  • Public Transit: You can use the LYNX Light Rail Blue Line and get off on the CTC/Arena station and walk towards 5th street. Walk west on 5th, one block, to the Hearst Tower located on the corner of 5th and College.

  • Parking Details: Malabar patrons can park in the Hearst Tower parking deck, entrances are located on 5th and 6th streets in between College & Tryon. We offer two hours free parking validation M-F before 5pm, after 5pm; on weekends parking is free with Malabar validation.

  • "A friend and I had lunch at Malabar. It was easy to get a reservation at noon on a Monday. The restaurant was not at all crowded, seating had ample space, our server was quite helpful and attentive. We are both fairly light eaters so while there were several sandwich and entree options we each ordered two items from the tapas menu. The portions were quite adequate and everything was absolutely delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed the spinach saute with raisins and pine nuts and the lentils. My companion had sauteed mushrooms and croquettes. I had expected to see ceviche but it wasn't there on the lunch menu... also I don't know that the flavors were remarkably Spanish. Aside from that though, everything was enjoyable."

  • "Great little spot downtown! Service was great, food was great, overall wonderful experience. My only drawback is that it is really small spot, I don't think a party larger than 4 would like this spot. I wish they had more outdoor seating, but again the space itself is very small. We had a bunch of small plates, the clams were my favorite. I wasn't a fan of the olives, because they still had the pits in them (personal preference only!). We will be coming back here for sure!"

  • "The two of us had all small plates. All were good sized portions and very tasty with the exception of the tortilla española, which was somewhat dry, just ok. The five plates w/ desert were more than adequate for a meal. The restaurant is downtown, so parking was a problem for us. They do validate parking for a certain garage near the restaurant. Call to get details."

  • "as a lover of tapas, I did a little research and wandered up on this restaurant. It is a nice little gem that two of the three people that you and me had forgotten. It was my first time and a great time was had by all. I highly recommend the octopus and the trace leches cake. Most of all, the staff and manager were extremely accommodating as I mistakenly made the reservation for the wrong day. Somehow, they squeeze us in on a busy Saturday night and provided a great experience."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner at Malabar. The roasted artichokes were a great starter. The fried yucca was very good again(we had it on our last visit). The stuffed peppers were also good. A great place to go and we will visit it again. It is very convenient for dinner before an event at Belk theater which is just around the corner."

  • "As a previous 4 year resident of Madrid, I was looking forward to the Spanish atmosphere and food of España. Unfortunately, the expectation wasn't rewarded. The restaurant was cramped and loud. Food was tasty and "relatively" authentic, but not prepared well with small portions. The wine and beer offerings didn't include options from Spain, which was unfortunate. That being said, it still provided a menu not readily accessible in North Carolina."

  • "We went prior to a theater performance and let the waiter know. We then had two people served more than ten minutes prior to others, the orders for two people were wrong with no time left to recover, and one person didn't get their meal until ten minutes before we had to leave. Very disappointing. We had been there during restaurant week and really enjoyed it. This was not at all that same experience."

  • "Really excellent food experience and the service was attentive and timely as we were going to an event. We tried 2 new tapas and 3 new entrees and thoroughly enjoyed (sharing) everyone: the grilled octopus and potatoes were tender and delicious, the spinach with raisins and pine nuts was a taste treat and both combined well with the shredded ham. The combination mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp and fish in a light red sauce was fresh and perfectly prepared. Hanger steak was tender, tasty and prepared medium rare requested. A new twist on lamb chops with lemon and paprika prepared medium rare was thoroughly enjoyed."

  • "My wife and I were quite disappointed in the food. We love tapas because we get to sample so many different flavors. We tried several dishes including mussels, stuffed peppers, croquetas, steak with chimichurri, mushrooms. Each were very basic and really lacking flavor. My mouth was coated with a film after eating the mushrooms and the chimichurri was missing that fresh herby taste we were looking for. Why not cut the menu in half and spend time making better food? Our server was very friendly but the service from others on the staff was a little odd. Our night was topped off by the sounds of loudly scooting chairs back into place and squirt bottles cleaning tables. 9 pm. Quite rude and a little early to be running us out the door!"

