  • "We never miss dining at Mala when we come to Maui. We love everything about it - good food, beautiful ocean views, fun atmosphere. "

  • "I keep going back to Mala (and her sister next door, Honu) for the food, the drinks, the people and the view. Locations don't come much better in Lahaina. Close to downtown but a world away from the madding crowds of the tourist district with the surf breaking at your feet."

  • "I went to Mala on my trip to Maui last year and loved the Balinese Stir Fry. I couldn't wait to return and have it again! Still great! We also tried the ceviche appetizer which was fresh and tasty. My spouse had the seared tuna entree which was served in a delicious sauce! The restaurant is a little noisy and you definitely need a reservation. We saw many people turned away who didn't have one. Will return next year!"

  • "It was our first time here and loved it - beach view with sunset was wonderful - food was creative and really good."

  • "Noisy, crowded. More like a diner than a restaurant. Despite a reservation, we were seated in a doorway, constantly jostled by people trying to check in. Worst night of our vacation."

  • "...and I'll return to Mala every time I'm in Maui! I'm fact, it's the first reservation I make, usually on the first night in Maui. That's so I can return again before returning home!"

  • "This is our second time eating at Mala's, and both times we have been 100% pleased and happy with the experience. The staff will bend over backwards to satisfy the patrons; they are all super smart and extremely competent. The only recommendation I would make is to plan on two adults splitting both a salad and an entree. All their portions are large, two people can easily share one order and come away happy."

  • "Our party of 3 looked forward to dining here but were disappointed with our experience. Had to sit inside which was noisy to the point you could not hear the person sitting across the table. The food was fine but with flaws- e.g although the menu described an item including spinach and roasted eggplant, there was no eggplant to be seen on the plate- another person had 2 small squares mixed with the spinach we had to guess was the eggplant- at $42 per plate this should not happen. We wanted to inquire about this with the waitress but she was no where to be found. The noise level was so loud we left without having dessert."

  • "When we went in we didn't expect much being that it's small and plain from the outside-. But it all changes when you enter into it. Service outstanding. Food was fresh , quantity was perfect drinks were the best we've had salads were so delicious. Food was hot and tasted like a five star restaurant. I wouldn't of expected it from a tavern but I would return."

  • "With the majority of businesses cutting back on services it was refreshing to see that Malas added valet service, and a gentlemen to open the door for me and my girlfriend. We not only took notice of this kind gesture, but we really appreciated it. We had her favorite table reserved (it was her birthday) which is also another great service that Mala's provides. Nice to see Mark there. A sample of the delicious soup was brought to us, much appreciated! I didn't have time to buy a lei, but the friendly flower girl solved that. Our drinks, "two nenes", were wonderful, & the food was delicious & healthy. I have an organic farm here so I'm an advocate of good quality fresh food, & Mala's served it up, all with Aloha! Mahalo nui loa!"

  • "Had an excellent dinner next door at Honu a few nights before, so we were excited to try Mala. Between three of us, ordered ribs, fried chicken and the mac & cheese. Ribs were fine, chicken was a bit rubbery and no crispiness to the outside. Mac & cheese was soupy. Best item we tasted was the complimentary tortilla chips and chickpea salsa before dinner - that was tasty!! Server was very nice and the view of the sunset was good, even from inside."

  • "Mala is always an amazing choice wether you're dining in for lunch or dinner. The service is outstanding and the food is always delicious! Very small restaurant and reservations is highly recommended. Breathtaking views when seated near the window or outside on patio. Love the oyster shooters!!! Lucky I live on Maui, I can keep coming back!"

  • "Great brunch menu. If you can sit along the edge at the water, the view and ambiance is unmatched. Funky diner type feel, super casual, very relaxing and enjoyable."

  • "Our appetizers were very good, and the fish was very fresh. We would have given the food a higher rating, but we didn't like the preparation of the fish. However, we're purist when it comes to fish. Whole fish simply grilled Greek style is our favorite. If you like your fish crusted or otherwise gussied up, this might be the place for you. We had a great table near the open windows, but there are some really undesirable tables near the bar."

  • "One of the best meals I have ever been served, and I sneaked a bite of my wife's as well and it was wonderful. Great scenery from our ocean front table. Great service from the entire staff made for a wonderful Mala Maui night for us."

  • "My husband and I have always had a good experience here. Before we knew they took reservations we showed up once and it was super busy. The hostess suggested a seat at the bar and we ate dinner and had our drinks there. It was perfect. Service is always good and pleasant. Food is what I would call modern Hawaiian fare. Not the gucci over the top resort food, but simple fish dishes, salads and meats that have a Hawaiian twist."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinners ar Mala's. My husband got the fish stew with pasta and said it was the very best he has ever had. We travel all over, so this is quite a compliment. I had a beet salad that comes in small and large and added fresh mahi to it. The large size made a perfect dinner. The warm olives were amazing! Service was great! Highly recommend this place!"

  • "Although the ambiance and setting is stunning and the food was good; the service at Mama's left a lot to be desired and overall ruined this experience. When you charge prices like this not only should the food should be superior, the service should be as well."

