I would not go out of my way to come to MALA at the Wailea Marriott. While convenient if you are staying at the hotel with good food and service, there are many other restaurants in Wailea that I would recommend sooner than MALA. I also believe the variety of the menu is limited in its selections and should be expanded.

Everything about the restaurant was great. We had a drink in the bar before our reservation. I can see where this could be a lot of fun. Too bad we weren't there on a night with a celebrity or two as in the pics on display. The food was amazing. From the salad to the fish to the dessert. All was excellent. My husband chose something he normally doesn't eat and now we're trying to figure out the seasonings to make it ourselves.

We reserved a table for two for 6pm and got seating on the lanai. Surprisingly, the restaurant was pretty empty even though Migrant was packed next door. Sheldon Simeon is the exec chef for both so I'm not sure why Mala was neglected. We are huge Top Chef fans so we decided to give it a shot after having eaten at Migrant the night before. Mala has an amazing view of the sunset and William was a nice server. We had the jalapeño potato and ahi bruschetta appetizers and found both to be delicious. We had the crab crusted mahi mahi and the Kobe burger for entrees. Both were really delicious. I have not been to the location in Lahaina but have to feel like this location might be underrated when comparing in yelp.

Nice spot for watching the sunset if staying at the hotel. Balinese stir fry very large portion, but a little over seasoned. Not spivey hot just too much herbs masking other flavors. Fish of the day was nice.

Labor Day weekend. Reservations at Mala for 7:30 Friday nite. Restaurant was almost empty. Served stale tortilla chips with nice soy dip. Asked for more, still stale. Waitress overheard comment that menu was different from on-line menu (no vegetarian selection) and only then offered menu with vegetarian and gluten-free selections. Both ordered the Fresh Seared Mahi. Fish was excellent but not complemented at all with mashed potatoes and green beans. Girls on vacation order dessert, so we went with the Flour-less Chocolate Torte. After about 20 minutes I asked where dessert was...and THEN was told that this dessert would take 20 minutes. SIGH. Dessert was great, but by then we were sitting alone, on a hopping weekend on Maui.

It was the first time at Mala Wailea for my wife and I after hearing so much about the restaurant. We were not disappointed. Food was excellent. Fresh, wonderful options and flavors from a full menu including a special vegan menu and excellent wine list. Matt and his team do a great job. Would highly recommend this restaurant on Maui and we will be back again soon.

The best time to go is about half hour before sunset. The restaurant says all the tables have ocean view, but I did not see how that was possible-since many of the tables are indoors. We had the fried brussel sprouts, adult mac and cheese, hanger steak and crab incrusted mahi mahi. It was all delicious. The service could have been better. The main course was brought out while we were still eating our appetizers, the bus boy wanted to remove my plate while my husband was still eating. There were only about 4 tables being served, so it was not as if they wanted to rush us out the door. If you are staying at the hotel and a Marriott rewards member(its free to join) you get 20% off your bill.

Mala was a nice dinner but unfortunately the wait time to order, be served and leave was drawn out and long! Our server never appeared so another server jumped in to help us out which was nice. The restaurant seemed disorganized and the decor is unimpressive for such a beautiful view of the Hawaiian surf and sand. We are both vegetarian and while they were accommodating the choices were limited and the actual food was somewhat tasteless. I'd go back for a drink at sunset but I'd head somewhere else for dinner.

We have been to the Lahaina location several times and assumed the Wailea spot would be on par.... What a let down. The staff were disconnected and disjointed. They could have cared less about having a single customer in the place. There was absolutely no sign of commitment to satisfy customers. The menu was sparse and all deep fried. The famous bean dip was so soggy it looked like pea soup. We walked out before they could take our order... We will go back to west Maui

We've been to Mala in Wailea a number of times and loved it! This time we were so looking forward to it and it was just not the same. It started from where they sat us the first time (closed off area where it was the 2 of us and a party of 12). The rest of the restaurant was wide open. They moved us, so that ended up fine, but there was an attitude about it. It took a while for our waiter to come over. When he did he was very nice, but had cigarette breath (yuck). The menu has been cut back by quite a bit (disappointing). The food was very good, but priced way too high (it's a resort so we knew they'd be high, but not that high). We're torn if we'll go back next year. Because it's "Mala", we'll likely give it one more try next year.

Went to Mala in Lahaina and were happy to go to Mala in Wailea as it was closer. Food was excellent but prices have increased since we last visited. Service was wonderful and the sunset beautiful but to pay $25 for parking on top of a $200 meal is annoying. Especially since we were not forewarned about the hefty parking costs. The restaurant should comp this. It put a sour taste in out mouth when leaving and will not be returning to Mala in Wailea.

We went as a party of 4 to all have the Kobe burgers. I had eaten the Kobe burger at the Lahaina location 2 years earlier, and it was one of the best burgers I've ever enjoyed. While all the extras and bun were excellent, it was very clear the Kobe patty is now frozen, not fresh. Huge disappointment. To add insult to injury, the price on the online menu said $21 for the burger. In reality when we ordered them, the price was $24 PER ORDER. $100 for 4 frozen patty burgers was outrageous, and we will never be back.

