Diner Reviews
  • "This is a lovely restaurant to walk or take a cab too, but be forewarned if you want to drive and park! We spent over 20 minutes hunting for a parking spot, and finally found one a half mile away, down a pretty steep hill. The restaurant was quite understanding about why we were late for our reservation, and the food and service almost made up for it. Would come again- via cab."

  • "Good Levantine (Syrian/Lebanese) food for DC standards, but like most other Lebanese restaurants in this city, it doesn't hold a match to what Los Angeles has to offer. Nice ambiance and good food compared to other Lebanese restaurants in the city."

  • "Great service, great food, enjoyed the portion size (general US portions I find too large), nice ambiance & reasonable price. I had the mix grill, the two others at my table had the lamb & okra stew & the lamb chop. Tried everything, all tasted clean and high quality."

  • "We went to mama ayesha's for my husband's birthday and brought another family along with us at the last minute. The restaurant quickly accommodated our larger party - We had a total of 9 people, with 5 kids 5 and under. The restaurant was loud and lively enough to drown out the kids live voices, so we didn't feel guilty for ruining anyone's dinner. The food was outstanding, as always, and the service could not have been better. Very attentive and pleasant wait staff. They do not specifically cater to kids but our kids love the food and like the restaurant."

  • "We had high expectations of this restaurant since my niece recommended to us. But everything was a disappointment from service to food. We went there on sunday for lunch. The server was not very enthusiastic about serving us. The two good items on the menu that we liked were finished. I don't know what that means. When customer order something from the menu you are supposed to make it for them. The other food we had seemed like the leftovers from the previous night. They were not fresh. Your entrees are not money's worth since all you serve is one meat item and one carb. There was no salad or bread or anything. I still don't understand who are these people who gave you good reviews."

  • "Excellent! I have been meaning to stop in here ever since the blizzard of '09. It took 5 years, but i made it in tonight. The wait was well worth it! I truly should have come in much sooner. Everything was perfect; from the service to the food to crowd. I not only recommend you go, i URGE you to go. Just bring your appetite.."

  • "Having sampled the middle eastern options around this area I would certainly say Mamas is better then most. The staff was very friendly. Good food options (we ate with a friend who has a gluten allergy). The staple dishes were good (hummos, baba ganoush, stuffed grape leaves). Their lamb and whole chicken dishes made the night. Fall off the bone meat, great flavors! A solid choice for big parties."

  • "Mama Ayesha's combines the best of tradition with chic urban environment. The decor is sultry and lends itself to a girl/guy night out as well as a romantic evening. The staff does an exceptional job of working with special requests as well as provides prompt service."

  • "$16 for a plate of rice? This is one of the more expensive Middle Eastern restaurants in the area and I can't see why. I can get better food with more options at half the price...delivered. No wonder the place was empty."

  • "The wait staff was great at recommending different dishes to try. They ere very friendly and attentive, and we loved trying new foods. The place was hopping with lively groups, energetic conversation and happy customers. We included ourselves in that category."

  • "I go to this restaurant regularly as it is one of my favorites in the neighborhood. My sister and her family were visiting and we had dinner there, with three-year-old twins, on a Thursday night. Restaurant staff was very friendly, even to the children, and the food, as usual, was very good."

  • "The chicken tauk was very spicy and dry. The humus was just OK. The baklava had an after taste and was also dry."

  • "This was our second visit, having found a place that does lamb well for me and does a good vegan dish for my wife. We had a good experience and tasted wine from the Mideast. The evening was unremarkable until we received the check that included a $3.50 charge for extra cheese. The menu stated the charge as $1.50. The server pointed out that the $1.50 was for another type of salad, not the one we shared. After some back and forth, the bill was changed to reflect the $1.50 price. As experienced dinners, we were surprised at the time it took to resolve this very minor issue. A more customer friendly approach would have been to write off the $3.50 charge completely."

