Diner Reviews
  • "Tables in some areas of the restaurant are much too close, constantly ducking trays being carried by wait staff. Pasta drowned in olive oil and champagne was flat....."

  • "Ambiance is very nice. Staff is professional, solicitous and friendly. Food is high quality. For whatever reason, the pace of service was very, very slow: long wait in bringing out food orders; finished plates not removed; water glasses not refilled unless prompted; infrequent attention by staff. Not at all like past visits where the service was on par with the food."

  • "The atmosphere was very elegant. The wait staff were all helpful with many suggestions and very knowledgeable. I would recommend anyone there for an intimate dinner with friends or a date."

  • "This was our 1st time there. We live in Sarasota and went for an early dinner, before a show in Tampa. Very comfortable and lovely restaurant. Not noisy like most upscale steak restaurants! Entire staff from Valet Parking attendant, hostess & waitress were all very pleasant end engaging and made you feel welcome and glad you were there. Steaks cooked perfectly. Vegetables fresh & tasty. "Grilled" potatoes are a specialty and were terrific! Dessert selection very good. We had mixed berries in Grand Marnier over Häagen-Dazs ice cream and it was delightful. Malio's will now be a must stop for us, whenever we are in Tampa."

  • "Malio's restaurant was very pleasant experience for us. We made a reservation hoping to have a romantic dinner and that is exactly what we got. The food was delicious, very good service and the romantic atmosphere was just perfect! I would recommend this place to anybody and we are definitely planning on coming back."

  • "Food was very good, but service was extremely slow (3 hours 15 minutes for dinner). Also the noise level in the restaurant was off the charts as sounds echo. This was a business dinner and it was very difficult to hear the conversation."

  • "We had a very good dinner with nice ambiance - a view of the University of Tampa spires out the window and folks walking past near the river. The food was very good. The flounder special was visually pleasing and tasted great. The 8 oz filet was cooked correctly and very tender and tasty. The salmon was also prepared well and with great flavor. We ate here before a performance of the Florida Orchestra and were not disappointed."

  • "I was thrilled to find a non-chain steak house with a number of unique menu features--the house ranch-blue cheese salad dressing, the fluffy tender skinned baked potato, multiple sizes of filet--including 6 oz. Everything about the meal was excellent!"

  • "4 out of 5 meals were excellent---steak not very good"

  • "We live on Harbour Island. This was an easy walk on a gorgeous day. We arrived at about 11:45am on a Friday which was good as the restaurant filled up pretty well after noon with a business lunch crowd and some conventioneers. The menu had a nice selection for lunch with some lunch specials for about $12 that included 2 sides. From this menu we had the chicken piccata and steak sandwich, both choosing the salad and soup. The soup was potato leek and the BEST I HAVE EVER HAD. We also shared a HUGE, delicious Ice cream sandwich for dessert. A very nice experience that we will repeat often."

  • "The worst experience I have ever had at Malio’s. The service was horrendous. I had to chase down my waiter due to the fact that all of our potatoes were cold. I have never had a cold baked potato at a restaurant, none the less everyone in our party have a cold potato. By the time the potatoes arrived, we were all finished with our meals. Our water glasses remained empty, we were never asked if we wanted another bottle of wine or desert. No manager ever came by to ask how our service was. Very disappointing for a place that I have been to probably 8 – 10 times as it was my go to place when I was in town for business in Tampa."

  • "Took my mom here as a treat before attending a show at the Straz. Food was excellent as well as the service. Was kind of hard to find if not familiar with the area but so worth it. Filet was superb. Ahi Tuna Tartare aapetizer was fantastic. Will definitely come back when we go back to Morsani Hall"

  • "Food was really bad. Steaks were tough and Burger King has better fries than what I had. I took some clients there for lunch and had to apologize after they started teasing me for taking them some place that was so bad."

  • "We were there on a Monday night and all was very quiet. I had steak - petite filet which was perfect. Very moist and tender. Our table chose to share the Mac and cheese and sweet corn. All so good and really good food."

  • "If I lived in the Tampa area, this would be one of my favorite spots to go. I hosted 4 small dinners for 4 or 5 over the last 2 weeks and each and every time it was a great experience. If I had to pick a favorite highlight, it would be the server Lisa. She was outstanding and represented what service should be."

