Diner Reviews
  • "Celebrating a birthday with our son and his girlfriend was perfect at this cool little neighborhood bistro. Service was attentive but not overbearing, small plates of beautifully prepared tapas delivered to the table in perfect timing. The fried goat cheese with lavender honey and caramelized onions was unforgettable! And the location of this restaurant next door to the intimate Violet Crown Theater allowed us to take in Grand Budapest Hotel after dinner. Four hour complimentary valet parking provided by the theater if you get your ticket validated. Such a fun and memorable evening..."

  • "What a great place to go after taking in a movie at the vilolet crown. My only complaint is the noise. Sitting inside it was difficult to have a conversation! Otherwise a great experience"

  • "We went for our 4th anniversary. Sangria was great, not too sweet. Scallops were amazing. Also, tuna and watermelon was a great bite. These were the standout dishes, but the others we tried were good enough. If you are hungry then it may take several plates to get your fill and they add up quick. Great ambience in the dining room and overall a very solid dining experience. Ill go back for sure but ill try and not be so hungry next time!"

  • "We had to asked to be served!!! When the bill came, they had included 3 children under the age of 2 as "guests" in order to add a 20% gratuity to the bill. They have good food but they are shady with the bills. Be careful!"

  • "The lamb was great. Tender and well seasoned. The duck on flatbread was a disappointment. Service was good. Get a reservation, it was busy. P"

  • "Unique place for tapas. Helpful wait person. Dishes prepared and presented well. A little different but delightful dining experience. We went with just 2 of us. Might be more fun with a group to just taste a wide variety."

  • "We used to visit Malaga Tapas regularly, but this was our first return in a year. The space on second street is large and pleasant, and several large groups were comfortably seated. That said, the quality of the food has declined considerably. While some old favorites like the goat cheese and the tortilla were still reliably good, our patatas bravas came out overcooked, blackened in parts, and hard. The meet and cheese plate was skimpy with too little bread for serving. Our waiter was friendly, but would disappear completely for 15 minutes at a time. There are other tapas bars in Austin now, so we see no need to return here in future."

  • "Don't miss the scallops, lamb, or duck. We tried 11 dishes between 6 people, and those three were off the charts. Everyone would return just for those! The service brought it down. Our waitress was a bit aloof and slow. One dish came out 10 minutes after the others, and it was cold (meaning she forgot it in the kitchen). Drinks orders were all very slow."

  • "Went as a group of four around 8pm after driving into Austin that evening. Located in the Shopping District, we opted to walk and it was a great little area to do so. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list, offering up her suggestions on both. We ordered in two sets of four tapas, as not to overwhelm ourselves. We really enjoyed the fried goat cheese and empanadas. The meatballs were nothing special though and we would skip them next time. Service was at a slower pace but not outrageously slow, definitely a place to come to share and try new things over a leisurely meal."

  • "Have taken several dates there, always a good experience. Can get fairly busy. Wine list is extensive. Food is great and Tapas ideal for sharing. Owner always makes a point to check out how things are going. Only complaint this time is wanted to sit outside but they were out of propane for the outdoor heaters so had to sit inside. Sitting outside is great for people watching. You can see a movie next door at Violet Crown which makes for a great date. Highly recommennd"

  • "Off the bat, I was confused as to why I had booked a Valentine's dinner time at 5pm. We arrived on time and the hostess tried to have us sit outside where all the people WITHOUT reservations had to sit. Odd.... I pushed the issue and got a great spot inside next to the window as I has originally requested. Food is great, service was excellent, ambiance was awesome, prices are exactly where they're supposed to be. Their sangria is unbelievably awesome. By the time we were ready to leave, we were satisfied."

  • "As on every visit, we find the service at Malaga to be excellent and the food is always very good, with an interesting menu that I find resonates with the tapas I appreciated on a trip to Barcelona not long ago. The atmosphere is really pleasant, and even though it gets loud, the tables near the bar tend to maintain enough quiet to talk. Later in our evening, two spanish guitarists played and they were fantastic. The food on this occasion was not quite as up to par as usual. The scallops which are a staple on our visits were well prepared but a scanty portion for the amount of money we spent on them. The flatbread pizza was burned around the edges and so I was disappointed in that. But it still tasted well enough. Paying more for less."

  • "We went on a night when there was a sold out ACL show a black away. So from 6-8pm, the place was crushed. Unfortunately, the manager did not anticipate the early crowd so service was terrible. Warm Martinis--ugh--maybe just a beer? Our table and the one next to us decided to skip the second drink and just leave early for the show. Had I been the manger, I'd have redeployed the hostess and donned an apron and served the customers myself! Come for the food! Duck flatbread and roasted lamb were stunning. The place is well decorated with themed prints and all very inviting. I'll be back, certain that they'll correct the inefficiency. But if not, I won't have to worry about a third visit. Austin won't put up with slow service."

