A word from Malo
Recently awarded best ‘Chips and Salsa’ in Ciudad magazine and as ‘one of the best places to taste tequila’ in Los Angeles by Sunset magazine. Malo is the Silver Lake home to over 150 different tequilas; all of them 100% blue agave; add our fresh sweet and sour made daily in house for a margarita or hit one of our fresh fruit puree margaritas made in house. Malo is a Los Angeles favorite for not only the margaritas and mojitos in the bar, but also the food.

The Ground Beef & Pickle tacos have been written up nationally as one of the best tacos in Los Angeles and the Burnt Habanero & Crema salsa is a local favorite. Fish tacos, Oaxacan shrimp and the Lobster Diablo are our current favorites from the sea and the Carne Asada and Pork Al Pastor rule the land.

  • "Being vegetarian we found a Mexican restaurant that offered some good choices. We had a kale salad with lots of yummy seeds in it and a great pistachio dressing. The guacamole was great, especially with the soft chips. However the salsa for the chips was too spicy and we asked for something milder which we were given. To our surprise they charged us an extra $5 for this little bit of sauce which we thought should have been free. Then, my husband's regular size beer was $8 which we thought was a ridiculously high price. Don't know if we'll be back because the bill was much higher than it should have been for what we ordered."

I had the shrimp tacos that were delish. The large party I was with liked everything. The drinks are good and even the coffee isn't bad. Check it out."

  • "I came here for my birthday "lunch". I found it on a happy hour app. They have a great happy hour, but we still ended up ordering off their lunch menu. The drinks were great. I ordered one of each except beer. I didn't want to mix alcohol that much lol. ($4 red, white sangria & $5 margs) It was a mellow lunch, not too pricey either."

  • "In Spanish the word 'Malo' means "bad" and this restaurant is anything but, unless you say that Malo is badass the food and drinks were great, you have to try the Rooster, one of the best mixed drinks I've had in a long time. Love tacos, have the Pork Belly Tinga Soft Tacos... to die for, We will be back."

  • "I used to love this place but had a horrible experience during cinco de mayo. They stuck our party upstairs, which is dead/boring. They brought the wrong food, forgot to bring one order until everyone else had eaten and had plates cleared. Made it up to us by removing food from the bill that hadn't even been ordered to begin with. Disastrous night for an easy to please crowd of now former regulars. "

  • "We've enjoyed coming to Malo for a couple of years. It's consistently yummy, the service is consistently adequate, the location is superior, and the ambiance is fun, cool, not fussy. We like to bring out of town friends here, especially those who are not keen on traditional Cal-Mex. Malo's Nouveau Cal-Mex is delicioso! Staff are all nice, but there's always a slight glitch with our service every time, but maybe that's just our experience, but not enough to keep us away. It's almost charming. OH! I must mention cocktails at Malo. Super!!! Especially one with rum and horchata."

  • "This was my first visit to Malo and was recommended by a friend when I requested a Mexican restaurant with quality food. The food and drinks were amazing, specifically the shrimp tacos and red sangria. The service however was poor juxtaposed to the quality of food. While our food came out fast, we were hardly checked up on by our waitress, it took forever to find someone to give us more water and when we requested drinks, we were greeted with a questionable attitude by our waitress. Would come again for the food but am trying Mas Malo before coming back to this location."

  • "The Malo dining experience remains one of my favorite in all of LA. You have to start with the salsa sampler (and be sure to ask for the table salsa as well). The homemade guacamole is fantastic. And if you're in a group, do a combination of some of their tacos, along with either carnitas al pastor and nopalitos. The canitas in coke is great as well. Trust their nightly specials too. One word of advice: their house specialty cocktails are mostly syrup and sugar. You're at a great tequilla bar so just call your favorite tequilla and ask for a margarita on the rocks with no salt and fresh lime. No need spoiling all that great food with the sugar load that comes with their special cocktails. Service is always excellent."

  • "I love the food here! Also they've added Vegan options, so it's great for all. I would say I always order the same thing: Guacamole + Burnt habanero cream salsa and Chips + Pozole + one Ground Beef and Pickle Taco. The Spicy Cucumber Margarita hits the spot, and the Organic Margarita is so clean and refreshing. Anytime our friends come into town- this is the place we go."

  • "What a horrible experience. We were never even served after sitting at our table for 35 minutes. Not even a drink. We finally left. I stopped at the hostess station to let her know we were leaving after having not been served. She then asked us to WAIT for a manager. At this point it was nearing 9 pm and if we wanted to salvage what was left of valentines day, we had to hurry to find another restaurant. I just couldn't believe the hostess asking us to wait!!! Will not return even though I used to visit regularly."

  • "We dined at Malo on Valentine's Day. We had a reservation for 7:45 but showed up a little early. They were able to seat us right away. My husband went to the bathroom and the server came over and asked me what we wanted to drink. I had just sat down (like my coat was still on) so I asked for a few minutes to look over the menu. Immediately when my husband came back from the bathroom, the server returned and asked again- in a sort of pushy way. Almost like we were bothering her that we were taking so long to decide (we had only been there 2 mins!). She wasn't helpful in suggesting anything to drink. The entire dining experience was like this. She was rushing us through the experience. Not the experience you want when dining out."

