Diner Reviews
  • "The food was insulting with a filet mignon that tasted like a thin slice of salisbury steak and literally a can of pork'n'beans as the bottom part of the pork chop dish. The waitstaff seemed uninterested in our party of 2 table, but very interested in servicing the giant group next to us. Restaurant has a nice ambiance, which I can see will attract people, but really the food is horrible, which was made worse by the astronomical prices. I wish we would've just gone to Pono Market again in Kapaa and ate at home."

  • "This is one of the most beautiful spots on planet earth one can eat a meal. The service was OUTSTANDING!! Kudos to David the manager of the servers and the entire staff."

  • "Exceptional view and food. We ate lots of sushi, Molokai sweet potato- wow, so delicious!!, saffron pilaf- yum!!, and drank sake. Everything was exceptional, waiter was very good, took our photo and talked with us for a while- nice and friendly. And the sunset view, I can't even explain, you need to see it for yourself. That was one of the top 3 sunsets of my life."

  • "Great food. Awesome terrace foods. Good service. Fantastic."

  • "Unfortunately, another not-so-great meal here and with the prices they charge it should be nothing less then fantastic. My kale salad was extremely salty and barely edible. Our creme brûlée was under cooked and was runny. It was Bloody Mary week because apparently the Bloody Mary was created at a St. Regis years ago. The Bloody Mary was $15 and very below average. They do have a great view so, if anything, we might go to the bar upstairs for drinks and appetizers but we won't be returning to Makena Terrace after another below par experience."

  • "The view is the best thing about this restaurant. The food is fair - there are much better restaurants in town, but for the view and incredible sunsets, Makana Terrace can't be beat. Also, we found the service to be fine, but definitely not first class caliber. I suppose I expected a little more care and attention than what we received, especially considering the prices. The bartender at the bar, however, was excellent. He was friendly, but not overly so, and indulged our request for photos with genuine enthusiasm and kindness."

  • "We went here for my daughter's 32nd birthday and we don't know how we can ever top it unless we return again. Everything was perfect from start to finish. We had excellent service, excellent food and the sunset view of Hanalei Bay was spectacular. The topper was a complimentary chocolate dessert for my daughter (take note, Sage Room in Tahoe!) We could not have chosen a better place."

  • "Still living in the 70's as far as food, quality and presentation. It was a tour bus experience. Price was outrageous for the quality and presentation."

  • "We have dined at Makana Terrace many times over the past 15 years. We love the view of Hanalei bay and mountains. Sunsets are divine. On this occasion it was our last night on a trip to Kauai. My wife and I had Vodka martinis (Chopin potato), slightly dirty with blue cheese olives. The Bartender really delivered. They were perfect. Our daughter had a Pina Colada. My wife and I started the meal with Caesar salads, our daughter had the seared scallops appetizer. For out entrees we had sushi rolls. My wife and I had the Prince roll and our daughter had the Makana roll. Good flavors and textures. We were too full for dessert. We'll be back on our next Kauai vacation."

  • "The food is great without the world class view. The View is one of the best in the world without the great food. So you have both here. Enjoy. Brunch has sashimi , sushi, omelets, Prime rib, Ham, Salmon, extensive deserts. Light on bread items. The day I was there they just added unlimited mimosa's (orange, passion fruit or pineapple)"

  • "I can honestly say this has to be one of the most incredible dining experiences I have ever had! From the appetizers to the dessert, I could find nothing less than extraordinary!"

  • "We ate here for our 40th Anniversary. We had asked ( several times) to be seated with a view of the water. What we got was a partial look at water but mainly the roof of one of their guest buildings. This even though there were other tables. The service was sooty as we sat a very long time before anyone came over and even then it was long waits between water, drink order and waitress. When the food did arrive it was mediocre at best. The seafood lagsana lacked seafood and the Ahi bland. Not god for a special occasion dinner costing almost $200."

  • "Our salads, sushi, sashimi and desserts were all excellent, and the setting looking out over Hanalei Bay is absolutely gorgeous. (We have learned not to order entrees when we go out to dinner, as the amounts are always too much.) The cocktails were good but perhaps a bit uninspired in comparison with the Kauai Grill (also in the St. Regis)."

  • "Being at the St. Regis, you expect five star and you get it all the way. Overlooking Hanalei bay, try to reserve a time so you can take in the breathtaking Hawaiian sunset. Service is impeccable, and the food no ka oi (the best in Hawaiian). This is definitely on the top five list of Kaua'i restaurants."

  • "Sunsets are spectacular! Wait staff is very willing to accommodate (with patience) your special needs; their food selection and most importantly, taste, was highly suitable."

  • "Spectacular view, beautiful restaurant, impeccable service, and FABULOUS food. Near impossible to top this restaurant! A great selection of sushi rolls in addition to their full menu. Sushi rolls are generous, consider sharing. If you can plan around sunset, you will be treated to a spectacular Hawai'ian sunset."

  • "We go there for the beautiful view! It's the best view on the whole island! The food is secondary, expensive, and just good, not "very good" nor "excellent". The service is very good there."