We had a great experience at The MALA this week with my family - it was our second time dining there. The staff were great - they were very attentive during the dinner and the food was really good. We enjoyed the Mac & Cheese, Beet & Goat Cheese Salad, Pea Shoot & Watermelon Salad. They even served a free appetizer - tortilla chips and organic salsa. They even took the Costco certificate for the MALA Ocean Tavern - which is in Lahaina - we did not read the fine print in our certificates!! Anyways, in summary we would recommend a dining experience at The MALA. Aloha!!!

This was our second visit to Mala and we enjoyed the food and the experience very much. The only concern we would share is that our waitress seemed very keen to have us place our entrée order, despite the fact that the restaurant was not overly busy. Reluctantly we did so and the mains arrived about 1 minute after our appetizer. Our server quickly fixed the situation so we were not in any way affected but it did seem odd; we will take our time next time we visit Mala.

My Wife and I married on Maui and wanted an upscale dining experience in a romantic restaurant, with open dining and an ocean view. Mala did not disappoint. Our waitress offered us complimentary champagne as a congratulations from Mala. We both ordered the filet mignon - a nice presentation, with delicious vegetables. Though my steak seemed a bit over cooked, my wife's was perfect. Though my wife and I had differing opinions on the food, the overall dining experience was pleasant, the view was perfect and our service staff were attentive and friendly and I would recommend Mala,.

We made a reservation at MALA, although we weren't staying at the Marriott. We saw an ad stating that they welcomed vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free diners. We are vegetarian, tending towards a vegan diet. We were seated outside right around sunset. The outside seating was stifling; ceiling fans would have been welcome. We were provided with the vegetarian menu and were a little surprised to find only one true vegetarian entree (after seeing the ads); one that looked vegan was only listed as gluten free, so it might have had fish sauce in it. We ordered an appetizer, a nice big fresh salad, and a stir-fry entree and tofu steak entree (the one listed as gluten free, but not vegan). All were fresh, delicious, and well prepared. Yum!

We were interested in sharing appetizers only, because we had a big evening planned. The choices were limited and hard to share (e.g. soup and brussels sprouts?) More important out service was limited, too. It would be hard to recommend. There are too many other choices in Maui.

  • Understaffed, very poor service.

Mala Wailea's food is good, but not great, and the service was simply aggravating. They appeared severely understaffed, even though only about 2/3 of the tables were occupied. At one point we waited for over 30 minutes for a simple drink order (a beer and a glass of wine) - even after reminding both our bus boy, and then later the hostess who happened to walk by our table. (We had not seen our waiter at all since placing the original order.) Mala prices their menu on par with the most expensive restaurants on the island, but delivers only marginal food and extremely poor service. Try Nick's Fishmarket, Capishe, or even Mama's Fish Market for a far better experience at about the same prices.

Didn't expect much, and we received much less. Reservation was made for convenience on our arrival day at the Wailea Marriott. Hoping to have a palatable meal, without having to drive. The view is superb for sunset's,as was our room. Likely would have had a superior meal from room service. One cold and tasteless entree was consumed out of hunger. The other was requested to be warmed, then I was presented with a new, yet equally cold dish? The waiter was nonplussed when I offered a taste of the dish, when he inquired about the replacement. My request that it simply be taken away, and for the bill was met with distain. A subsequent visit from a manager provided apologies, and that dish removed from the bill, without apparent understanding.........

We've eaten here several times every year since it opened. As always the food and service was great. This year half the space was given over to another restaurant with same chef which seems odd. Also, the menus was cut in half and many of the interesting dishes are gone. The fun seems lacking. Without the name, it would be impossible to know this is supposed to be an outpost of the Lahina legend.

After reading some of the reviews for this restaurant, we approached with trepidation. However, we had recently arrived and did not feel like going out for a meal. We were pleasantly surprised. As far as most hotel restaurants go, we thought this one stood above most. There was quite a wait to be seated but we were seated within a few minutes of our reservation. The service was very good as was the food. Of course, what makes most of the restaurants in this area memorable is the view and this one doesn't disappoint. We also ate the breakfast buffet here later in our trip. As buffets go, it is pretty typical. What impressed us was the price for "seniors". This has to be the bargain of the Island. Highly recommend it.

Very high prices for what you get. It's sad to spend a large sum of money for a meal and then walk away hungry. We waited over an hour for our dinner and they didn't provide bread while you sat their waiting. We will not be visiting this restaurant ant time soon.

We selected Mala due to the beautiful scenery and ambiance for our Christmas Day Buffet Dinner. We arrived at 4:30 p.m. and found a variety of great food selections. The wait help was very fast and helpful and attended to all of our dining needs. Mahalo for making our Christmas meal an enjoyable and memorable one as well!
