A word from Maldaner's
Established in 1884, Maldaner's Restaurant and Catering is one of Springfield's finest restaurants. If you have visited The Old State Capitol, Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana-Thomas House or the State Capitol, you can imagine the wonderful celebrations Maldaner's likely was a part of at the turn of the last century and to the present day.

Today, under the guidance of Chef-Owner Michael Higgins, Maldaner's respects tradition while offering the best of contemporary American fine dining in our historical setting.

Chef Higgins features seasonal local and regional ingredients influenced by Mediterranean composition and preparation.

Heirloom vegetables, humanely raised meats and Slow Food all artistically prepared and presented.

Welcome to Maldaner's in downtown Springfield. We hope you enjoy your visit each time you dine at Maldaner's.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food is always good at Maldaner's. Husband ordered the special, a pork chop wrapped in pork belly. I had a bite. Very tasty! I had the mushroom pasta. very rich. A great choice for vegetarians. For appetizer had smoked trout which was yummy. Husband had lobster bisque which he liked. (I don't care for lobster bisque anywhere.) I had the micro green salad. Everything was very fresh. The meat was a local farm. Very good wine list allthough we did not have any. Topped everything off with the chocalate-hazlenut dessert which we split. So good. We love this place!!"

  • "We generally go to Maldaner's as a group of 3 to 6 couples. The wait staff are very friendly and efficient. The menu has a wonderful variety of tasty choices. The menu includes seasonal and local produce and meats. Portions are sizes are reasonable. I had the filet ordered medium well and it was perfect, without being butterflied. The mesclun green salad is consistently delicious."

  • "Our first visit and it was wonderful! Traditional decor, great food, and great service. My filet was cooked to perfection and very tender. The Queen of Sheba dessert was fabulous. I can see why this restaurant has been there for 130 years! We will definitely go back when we're in town."

  • "went for anniversary dinner with friends and was really disappointed with the prime rib three of us ordered. It was prepared as asked but the cuts of beef were tough and chewy. We should have complained but didn't realize that all our meals were lackluster until we discussed it later. Salad and cocktails were good"

  • "Maldaner's is a longstanding stalwart of Springfield dining. Chef Michael Higgins is ever present and it shows. The regular menu features a variety of choices that are always satisfying and every night there are several specials that keep things interesting. You won't go wrong at Maldaner's. The Chicken 2-Ways is a favorite of mine."

  • "Remembered this place as quiet and classy. Very rowdy bunch next to us- asked for intervention and waiters were helpless. Food was excellent. Service was good. Felt like we were at the tavern on a Friday night."

  • "This was our delayed valentines dinner, and it was truly a delight. The reservation process was extremely easy, the ambience was romantic and appropriate, the food was delicious, and the service was exceptional. I would recommend this to friends and family, and will certainly be going back again."

  • "To start, we shared the crabcake. It tasted so fresh and delicious! I had the sausage stuffed quail and my date had the filet. The quail was absolutely amazing and paired perfectly w/ the cheesy polenta and crispy spinach. To end the night we tried their ice cream sundae and Queen of Sheba chocolate torte...chocolate lovers dream. I would highly recommend Maldaner's for a date night or an evening out w/ some friends. The food and service are both excellent."

  • "My wife and I dine at Maldaner's about once per year. When we are ready for a true fine dining experience, this is where we go. We have NEVER had a bad meal there. I had the rack of lamb on this visit and it was nothing short of spectacular. My wife had the ribeye. The bite and depth of flavor was beyond delicious. I capped off my wonderful meal with a sundae made with their own homemade ice cream, caramel and chocolate sauce. As is usual with Maldaner's, they took a relatively familiar and simple dish and catapulted it up several levels. The atmosphere; you could easily imagine Maldaner's a buzz in the 40's. This place is truly a gem. Food, atmosphere, top notch staff and the relaxed pace is simply perfect. We highly recommend this place."

