking North Square, warmly greeted with a Happy Anniversary and given champagne. From the manager to the bus person all of the staff was warm, friendly, greeted us with a warm smiles an were not even the least bit rushed. Our food was excellent and the tables are spaced so that you are not right on top on each other. Overall a great experience.

Mamma Maria is a great choice if you're looking for a truly first-class dining experience in the North End. Based on the name, you might be inclined to think that it is simply one of the dozens of standard, middle-of-the-road Italian restaurants so abundant in the neighborhood, but nothing could be further from the truth. The food, service, and ambiance are all top-notch. The menu changes regularly based on whatever is fresh and in-season, so it's hard to recommend specific dishes, but everything we ordered was delicious. My only suggestion would be to include some more moderately-priced wine selections on the menu. Most bottles were at least $60, and many were considerably higher. Some $30-to-$40 options would be nice.

We had our last dinner in Boston at Mama Maria's located in the heart of little Italy and the atmosphere was perfect. We had the oysters to start, with the rabbit and striped bass for our entree's. The wine was great as well. Service was a little slow, but overall it was a great way to finish our trip.

Absolutely awesome service, from the maitre d'hotel who seated us to our server who knew the menu well and she sensed what to steer us to after only a few moments of discussing a beautiful and varied menu ::: We never felt rushed, the plates were gorgeously presented, the pasta starters were sublime with fine, house-made pastas bursting with flavored fillings and the Osso Bucco was a melt-in-your-mouth classic sitting on top of perfectly prepared risotto, topped with finely shaved and crispy-fried strips of yam, served with a marrow knife to dig all of the goodness out of the bone... We would be in dining heaven if this restaurant were in our home city, but sadly San Francisco doesn't have anything even remotely close to this... W-O-W!

Glad we had Saturday night reservations, but our upstairs table for two was crammed between larger tables making it very tight quarters. Because of the noise I had great difficulty communicating with the waiter (logistically he could not come near my side of the table) and felt he spent more time with other diners explaining the menu and wine choices. The food was good, yet pricey - but had anticipated this after looking at other reviews. Especially enjoyed the lobster ravioli. I would come back again, but only after trying other similar restaurants in Little Italy first.

If you're looking for an authentic, classy North End experience, this restaurant is it. Ambiance is amazing, very intimate with multiple dining rooms, looks like it's right out of the 1700s. The food is incredible, my date and I had lobster ravioli for an appetizer, which was great but the portion was a bit small for $16. Dinner was rabbit pasta and clam, crab and uni pasta, both of which were outstanding. Dessert may have been the best part, however. The raspberry tiramisu was to die for, absolutely would recommend it to anybody dining here. The chocolate lava cake with mint ice cream was very good as well. Amazing food, fantastic service, only thing I didn't like was the cost, it was very expensive for two people.

Charming North End Italian restaurant in a wonderful location at North Square. I had the Bolognese Pasta (Bolognese as prepared in the village of Serralunga di Crea with spicy artisanal pepperoncini pasta). My wife had a spinach and corn ravioli. Both were excellent and worth coming back for. The waiter, James, provided attentive service.

    (1) The menu was generally not Italian -- we were looking for top of the line Italian and got few choices (2) Service was rushed -- the waiter served the main course while we were still eating our appetizers and the busboy tried to take away our plates when we were clearly not finished. (3) Lovely setting and nice view, but: One of our four entrees was excellent (steak). Otherwise, the visual presentations were mixed and the taste of the food was not memorable or special, particularly for the $$$. We went on a Friday night at 7:45 and the staff should all have been at the top of their games, but they were not. We had guests from out of town and were embarrassed at the mediocrity of the food and the substandard service.

Although the restaurants runs only for 17:00-22:00 for dinner, no one was rushing us, but very generous. We had a great wine, apetizers, and nice pasta. While the food was delicious and inventive, we were rushed from start to finish. We were hovered over to order, entrees were brought while one member of the party was still eating an appetizer, dishes were cleared before the entire party had finished. If Mamma Maria wants to be an upscale experience, they need to re-think how quickly they turn tables.

Dinner for two on 9/24/14. Reservation was on time. Food and ambiance were ok but not anything extraordinary. Service was excellent. Seating was "close". Noise level in the second floor dining room was unacceptable and well above that of a busy restaurant. We couldn't talk to each other over the "impolite extremely loud speakers" from two nearby tables. Certainly neither a "romantic" or "formal" setting. Bottom line: okay restaurant but a poor value. We would not recommend it to others looking for a special night out.

The restaurant, in an old North End house, is a cluster of small, elegantly furnished rooms, with the walls painted a soothing taupe, a white chair rail, and big windows looking over North Square. Quiet Italian opera plays over the PA system. The service is attentive, if slightly too intrusive, but the food is first rate. The menu is excellent but not overly extensive. We shared prosciutto and warm figs with gorgonzola, has entrees of seared scallops on spaghetti squash and pappardelle with rabbit sauce, and desserts of an individual peach crostada with peach mascarpone and panna cotta with fresh berries. All were superb. The wine list has excellent but unfamiliar Italian wines, with most wines falling in the $50-70 range.

Not the usual Italian restaurant. Mamma Maria's is located off Hanover Street with windows looking out on historic North Square. Many small dining rooms in a lovely old townhouse that feels like a private club. The menu is high-end Italian, changing daily based on what is available in the markets, and the service matches that quality. Our Mission fig & gorgonzola appetizer was wonderful. Main courses were scallops, lovely and sweet, and a ravioli with corn and mushrooms. Both excellent. No room for desserts, though.
