Diner Reviews
  • "We really enjoyed the food and the wine list. Quality at reasonable prices. We were disappointed with the service. Cold and condescending. When we wanted to order starters we were told that we had to put in the full order at once. Normally, we order middle of the table starters while we discuss what we want for the main course. Not at Mamma Maria's. After the main course, we had dessert. Immediately after dessert, we were presented with the check. When I handed the check back saying we would have coffee, I was told I should have ordered coffee with dessert. Unusual. Probably not going back. "

  • "The Monkfish was out of this world. Fresh Olives and bread, and excellent service. Authentic fresh ingredients all the way around. Topped off with desert menu that will not disappoint. The portions were not overwhelming, but combined with salad, bread, olives, and desert, we left feeling happy, like we'd just had the perfect meal. The beautiful spring weather in Boston made the walk back to our hotel through the North End made for a memorable experience."

  • "Our group of four enjoyed a fabulous meal here. We were early for our reservation but we're still able to be seated quickly. Our waiter suggested the appetizer special that easily serve four ,it was fabulous ,best mozzarella I have ever tasted. Although pricey,it is well worth a visit"

  • "My husband and I ate at Mamma Maria's last summer with family and it was wonderful. When it came time to pick a place to have dinner for our 20th wedding anniversary, we both agreed that Mamma Maria's was the perfect choice and we were right. We had a wonderful table for 2 upstairs. Our waiter was great. Food was delicious. Could not have asked for a better experience."

  • "Went here on a surprise date with my girlfriend and had a great time. The food was excellent (highly recommend the rabbit pasta) and the beer and wine list is impressive as well. Tucked in a little corner in the North End, if you make it here, you won't want to go anywhere else again."

  • "We went there as a four person work group. We had enough privacy to talk business in peace. The food was tremendous. We especially enjoyed the tuna tartare on cucumber and the duet of ravioli. the setting is is authentic Italian with a view of the Paul Revere house. Valet parking makes it convenient. Last but not least the waitstaff was professional, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Thank you Mamma Maria to a great experience!"

  • "After reading favorable reviews my girlfriend and I went here on Sunday night and had a very romantic dinner, with fantastic service and even better food. The cuisine was nothing like I've had before in the North End, a real authentic Italian eatery...I'll be going back for sure."

  • "Went here for a date. It can get quite loud, but the homey atmosphere is nice and romantic. The tables are spaced far apart, a hard find in the North End. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and polite as were all the other attendants. The food was AMAZING. The portions are just the right size and everything we ate from the appetizers to the deserts was absolutely delicious. This is surely one of, if not the best spots in the North End for a romantic Italian experience."

  • "Outstanding resturaunt located in the North End of Bostom. The food and service were outstanding. After dinner I would recommend walking in the neighborhood sampling the patries in the local shops."

  • "As a resident of the north end, I have tried a lot of the restaurants in my area and this is by far the best! Yes the food is pricey, but it definitely worth the price. It is a great place to go out to treat yourself, and you will not regret it. My favorite dishes hands down are the duck appetizer (to die for, literally I think I almost licked the plate the flavors were so amazing) and the meatballs. For the main course I highly recommend any of their mushroom dishes or the Gorgonzola stuffed pork. My mouth is salivating just thinking about their food. You also cannot go wrong with their dessert menu. I love their panna cotta or apple tart. I highly recommend this restaurant, although I have to warn you the host is best awkward..."

  • "The food was fresh and delicious. I'm vegetarian, and although the menu favors meat-eaters, I found some great veg-friendly options."

  • "An interesting menu -- not your run-of-the-mill Italian. We had the ravioli duet (one plate of mushroom and one plate of asparagus) and the bolognese. The music wafting in set the mood perfectly. We sat by the window, which looks out over the cobblestone street. Would go again for sure!"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our 11th anniversary at Mama Maria's. We had a lovely table by the window overlooking North Square where Paul Revere's House sits. The ambiance was romantic and once we were seated we were greeted promptly by our waiter with a glass of prosecco courtesy of the house. The service was excellent. We shared a lobster ravioli appetizer that was delicious. My husband had the swordfish, which was a generous center cut portion. I had the seafood orecchiette, which was good, but not fantastic. Although, in full disclosure I am not a pasta person and I should have ordered something else. The area is touristy and I wouldn't call this a shi-shi restaurant, but the service, ambiance, and value make this a great choice."