  • "So, if you see my other reviews of Maldaner's you will see much higher ratings. I am only rating this visit in this review...I would usually give them 5 stars. During this visit the quinoa had an odor and our server (who is ALWAYS excellent) was very busy, affecting the timeliness of service. The quality is that of a large city establishment in Springfield. We eat out often and prefer fine dining. We have yet to find a place to rival Maldaner's in or around Springfield. The staff, from the BEST hostess ever (who remembers us and isn't "cookie cutter" with her blue highlights) to the dining room back up staff, to the servers (especially our favorite), and kitchen staff are always cordial, professional, and accommodating. A+"

  • "Although my dinner/food was absolutely amazing, I wasn't so pleased with the staff. I set reservations two weeks in advance and apon arrival was seated in the corner with three walls around me and someone sitting twelve inches away. When placing my order the staff suggested some specials not on the menu. I choose the house filet which was incredible compliments to the chef, but after I ordered the waitress returned to the table to tell me exactly how much my plate was and too make sure that I could afford it? I was completely humiliated. My return is questionable for that reason only. If the waitress has to return to tell everyone what the prices are for specials maybe they need a menu set for the specials so this doesn't happen again."

  • "I was in Springfield for a conference at a nearby hotel and wanted a great restaurant for late dining. Maldaner's met these criteria, and I was very happy with this choice. The restaurant interior is a bit dated, but this adds to its charm. The wait staff was exceptionally good and offered great advice on the menu options. There are a number of things on the menu that you don't see at many other places ... for example, the French 75 on the cocktails menu or the beef wellington and duck confit on the entree list. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great meal in a memorable place that is quite different from the cookie-cutter offerings of the national chains."

  • "We chose this spot after looking up menus online and in windows, and everything we ordered was impressive and worth the cost. We had Shrimp & Scallop appetizer, lamb and the duck and each were fantastic. Nice place for a date and great food in downtown."

  • "Enjoyed eating at Maldaner's while attending the ACRES Conf. nearby. The organic, free range chicken was delightful. It is good to see local and organic food on the menu. Keep seeking out these from your neighboring farms. Thanks!"

  • "Maldaner's never fails for food, ambiance and excellent service. You can't go wrong. I also found the on-line reservations very convenient."

  • "The food and service are usually very good. The kitchen may have been overwhelmed by many patrons on a Tuesday evening. Wait staff was hustling and pleasant, but our table waited 15 minutes to place a drink order and then 40 minutes to place our entree order. That was a bit too long since we had not ordered appetizers, and it delayed our dinner time on a work day night. Our waiter seemed to be doing his best to serve many tables."

  • "The city streets were closed because of a parade. Parking was non existent. Our guests got lost due to the road closures and one-way streets and were 30 minutes late. The staff handled it beautifully and showed no sign of irritation that they could not get on with things."

  • "The atmosphere was great. We went there for my wife's birthday and it could not have been better. The waiter was very friendly and provided great service. He even gave her a surprise dessert for free. Food was delicious. She had the veal and I had the filet. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who likes great food and good wine!!"

  • "Think you have to leave Springfield to find great food and great wine? Think again. Maldaner's is a great place for anyone who enjoys inventive food locally sourced where you feel as comfortable in jeans as you do in heels. Chef Michael is always looking to feature locally raised meats and produce in season with a Midwest flare that is anything but plain. I had the Wild Mushroom Ragu over polenta and it was great. I asked the bartender to select a wine and the wine she picked - a Grenache - was perfect. For an informal and fun evening, join her at the bar for dinner. You won't regret it."

  • "The food was good, but service a little slow and forgetful. It's reputation precedes , but it's pretty hard to ruin salads."

  • "Maldaner's always has some interesting specials that focus on local foods whenever possible. The preparation and presentation are generally excellent. Their prices are in the normal range, Cocktails are good. It is a good spot for the mature diner, but you rarely see younger people there."

  • "Great dinner featuring a full menu of options that featured locally grown and raised food whenever possible. The pumpkin squash soup was a good opener with a fresh green salad finished with just the right amount of dressing. Wild caught salmon encrusted with pistachios and an Asian sauce with mashed potatoes and fresh veggies were excellent. And the fall apple crisp was a wonderful ending. The quiet surrounding was interrupted when a large group come into the restaurant. We were attended to promptly and no glass was ever empty or need left unnoticed. Looking forward to our next evening there."

  • "We were seated promptly, got our water and bread promptly, then waited. And waited. After 15 minutes of no menu, we were getting ready to leave when the hostess returned to apologize for the "miscommunication". We finally saw a waitress. Ordered 3 small plates to share. Carpaccio was fine though it was the thickest cut I'd ever seen and also a huge slab (one piece) that covered the entire plate. Goat cheese salad was fine though nothing special/unusual. The Asian pork belly was the best by far. They comped us dessert. The lemon tart tasted good, but it was running out of the shell. The sherry was fine. Of the 2 reservations we made with you over the weekend, I would definitely go back to Sebastian's and definitely NOT return to Maldaner's."
