Very nice surprise for my wife and I, since we thought it would be a commercial sushi spot. Quite the opposite!!! it was a real Japanese restaurant with a complete variety of excellent food. The sea bass is really special as well as the non traditional sushi sampler.
The only thing to improve is the speed of the service. We had to request many times to have the water brought to our table. The outdoor patio is terrific if the weather permits. Try the tartare, short rib scewers, shrimp salad and more. Sushi is very fresh and ingredients are highest quality. Our server was great at helping us pick what to order, although we wanted to try so many things that we ended up over-ordering. The robata dishes were amazing as was the sushi. It was such a beautiful night so we ate outside. If you are in the Bal Harbour area, definitely try this Steven Starr restaurant. This is VERY special Japanese cuisine and every bite, delightful as were the cocktails and waitstaff. I would highly recommend Makoto and cannot wait to go again.
