Diner Reviews
  • "Fun and lively sushi place in a very high end shopping mall (think mini Rodeo Drive). Yummy food & vibrant scene. "

  • "A wonderful food experience blemished by a group of extremely loud people at the next table."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "The food is delicious but the portions of some foods have gotten much smaller. For example, we shared the grouper last time and wanted it again but there was barley enough to share."

  • "Makoto always delivers a high quality experience, I love it and have recommended it several times to different friends."

  • "We adore this chic upscale Bal Harbour restaurant. Everything about it is terrific though prices reflect the high quality. The chicken salad has wonderful greens, light dressing and marinated chicken. The sushi is awesome! Beets & brussel sprouts are delicious. Unless its quite humid, we sit on the outside patio. Make reservations & enjoy this gem."

  • "We were looking for an authentic Japanese restaurants here in S. Florida for months. Moving here from the Pacific North West and me being a Japanese descent, it has been very difficult to find the one satisfied my expectations. Makoto offers traditional Japanese menu and their own unique creations. The quality of food & drink and the service were superb! We finally found the place. We live in the Palm Beach County, but the drive is worth it!"

  • "Food, service and ambiance are top of the line! Love this restaurant for a girls day or a just a me day!"
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "The service was very poor, with waiter being unattentive and server depositing the food on the table as he was backing away. We have been there many, many times and this was a first."

  • "I much prefer the outdoor dining at Makoto. It can be quite noisy inside."

  • "We found a few options for vegans but in general the food was delicious."

  • "Food excellent. Beautiful restaurant, but tables are very close to each other. Alcoholic beverages very expensive,"

  • "This has now become my favorite Japanese-Asian fusion restaurant. The unique plates are really flavorful, delicate and quite extraordinary. Fully recommended, although a bit on the pricey side, but worth it every time."

  • "The food is incredible. If you like sushi, then Makato is the place to go. Try to Kobe Fried Rice, Eggplant Robata and King Crab Handroll. Cocktails are pretty good too! Can't go wrong with this Bal Harbor gem."

  • "Food was delicious and the service was amazing! The appetizers were tasty and perfectly filling. The cooked waygu at the table was delicious as was the Branzino. The ramen chicken soup was not salty and the crab rolls were delicious as well. Great experience we will be back! Save room for dessert!"

  • "This was my second visit in about two weeks and it reafirmed my previous view. All the food was just excellent and very well executed. My compliments to the kitchen! However the service is fair to poor for such an establishment. Starting from the pretty but intelectually challenged hostess who can't convert a reservation for three people into a table that would actually seat that many people to the waiter, who in his effort to sell as much water as possible fills glasses to the rim so that one can't avoid a spill when picking them up. He also was unable to keep our order straight, because he was too lazy to repeat the order at the end to ensure that he had understood correctly. Management needs to do some serious training here!"

  • "They called the day before to confirm the reservation. When we arrived we could see why: mob scene. 1st table we were offered was right by the kitchen door. When we declined it, she immediately took us to another one - always leaves a bad taste: 'let's try it to see if we can get away with giving these mugs the worst table in the house'. 3 different wait staff offered us water/a drink (better than sitting being ignored), no-one seemed to know what anyone else was doing & after telling the 2nd two that we had already been asked, it was still a while before we got our drinks & we overheard the order being relayed in the background several times. They don't have much competition in that location, but I doubt we would make a return visit."

  • "Doesn't look particularly original from the outside, but don't be deceived. This restaurant is fantastic. My husband and I went here while in Miami on vacation. We sat at the sushi bar. Our waitress was very attentive, made great recommendations for what to order, all of which exceeded our expectations. She had a lot of proud about the traditional Japanese dishes they served, which made us enjoy the food even more. We also met the head chef, who was very warm. The food was exquisite. Great attention to detail in the ingredients and plating. I would definitely go back. Particularly loved the beef carpaccio, grilled eggplant, short rib noodles, and certainly all of the fresh sushi we had."

  • "Had the Kobe beef that I had to cook on a hot stone. Was very unique. Seating isn't very private."

  • "Everything we tried was amazing. Must have the fire & ice oysters and the spicy tuna crispy rice. The sea bass was excellent too. Our waiter was great and reccomended all the must trys."

  • "The cuisine at Makoto is on par or better than Nobu but is delivered at much more reasonable prices. Also the selection of items is larger. The nigiri is served at the perfect temperature, the rice not too compact and the rice fish ratio is very good. Try the higher quality sushi sampler with the Toro to get an overview. The king crab hand roll was the best I have ever tasted. The baked Branzino with no bones and crispy skin was a delight. The "Kobe" beef strips, albeit a tiny portion, was flavorful and makes a great appetizer. Service on the other hand was a bit rushed. One gets the feeling that quick table turnover is highly encouraged by management. Also the white wine was served in a glass that was still warm from the dish washer."

  • "While visiting Bal Harbour we ate at this great place. Lots of energy & variety of food options to choose from!"
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "The food is off the charts. The sauce for the ceviche comes in shaved ice format. It was amazing. Makoto is like Sugarcane in Miami, only 10 times better. The outdoor warmers (torches) were a little strange on my eyes, but it is rare that we need them in SoFL."

  • "Outside dining recommended for spectacular view outh South Beach. Food was creative and delicious, service was prompt and polished."

  • "Began the night with a Passion fruit Margarita and some crispy rice tuna. Absolutely delicious, All the rolls had their own special touch and flavor that made them incredibly delicious. Place gets many regulars, which is a very good sign. Ambiance is amazing, relaxing, dark but very romantic at the same time. If you like to eat outdoors, that is an option as well and its quite beautiful. Food comes out very quick so be ready to eat right away! Everything comes out as its ready! My partner and I were very hungry so that was a plus for us! The fruit toban yaki dessert was exquisite! Layered in fruits, white chocolate sauce, marshmallow fluff and cookie crumbles, ended the night perfectly for us!"

  • "The food here is the star of the show and it is a show stopper. Everything we ordered from the spicy tuna roll to the Crispy Carrot Ono to the robata grill branzino was delicious. The most interesting item that we ordered was the Japanese risotto which is cooked table top in a metal pot with a sterno providing heat. This delicious rice dish is finished with truffle butter and then served. Wow. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "When I reserved a table for six in advance and the whole company came we were surprised when an administrator proposed us to sit at the table which is usually for 4 people justifying it that they were quite busy. It was not true because I saw a few tables free and there was no rush inside the restaurant during our lunch. After asking to pull together one more table for 2 people I was refused even this table was totally free during our whole being there. All above to say how the policy of the restaurant or maybe unfriendliness of the administrator can spoil the whole impression of my very good opinion of this great place. Will I go there? It is the question now…"

  • "Makoto is the ultimate Japanese restaurant. The sushi is at par with the best if the best, but it's robata is the key reason you cannot miss it. Their short rib leaves you dazzled, quickly planning your next visit."
