Diner Reviews
  • "The food was great! I had the garlic shrimp and the eggplant. The service was terrible! They ran out of items like chicken empanadas. My friend had to wait for about 40 mins only to be told that they ran out. The servers seemed like they ran a lunch room cafeteria rather than a nice restaurant. I would never come back there again and I would never recommend it. It is not worth the money when you can't enjoy the meal."

  • "Very disappointed in my dinner at Malabar. We were rushed and the noise level was extremely loud. We asked the server about the different desserts, and she refused to provide any explanation of the dessert options to my friend. I won't be going back."

  • "Dined with malabar for the first time. Was not disappointed! Romantic, back-corner table. Courses were prompt, but not rushed. Cinnamon flan was the best I've had in a long time. Alejandra did a great job at pairing an off menu wine feature for our dinner. Perfect from start to finish. We will be back. Thank you for a lovely evening."

  • "Probably the best flan in Charlotte, and good stuffed pepper appetizer. Flank steak was minuscule and meatballs with rice were unexciting"

  • "Food was ok, not really flavorful for tapas Kinda pricey ...service was extremely slow. Myfriendis Dominican and knows spanish food and she was like well we dont need to come back here."

  • "the food is good, environment is friendly, service is professional, location is convenient, good place for team lunch, good spanish food"

  • "A great place to sit outside, enjoy varied tastes through small plates, discover hidden gem ( and affordable) wines, and people watch in downtown Charlotte."

  • "I have been to Malabar a couple of times in the past and usually leave with a pleasant remembrance. This time not the case. Starting with a really off-day for the service, it took 25 minutes just to get hummus to the table! Our Chicken empenadas had bones in the meat, and the calamari was chewy. We will probably move Malabar to the "no thank you" list for the future."

  • "My boyfriend and I decided to try malabar as we hadn't been there before and I have been interested to try true spanish cuisine. We both really enjoyed the 6 plates that we had- including albondigas, lomo, romesco, croquetas, clams, and churros con chocolate. The only reservation I had about this place to not give it 5 stars was the service- there were two people to cover the floor while we were there, and one busser. We had to wait 10 minutes before our server even spoke to us when we arrived and were seated. I suggest they invest a little more in the service aspect if they want to be more successful."

  • "Honestly I was seconding guess Malabar based on some of the reviews I read. I'm not one to go by exclusively on what other people write. I use there review as a kind of guideline. The service was great our waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu as well as their wine list. I will agree that some of the dishes could have used maybe a little more flair for the seasoning- none of the food we ate was boring. We decided on small plates and tried several. Of what we had we rank the Empanadas tied with the stuffed roasted peppers. The Eggplant Bruschetta was tasty but could have used a little zing. The fiery potatoes were good try the the sauces with them. Mushrooms were also good. Topped off with a good bottle of Spanish wine"

  • "The food was delicious. Their olives were not very good which is odd since it is a Spanish restaurant but was had the tomato bread (interesting, but good), the meatballs, jam on and queso croquet and the royale paella. All were delicious and would go back for the food. The servers were not very friendly and it felt like the bussers hovered over you until you were finished with your plate. The biggest disappointment was the Sangria, it had barely any fruit and was very watered down, if I'm at a Spanish restaurant I expect the Sangria to be out of this world. All in all I'd go back but sit outside and drink wine or beer."

  • "My friend and I stumbled upon Malabar since we were looking for a variety of small plates. Love their tapas! The squash empanadas were amazing as was the grilled octopus and hummus with pita. With some lovely drinks (get the tempranillo sangria!), our bill was amazingly reasonable. The restaurant surprised us with a gratis panna cotta for dessert that was the best I've ever had. I will be back!"

  • "Most menu items are tapas, small plates, which made it easy for us to order and try several things. They were served in a way that made it easy and fun to share. All the food was delicious! Our party wasn't into the World Cup game that was on, but we loved the Spanish music they played after the game was over. I was also delighted that they had a wide selection of gluten-free options, including two of their desserts, which are clearly marked on the menu. This was a great and fun dining experience and we will definitely be back."

  • "My manager took me to lunch here last week and I loved it so much, I met my 4 girlfriends there today for lunch! I had the salmon salad last week, which was amazing. Today, I had the chicken salad - just as amazing! So healthy and perfect size. We were able to sit outside and our wait staff was incredibly attentive. I really enjoyed Malabar and can't wait to take my husband for dinner one night!"

  • "We've eaten at Malabar 3 times. Always good food and service. We try different tapas each time, and repeat on the calamari."

  • "We had always wanted to have the paella at this restaurant and this past weekend was the perfect time. We sat outdoors, had fantastic service and the paella was delicious. Started off sharing a salad and mussels and added some lovely wine. It was a perfect evening uptown."