  • "On our annual two week trip to Maui, we always reserve two nights at Mala. On at least another trip we also went to lunch there. Our first visit was five years ago. It's a small space, with a tiny outdoor waterfront deck - be sure to book as soon as possible and request outdoor seating. If you have a larger group, plan on eating indoors. The food is a treat, with some unique preparations that you don't see elsewhere. What you must plan to order, no matter your meal, is the Carmel Miranda dessert."

  • "We had an enjoyable meal at Mala. The edamame dip with chips were unique and very tasty. The fish was excellent and the sides were delicious. Loved the cocktail choices, too. My kids really liked the flatbread over the kids' menu items. We ended up boxing up their meals. Come early for a table next to the window. It is a small dining room."

  • "Due to rainstorms, the patio seating was unavailable, reducing the number of tables available for those who had reservations. The host was very conscientious about this delay and showed us to the bar and served us edamous. We had a nice glass of very reasonably priced wine and all enjoyed our dinner. Go to Mala. It’s in a great location overlooking the water and has a nice casual vibe."

  • "We ate at Mala Ocean Tavern on our last evening on Maui. We chose this restaurant in part because of the fantastic meal we'd had next door at their sister restaurant, Honu Seafood and Pizza. We were equally delighted with our meal at Mala. At first I was a bit concerned that they did not have a gluten free menu, but our server was very knowledgeable and was able to offer plenty of suggestions. We were seated at a lovely table at the water (what a great view!). My whole family loved our food (my kids hamburgers in their words were awesome), my husband and I each had fish was so fresh it literally melted in our mouths! My fish was served with gluten free flatbread which was a nice surprise. Fantastic meal - will definitely return!"

  • "Both my husband and I had fish. I had mahi mahi mad my husband had the special...opa opa. His was excellent and I thought mine was just ok. We both had salad. I had the beet and goat cheese and it was just okay. My husband had a garden salad and his was much better then mine. We have been here before. It was expensive and I am not sure I would go back."

  • "9 Day trip to Maui - and we ate here twice! First visit a Monday pm & the place was packed…we finagled 2 seats at the bar and Lisa our bartender, who was a little bit in the weeds, took EXCELLENT care of us - she really created a great atmosphere. Edamme puree to start with chips…changed my life!! OMG soo good. Coconut shrimp - delish. Ahi Tuna Bruschetta?? outstanding!! My husband was the most excited about your wine list - Edge Cab from Cali for $50 (amazing value!) Our next visit (hoping for Lisa again) was a little disappointing…our bartender this time was underwhelming and inattentive. Not quite as busy ironically & it was a Thurs pm…food still delivered. Mala was a great find and we will return for sure - highly recommend."

  • "Mala Ocean Tavern is a small, slightly crowded but comfortable restaurant serving very good food with an impressive selection of wines. Started with complimentary chips & salsa, followed by the Farmer's Kula Baby Greens salad with Maple Dijon Vinaigrette & Roasted Walnuts... fresh & tasty. We had the Balinese Stir Fry with Fresh Island Fish with Shiitake Mushrooms, Snap Peas & Organic Brown Rice. An excellent preparation with tastes that blended well together. The Avalon Seared Ahi Sashimi with the Yukon Gold Potato Puree & Shiitake Mushroom Sauce was well presented with great flavor. I will ask to substitute the brown rice for the puree the next time. The rice seems to hold up better to the sauce. Overall, a wonderful dining experience."

  • "From the first time Mala's was recommended to us several years ago, to now, this has become an absolute must every time we visit Maui. The service is absolutely exceptional - we were barely seated when the servers brought us water, and their delicious house dip and corn chips - our server introduced herself, and offered us a beverage immediately. The food is sensational,, fresh, and unique. From their take on a "greek salad", to the wonderful "caprese salad" - so fresh and absolutely delicious! They are also extremely good at addressing my gluten allergy (celiac disease) - I have never had a problem eating there. This is one place we ALWAYS recommend to our friends when they visit Maui!"

  • "Great place, crowded but in an ok way, awesome seafood chowder, great drinks, yummo dessert. Pricey, but then so is everything in Maui. Don't go here if you're looking for a quiet semi-private romantic evening. Do go here if you want to watch the turtles from the open windows and have a great time. We will return."

  • "Looking for a great local restaurant, look no further! Fantastic dining experience from time you arrive to when you pay your bill. The views are amazing and food is unique and rich in flavor. Don't expect a cheap meal but you get plenty of good eats for the price."

  • "We first went to Mala a few years ago and never miss it when we return for our yearly visit. The ownership takes such pride in their service and food, you cannot go wrong here. They have such a variety of items on their menu, anyone can find something, even my difficult vegan brother, who doesn't each fish!!! Service, outstanding as always, attentive, aware and knowledgeable. Again, you cannot go wrong! Enjoy"

The ahi bruschetta was unbelievable - as was the pink snapper! Macademia nut vanilla ice cream to top it off? Lovely! Will definitely come back!"
