The servers seemed annoyed and angry. We asked if one of us could share the prix fix or order something light and was met with a nasty no. A few minutes later he allowed the one guest to order one dinner off the prix fix menu but not the bar menu. Would have been fine if he wasn't so mean and nasty. Also I asked for a medium steak and got rare. Was afraid they would make it well done if I sent it back.

Took my Mom to a show at NJPAC and made my reservation with Open Table for 3 guests. The host was super nice he made us feel welcomed when we arrived and seated us right away. There was a buffet style prixe fixe menu that ranged from cold appetizers, hot pastas, seafood, a carving station, salads and vegetable sides of all kinds, plus dessert! I really lucked into an expansive and inexpensive lunch that was nicely presented and very good. There were families with children and couples having lunch/dinner however the noise was actually low enough to hear conversation across the table. I would go there again.

My companion and I arrived at 6:30pm and we informed our waiter that we needed to leave by 7:50 to attend a performance. We ordered drinks and soon thereafter we ordered an appetizer to share and our entries. We inquired about the status of our order about 15 or 20 minutes later. Our waiter said our food would be coming out soon. It didn't. We kept on inquiring as time was getting tight. Our waiter started to avoid eye contact. We then told him we'd have to leave if we didn't get served very soon. About 5 minutes later our entrees came but our appetizer. No apologies from our waiter. The seafood paella was edible but that's about it. No crustiness to the rice and the scallops were on the mushy side. Never again.

Food was just fair. The pork chop requested medium was dry. Someone needs to tell the chef that chicken francese is made with lemon. There was no lemon taste at all. The service was horrible. It seemed like they oonly had one waiter for the entire restaurant. When we ffinished are meal the waiter seemed to want to get rid of us....we had to ask for a dessert menu. By the time it finally came 15 minutes later we needed to leave for our concert at NJPAC. I had not been here in a long time and probably won't be returning for a long time.

A very enjoyable dining experience. On theatre nights, they only show a pricy pre-theatre menu which almost caused us to leave. However, upon inquiring, all of the items on that menu can also be ordered a la carte or even shared. The restaurant should make that clearer at the time the menu is presented. The lamb tenderloin and the garlic shrimp entrees were especially enjoyable and the portions were generous. Mixed drinks were excellent and fairly priced. You won't go wrong dining here.

This is still one of the best options before a performance at NJPAC just leave enough time. Park once and walk to the theater. Lunch was totally unrushed because we had planned on 2 hours and it was not the usual mad rush of dinner on a show night. Our waiter was very attentive and especially kind to our 2 year old granddaughter who thought he was her new friend.

It started with them having to re-make our drinks, one twice the other FOUR times. Used Stoli instead of Beefeater, re-made it without using ice, then remade it by shaking rather than stirring, etc. The meal....Steak Maize, their specialty, ordered medium rare came out rare, after cooking it to medium the sides were luke warm at best. The other meal, lamb porterhouse ordered medium had one cooked right the other three were well done. The replacement order came out rare, and the lead waiter tried first to convince us that it was medium rare, then tried to explain that to get to medium would likely result in well done. There were no apologies for the results of a ruined evening. Very disappointed as this looked like a more upscale place.

We like the convenience of Maize when we go to NJPAC and the food is always good with choices for all of us. However, the service was very slow even when we told our waiter we wanted to get to the pre-show. We missed it and were rushing to get to the concert on time.

Maize Restaurant in the Best Western Plus Robert Treat Hotel in Newark is worth every minute you spend there. We were seated promptly upon our arrival at a small table just beyond the bar area that was surprisingly quiet. Water and drink orders were accomplished right after we were seated. A prix fixe menu allowed us to order appetizer, entrée and dessert up front. The Portuguese vegetable soup with chorizo was aromatic, flavorful and nearly a meal in itself. The seasonal greens salad had zip. Lamb medallions with roasted potatoes and asparagus was well prepared. Salmon stuffed with shrimp and scallops was tender and full bodied. Garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables rounded out the dish. Flourless chocolate cake was exquisite.

We have now been disappointed three times at this restaurant. Each year we say we will give it another try, as it is directly across the street from the NJ PAC. However, this time was by far the worst. We arrived at 6pm and did not get served until 7:30. Another party left to get to the show at 8pm, as they did not want to eat their meal in 15 minutes. Our food, when it arrived, was of such poor quality that we chose not to eat, but rather just paid and left. The waiter isgnored us for a good 20 minutes despite our arm waiving, as I am sure he was embarrassed that we had not been served. Then told us they had a large group in the ballroom and the kitchen could not handle all the business. We have now permanently marked Maize off our list.

An excellent alternative to the restaurant within NJPAC whose food and service are not up to par. This visit was on a Sunday evening, and the place was almost empty. The service was excellent and the food was delicious and beautifully plated. Our last trip was just before a performance, and they handled the crowd well.

This place was amazing. The decor is beautiful and very classic. Table setting was extravagant yet simple and classy. We went prior to a show at the prudential center and even thou its a couple blocks from the other places to go it is definitely worth it. We started with spanish mussels which were the best i have ever had in my life. Then i had the Maize Steak(prime rib) which was just amazing. Cooked exactly to my satisfaction. Our waiter was also very good. Attentive and great to interact with. I literally can not think of 1 thing that could have been better. And as expensive as the place looks its really not that bad. Dinner and drinks for 2 came out to just about $90. I will be returning before the Kanye West show on Feb 15th.

Handicapped lift for disabled since steps to enter restaurant. Great food, excellent service, prices a bit high. Everyone there was extremely accommodating and wonderful-- even with a party going on in the main dining area, we really enjoyed our privacy in a smaller room and the noise wasn't bad at all! The décor had a nice warm Mediterranean feel in a cozy atmosphere. Nicely done. Convenience being across street from NJPAC. Tip: Good parking accessibility with Military Garage and the hotel parking. Military gates doors early, had to walk to car ramp down the block to get our car @7:30. If eating late, better to stay at the hotel above ground parking.

I ordered the lobster tails (2 tails in an order) and they were AWFUL! When I saw Three pieces of lobster tail, I was puzzled, until I realized that the tail that was split, was from 2 different lobsters! They were the size of Jumbo shrimp. They seem to re-use what they don't use up. It looked like I was eating someone else's leftovers! each time we needed something (which wasn't too often), we needed to call the wait staff over. When we came home that night, we discovered that Open Table sent us a notice that said that we were a "No Show".. I called the restaurant the next day and the person on the phone gave me a hard time. Finally, the restaurant made the correction, but only after I made a little fuss. We will not eat here again!

The food was only okay, though the avocado and crab roll was quite good. The service was not attentive - I had to get up, look for a waiter to get 2 knives and about 5 minutes later our waiter turned up with bowls and picks for the lobster in the paella. There appeared to be too few waiters for the nearly full restaurant. The paella was just okay and the tilapia was just a tad better. The drawing card is the convenience to the Performing Arts Center.
