A word from Mama's Boy Southern Table & Refuge
We call ourselves a “southern table and refuge”because that’s exactly what we are. A place to enjoy casual, yet refined country cuisine where you’re treated like family and can seek respite from the world in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere that pays tribute – in every way – to all that’s great about the great South.

From the reclaimed wood from a Florence, South Carolina, water tower that brings warmth to our space, to the authentic Alabama railroad ties from which to hang your hat, Mama’s Boy is putting the “South” in South Norwalk. As for the food? Fabulously fresh, locally sourced, lovingly prepared. You’ll find all your southern favorites, from classic shrimp and grits to country fried game hen, with a modern Mama’s Boy twist…because we like to present “low country” in high style.

Diner Reviews
  • "The sangria wasn't good. It was watery. The Mac & cheese was supposed to be 4 cheese with cornbread crust and bacon. There was barely any cheese and it was bland. The fried green tomato were cut too think and so you bit in and it was water. The burger was bland and dry. The rosemary fries had zero rosemary. I wouldn't go back."

  • "Shrimp and grits and Cod with Succotash were both truly outstanding. Service good but not great. Noisy."

  • "No complaints on the food, if anything the prices seemed a bit high but not unreasonable considering the area. At times the staff seemed a bit frosty but every place in sono serves a side of attitude with their entrees."

  • "The food was not very good. My fiancé and I ordered the chicken and waffles. First set of waffle came to us cold, hard and burnt. We asked for more and the second set was uncooked and very blond. Not happy with the order. They did take off one of the chicken and waffle orders, but that wasn't enough to make us happy and for us to try the restaurant again. My niece was unhappy with her pork and our server was very forgetful."

  • "Their food is not as good as I remember when they first opened. For the prices they charge, they need to work on their food. Taste was poor. Good friendly service. A little too loud, hard to have a conversation."

  • "Dined al fresco at Mama's Boy on a nice summer night. I highly recommend the salty watermelon drink. The food was outstanding. The chicken & waffles were very good. The shrimp & grits were amazing!!! Our waitress Melissa was attentive and very positive with recommendations. We will be back!!"

  • "We had previously eaten dinner at Mama's Boy and wanted to try the lunch. My husband thought the fried chicken skin appetizer was terrific. I had the chopped salad which also was terrific, but big enough for a meal. We both had the fried chicken breast w/biscuit which was good, but biscuit was too dense. I enjoyed the fried "yardbird" at dinner better. Desserts are great and BIG! Husband had the coconut cake, and I had the chocolate pecan pie which was served with vanilla ice cream. Both could have been shared, but we decided it was a day to eat everything! Service was very good. We will definitely be returning."

  • "The food was very good, a nice change from the usual dining fare. The chocolate cake we order was to die for....4 of us could not finish one piece!"

  • "The food at Mama's Boy was great - very unique to other restaurants in the SONO area and delicious. We originally sat outside but moved inside due to mosquitos and it was getting dark - our waiter was happy to accommodate and move us indoors partway through our dinner."

  • "Food not very good...service was quite slow. We were very disappointed as we had heard good things about the restaurant. It was very much "not special"."

  • "Great food! Great Service! Great beer! Great cake! However I'd like to ask them to improve the lighting. The restaurant was too dark. So dark that I cannot see what I was eating."

  • "Must say we were disappointed in this trip to Mama's Boy. Have been for brunch several times and really enjoyed it. This time we were there for dinner during SONO restaurant week. This restaurant was on the higher priced list of choices ($29.99 for dinner), which under the fine print was for choice of two from Appetizer, entree, dessert. Many of the combinations came up to less than $29.99 from the regular menu! The choices were limited, as is expected on a special menu, but you could dine off the regular menu and spend less. Limited healthy choices, although the crab cakes were very good with no filler."

  • "Very happy to have finally dined at Mama's Boy Southern Table (although disappointed that no points were received). Service was terrific - hope it's like this all the time, and not just because we were the only people in the "parlor" part of the restaurant! Staff kept bringing out the corn muffins which were delicious. The BLT salad was very good, although big enough to serve 3 - 4. Husband thought the pork belly appetizer was one of the best he's had. Yardbird fried chicken was delicious, as was mac and cheese, although the latter could have used a bit more seasoning. Carrot cake portion big enough to serve 3 and very good. Even the coffee comes in a large cup! We'll definitely go back soon."

  • "We all really wanted to like this place but the food fell short of our expectations. The apps were good, deviled eggs and the fried chicken skin. The sides we ordered with the main course were not good at all and we (a table of 6) finished none of them (Mac and cheese-- super bland and not great cheese, collard greens-- extremely salty, you can't taste the greens, fried green tomatoes-- probably the worst I ever had). Entrees were ok but no one left saying that they will definitely come back. I think we were so bummed that we didn't even want to try the desserts. I am really hoping that this was an off night for them but it was a Saturday night so you'd think they'd be on their A game. It was also VERY loud, had trouble hearing our friends."