  • "I always give them a good review when I have the chance. However, we've been here around 6 times in the last year and a half. It is good food, for sure. Except they really need to update their menu. They have a great Happy Hour, $4.00 apps and $4.00 domestics, wells, and $5.00 wine selections. The downside is that the happy hour menu hasn't changed in over a year. Neither has the rest of the menu. Definitely check it out, but don't get too excited. This place will get old after a handful of times."

  • "Malaga has never failed to deliver excellent food every time I have gone. The relaxed ambiance definitely gives it the feel of a European restaurant. I have never felt rushed in any phase while eating here. This time we had the spinach and artichoke dip, the crab stuffed peppers and the prosciutto wrapper scallops. All three were great. The sommelier helped us pick a perfect wine to go with the dishes."

  • "After flying in, then settling into our hotel room, we were ready for some tapas. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our choice of a table or both, even though they seemed quite busy. The selection was creative and uor serverhelpful with recommendations. we received our orderquickly and it was attractively presented on a three tier tower. I especially likedthebeet & carrot salad and my hsband enjoyed the chicken drummies. We were very pleased with our overall experience."

  • "Limited menu for a tapas bar. Missing some of the essential Spanish tapas like tortilla espanola. The sangria is cheap and has nothing good or special about it. All in all- a non descript establishment that I will not remember three days from now and will never return to again. I'll bet you that by next year it will be gone"

  • "With our reservation we were seated right away, our waitress was both charming and efficient, appetizers and entrees came at just the right time - not too soon, not too long. We loved all of the food - everything! The gin and tonic with cucumber and lime is so refreshing. Definitely recommend for that special experience, but at the end of the night, it was pretty expensive."

  • "This is a wonderful place for great wine and tapas. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Our waiter appeared knowledgeable about the wine selection. The food was good, but maybe a little over the top. Sometimes there were so many flavors in one dish, it was difficult to appreciate the individual components. Still...I definitely go here again and again. Ambiance is suitable for either a date night or a night out with friends."

  • "We made a reservation for the first night of Fan Fest and were surprised to see the venue half full--we quickly realized why. Our waitress was arrogant, rude and absent for much of the night. I can not recall a time when our wait staff was so bad. When the supervisor finally delivered our food it was barely lukewarm and frankly, not very good. The beef was tough, and we got cheese rinds in lieu of cheese slices. We were charged a flat gratuity charge on our ticket, although our party only had 5 members. Also take a photo of the sales receipt you sign..."

  • "We had a group of seven people on a busy Friday night. Our server was slow to address the table and when we asked for suggestions he seemed a bit perplexed. Our first round of tapas came out room temperature if not cold. We were also missing a couple of dishes. The empanadas were doughy with little filling. I will say that that our wine was excellent."

  • "We've eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. I will admit that we liked the ambience of the old location on 4th street (where Peche's is) a little better, but they really did need to expand the the new location is convenient. You can't miss with the food here.....It's always creative and always changing and always a lot of fun. If the weather is nice snag a table outside....a bit quieter and more relaxing.....Inside can get pretty noisy when they are busy which is just about all the time."

  • "Lots of fun. Portion sizes could be a tad bigger. Some plates weren't even big enough for each person to have one piece in a party of four."

  • "My party of three were all "first timers" to Malaga Tapas and Bar. Each of us stated we plan on re-visiting as well as recommending it to friends because the food was delicious, the service great and both the outdoor and inside provided nice atmospheres."

  • "I had originally requested an outdoor table since Malaga tends to be loud inside, but we were pleasantly surprised (on a Saturday night, no less!) to find that we could converse without shouting. We had four in our party. We tried six tapas plates, including the beef (good, but not as good as we wanted it to be), the chicken drums (good), and the potatoes (really good). We got four desserts, all delicious: the apple thing, creme brulee, tiramisu, and the strawberry confection. All were delicious. The apple was my least favorite, and the strawberry thing has a gorgeous presentation. This is one of the two places in town I'll drink sangria. Service was relaxed but not inattentive. All in all, it was a lovely evening out with friends."

  • "Six of us enjoyed a lovely Sunday evening. We shared many of the tapas and they all were so flavorful and delicious. The Sangria was very nice (not so sweet). And our waiter, Andrew was over the top. So friendly, so helpful and funny. What a treat. We will go back."
    Dined on 10/20/2013
  • "Yes, it is a tapas restaurant, but some of the dishes portions were so small you could not share. More importantly, several of the dishes you did not wish to share as the quality was not there."

  • "We always enjoy our visits to Malaga. The atmosphere is vibrant and yet still intimate, somehow. The tapas are quite similar to some that I at when in Barcelona and while I wish they would continue with some menu items that have gone away, the selection is still excellent. We had one item that was not prepared very well, but our server immediately took it back and the item came back just perfectly and she took the item off our bill. I appreciate the care taken here and we are always made to feel special."

  • "We are California transplants and we have enjoyed some Tex-Mex and barbecue but we have been disappointed by many of the restaurants we have tried. Malaga was a nice change of pace. We really enjoyed the medium rare lamb tapa. The shrimp were great and so were the potatoes and beets. Cocktails are nice and the wine list has good options from around the world."
