Diner Reviews
  • "They have a number of rooms. The room we were in was quite loud, but they also have private rooms for two which looked very romantic. Food was great, rabbit pasta and Bolognese both highly recommended. I thought the Bolognese was actually better, but the rabbit pasta is obviously much lighter and leaner."

  • "The food and service were both outstanding. The waiter was very attentive without being intrusive. The mozzarella and roasted tomato appetizer was a dream; pesto was best I ever tasted."

  • "We enjoyed an excellent dinner at Mamma Maria on our first night in Boston. The tenderloin was excellent, but the highlight of the meal with the super foie gras. I recommend this restaurant for delicious food, overly generous portions, in a lovely setting, just steps from Paul Revere's home."

  • "the service was very good and so was the food. Not your traditional Italian restaurant. They offer a lot of unique dishes"

  • "Being form a suburb of Boston, my wife and I regularly eat in the North End so I've tried many restaurants including a lot of the known name ones. But I've always avoided Mamma Maria because it seemed like a tourist trap since it is most often recommended by concierges in town. Finally gave it a try on a slow 4th of July weekend and was pleasantly surprised. The service was impeccable - not rushed at all (there were still tables available at 8pm). Each dish was right on the border of very good to great. Pasta Bolognese was one of the best I've ever had. I can honestly say it was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had in the North End. Highly recommended for romantic/special occasion meals."

  • "We were extremely happy with the food and service. We had the tuna tartare, pasta with rabbit, and spinach ravioli with mushrooms and fresh corn. All three dishes were excellent ! We would definitely recommend the restaurant and will return on future visits."

  • "Everything was wonderful - food, service, ambiance. We didn't have time to change at our hotel (having too much fun taking in all the sights of this vibrant city) so we were way too casually dressed, but they made us feel completely welcome."

  • "Love this place, when friends come from out of town and they want to go to the north end, we always go here. The food and services always topnotch, never have had a bad meal. Little hint ask to be seated up stair in the terrace room over looking the square, for one the view is amazing and the tables are not as close together."

  • "Our meals were outstanding. Rabbit with pappardelle, fresh haddock, Angus beef, summer salads and duck appetizer. It was a family event for six and everyone was happy with the food and service. The ambience is terrific, in a restored townhouse on a quiet block. A wonderful time was had by all, away from the craziness of Hanover Street. Very expensive, but worth every penny."

  • "Charming setting in the middle of a bustling street in North End. Our initial impression can be best described as skeptical as we entered a very small "lobby" and were rather abruptly taken to our table upstairs. Fortunately, the rest of the evening served to make this one of our favorite restaurants. The restaurant consists of several small dining rooms, making for a very intimate dining experience. We dined in the top floor with open windows looking out over the bustiling cobblestone street below. There is even a private room for 2-4 people that looks as if it would be perfect for that special occasion. The food was outstanding- tuna tartar, halibut, grilled scallops, figs and prosciutto."

  • "For our last evening in Boston, celebrating my 30 year anniversary in business, we chose Mama Maria's. While I generally felt the food was beyond reproach, sadly the same could not be said for the service. Our server was Rich. Several issues related to service were quite unsettling: 1. Bread plates were inexplicably removed while a half full bread basket remained for much of the rest of the meal. 2. A less expensive half bottle of wine was substituted for the one I ordered. 3. Rich, rather clumsily, while delivering my wife's salad, placed his hand all over the rim of her water glass almost knocking it over. The correct response would have been to immediately replace the mishandled glass, but none was offered. Service needs improvement."

  • "I love finding a new restaurant that is excellent in every way! This was my first time going to this restaurant and it will definitely not be the last! My husband and I went with another couple. The four of us all really enjoyed ourselves! The food was so fresh and delicious:) Our waitress was very fun and experienced. She answered all our questions and really gave us great service. The halibut was amazing, the bolognese pasta was excellent, actually everything we ordered was yummy! I highly recommend this place:)"

  • "our table was basically in the middle of any archway that the waitstaff used to come in/out of dining room. it was a very uncomfortable spot. next time i'll make sure we don't get seated there ever again. the mint gelato and raspberry tiramisu were outstanding desserts. usually the desserts in the No End are sugary or just average; they were as good as the appetizers, main course."

  • "We went to Mamma Maria to celebrate my husband getting a promotion. This was our first time at the restaurant. The food was incredible and the service was impeccable. Eric was our server he was fantastic. Pricey but worth it for a special occasion. Mamma Maria will definitely be our go to from now on for special occasions and anniversaries. We could not be happier with our experience."

  • "This was our first time in Boston and our first time at Mamma Maria. The food was amazing and our server was awesome. We finished our food and ordered a second drink. We were probably sitting there for 15 minutes after we finished our food and JUST paid the check when a member of management came up to us and said they had a large party coming in and asked if we'd move to the bar upstairs. I thought this was completely rude and tactless. This is not a situation where we were holding the table. I would never go back."