  • "Our party of four was seated at a wonderful table on the second floor with an excellent view of Boston in the background. The staff was cordial- our waiter in particular made the experience a delight by providing presence without intrusion. While there were favorites, all dishes were of excellent quality and presentation. Some of the "winning dishes" included the excellent carpaccio, the suckling pig, the osso buco, and the duck with venison sausage. The wine list provides a large selection, and our server was knowledgable and offered an excellent pairing. All in all, a great evening! We will be returning!"

  • "Excellent in all regards. Series of smaller rooms in a historic house provide intimate environment...refined Italian classics with updated presentation, packed with great character. Enjoyed the ravioli appetizer and swordfish main. Loved the Rosso di Montalcino wine...will be back."

  • "We enjoyed just about everything here. My husband ordered the Osso Buco, which he described as flavor-packed and savory. My halibut was perfectly done, with tasty trimmings of mushrooms and whipped parsnips. We sat on the top floor which was quiet compared to the rest of the establishment, which was packed and noisy. Our waiter took a great deal of time to help us select a wine that was good but not expensive (we've been disappointed too many times by expensive subpar wines in Boston restaurants). The service was excellent. Other services, coat and valet parking, finished off a fairly perfect evening."

  • "Our food was pretty solid and the room was quaint. Nicely presented dishes with good flavors however I wanted the food to be hotter. Overall, had the value proposition been better, I'd happily have rated my experience higher. There was also an absence of an anticipated arrival even though we had a reservation."

  • "I moved back to Boston 18 months ago, and have eaten in many restaurants. But the meal at Mamma Maria's was the best yet. Great food --- from table bread through appetizers and the main meal --- nice presentation, attentive and friendly service, good location (across the street from Paul Revere's house). What's not to like?"

  • "In a three day trip to Boston, I had two nights planned. A Bruins game for one and an outstanding dinner for another. I made a reservation for Momma Maria for our dinner. Mommy Maria fulfilled my expectations. It is a restaurant that truly lives up to its reputation. I have every intention of dinning there again, next time I'm in Boston."

  • "Mamma Maria's is our go-to Italian place in the North End. The food is consistently top-niotch -- fresh, often local, and beautifully prepared. The wait staff is attentive and friendly, and our waiter didn't even twitch when we opted for no dessert. He made it about the occasion, the food and our good time, not about upselling."

  • "Every time there's a special event etc., I try to think of where to eat…..and it always comes back to Mamma Maria. I like the menu and this visit was no exception. I had grilled oysters (kinda Rockefeller) and rabbit ragout. My partner had salad + steak. My oysters were delicious, but only 2 were properly heated, the other 3 cool. The rabbit was delicious, white meat in brown sauce w/pappardelle pasta. The steak was fantastic! Raspberry tiramisu for dessert: fantastic! Our waiter was very good-natured, helpful + really made us feel welcome and comfortable. By the time we were leaving the room had filled + become a bit too noisy. We asked for, and received, a table away from foot traffic. Even w/o a perfect score, MM is still my favorite."

  • "I picked Mama Maria for a North End dinner on a recent trip to Boston based on reviews but the name led my husband to think it was a more "traditional" old-school Italian place (which can also be great). What we found was a charming and lovely dining room, exceptional service and delightful food. We started by sharing a salad and the baked oysters which were amazing. I had the osso buco, a beautiful classic presentation with a deep rich sauce. He had a bolognese pasta like I've never seen or tasted. The pasta is infused with pepperoncini and I'd go back just to taste that again. The knowledgable waiter guided up to a moderately priced bottle of wine that suited the meal. When he heard we needed a cab, he came out with us to call one!"

  • "The ambience here is shabby chic-very cozy and romantic. Food is inventive. Don't expect a typical north end menu withs lots of pasta and red sauce. The rabbit pasta is phenomenal. We loved the antipasti for the table, which included scallops, some cured meats, mozzarella, and some really wonderful baked oysters. The bread and pesto served is also very flavorful. Service is somewhat disappointing-rather aloof and indifferent. Portions are very small for the price. With just a few changes, this could be an outstanding restaurant. We enjoyed ourselves, however, and may go back."
