Diner Reviews
  • "Thought the food was about average of most places in the north end with a few a lot better and others worse Service was terrible , not friendly or energetic or anything that made me want to come again Spinach pasta with corn was amazing - steak and other pasta items were bland and below average"

  • "Mama Maria gave my daughter Juliana Hatfield a beautiful birthday party by putting us into one of their beautiful private rooms overlooking North Square. What a special treat that room is! There were just three of us, and Juliana, who sings in loud venues when she tours and doesn't need noise when she's off, was delighted with the serene ambience, not to mention the delicious food that worked for her, a vegan. Just perfect."

  • "Unfortunately and disappointingly, our once favorite North End dining site has slipped a bit. Menu not as diverse [e.g., no more tier-towered antipasto, no more porcini risotto], food not as tastefully prepared [largely flat and bland], service not as attentive or polished [e.g., after waiter spilled glass of wine while pouring, we had to ask for clean-up napkins and a replacement glass, which never came, had to wait forever for prepared desserts]--though it's still as noisy as ever! We've long enjoyed going to MM, to both public and private rooms, but it seems time to look elsewhere."

  • "I took my 3 nieces. We had very good appetizers -lobster pasta, figs with prosciutto (table favorite), scallops (definitely over cooked), and tomato and mozzerella. I had the summer ravioli which was excellent. Unfortunately the other 3 were very dissatisfied with their meals- 2 got the shrimp pasta, not good. And my oldest niece got the seafood combo served over cous cous (really?) the service was excellent- he recommended a very good wine."

  • "We had a fantastic meal and drinks. The service was fantastic Eric (Enrique) was a tremendous help and made the dinner special. He treated my daughter like a princess which always makes a dad happy. Best meal we had all week in Boston."

  • "We loved this restaurant. Recommended by a family member that lives in Boston...decided to go...had thought about asking for the second floor window view, didn't but...surprise, there we were looking over the square and skyline. The food was fabulous. Had lamb three ways and it was superb! Tuna tartar for an appetizer was fabulous and I wanted several other app options. Wine choices were great...what a great place!"

  • "The food is delicious. I love the italian cuisine!"

  • "The ambience & meal was a perfect 4 hour experience. Jason, the waiter insisted on a special wine, different than the Cabernet I chose. It was Georgio Primo, perfect with the veal. Gratzie Mille"

  • "Dinner was excellent as always. Service seemed to be a bit slow on this occasion. Dinner took longer than usual as compared to parties at other tables, thus leading to downgrade on service for this visit."

  • "Took my girlfriend here for a romantic dinner to celebrate her birthday, and we both had a wonderful time! The ambience was very relaxing, the food was (of course) absolutely delicious, and the service was rapid and polite. Would definitely recommend others to attend this restaurant, so long as they have the necessary dough to blow."

  • "I recently moved to the North End and wanted to thank a group of friends for their help. I had heard great things about Mamma Maria and they did not disappoint!! From the moment we walked in the door, we were treated like special guests. Our waiter, Tom, helped us decide what appetizers and how much to order and also suggested wine pairing. The appetizers were all delicious, especially the figs and prosciutto and the lobster pasta. I ordered the Rabbit Pasta and shared with no one - it was fabulous! Others had the Bistecca, the Frutti de Mare and the fish special. Everyone was delighted with their choices. Dessert was a must - raspberry tiramisu, panna cotte, apple tart and the chocolate heaven called "Della Nonna." All to die for!"

  • "We had the opportunity to sit on the second floor in the sun room. Beautiful table that overlooked the street on a perfect summer evening. Meal was outstanding. Pastas were so fresh...we actually ordered a separate side of pasta with marinara sauce just to have a bit more of that yumminess. Richard, our server, was the best. Very well versed in the entire menu and his recommendations were perfect for us. He had great suggestions for wines. And even though it was not chocolate, the raspberry tirimusu was amazing. Definitely a place to try in the North End if you are looking for a top notch Italian - many to choose from but this one stands out."

  • "This was an excellent choice for a restaurant in the historic section of the north end which does not have your typical tourist type menu. We requested to be seated on the upper level porch with open sliding windows to have a view of the activity on the charming cobblestone street below. Everything was perfect...the service, wine list, and delicious choices. Highly recommend this one. CBB"

  • "The menu is fresh everyday. The food is expertly prepared and presented (to include perfect portion sizes). Our new "standard" to compare other restaurants in The North End."

  • "We had an excellent seat by an open window to celebrate my birthday. The food was outstanding and the pace was perfect. Definitely a place to try if you haven't already found this place."

  • "There is an insane line outside of Giacomo for all the wrong reasons. Giacomo is homemade pasta and very affordable prices and does not take reservations. This is the cheaters way to see popular. On the other hand, Mamma Maria takes the classy route. Exceptional food, service and ambiance with the best view in all of Boston's North End. The food is Italian, but is is high-end Italian, not spaghetti and meatballs. The are 100% booked every night, so make a reservation. If you walk up with no reservation and expect a table, don't be surprised with the response you get from the host."

  • "They have a number of rooms. The room we were in was quite loud, but they also have private rooms for two which looked very romantic. Food was great, rabbit pasta and Bolognese both highly recommended. I thought the Bolognese was actually better, but the rabbit pasta is obviously much lighter and leaner."

  • "We enjoyed an excellent dinner at Mamma Maria on our first night in Boston. The tenderloin was excellent, but the highlight of the meal with the super foie gras. I recommend this restaurant for delicious food, overly generous portions, in a lovely setting, just steps from Paul Revere's home."

  • "the service was very good and so was the food. Not your traditional Italian restaurant. They offer a lot of unique dishes"

  • "The food and service were both outstanding. The waiter was very attentive without being intrusive. The mozzarella and roasted tomato appetizer was a dream; pesto was best I ever tasted."