  • "We where excited to go. We love the North End especially in the summer months. The party was 5 five people. The table was ready upon arrival, we sat and then the waiter started. The waiter was high pressure. He rushed every aspect of the experience. Overpriced, small portions. Expensive......not worth the $$$$"

  • "This was the third time that my wife and I have been to Mama Maria's and just like the first two it did not disappoint. Our waiter was friendly and helped with the selection of what turned out to be a great tasting red wine, 2011 Contrada. We started with a salad and the lobster pasta which was perfect. For our main course my wife had the Halibut, which was delicious and I had the Osso Buco which was out of this world. Anytime we go to Boston we will be making it a point to try and return for what is guaranteed to be a outstanding dinner."

  • "One of the nicer and upscale Italian Restaurants I have dinned at in the Nothend. A bit pricey but overall nice place to go to for that special occasion. Food was very tasty with nice portions. Wine list is all Italian. All set in a beautiful old building"

  • "Mamma Maria's was an excellent choice after a long week of work. The atmosphere was relaxed, our server was engaging with a dry wit that kept up with our tired but humorous nature and the food and drink were to die for!! We each had a different drink selection from a wide variety and no one was disappointed. We had the Osso Buco, this is a staple signature dish for Mamma Maria and it did not disappoint. It was fall off the bone succulent paired with an excellent rissoto and the portions were just right. I would highly recommend anyone in Boston for the first (or fifty first) time pay Mamma Maria's a visit, it is well worth every minute and penny you will spend there!!! (And bring some good friends with you!)"

  • "The young lady tending bar at Mama Maria's is a great conversationalist and recognized our special anniversary. We've been coming to Mama Maria's for decades for anniversary and special family dinners. We have always enjoyed impeccable service, an outstanding dinner, delicious ambiance, and a thoroughly relaxing evening - often at our favorite table! Our waiter Thomas was superb. Thank you!"

  • "Overall the experience was good, but we found the place to be a bit too expensive -- particularly when comparing it to the many options in the north end. Bolognese pasta was was around $28, which is the most I've ever seen."

  • "Great Italian food and wine in very pleasant surroundings, served by discreet but attentive staff. Fresh flowers, attractive outlook over North Sq, well-priced but excellent menu and helpful staff unfazed by us turning up with 4 suitcases, made this an ideal stop for dinner en route from Vancouver to Dubai. Definitely a restaurant to be revisited when next in Boston, with or without luggage."

  • "Showed my college grad niece and a couple of her friends around Boston and ended up selecting Mamma Maria's for dinner based on many great reviews. We were seated in a room on the 2nd floor of this row house and had excellent service throughout the meal. All 5 diners raved about their dishes-Frutti di Mare, Bolognese, Halibut, Cod, and Rabbit. Although I enjoyed the rabbit, my favorite was the Halibut. Classic preparations-incredible flavors. Good for an an anniversary, special date, or birthday. The noise level was a little loud for my taste, but there were a number of parties in the room we were in but it quieted down when a larger party left. We will definitely return."

  • "What a great restaurant! To start, warm bread and fresh made pesto and olives - to die for. It was difficult to only eat one piece of bread in order to save room for the rest of our meal. I had the Lobster Ravioli to start which was delicious, great lobster flavour. My SO had the carpaccio which was awesome - perfectly balanced flavours. I had seafood with black risotto which was amazing - the rice had squid ink infused to it and it had unbelievable flavour. My SO had the fruitti di mare, he loved it. All in all a great experience, service was excellent and the food was amazing!"

  • "I've been to Mamma Maria's several times now and have never been disappointed with the experience. We had everything from the lobster ravioli to the Bolognese pasta to the pork tenderloin in our party of 4. Spring salad was an excellent starter and portions were more than enough for everyone. Atmosphere was much better than typical spots down in the North End because you can actually eat and talk without having to yell at the person across the table. They also offer valet parking which makes the hassle of finding a parking spot uneventful. Highly recommend Mamma Maria's if you want consistency, quality, and overall value from the food to the service to even the valet!!!"

  • "As the title says, the food was delicious. My mother and I had the grilled asparagus salad and that was divine - many levels of savory flavor. Our main courses were also SO good! I had the rabbit pasta she had the lobster pasta, two staples that they try to keep on their changing-daily menu. The only problem was we couldn't make a reservation for 7:30, and settled for 6:30. When we got there, the WHOLE top floor was empty! We were one of maybe 3 or 4 tables. Also, the waiter was very polite, but obviously bored which made him seem hovery, but not down for small talk. The plates were removed just before we were done and we felt very rushed. Even when we left at 7:45, the restaurant was still pretty empty. Service was just.... odd."

  • "We really enjoyed Mamma Maria. The food was excellent, and the service was very good. It is a bit noisy, and the tables are close together, so don't expect a lot of privacy. But all around, it was very good."

  • "I have eaten here several times and always have great food and excellent service. Our waitress was great. This time we had folks with dairy restrictions in their diet. They were offered several options and had a great meal. We wanted to try the grappa but didn't know what we were doing. Our waitress made some excellent recommendations. The atmosphere is very nice as well. This is a go to place when I want to be sure to have good food and great service."
