Diner Reviews
  • "Great Southern cooking. Best fried chicken in town. Always tasty and reasonably priced. Mama Kim's is an undiscovered treasure of great food, excellent service and nice entertainment on the weekends."

  • "Very well priced gourmet food with appetizers that can make a light meal. Our favorites are the lamb or blackened cartish sliders and the smoked salmon entree. Dessert are delicous and large and can be shared."

  • "We recently dined here for my husband's birthday. We had a party of 13 for brunch. Everyone loved their food and the jazz band. I would highly recommend this place for brunch. Delicious food and beautiful ambiance. We will definitely dine here again!"

  • "Great little restaurant; excellent food and fun entertainment."

  • "Or course we took our out-of-town guest to Mama Kim's, as it is a favorite of ours. Loved dinner! Quality is consistent, and we appreciate it that Mama Kim adds new specials but doesn't dump some of the old favorites. The ribs and the scallops, and the cornbread, of course, were hits, and our guest was impressed by the live music, too."

  • "Would never know this place was a restaurant if you weren't "looking" for it.....but once you walk in, the energy of the live band and great serivice made this dining experience something to remember. Not to mention the food was A++"

  • "Great spot and the servers took care of us. But they had an awful, loud band playing inside that would have made the experience terrible if they hasn't let us sit outside"

  • "Whenever I'm making late Valentine's Day reservations, especially somewhere with a set menu, I'm always afraid the last few tables set will get the leftover, cold food, awful service and a grumbling host staff just waiting to go home. None of these were issues at Mama Kim's. The host and wait staff were friendly with beaming smiles and our waiter offered a number of great wine pairings for our meal. We started with a lobster consomme, which was simply divine, followed by a grilled asparagus salad under a poached egg, with both of us choosing the Filet of Beef with Bernaise, Brussel Sprouts and Truffled Pomme Frites. Every last bite was better than the last. The only thing better than the food was the live Blues band - absolutely incredible."

  • "My girlfriend and I went here on Valentine's day, it was a pricey 3 course meal only night but it was worth it. Everything was delicious. There were a lot of older couples having a great time dancing to the live band. The band was great, they were playing Marvin Gaye and some MoTown hits. My girlfriend left her phone there and the staff was quick to collect and hold it for us until we could circle back. This was our first time there, we'll have to check it out again on a non-holiday, I hear they have a solid brunch."

  • "What a disappointing Valentine's dinner. The loud band took away any possible ambiance. The service was very lackluster and the food was bland. A one star event and we will not return."

  • "Our experience was so great, that we will definitely come back. It started with the staff--greeted us with smiles & exuberance, & remained attentive & focused on our needs for the entire meal. The food met the challenge, with cool appetizers (enough to whet one's appetite, without filling you up), to the main course and dessert. We had a party of 6, drove up in a limo, had wine and cheese in the art gallery adjoining, were escorted to our table, dined and danced, all with smiles on our faces, and heads nodding with the conviction to return and spread the word...That is why this will not be the best kept secret for long....Kudos to the staff, to the chef and to Mama Kim, who did not let one plate go out without her approval. Robert"

  • "We come back here again and again. Mama Kim's has a vibe that is great for a casual dinner or something special. It's nice to be able to go to a Second Saturday showing at the Temporary Contemporary and then join friends at Mama Kim's. We ike their offerings on "Thirsty Thursdays," and I'm convinced they have the best Sangria in town. On Valentine's Day, I took my sweetie out there, along with friends who had never been there. The tables had black tablecloths with red flowers...very classy and more formal. Each course of the prix fix dinner was impressive. We have never been disappointed. Everything we've tried has been top notch. I had duck this time, and I loved it. It was so tender and delicious. We will keep returning to Mama Kim's."

  • "Fried chicken way to much batter and overcooked..salads ordinary but for 5 bucks on Thursday what do you expect, strange wine list with not much explanation from waiter, fish special was excellent, room needs decor and energy..Thursday, probably the night not to go but was my wives birthday and that's why we chose that..no acknowledgement of birthday as indicated on Open Table..we have been at several catered events by Mama Kim, so we expected more."

  • "The four of us had a great dinner with very good service from the servers, especially Leilani, and the background music was excellent. I have heard complaints of the music being too loud, but tonight there were a guitarist plus Phil the vocalist who were joined later by a keyboard. The music could not have been better. We had fried chicken and baby back ribs and all were excellent. All of us had a great time, the place was about 1/2 to 2/3 full, it was raining hard, but the atmosphere inside was perfect this evening."