  • "We surprised our kids with a Kauai beach wedding at the St. Regis and because we wanted to be outside, we selected the Makana Terrace for our small dinner party. It was a perfect setting and the food was really wonderful. I had the Blue Cheese NY Strip and it was one of the best steaks I've ever had - flavorful and cooked just right. The lobster whipped potatoes were equally delicious. Others had the lamb chops and Mahi-Mahi and they enjoyed those as well. We returned the next morning for breakfast and were again pleased -- the signature Aloha Mary with tiny sea asparagus garnish is terrific! While service was a bit slow at both seatings, it's really hard to complain about that since everything else was so lovely."

  • "If you are on Kauai you must go here! Perhaps the most beautiful view from a terrace restaurant on earth. The terrace looks out on the west view toward Hanalei Bay and the mountains. Stunning does not do it justice. Add to that the service and wonderful sophisticated food and you have an amazing piece of paradise. We liked it better than Kauai Grill and the view and setting transformed and lifted our entire party. A double rainbow appeared right on cue to complete the magic. Great setting for a family gathering for our mother's 75th birthday celebration...."

  • "WE enjoyed the food and the waiter was very good and friendly and accommodated us since we were running out of time with our kid at the baby sitting at Regis."

  • "Food was great, lots of selection in the buffet and it never ran out. However, service was so-so for a top tier restaurant. It was our honeymoon and I specifically requested a table along the railings when making my reservation few days in advance, but there was no regard of my request at all and we ended up not getting the seating that we asked for. I understand that the seating was request only and not guaranteed, but if the table that we requested was not available I expected them to at least let us know instead of pretending like we didn't make the request. For a $60/person brunch I expected a much better service from them. "

  • "The food was amazing and the view incredible but I have it a lower review because if you are paying a five star price they should have enough staff to take care of you during your meal. All the staff were running around and the restaurant wasn't close to being full. View is glorious and food amazing."

  • "The food was good, but the view and ambiance are why you go there."

  • "I've dined at the Makana Terrace for Dinner, Mid-Week Breakfast Brunch & Mothers Day Brunch. The food is consistently good and fresh but nothing extra special. Portions are small as to be expected. The pricing is way too high for what they offer. For example: the Weekend Brunch did not have a Waffle Bar or Caviar Bar. There were no bagels for the lox. The View is however, amazing and special and that is really what is being paid for. The service is good but not exceptional. It should be exceptional. "

  • "This is the best Mother's Day Brunch I have ever been to. The freshness and variety of sushi available was exceptional. The roasted leg of lamb was superb. There is something for everyone! The variety was endless, from Mac & cheese to Beef Wellington to seafood to decadent desserts. $$$$ but worth it!"

  • "Amazing view with great food choices. The sushi was very fresh and replenished often. The fresh seafood- shrimp and crab legs were delicious as well. The dessert selection was very good and had items made with local favorites like taro. Would definitely highly recommend the Sunday brunch."

  • "The combination of a spectacular view of Hanalei Bay and great food can't be beat. We were there with a large party and everyone totally enjoyed it. Whether it was sushi or filet mignon the food was excellent. The service was also great with just the right amount of attention. You must go there if you are in Princeville.i"

  • "We had dinner here our last night at the St. Regis. To start, we ordered crispy chicken rolls, pan seared scallops, and steamed manila clams. There were 4 chicken rolls, which were generously stuffed, but the taste was just ok. Nothing special about the scallops either, but my husband did enjoy the clams. For my entrée, I had the blue cheese NY strip, which was too cheesy and had to be removed. Unfortunately, the carmelized exotic mushrooms I ordered with my steak were tasteless. Rather than order an entrée, my husband ordered various sushi rolls, which he liked. For dessert, we shared the peanut butter bar which was absolutely amazing--light and not overly sweet. Lastly, I have to mention our server, Kevin, who was friendly and efficient!"

  • "My husband and I visited here during our honeymoon. We were seated promptly at a table overlooking the mountains and ocean at sunset. We were also given champagne, which was a nice touch. The food though... not impressed. Sushi was yummy, but our main dishes were not well prepared. I got the filet and lobster tail dinner, and ordered my steak medium, but it arrived well done. Of course when I sent it back, my husband was already done eating his food by the time my new steak arrived. All I got was a brief apology from the waitress and a statement that the chef rarely makes mistakes... so that put a damper on things. My lobster was also tough and chewy, and served sliced out of the shell, which does not read "fine dining" to me."

  • "If you are on Kauai anywhere Princeville this is an excellent place for any occasion. Food was excellent, as was the service. Views are amazing!! We chose to sit outside eben though it was windy and a little chilly. The servers and management even provided blankets to some guests to help them keep warm! Thanks to Makana Terrace for helping us celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary!"

  • "View before sundown was spectacular . Service was prompt but not hurried. Food was wonderful. Sushi was some of the best ever. Wine list was more than adequate . My entire group was blown away. Just an overall great experience!"

  • "Wow, where to start? This place exceeded expectations. We knew the view was just about as good as you will ever find anywhere. I mean ANYWHERE. What surprised us was the food and service ... most places with this kind of view live on that and coast on the rest. Not here. Our food was the best we had on the entire trip - from salad and appetizer to entrees. excellently prepared and flavors carefully melded into something special. Were surprised with a special dessert for our anniversary. Waiter was always magically there when needed and otherwise utterly invisible. Perfect. Was this meal a fluke? Can't wait to go back to find out ..."

  • "Other than the view, nothing special about this play. EXTREMELY overpriced for the quality and inventiveness of the food and very average level of service. There are much better dining experiences to be had on Kauai."
