Diner Reviews
  • "Food good, service great. Ambiance just OK and music out of character. Concept of each dish being 2 small "sharing" portions is clever but portion too small and overpriced. We were still hungary after 5 plates"

  • "I love this restaurant; i love the food, the location and the fact that they remember that we go often, not just because we use open table. However above all I love the lychee martinis, but particularly with Raoul making them, if he is there. On two occasions recently, knowing he was on the bar, I have asked that he make them for me. On both occasions I was assured that he had when I knew that he hadn't. Firstly because it did not taste the same, and the glass was not full to capacity, but also because the whole time I was waiting for it to arrive at my table Raoul was in the kitchen waiting for a take out order!!! Most people go to a restaurant again and again because they want to repeat an experience. Not so these two times!"

  • "To start with, the reception was friendly and accommodating. We were greeted at our table right away by our waiter. He was friendly and explained everything we asked. The food came in a timely manor. We found our choices to be delicious but considerably smaller than we would have liked. The whole experience was positive overall."

  • "Most authentic sushi in south Florida. Stellar service and staff, even better fish !"

  • "I have eaten at makoto since it's opening about 20 or so times.it is always good. menu does alter certain items(even good ones from time to time and never reappearing, example the skirt steak on hot stone on original menu, was the most affordable steak and delicious.Never to be heard of again. Now its expense kobe beef, generally not worth the price. The way this rest and others by the same owner, the food comes out not in any order from appetizers to entrées.it simply comes when ready. In theory its terrific, in actuality if you r eating your salad and you main course come b4 your small appetizers or robabto grill, food gets cold and the table overcrowded with too much food at once. I have given this rest a good review, but it needs rethinking."

  • "While the prices may be a little off putting, it was well worth it. Everything my fiance and I had was mouth watering, from drinks to dessert. It is definitely a new date night location, and is a place not to be missed."

  • "The mark of a great restaurant is its capacity to deliver great food and service every time you go, and Makoto has been doing just that over the last few years."
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "Not bad, but this resturant has relatively high prices for sushi which provided only average taste and portion sizes. Noise level became enough of an issue that we were having to yell to hear each other. The real crab used in the sushi which was noted in several reviews on other sites was tasteless. I would go elsewhere for sushi in the future, as I do not think the food taste / portions justify the price level."

  • "The restaurant design is quite bad.. Inside smells like fried food .. The small outdoor area inside the mall is cute but the back outdoor area is in the middle of a parking lot ??!?"
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "I always love coming here. This is the 3rd time in the last 2 months and it is consistently good. They have the Bento box lunch that can make it less expensive and has a great combo of food"

  • "The best meal to celebrate my birthday. Fantastic fresh fare with unbelievable attention to detail in taste, presentation and wait staff. Willie out waiter was knowledgable and made excellent recommendations and described the Japanese dishes with great finesse. Don't miss this restaurant!"

  • "The food is great! Small portions, but fulfilling nonetheless. Very clean eating. The spicy tuna crispy rice was so good we ordered it twice."

  • "This was our first visit to Makoto. Located in the Bal Harbour Shops, it is, as you'd expect, a beautiful restaurant. We had heard fabulous things about Makoto, & though the service & ambience were outstanding, we were sadly disappointed with the food. Don't misunderstand...the food is very good & an interesting take on your standard Japanese menu, but it wasn't amazing, quite expensive, & certainly not as memorable as hoped. Perhaps we had very positive preconceived notions about Makoto's food, & though our dinners fell short, we will give it another try when we're in the area. We won't, as we did the other night, however, make it a destination, albeit one for milestone celebrations, until we feel that the food warrants a 30 minute drive."

  • "This was an amazing meal. The sushi was some of the best, if not the best I've ever had. The shrimp was a little chewy, but the salmon and tuna was awesome. Try the spicy tuna on crispy rice, complete unique and great taste!"

  • "This is our third time dining at Makoto and every time has been outstanding! The food is delicious; it's fun to order lot of small plates and share. The service is always excellent. This place is definitely one of my faces!"

  • "We have been looking for a sushi resturant othen then the same old basic places that have been popping up around the city. While those restutants are fine for rolls they lack in that unique selection of sushi. This is what Makato has and it was amazing as well as everything else we tried. Looking for a real sushi resturant - look no further. "

  • "Wonderful selections that are unusual. All of the fish was very fresh. Service was lovely! If you love Japanese food, a definite restaurant to dine at! "

  • "Makoto is outstanding. The food is amazing, the sushi is very fresh, and everything has a beautiful presentation. The cocktails are delicious as well. The food is always consistent, which is very important to me. My favorite dishes are the hamachi, the foie gras fried rice, and the short rib robata. I also love how great the atmosphere is and although it is in bal harbour, the prices are not ridiculous. Two people can dine very well with cocktails as well as dessert for about $100, which is very hard to do in miami. You pay for what you get - which is superb food and atmosphere"

  • "One my favorite restauranta since it opened. I not only bring my clients for lunch, but have celebrated my own b'day as well as that recently of my 13 yr old daughter. It is hard in this city to maintain a level of quality and consistency and great service. Makoto has it all. Even for non-sushi or Japanese food lovers this menu has something for everyone. "

  • "So very happy to have found Makoto! Sushi is by far my favorite dining option and I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to the sushi I eat. Makoto has a nice atmosphere, wonderful front-of-restaurant staff and a very pleasant wait-staff. Our server could not have been nicer. Three of us dined family style, and had a variety of food -- House Salad (incredible dressing!), Rock shrimp (addictive), and various Sushi/Sashimi and Maki. The fish is fresh, delicious, wonderfully prepared and nicely presented. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!"

  • "Restaurant very proudly advertise that they serve fresh wasabi/charging $6.00/. 2 guest in our party order sushi and sashimi house special, but served 2 sushi instead. One of our guest order uni sushi that he return, because of strange spoil smell. Fish was acceptable but far from clear, pristine quality.Price and ambitions HI, but quality mediocre."

  • "Love this place. Two outdoor seating areas in beautiful Bak Harbour. Stellar sushi even offered in a Bento Bix along with wasabi fried rice, and choice of miso soup or salad. Amazing edamame, a must for your appetizer. If you are a meat lover the burger is to die for, cooked to perfection with veggie tempura fries. Always a great choice."

  • "We are regulars to Makoto. As always the food was excellent but the service and timing of the dishes was poor this time (not usually). We waited an hour between dishes as they served us the wrong order ."

  • "Love this place. Favorite dishes are the short rib noodles, Kobe beef you cook table side on a hot stone, the tempura broccoli and the raspberry mochi. I have a seafood allergy and the waiter was accommodating to it. This is my favorite restaurant at the Bal Harbor shops. "
