Diner Reviews
  • "I've been to mamajuana up in dyckman and I love it, so I didn't think that going to the one at the UWS would be any different but I was wrong. The food was too salty I couldn't even eat it. The menu makes it seem like mamajuana is a Mexican restaurant which is insane to me. Is a Dominican style restaurant and I think they should all stick to that. I was honestly disappointed. Aside the food being horrible, the service was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and catered to all our needs. I'm definitely not going back here. I'll stick to mamajuana up in dyckman for sure!"

  • "Food was okay. Drinks were okay. Overall, okay. Nothing spectacular. A bit expensive relative to the food quality. Service could be a smidge better. I would come back for the drinks, maybe."

  • "Bought a groupon for this restaurant as it was recommended to me by a friend. I thought overall the food, and the restaurant were good. I really enjoyed it. The service on the other hand could use extra training. Perhaps it was an off night, or just the particular waitress we had. We ordered drinks and appetizers, but then it took a solid 30 minutes before we had to waive down another waitress to get a drink. The wait for food was a bit longer than usual as well but I'm not as bothered as I am by the service."

  • "We had been looking forward to our get together and found out that there were vegetarian options for our group. When we came, it felt like the folks who served us were inattentive and unprofessional. "

  • "I came here with a group if 8 to celebrate my hysbsnd's birthday. We were seated in a corner facing the wall when we asked to sit near the window. A bar blocked us from the rest of the restaurant. We waited 25 minutes for the server to take our order. We waited 30 minutes between courses for the food to arrive. We asked fir our children's meals to arrive first. They came last when the kids were falling asleep at the table. I ordered the Paella, which arrived luke warm with an over cooked lobster tail and extremely salty. I tried to send it back but the server never showed up until the end of the meal again. The waiter never came to check on us to see whether we needed drunk refills or anything else. They had the gall to add 18 percent tip. "

  • "This place was once a great dining experience, until it fell victim to catering to the party scene on Dyckman St. The music is so loud like being in a night club, bass pumping your brains out and churning your stomach into a tight knot. I couldn't talk to my friend across the table, we had to scream. The food was once superb. The puerquito was dry. And where at one time right away when you walked in there was some elegance and upper scale ambience to the whole place, greeted by a sophisticated hostess, all in line with the higher prices you were willing to pay, now even the servers and hostess give out Welcome to the party!! Kind of silly and not worth the torture. STAY AWAY FROM MAMAJUANA."

  • "Went here with a groupon on Friday night. They were nice enough to accommodate us even though we were late. There is a fine print in the groupon telling you which items you CANNOT order. Waiter added additional items to this list which I was upset about because I wanted to try the roasted pork. I felt mislead, discussed it and the waiter wouldn't budge. I didn't argue. Waiter was very unattentive but the food was quite tasty! Gratuity was ADDED to the bill which is upsetting, i tip based on service and he was MIA most of the time. Restrooms had ice cold faucet water and toilet paper not in holders. Food was good but wouldn't recommend this location."

  • "Bad costumer service.. Very discriminating.. Herd the waiters talk among each other to watch us that we may walk out. Also even we reserved our seats we had wait and also got pass on by other people who just came in.. Only bright spot was the food and setting.."

  • "The food was great. Highly recommend the ceviche. Service was ok...we asked for paella with no chorizo ( i dont eat meat or chicken) and it had chorizo. It was changed immediately, but still annoying."

  • "Mamajuana Cafe is a great place for an intimate dinner. I went for a dinner with my boyfriend and the ambience was very romantic. The crab dumpling appetizers were incredible. Perfect place for a romantic evening."

  • "Every dish was on point. The grilled octopus, sweet plantain stuffed with cod fish and the ribeye was perfectly seasoned. The portions a pretty filling. The music was loud but it was after 11pm when it becomes more loungy."

  • "I went for a late dinner, but the place got busy after 9:00 I enjoyed the fresh green salad with goat cheese on crostini. I had the Yucatan Shrimp Roll, served with fresh greens. I would definitely go back and try other fish dishes."

  • "We took friends to celebrate a birthday there never having been before. The restaurant was pretty empty, but it was Monday and a lot of people do not eat out that night. The service was better than in some 4 star restaurants, friendly, concerned, diligent and charming and eager to please. The food was varied and so delicious and the portions too big but very generous. We will go back for sure."

  • "From the time we arrived at the restaurant, we were greated by a warm and friendly staff and immediately seated. Our waiter, DANIEL, was happy, funny, knowledgeable, and bilingual. We were there to celebrate my brother's and aunt's(90) birthdays. Daniel's recommendations for drinks were on point! His knowledge of the menu, especially the specials, was superb. Everyone was very happy with their selections."