  • "Very good food. Lots of small plates to choose from with generous portions. The entrees are rather expensive, so we went with small plates. They are arranged beautifully and the food is very creative and tasty. They also have $5 specials on Thursday evenings, including select glasses of wine. It's a large space, somewhat industrial-looking and can be a bit noisy because there is nothing to absorb the sound, but it's very pleasant and casual, fresh flowers on the tables. It's off the beaten track but in a complex with a theatre and art gallery, so if you are going to one of those, it's a convenient place to dine."

  • "We attended Mama Kim's "Spoto Wines Dinner" this week. The wines were delightful, the service was first-rate, and the five-course meal was spectacular! Chef Brad Morris and his staff really outdid themselves on this evening: California cuisine at its best. It was probably the best meal I've had in Sacramento...and I've lived in the area for over 40 years. Kudos all around."

  • "Everything we ordered was VERY GOOD. My friend ordered the special of Tuna Steak. The way it was cooked, it was the most succulent piece of fish I've ever had. Really amazing. I ordered the Fried Eggplat with Smoked Mozzarella and Louisiana Lamb Sliders with Sweet Potato Chips. Both of which were very good. And the Chips, fantastically thin and crisp. A very good meal."

  • "This is an undiscovered gem...great food, friendly service and more. We had the braised beef ribs and the swordfish. Everything about the food was perfect - the veggies, flavors, entree preparation, etc. Oh, we also added the mac n cheese...and wow! Gotta try that! The SUPER bonus to Mama Kim's on the weekend is the wonderful music. Guitar and keyboard with a singer who has a great voice...and they have a surprising repertoire. We've been here before, brought friends this time, and will be back - with more friends! Thank you."

  • "We had an excellent dinner with great service. The short ribs I ordered were mouthwatering good and my two companions loved their steaks. Can't beat this restaurant for top quality food and service for the price. It may not be perfect everytime we visit, but it comes pretty close."

  • "The food is consistently good. Ambience is fantastic with great musicians. The service is fair at best - all of the servers need training. While not rude, the level of service doesn't match the rest of the restaurant or the prices."

  • "We took a friend out to celebrate her college graduation. Service and food were very good. The portions of the appetizers were enough to share. We had the eggplant and the cheese plate to start for three of us. I was full before the meal came. Two of us ordered the BBQ ribs. They were tasty but very tough. My wife had the fish special "swordfish" which was excellent. We will go back to try other items on the menu."

  • "I selected Mama Kims to celebrate my husband's birthday; we had a wonderful dining experience. The food was exellent, we had the ribeye and halibut. Our waiter was attentive to detail, helpful when ordering and his service was noteworthy. We also enjoyed the live music, the vocalist had a strong and entertaining manner that highlighted the evening. We most certainly we recommend to our friends and will return!"

  • "My girlfriend and I read about this place in a review and decided to try it before going to the theater. Found it to be in an area of hopeful gentrification in North Sacramento. The interior is minimalist, but warm. Our server was friendly and attentive. As starters we had the macaroni and cheese with broccoli and chanterelles. We also had them bring us a couple of pieces of jalapeño cornbread with red chili honey butter. Both of these dishes were delicious. In fact, a couple could split a salad, have some of the mac 'n cheese, have a piece of corn bread and feel very satisfied. We had the rib eye and fried chicken. Both very good! Glad we were adventurous and found this new treat."

  • "While the food is generally very good for the price points, our meal had some clear misses. The broccoli in the macaroni and cheese was like a wood branch. It made eating the delicious macaroni difficult and the broccoli impossible to enjoy. The baby back ribs, though flavorful, were quite fatty. The coleslaw on this offering and the jalapeño corn bread were very good. Overall we enjoyed our meal and will probably return."

  • "I treated my husband to a birthday dinner last Saturday. The restaurant has an intimate, romantic setting. The entertainment was a jazzy singer and guitar player. They were the perfect fit for us as we sang along with the familiar tunes. I am a big critic of salads and the pomegranate seed and greens salad was one of the best I've had. The dressing was outstanding. Since the fried chicken was recommended, I ordered it. I'm a Lifetime Weight Watcher member and I usually take half of my meal home. That didn't happen that night! Along with the chicken came mashed potatoes and the best spinach recipe ever. I wanted to lick the plate. The waiter was extremely attentive and friendly."