  • "Loved the little pomegranates in this guacamole. We ordered pumpkin enchiladas and chicken carnitas tacos. Both were fantastic. The indoor portion does lack atmosphere and it got very noisy. And it's on the pricey side. Don't skip dessert, the flan is to die for. We will be back."

  • "I'd dined at Malo twice before and enjoyed the food, but this time was not impressed. Everything was overly salted, the mixed drinks were made with pre-mixed sweet bases, the Mexican rice tasted like it was right out of a box, it was too dark to see the menus or what we were eating and we had trouble hearing each other speak. We were there on a weekend but on the early side so it wasn't very crowded yet. The service was friendly but just average in attentiveness. The only thing positive I can think to say is that the chips were warm. We won't be back."

  • "We enjoyed Malo's menu, and the waitress was very helpful. Everything she recommended was excellent. We were very pleased to have a big table outside but because of the lighting, we were away from any light at all. It was literally impossible to see the menu or the food. This is easily solved and Malo would be a much better dining experience if they took care of it."

  • "Went there before a show. We just happened to get there during happy hour which was a very pleasant surprise. My party ordered off both the happy hour menu and the regular menu. The beef taquitos on the HH menu were excellent. The bean and cheese sliders off the HH menu were exactly that...mini bean and cheese burritos. Nothing groundbreaking but total comfort food which was nice. The pork belly tacos off the regular menu were good but something in one of them was en fuego so it was hard to finish. I love spicy but this one taco was nuts. Also, we ordered the white and red sangrias off the HH menu which were good. All in all, I would definitely go back for both happy hour and the regular menu."

It also doesn't make up for the deafening noise, the so-dark-it's-just-gloomy, garage like atmosphere, or the ceaseless "upselling" of $13 margaritas. Malo has competition; it should try to improve."

  • "I've never in my life given a negative review to a restaurant but this one deserves it. On a night when only about 50% of the tables were taken, we waited about 5 minutes for the hostess to acknowledge our presence, and then at least 10 minutes at the table for the waitress to come over. They got the drink order wrong, and then the food order as well. At one point a manager walked by and asked if everything was OK - when we explained that we were waiting for an entree that came out wrong, he said he'd check - but no apology or offer to bring something in the meantime. If you have plenty of time to waste, visit this restaurant!"

  • "I was in town for the weekend from the East Coast and needed a pleasant spot to meet an unknown number of peeps....the staff was super accomodating, flexible and really patient---which was necessary as the generosity of the bartender and the deliciousness of the drinks got us all a bit tipsy and indecisive.   • "A couple of years ago I frequented Malo and went back this week and the menu had changed. Everything looks great but I miss the more simple taco platters. We sat outside and it seemed there was one waiter for about 15 tables. He was great when at our table but just had way too many people to wait on. I felt bad for him. I had the chicken "carnitas" tacos and they were great. My boyfriend had the Mahi Mahi tacos and he said they were insanely salty. The margaritas were good but seemed a little off. I will definitely go back to Malo at some point but may have a hard time getting the boyfriend back."

  • "I'd been here once before for a party and remembered the food was good, so I met some friends there. The food was amazing as I remembered, and the drinks, though mostly tequlla based, were amazing. Especially the tequila old fashioned. Big recommendation! And the burnt habernaro creme salsa was amazing -- but it's got a KICK! Whoo. Check it out sometime!"

  • "Being out of towers, when we walked in we instantly thought the place was a club with a restaurant on the main floor. Music was fairly loud, but we said why not. The decor was... Interesting. Very eclectic from animal heads mounted on the wall, to velvet wal paper and candle fixtures on wall.. The food however was good, we both had the carne asada, I found the meat a bit tough, but my friend really enjoyed it."

  • "I recently had to host a WORK dinner at this venue where we flew in 5 others from the UK, having a total of 10 people. We went because the food is great, but not even that can get me to host anymore dinners there. Everyone from snobby host to the lazy forgetful servers was bad. I will give some, only SOME of the bussers credit for getting me a water after being there for 30 minutes. THE WORST. I worked in food service for 5 years, and it's sad that the restaurant owner cannot prioritize that service has to be just as great as the food. oh well... there are other places to eat!"

  • "It was very first time at Malo's. The food is amazing, but its not your ordnary mexican food. Drinks I thought where not made strong for the price. I order the pepinos for starters and they so good. I order the pork tacos for dinner and they also where very good. I ordered a side of the Refried Bacon Beans. OMG they are the best beans I ever had. I loved it!!"

  • "I'm all about mood lighting for sure.. but when you cannot see the menu let alone your food without a phone light it's time to brighten the room a notch! Food was fairly good. Salsa was bland, but the Chipotle salsa we ordered extra was excellent. My partner was served the wrong dish, but instead of taking the dish away immediately the waitress insisted that we keep it as it was "much better anyway". Yes she gave us the option, but her insistence made it very awkward. Also after we were served our meals we were literally ignored for the remainder of the evening.. would've liked to order many more of the delicious margheritas, but chasing down the servers was an unnecessarily difficult task. Not an entirely satisfying dining experience."

I'm not really expecting amazing service from a place like this, but this was bad on a whole new level.