  • "I came here with a friend for brunch last Sunday and it was great! We were seated right away and my first glass of mimosa came out before I even set down my napkin. They were really on top of refilling everyone's drinks (unlimited mimosas or blood marys with any brunch entree). I had the steak churrasco and eggs and they were delicious (my friend had the dominican burger and it was equally mouth watering). I was not a fan of their home fries, but the cheese fries that came with my friend's burger were AMAZING! I would definitely come again!"

  • "I had been meaning to try Mamajuana's for a while. It is a great step up from the old tex mex place in the same space. They upgraded the interior nicely, and the pan-latin menu is great. The food is delicious. We were having a rockin' time. BUT THEN!!!!! A four-piece band started to play at a noise level so loud we couldn't hear each other shouting across the table. The band sounded like a cross between the Gypsy Kings and Korn -- i.e., horrible, loud, whiney stuff. And management wouldn't make them stop. They put us in another room away from the music, so at least we could talk, but it was really unnerving. If you go and you want to talk, make sure they don't have live music that night. The food is worth it; the noise is NOT!"

  • "My family and I went to brunch here. This spot definitely caters to a much younger crowd, but the older generation loved it too. The brunch menu is about the same size as most and covers a wide range of meals, mostly in the latin category but there are some non-latin options as well. The food came quickly and was delicious. Overall a great experience."

  • "Too many times, when faced with the option of paella, I give pause to the distinct possibility that I could be making a mistake. This is confirmed when, just like a poor risotto, you get something dried out, with rubbery seafood, and a lingering question of just what is the big deal, anyway, other than the sky-high price. So when I got the recommendation for the paella over the sea bass, I made the waiter really convince me; was it really THAT much better than the sea bass, or the shrimps served in a similar manner? He assured me it was. And, he was right. Finally, the rice was served tender and not either mushy or dried out, and a generous helping of mussels, clams, lobster, shrimp, as well as interestingly seasoned chicken."

  • "Pricing varies from week to week depending on how the management's feeling for the same exact food and drinks. Hostess was very rude. Will not be coming back"

  • "I thought really highly of this restaurant but I wasn't blown away as I had expected to be.. It has a great bar scene though my boyfriend and I weren't really into it. We came here for our one year anniversary and wanted something extra special. The food was honestly fair, it honestly was overpriced. The waiter could've been a lot more courteous. Don't get me wrong, the restaurant is definitely popular but it doesn't work for everyone. Because it was the Upper West Side I guess people didn't think we belonged there or something so we weren't treated as well as we could've been. It was only an experience to be had once for us. Try it out though, perhaps your opinion might be different."

  • "I'm very glad we booked this place to celebrate my wife's birthday. We were a group of about 15 on a Saturday evening. The service was very attentive (from the hostess to the waitress). But let's talk food! It was extremely good! I had the red snapper, which was a great choice on my part. But from my understanding, the pork dish and paella were also very tasty. We had a platter of their "Latin Rolls", and while initially hesitant to try this Dominican play on sushi, I was extremely pleasantly surprised on how good these sushi rolls were (they basically fried plantains on sushi rolls and it works!!). We finished dinner just in time for the DJ's arrival, so we went from dining to partying. Music was great. Overall great time!!"

  • "It was better than fair but not quite up to good. We were greeted warmly when we arrived for dinner. As we were early we decided to have a drink at the bar/communal table. Service was slow &unresponsive when we first sat at the long communal table but improved greatly when sat at our table for dinner.. The Sangria was mediocre at best and the food good enough but just average."

  • "Drinks were very sweet but the prices were great ($5-6 each for happy hour). Food was good but very typical of Latin food. There was nothing special about this place. Also, their credit card machine decided to stop working during dinner. So the staff was instructing people to walk to the ATM down the block in order to get cash. Overall, staff was good & attentive, but this isn't a place that I'd write home about."

  • "This was my first time visiting a restaurant on a Groupon deal...and I must say I was pleased. I will try to be specific 1) Taquitos appetizer gets highest rating and portion is perfect for two people. MMMMmm ..still thinking of them. 2) Skirt steak was excellent and portion was large.3) Cornish Hen was great...My only complaint is that it was a bit on the salty side. But I know that chorizo can do that to dishes. 4) Sangria was average. Not bad and not great. 5) Dessert trio was okay. When we ordered it the waitress ( who was excellent by the way..her name was Suma) said that they couldn't add chocolate cake to it. So we had to double up on one choice ex: two flan and one bread pudding. I didn't understand that part. It seemed like we got"