  • "Same good food, nice ambiance. For those who used to go when Mama was alive, her children have spruced up the place. The food is good, not excellent, but the ambiance and neighborhood feel make it a great place to take family and groups."

  • "I made a reservation on Open Table for 8 PM. We were not seated until 8:35. The vibe right up at the bar was fine and entertaining enough for that 35 minute wait, but once we got to our seats, it was clear that they were understaffed for the night and one server was taking care of one entire area. Therefore, it took us a while to order our appetizers and main courses. We heard that the Mama's Secret Spices was the way to go with the main courses, so we ordered the Kafta Kebab with that in it only to find that the Secret Spices are actually quite SPICY (as opposed to flavorful). The appetizers were all good, except for the baba ganoush, which was a little disappointing. The hummos with lahmeh, labneh, and fried eggplant were all tasty."

  • "I love Mama Ayesha's! Love it so much I try to go every time I'm in DC for business. I love the food, ambience and service. The food is SO well prepared and flavorful. You won't regret it."

  • "Upon arrival at the restaurant the door was locked. We were about to leave when the neighboring business owner said it should be open. I called and told them to unlock their door...they did. Food and service were great. But the decore is very worn and needs to be refreshed."

  • "I go to Mama Ayesha's fairly regularly because I like the food a lot and, most of the time, the service is friendly and efficient. This time a friend and I went on a Friday night (we usually go earlier in the week) and, while the food was very good, the service could have been better. My request to be seated in the dining area was not honored, even though there were empty tables there. We were seated near the bar, which was a bit noisy. Hopefully, next time will be better. I think the Middle Eastern food here is better than most."

  • "I spend time searching for authentically good restaurants, and this is my find in DC. What a lovely place. Easy to get to, parking on site...food amaing, warm atmosphere. This is not a "hip / cool place"...which generally means great design, mediorcre food and poor service. Mama Ayesha has history, charm, warmth, great professional service and delciious food. What more do you need? I will return again and again."

  • "I love going to Mama Ayesha's because I can have a relaxed meal, hear my conversation, and still feel that I'm going somewhere special. The food is great, the ambiance is lovely and the service is top notch."

  • "This was our second time at the restaurant. We were immediately seated even though it was a busy Saturday night. Waiter and staff were attentive. Suggested several items. The food was served in a timely manner. Appetizers very tasty (Arabian salad and Kibbe). One of us chose the lamb shank which was good but needed a little more spice to it. The eggplant was cooked just right."

  • "We are relatively new to DC and have enjoyed Mama Ayesha's several times. It's one of the few places around that is nicely atmospheric, with good food, and a decibal level that allows for conversation with new people! The service is always helpful and attentive and the food delicious."

  • "How could we have waited so long to enjoy this restaurant! It is superb! We will be back again and again."

  • "Items come out of the kitchen quickly and the staff makes you feel like you never left home. That's the good news. The bad news is the dishes are all uninspired and compared to other Middle Eastern restaurants, there's no finesse to the cooking. That special something extra that makes good food great is missing. We wanted to appreciate the special effort that went into making our food. We didn't taste it. Drinks were weak, appetizers were just average, and main courses were just not up to snuff. Don't know if it was an off night or if Mama Ayesha has tired, burnt out cooks who don't care anymore. Management should taste what's being preparing and being sent out of the kitchen and then decide what steps need to be taken."

  • "Came across Mama Ayesha's as we were walking by, so decided to stop for dinner. The restaurant was very quiet, but we were early. Service was attentive and friendly. we started with hummus, followed by a mixed grill and squash stuffed with lamb and rice. The food was cooked brilliantly -- we'll definitely return!"

  • "Since I moved here last year, this is a restaurant I go to on a regular basis. The Middle Eastern Food is very good and the service is friendly without being overbearing. The overall ambiance is warm and inviting. And, because the prices are moderate for the area, it is a restaurant that one can afford."