  • "I grew up in New Orleans & go down there a couple of times a year & know Southern food. I've been to Mama's Boy 6 or 7 times (lunch, brunch & dinner) & always have had a great meal & good service. The fried oyster appetizer, shrimp & grits & crab cakes are delicious. In fact, my husband said that he is going to order a double oyster appetizer just for himself the next time we go! And he's not going to share them with anyone! Salads, burgers & chicken dishes are good too. Great experience all around. Save room for dessert-the cakes are to die for!"

  • "There seem to be a number of southern themed restaurants lately. None of them pull it off like Mama's Boy. All of the dishes are exceptional and authentic. The atmosphere is lively, but in the day time, the proximity to the aquarium makes it the ultimate in family restaurants. There is plenty for the foodies to ponder, and the chicken and mac & cheese are great for the kids or fussy eaters. There is just nothing bad to say. Sitting the back used to mean a wait, but they adjusted and the service is great there as well. "

  • "Very good menu - optioning ranging from steak to fish...house favorite entree is Shrimp and Grits. Try the Fried Green Tomatoes. Good wine and beer selection. Go, enjoy!"

  • "The Pear Necessity is a necessity! Perfect cocktail to start the evening. The deviled eggs were great and you get five, so enough to share with the table. Shrimp and grits to die for!!! Best fries and mac and cheese too! We usually stay for cake, but it got really loud. Note if you want to have a conversation, ask for a table in the parlor. Never a disappointing meal here!"

  • "Tremendous brunch. Food was made with imagination (Lobster Eggs Benedict) and the "bottomless mimosa" had real pulp in the juice. The atmosphere is unique with reclaimed wood throughout and floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Maritime Center--quite a sight on a beautiful spring day. The staff is very friendly and the vibe is laid back. A year after opening, this place has only gotten better. The regular menu, with upscale southern cuisine, is also outstanding. Mama’s Boy is one of the best places to dine in SONO. "

  • "Tasty food but a little noisy. Good drinks. Definately a do-over is this up-and-coming section of South Norwalk near the Maritime Acquarium."

  • "Love this place! Great food, great service, always have a memorable time. If you order a slice of cake for dessert be prepared to share it or take some home because the slices are huge. "

  • "Love, love, love this place. I have been there about 6 times with different friends & have always had a good experience. Having grown up in New Orleans, it's comfort food for me! The shrimp & grits is always good. The catfish is delicious too. The desserts are amazing! Noise levels can be an issue particularly in the back room. "

  • "We really enjoyed this place as a family venue and this past visit as a time to hang with friends. Food was fresh..pitcher of sangria too much for us but may be good for about 8 people.. now we know...very accommodating staff/servers...we will definitely be back.."

  • "Some friends and I met for brunch at Mama's Boy. I was the first to arrive so I took a seat at the bar. The Mama's Mimosa Cocktail is amazing. The manager ( I think that is who she was) sat with me for a few moments and made some suggestions from the menu. I had the chicken and waffles and they were excellent. We also ordered the basket of pastries for the table. The cheddar, bacon and jalapeno scones!!!!!!!!!! SO GOOD!!! All in all, a great place and I will be going back."

  • "The first 2 times we went to Mama's Boy we were very happy with the food and overall service. The 3rd time the service was off, so we decided one more time. First the noise.....well you have to shout to your table mates to be heard. Not great. The food comes very quickly -- really too quickly between apps and entree. They have fabulous corn bread -- but this time we were never served any. When we asked, they "ran out" -- on a Saturday night at 7PM. My cornbread salad had no cornbread. We had to waive down the server to receive a check. When you pay $100 for 2, not including the tip I think you should expect a better experience. Eventhough my hubby loves the yardbird we won't be going back."

  • "Great spot in Norwalk, CT. The atmosphere is really cool and the live music is wonderful. I would not recommend the chicken and waffles for brunch if you are really hungry. The portion is suitable for a child. If you are an adult order something else or you are guarntee to leave hungry. The hostess saw the disappointment on my face when my entree arrived and she came over and asked what she could do to make me happy. She had them bring out the other half of the waffle. I was appreciative but still left hungry. The wait staff and hostesses are very friendly and aim to please ."

  • "Excellent Bloody Mary's (the green tomato mary is my favorite, but the bacon one is a close second). Food is a great southern take on traditional breakfast foods, portions are generous but not overwhelming, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to go back and try something else!"

  • "Best Southern cuisine in the area, from the inventive cocktails to fried oysters and chowder for starters to shrimp and grits and scallops with risotto for mains; burger one of the better around; save room for dessert, cakes are amazing."

  • "If you're going to name something the best dang manhattan you ever had, please at least be somewhat better than an average bar that isn't supposed to excel at whiskey. The food was pretty ok otherwise. Our waitress was pretty slow and sloppy. Did not appreciate the servers closing down the section well before closing time. Ruins atmosphere. "
