Diner Reviews
  • "If my mom had an Italian restaurant, this is what it would be like...except there are more options. I'll pass on the wider selection and order the items I'd have chosen decades ago in the neighborhood. And, a carafe of Chianti. Much of what has been lost in "modern" Italian restaurants, including quality, is still available here. I'll keep coming back."

  • "My husband and I dined Saturday night. We had an early reservation and were glad for it as it did get a little noisy toward the end. The service, Kim, was excellent. The food was wonderful! My husband had the clam linguine and I had the veal marsala. Both were amazing. Presentation was delightful and inviting. All was good to the last bite. We topped it off with the chocolate flourless tort with raspberry sorbet and were done. Start to finish - a wonderful evening out."

  • "We had a drink and dinner at Mama Mia Trattoria. We were looking forward to this as we were visiting Portland. OpenTable had positive reviews, so we made a reservation. I should have looked on Trip Advisor, where the reviews seemed more aligned with our experience. Here is what we discovered: - fancy shmantzy cocktails had no noticeable alcohol in them - they were out of all steaks as advised by the waitress when we sat down. - food was nothing special at all. No distinguishing flavor....heck, actually void of flavor - service was ok, but clearly inexperienced Bottom line, way over-priced for the food/drink quality and service that is provided. I would not recommend at any price."

  • "I don't live in Portland, but whenver I travel in and am downtown, Mamma Mia is favorite! The service is wonderful - incredibly friendly and helpful. The food is great and the wine list, while not extensive it very good and very well priced!"

  • "The gnocchi was the best I've ever had. The service was exceptional. Very professional, friendly and caring. Made us feel as if we were right and home and very welcome. Everyone enjoyed what was ordered. Food came out piping hot. I would recommend Mama Mia as a must go. The ambiance was so relaxing and decor felt very Italian. Can't wait to return!"

  • "If you want good, solid flavorful Italian food, Mamma Mia is the place to go. Flatbread pizzas are wonderful if you're in the mood, but their pasta dishes are flavorful and comforting. Garlic bread is exceptional as is their lasagne. Varied menu will have something for everyone's taste. Portions are substantial but not overwhelming. Desserts, especially the cheesecake, worth saving room for. Highly recommended!"

  • "We wanted a good Italian meal for my daughter's birthday - something besides chain restaurants. We liked the décor and atmosphere. My boyfriend got lasagna and he was extremely happy with the quality and quantity of food. He hates getting small portions. I got an arugula salad very tasty and filling - and two meatballs on the side. They were so big I had to take one home. My daughter got the fettuccine alfredo which didn't seem to have too much flavor. The bread was also very good. My daughter got a free birthday dessert - tiramisu which was great. The server charged us for 3 garlic breads but when we pointed out that we didn't request special bread, she took it off the bill. Not an inexpensive place to eat but nice for a special night out."

  • "Large portions of well prepared very traditional Italian food. Very reasonable prices, good service and pleasant surroundings."

  • "We had dinner and it was very disappointing. Not enough staff for the number of tables and our waitress was working but did not have enough time. The staff was great but it was crazy busy with only three wait staff. The salads are almost too big. My lasagna was not cooked in the middle and by the time the waitress came back to check on us I was just done. I ate around the edges. My companions pasta dish was very unsaucey and it needed salt and seasoning. We got our cannoli to go and by the time we were home it was greasy and tasteless. Unfortunately we won't be back."

  • "Mama Mia gets credit for presenting a hearty, traditional Italian-American meal. We dined with friends and enjoyed the presentation and taste of just about everything. I have to admit the driving force in my decision to dine here was cannoli, and the dessert did not disappoint. Crispy shell, perfect filling. Hard to find a good one in Portland! If nothing else, skip the salads (a bit lacking in taste and presentation) and go straight for a great pasta dish and end with the cannoli. You'll leave happy."

  • "The food was fabulous! We started with the Caprese Salad; the mozzarella, which we were told is made daily in-house just melted in our mouths. My Veal Parmesan was not only huge but probably the most tender I've had in years. My date, had the Sunday Gravy, which he enjoy immensely. Our service was spot on and the ambience enchanting with all the antique chandeliers. I highly recommend Mama Mia's if you want great east coast style Italian cuisine and attentive staff."

  • "We dined on a Friday night, it was the end of happy hour so the restaurant and bar were very busy. The portions are large, the garlic bread is very yummy too. We will definitely be dining here again. Because it's close quarters it's very loud, probably the only draw back."

  • "Very crowded when we arrived but somehow everyone was seated in a timely fashion and we were seated at the actual time of our reservation by a server who seemed unruffled by the masses waiting. Our waiter was excellent and patient as if she really did't have the many other tables to take of .The food was delicious and plenty left for taking home. We'll definitely be back for more!"