  • "Everything was wonderful - food, service, ambiance. We didn't have time to change at our hotel (having too much fun taking in all the sights of this vibrant city) so we were way too casually dressed, but they made us feel completely welcome."

  • "Being form a suburb of Boston, my wife and I regularly eat in the North End so I've tried many restaurants including a lot of the known name ones. But I've always avoided Mamma Maria because it seemed like a tourist trap since it is most often recommended by concierges in town. Finally gave it a try on a slow 4th of July weekend and was pleasantly surprised. The service was impeccable - not rushed at all (there were still tables available at 8pm). Each dish was right on the border of very good to great. Pasta Bolognese was one of the best I've ever had. I can honestly say it was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had in the North End. Highly recommended for romantic/special occasion meals."

  • "Love this place, when friends come from out of town and they want to go to the north end, we always go here. The food and services always topnotch, never have had a bad meal. Little hint ask to be seated up stair in the terrace room over looking the square, for one the view is amazing and the tables are not as close together."

  • "We went to Mamma Maria with friends who were visiting us from out of town. We finally decided to try it because of all of the rave reviews we've received from friends and coworkers about the food. The restaurant is situated inside an old townhouse in North Square, its cute. The atmosphere was a little stuffy but not too bad. The reason we'll be back to Mamma Maria (probably quite a bit) was the amazing food. Both the food and cocktails were out of this world, knock your socks off delicious. We live just over on Battery street so we will be making the wander to Mamma Maria again in the near future."

  • "For our last evening in Boston, celebrating my 30 year anniversary in business, we chose Mama Maria's. While I generally felt the food was beyond reproach, sadly the same could not be said for the service. Our server was Rich. Several issues related to service were quite unsettling: 1. Bread plates were inexplicably removed while a half full bread basket remained for much of the rest of the meal. 2. A less expensive half bottle of wine was substituted for the one I ordered. 3. Rich, rather clumsily, while delivering my wife's salad, placed his hand all over the rim of her water glass almost knocking it over. The correct response would have been to immediately replace the mishandled glass, but none was offered. Service needs improvement."

  • "We where excited to go. We love the North End especially in the summer months. The party was 5 five people. The table was ready upon arrival, we sat and then the waiter started. The waiter was high pressure. He rushed every aspect of the experience. Overpriced, small portions. Expensive......not worth the $$$$"

  • "This was our first time in Boston and our first time at Mamma Maria. The food was amazing and our server was awesome. We finished our food and ordered a second drink. We were probably sitting there for 15 minutes after we finished our food and JUST paid the check when a member of management came up to us and said they had a large party coming in and asked if we'd move to the bar upstairs. I thought this was completely rude and tactless. This is not a situation where we were holding the table. I would never go back."

  • "Charming setting in the middle of a bustling street in North End. Our initial impression can be best described as skeptical as we entered a very small "lobby" and were rather abruptly taken to our table upstairs. Fortunately, the rest of the evening served to make this one of our favorite restaurants. The restaurant consists of several small dining rooms, making for a very intimate dining experience. We dined in the top floor with open windows looking out over the bustiling cobblestone street below. There is even a private room for 2-4 people that looks as if it would be perfect for that special occasion. The food was outstanding- tuna tartar, halibut, grilled scallops, figs and prosciutto."

  • "I love finding a new restaurant that is excellent in every way! This was my first time going to this restaurant and it will definitely not be the last! My husband and I went with another couple. The four of us all really enjoyed ourselves! The food was so fresh and delicious:) Our waitress was very fun and experienced. She answered all our questions and really gave us great service. The halibut was amazing, the bolognese pasta was excellent, actually everything we ordered was yummy! I highly recommend this place:)"

  • "our table was basically in the middle of any archway that the waitstaff used to come in/out of dining room. it was a very uncomfortable spot. next time i'll make sure we don't get seated there ever again. the mint gelato and raspberry tiramisu were outstanding desserts. usually the desserts in the No End are sugary or just average; they were as good as the appetizers, main course."

  • "Our meals were outstanding. Rabbit with pappardelle, fresh haddock, Angus beef, summer salads and duck appetizer. It was a family event for six and everyone was happy with the food and service. The ambience is terrific, in a restored townhouse on a quiet block. A wonderful time was had by all, away from the craziness of Hanover Street. Very expensive, but worth every penny."

  • "We went to Mamma Maria to celebrate my husband getting a promotion. This was our first time at the restaurant. The food was incredible and the service was impeccable. Eric was our server he was fantastic. Pricey but worth it for a special occasion. Mamma Maria will definitely be our go to from now on for special occasions and anniversaries. We could not be happier with our experience."

  • "This was the third time that my wife and I have been to Mama Maria's and just like the first two it did not disappoint. Our waiter was friendly and helped with the selection of what turned out to be a great tasting red wine, 2011 Contrada. We started with a salad and the lobster pasta which was perfect. For our main course my wife had the Halibut, which was delicious and I had the Osso Buco which was out of this world. Anytime we go to Boston we will be making it a point to try and return for what is guaranteed to be a outstanding dinner."

  • "Mamma Maria's was an excellent choice after a long week of work. The atmosphere was relaxed, our server was engaging with a dry wit that kept up with our tired but humorous nature and the food and drink were to die for!! We each had a different drink selection from a wide variety and no one was disappointed. We had the Osso Buco, this is a staple signature dish for Mamma Maria and it did not disappoint. It was fall off the bone succulent paired with an excellent rissoto and the portions were just right. I would highly recommend anyone in Boston for the first (or fifty first) time pay Mamma Maria's a visit, it is well worth every minute and penny you will spend there!!! (And bring some good friends with you!)"