  • "750 characters for a restaurant review? Get real OpenTable. The bad: Noisy, lots of folks not adhering to business casual (shorts and t-shirts), filet overcooked, presentation of food was awful, basically a hunk of meat alone (no garnishes, etc) on an oversized oval plate that looked like it was taken from a cafeteria. Way overpriced for the value received. The good: Nicely appointed dining area, excellent and varied wine list (we had a really nice Amarone), courteous staff (thank you Casey!), and the food was very good despite my overcooked filet. Bottom line: At these prices I expect better presentation, a quieter atmosphere, and an experience that feels special. Given our experience, the restaurant was way overpriced in my opinion."

  • "Appetizers, entrees and desserts very good; service was less than you would expect from an upscale, expensive restaurant. For me there are better choices in Tampa for excellent food where dining is expensive, but service is outstanding."

  • "My wife and I went to Malio's for dinner before the Tampa Theater. The meal and service were outstanding. The special preparation of the Flounder was amazing and my wife's Prime Rib was one of the best ever."

  • "1st time at Malio's. Had high expectations, friend gave very high recommendation. First impression wonderful -host and bar staff very attentive, quick, and martini was perfect! Then taken to table in far corner, near kitchen. Decor/table looked old & neglected, felt dingy. Not horrible, but needs style freshening. Waitress did good, but hard to hear/understand. Food - "fast food quality" salad, tuna appetizer delicious(raw tuna -perfect), entrees no visual appeal(large white plate, mostly empty), steak overcooked but good flavor, fish ok. (didn't send steak back, didn't want to wait longer) Water glass went empty for some time. After such a mediocre meal, not interested in dessert. Overall decent meal, but not hardly worth the price."

  • "My wife's birthday is Valentines Day -- Last year we came to Malio's for her birthday - for the prime rib. Much to our disappointment the waitress came out and told us that they were out of prime rib. ): We managed to have an ok evening with our group, but several people were disappointed. So, this year we decided to try again for the prime rib, valentines Day on a Friday we could not get reservations so we went on Thursday night. We placed our drink order, appetizer orders and then our meal orders. Salads came and then the waiter came and informed us that there was no prime rib. What? unbelievable! We were then forced to pick something else which ended up being the filet and it was more expensive and was the worst filet we have ever had."

  • "The setting at Malios is cozy and quiet, always a good place to take my wife for a romantic dinner. Service was excellent. Food was very good though filet was undercooked and had to go back to kitchen. We always have this issue at most chop houses in Tampa. Overall good experience"

  • "Malio's had good food, and good service. The ambiance is a little bland and unexciting. The menu has a variety of selections but some of the food is very overpriced."

  • "Our service and experience were poor. Though sat next to the waiter's station, our group was served horribly slow. Lobster escargot appetizer was actually escargot-style lobster (though good), while our mozzarella appetizer was room temperature and soggy. Our table ordered 2 filets, 1 surf & turf, and 1 chicken fettuccine. The fettuccine was easily the best. The steaks were fair, though temperatures were served to wrong people. The lobster was not at all hot, and request for drawn butter netted a 10 minute wait & butter that was also not hot. We chalked the night up as a mild disappointment... only to be more frustrated to see our server Andrew added 20% gratuity to our 4-party check. Past lunches at Malio's were fine, nothing like this."

  • "Malio's is a restaurant I've always wanted to try and I'm glad I was able to mark it off the list. The calamari was properly cooked, which is very rare. It was very tender and not chewy. The lobster bisque was very smooth and flavorful. The prime rib I had and the filet my roommate had were very good, but not great. It was a little louder than I expected, which made it hard to hear our waitress."

  • "A wedding took up the dining area, so we were seated in the (much louder) bar area. The waitress warned us service may be slow. Of course, that's what happened, but should that be an excuse, really? IMO, they should either make sure they are well-staffed to service all patrons to the experience they expect, or warn us at reservation time there's a wedding, or they should just not open the restaurant to outsiders if they'll allow a private party to bring down the experience for everyone else. Bar waitress did not seem skilled: had to ask about off-menu items, had to ask for water refills, check brought with no offer of dessert, very late bringing baked potato fixings after serving dinner. They risk losing future biz on nights like this."

  • "I could write a long review embellishing on everything that is great about this place, but I encourage you to just go, check it out and see if you can find even one reason why this won't end up being your favorite place to go!"