  • "We always have a great time at Malabar. It is easy to eat and drink too much with the outstanding Paella and delicious Sangria, not to mention the servers bending over backwards to make sure your drinks are full and there is plenty for you to snack on between courses. Already looking forward to a return visit."

  • "Went before a show at Belk. Food was nothing to die for and service was a bit spotty. For the money I would go somewhere else."

  • "Met a client at Malabar for lunch. Great location and the restaurant itself has nice ambience. Service was, OK. When asking the waitstaff what ingredients were in certain dishes, the response was, "Hold on a moment. Let me find out for you." A couple of times the owner/manager visited our table to inform us what ingredients were included in the questioned dishes. My client and I were a little taken back that the waitstaff didn't know. The taste quality of the food we ordered was a little disappointing. Overall, OK, but we were expecting to experience a melody of Spanish spices. "

  • "Absolutely beautiful waitress with an enchanting accent - she is Ecuadorean. We were focusing on relaxing with wine and we did. As to food- clams Diablo was great but we ordered veggie paella as a shared entree which was really good but certainly did not have any of the potentially exciting tastes that the many tapas could have had. Exactly what our gorgeous waitress said as we closed out."

  • "Everything was delicious - the stuffed peppers, the croquettes, the crispy beef - all delicious. Service was quiet and efficient. They let us sit outside with our dog and that was very nice - they brought her a take out container for water too! Looking forward to dining there again."

  • "I received a recommendation to dine at Malabar from a colleague when I was in Charlotte on business. The food was fantastic, and the service was outstanding. I told my wife upon returning home that it would be worth it to make a special trip to Charlotte just to eat there again!"

  • "We were early but hoped that would mean a high level of care from the kitchen. It didn't. Great concept and good ingredients did not translate into deft dishes."

  • "Very nice spot for lunch with food that wasn't as expensive as I expected. Went for a thank you lunch and really enjoyed the relaxed but elegant atmosphere and attentive staff. Would recommend to friends. "

  • "I really enjoyed Malabar- we sat outside and enjoyed jazz music and could watch the activity on the sidewalk. The cocktails were good- refreshing and generous. The food was good as well- we had a couple of different tapas that were all flavorful and well executed. We also enjoyed a complimentary plate from the restaurant of an onion flatbread. Service was excellent."

  • "Enjoyed lunch there with a colleague. We tried the spinach appetizer and chicken empanadas--both were delicious. The octopus was an excellent main course, although the rice accompanying it was little bland. My collegue enjoyed the steak entree. The servie was prompt and polite."

  • "We had a great group of 8 for a friend's birthday. Malabar accommodated us with no problem. Having a bigger group meant lots of opportunity to try various items on the menu. The food came out at a nice pace and the waitstaff was attentive and helpful with selection of drinks or food. We even got a special rice pudding and tres leche cake for birthday dessert. This was my first time here and I would definitely recommend it for a group!"

  • "Croquetas and empanadas were awesome! We didn't het to try to paella but will return to do so. They were out of one tapa they had recommended. "

  • "I recently moved to Charlotte and I'm so excited to have found such a great place to dine. I lived in Spain for a while and I have to say that the food is really authentic. The service was also top notch, the staff super friendly and cool."

  • "The food was really good, the restaurant itself has a great ambience, but what really got my attention was the service. The waitress knows about the food they have in their menu and which are the best choices for your personnal taste. Overall I can recomend this restaurant to all my friends and visiting coworkers."

  • "A friend and I had lunch at Malabar. It was easy to get a reservation at noon on a Monday. The restaurant was not at all crowded, seating had ample space, our server was quite helpful and attentive. We are both fairly light eaters so while there were several sandwich and entree options we each ordered two items from the tapas menu. The portions were quite adequate and everything was absolutely delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed the spinach saute with raisins and pine nuts and the lentils. My companion had sauteed mushrooms and croquettes. I had expected to see ceviche but it wasn't there on the lunch menu... also I don't know that the flavors were remarkably Spanish. Aside from that though, everything was enjoyable."

  • "Great little spot downtown! Service was great, food was great, overall wonderful experience. My only drawback is that it is really small spot, I don't think a party larger than 4 would like this spot. I wish they had more outdoor seating, but again the space itself is very small. We had a bunch of small plates, the clams were my favorite. I wasn't a fan of the olives, because they still had the pits in them (personal preference only!). We will be coming back here for sure!"

  • "The server hardly spoke English and had trouble taking our order. The manager had to double check that it was correct. The paella percaudo was not good. Rice was gummy and fish was overcooked."
    Dined on 4/2/2014
  • "The two of us had all small plates. All were good sized portions and very tasty with the exception of the tortilla española, which was somewhat dry, just ok. The five plates w/ desert were more than adequate for a meal. The restaurant is downtown, so parking was a problem for us. They do validate parking for a certain garage near the restaurant. Call to get details."