  • "Ate here last weekend to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday with my parents. None of us had ever been here. We had a reservation for 5:30 and it was a good thing. The group in front of us was going to be waiting an hour for a table for 2. We all had a salad and then a pasta dish, accompanied by a glass of wine. Everyone enjoyed the food. No one had complaints about anything. They also have a separate gluten free menu that includes half of the large, regular menu. The wait staff was great. They were hustling as fast as they could to keep every table happy. Only small complaint was that it was louder than most restaurants. At the end they even brought my boyfriend Amaretto cheesecake for his birthday. Excellent. Definitely will be going back."

  • "My wife and I went on a busy Saturday night and were not disappointed. We made our reservations through Open Table and were seated right on time. We took advantage of the three course meal for $29 and everything was fantastic. Even though it was extremely busy our server was attentive and the food came out at a nice leisurely pace. A great place starts with a great wine and beer selection(this place had Boneyard RPM IPA , my favorite), great bread( theirs was from Pearl Bakery which is always good), nice sized salads, tasty entrees( I had their lasagne which was very good) and rich desserts( cannoli and cheesecake were both great). I would rate this as my favorite Italian place downtown."

  • "This was our first visit to Mama Mia's but it won't be our last. Our server was very pleasant and attentive and the food was delightful. The servings were huge, plan on taking some home (and saving room for dessert). Loved the chocolate bread pudding."

  • "We went to one of our favorite restaurants last night and weren't disappointed. You always start with the garlic bread. THE BEST! My favorite dish is Chicken Marcella with a side of spinach. The perfect compliment. Dessert is always a pana cotta. Thanks for a great evening."

  • "Wanting to give my wife a lovely Valentine's evening I made reservations for 6:30. Upon arriving we were welcomed warmly and seated immediately. The table was clean and impeccably dressed as were all the staff. The ambiance was Victorian and warm, the music was wonderfully nostalgic. A perfect prelude to a romantic evening. Service was prompt and professional. A carafe of the house Chianti was excellent with the bread and olive oil. I had Shrimp Scampi and my wife had Lasagna. Both dishes were simply poetry on a plate. Panna cotti and coffee made the perfect finishing touch to this elegant meal. This was our first visit to Mama Mia but it won't be our last!"

  • "The ambience and service was delightful. The menu was a traditional Italian menu. My partner had scampi and I had veal parmesan. Both were very good. We also had the cannoli for dessert. Wonderful. Our server was excellent, attentive but not hovering. I would recommend this's place for a nice romantic meal."

  • "Good Caprese salad, a veal parm as big as a manhole cover, and a decent selection of domestic/imported wines. Lots of choices for my veggie lunch companion as well. The cannoli was as good/better than any I've had at any Portland restaurant."

  • "We enjoyed the atmosphere, service and quality of the food at Mama Mia Trattoria, however, the portions were relatively small and cost of the meal relatively high. Not sure we'd go back again as the dynamics of the portion size and cost were not on target."

  • "The service was really fast and friendly. We got fried zucchini for an appetizer and shared the breaded chicken. It was plenty of food for the both of us, fried zucchini was perfectly cooked/breaded. The chicken was a little tough but overall great with the red sauce it was smothered in and our wine paired beautifully with dinner."

  • "I am severely allergic to dairy and gluten and have always been nervous when dining out because of it. The staff at Mama Mia Trattoria was amazing in accommodating my dietary needs and made me feel safe and care-free in eating a delicious meal. My boyfriend who does not have dietary restrictions was also very satisfied with his meal and we will absolutely be dining there again!"

  • "Went here for my 22 year old son's birthday because it is his favorite Italian restaurant and now it is mine. Great classic ambiance with dark woods and chandeliers. Service was excellent, patient and very attentive. They filled our glasses, removed dishes the instant they were empty, asked us if everything was ok several times and brought us a free dessert for my son. The food was really good so much so that i left way too full. The sunday gravy was amazing with hearty sauce and three kinds of meat, The clam linguine also great, Squash ravioli that was just OK. This is a place that you go when you want a great experience and can count on great service. They actually act like they care whether or not you come back again."

  • "Missing the east coast Italian food on every corner in NJ when I moved to Portland, Mama Mia's has been a lifesaver. I also discovered they have a "Family Room" reserved for small groups ($300 minimum), but a great option if you are having a group with dinner and wine; it's not hard to get to $300.00. Staff went our of their way to accomodate us and some special considerations we had for a small group and even allowed in in the Living Room without a reservation. It was an awesome experience as usual. Also great for lunch with smaller but ample portions. Highly recommended."

She couldn't stop talking about how much she loved your restaurant, and the food was truly excellent... Which means that I can take credit for recommending it. :-)"