  • "It was really by chance that I found this place and glad I did. The food is served in small portions except for the Paella (or tapas style). Everything that I tried was really good and similar to what I experienced in Spain. The atmosphere is lively and energetic. The staff greets you when you arrive and is always helpful when needed. The prices for the quality of food is more than reasonable. Try the Churrasco (which is not spanish but very, very good). The buquerones are fantastic and a true delicacy. If you are really hungry ask for the Paella for two and make sure to add aioli (or garlic cream sauce). They have a little of everything so all who go should find something to enjoy. Have a Sangria too!!!!"

  • "My wife and I went here for a post Valentine's celebratory dinner. I am Spanish, she is American. We ended up having 5 different appetizers (tapas) and no dinner entrees, of course coupled with wine. The tapas we chose were all delicious, we had fish (Calamares), pork (chorizo, croquetas, beef(empanadas), and vegetables(patatas bravas). The service was quick even with a full restaurant. The place is small and they use the space wisely. We'll be back soon!"

  • "My wife and I very much enjoyed our first experience at this small Spanish cuisine restaurant. Service was attentive and comfortable. Wine is an important part of our meals. The server, Mikel, made a very nice recommendation. I noticed some other good wine choices also available at reasonable restaurant prices. We have travelled to over 40 different countries and twice to Spain. The Paella was as near authentic as is available on this side of the pond. The small dining area made for a combination of conviviality, warmth and yet vibrant. The location, just outside the Hurst Tower made for convenient parking. The tasty tres leches was more small muffin sized than a traditional cake cut. The whip cream detracted from its authenticity."

  • "We were very pleased with our decision to try Malabar for restaurant week. Started with the croquetas, garlic shrimp & empanada. Main dishes we had were short ribs and Zarzuela (seafood stew in tomato based sauce). Dessert was churros y chocolate & empanadas dulces. All the food was very flavorful and delicious. I have been to several tapas restaurants in different cities, even in Spain. Malabar was true to the flavors in general, although, the price was higher than what I've paid in the past for tapas. Tapas portions are supposed to be small; however, for example, I remember having 4-5 large shrimps in the garlic shrimp tapas elsewhere & Malabar only provided 2. Otherwise, great place if you want tapas! Just be preapred to spend."

  • "We have dined at all of the other Conte group restaurants in Mecklenburg but this was our first time at Malabar. The setting remained us of a European restaurant. We had a reservation and a table awaited us upon our arrival which was great. The menu selections were interesting and is a reason for us to return.The service was very good - staff was attentive and interested in our perpection of our dining experience. We will definitely be returning to dine again."

  • "Went with a group for restaurant week. Reservation was at 7:45 and I got TWO calls on the day of the reservation to confirm that my party would be present at the reserved time. I answered both and confirmed "yes". We arrived at 7:45 and were told it would be 10 minutes until our table was ready. 30 minutes later and we were still waiting with no acknowledgement from the manager. The hostess only said "we are busy tonight.".1 hour after our reservation and we were finally seated. There was zero apology or even acknowledgment of the ridiculous wait. In fact, the hostess, when told the wait was long had the audacity to reply when we commented about the wait that she was not the manager and we should have asked for something if we wanted it."

  • "Had been wanting to try it, and Queen's Feast gave us a good opportunity. Very cute, quaint little place. The food was all quite good, some of it better than others. Really liked my beet salad, which is notable, considering that it has beets. Very good steak entree, with friend yucca and a delicious cilantro sauce. My husband liked his seafood stew entree. Most of the appetizers were just fair - I've had better mussels, for example. The crema catalana was creme brulee-ish, but not as good. Service was good. Sangria was a surprising disappointment. Overall, I can't call it "excellent," but I enjoyed it and will go back some time."

  • "This place is way to small! The server's can not get around the tables let alone the patrons. The menu wasn't explained, night specials, heck I don't even know if they had any. We didn't like that our server's had to pass food across the table and the food itself, didn't really have too much flavor. While the place is decorated nicely, and club music was playing, I found myself looking up to see if there was a dance floor upstairs! Our party of seven agreed, we wouldn't visit Malabar again. Sorry."
