A word from Maialino
Maialino is a Roman-inspired trattoria from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, located in Gramercy Park. Maialino captures the warmth and comfort of a true neighborhood trattoria, with a menu that celebrates the restaurant's ongoing relationship with its local family of farmers and suppliers. Executive Chef Nick Anderer draws inspiration from the Roman cooking tradition to create soulful food, reflective of the rich culture of both Rome and New York.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I've been here a dozen times by now so it's time for a quick review. This place has the exact balance - the food simply never fails, as long as you're game for Italian with an NYC twist. The ambience is fantastic - the hotel itself is a hot spot with two more bars you can wait at for your table, and the wood burning fireplace in the lobby adds a nice touch (and smell) to the scene. The dining experience works for anything from a romantic date, through a business meeting and a family get together. My only regrets in recommending this place is that it might make my wait even longer on evenings with no reservation, but hey. Enjoy."

  • "We had a fantastic meal last night, but we were particularly impressed with the service. when we asked if my wife and and could just share 3-4 dishes and match wines, there was no issue nor pressure to oversell (or overeat). The suckling pig is one of their most notable dishes and should not be missed, and the wines paired with the food were a great match."

  • "This is the second visit and we will definitely return. The egg white frittata was great as were their baked goods. The service was impeccable too. The restaurant location also makes it a neighborhood gem in spite of it being in the Gramercy Park Hotel."

  • "Excellent appetizers, freshest mozzarella di bufala I've ever tasted! Pasta portions are a bit small, but every bite is worth it! "

  • "Our first stop upon arriving in NY. Warm, bustling atmosphere, not stuffy at all. Pastas are excellent, as is the wine list. Would eat here more often if it were not quite so expensive. "

  • "This was my second time here...excellent! The food was fresh, service great and Erik Lombardo who works at the restaurant helped select a great wine for dinner. Very professional crowd with a great vibe."

  • "This is a very hard reservation to obtain, and my expectations were very high. The service was excellent, memorable. We were given plenty of space at the table, not crowded as is the norm in NYC, which was appreciated. I ordered entrees similar to those that I remembered from childhood, especially those made at an Italian American home during Lent. The bacala was light, not salty, and presented on a plate of creamy polenta. Divine, as was the roast sucking pig. One of the pasta dishes were a bit too salty, too al dente for my taste but others at my table disagreed. Deserts are a treat and not to be missed. Excellent cocktails and non alcoholic drink, large wine list, plenty of excellent choices, helpful staff."

  • "The menu was interesting with quite a few pork selections. We advised the restaurant at the time we made the reservation that we were celebrating our 20th Wedding Annniversary and if possible, could we be seated near a window and not by the kitchen. We were seated in a booth and next to the kitchen entrance. My husband who is not a red sauce person had asked the waiter since it was not listed on the menu, if he could get a fettuicine dish with a white sauce. The waiter said he would have to ask the chef. When the waiter returned he said the chef said "no." I ordered dessert and when it was brought to me lit with a candle, the person (not our waiter) said Happy Anniversary. We must say the food was very good."

  • "Wonderful location on Gramercy Park with open window views to the park and spacious dining. Had the chef's tasting menu ($75) for the table which consisted of 4 courses - family style sharing. Appetizers were amazing- subtle cured meats, delicate salads with grilled shrimp, etc. The pasta courses were also superb - black ink calamari pasta, lamb sausage with broccoli rabe and traditional almatriciana. Main courses were crispy tender slow roasted pig with roasted potatoes and cobia in a delicate lemon butter (sublime). Finally, deserts were a dense olive oil pound cake with fresh whip cream, trio of light sorbetto and chocolate mouse like tart that was absolutely wonderful. Danny Meyer has done Roma justice -gem of a restaurant. Molto bene!"

  • "The chef prepares pork to perfection. Absolute perfection. I wish I could sample every pork dish on the menu but alas, I have to keep my figure. I'll be back!"

  • "The ricotta pancakes are off the charts. I loved the flavor of the oatmeal with farrow. The server was extraordinarily accommodating since I have food sensitivities. We tried to get a dinner reservation but you can't book 2 weeks in advance and get a table"

  • "Had a very enjoyable lunch with an old friend. Even at lunch the noise level is a little loud. Generous portion of pasta, excellent as always. Hey, the President ate there last night. It must be special."

  • "Outstanding in every way. Danny Meyer really does it right. Great food, great service, great experience."

  • "this is my second visit to Maialino and it was just as wonderful as the first. they have a great wine list that starts out reasonable as well and the sommelier nailed the selection with our input and price range. the special of the evening - lobster pasta was insanely good and excellent quality. dessert was also great - the panna cotta."

  • "My boyfriend and I had a great time at Maialino, they have delicious food with appropriate portion sizes. Although we didn't have any wine they had an impressive list of selections to choose from. It was a great place to celebrate a special moment, feel full from great food, and enjoy our time together. I would definitely go back!"

  • "I had dinner at Maialino twice in the last week and, although very good, it was not quite as stellar as usual. Still, it's one of the best places in town."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "I ordered the lamb chops which were fantastic, but I was disappointed with the portion size. It was only three small lamb chops, and very little greens. I suppose they expect you to fill up on bread and appetizers, but what if you only order a main dish?"

  • "Have been here 5-6 times and it is always excellent. Food service and ambiance are absolutely first rate. Maialino is always crowded so book early. Not only is the food and wine excellent but moderately priced. Very very highly recommended"

  • "NOT EASY TO FIND ANYTHING WE FELT LIKE EATING ON THE LUNCHEON MENU……MORE GEARED TOWARD DINNER PERHAPS?"

  • "We travel a long way to enjoy Maialino and it never disappoints. What is is clearly evident is how well trained and knowledgeable the staff are, across the board from the greeters to the waiters. Is always nice to feel that you are actually wanted and welcome in a restaurant or an an airline in today's commoditized world. Maialino is a gem. Don't change anything."

  • "I have tried to cook and prepare pig liver and failed miserably. The pate and the little ravioli stuffed with chick and pig liver in the better balsamic sauce I still taste, wonderful. Hopping atmosphere for dinner and great food. Great wine selection. I've been back many times."

  • "The bread they start you with is quite addictive. Mains were suckling pig and pasta with rabbit. As you have probably read in other reviews, the restaurant is renown for the suckling pig. If you have the option don't miss it. It is truly outstanding. The roasted potatoes served with the pig are to die for. The pasta with rabbit was excellent as well. They have a fabulous wine list and the waitress provided an excellent recommendation which went well with the meals. The service is outstanding. Moderate noise give the size of the place."

  • "We had the spaghetti con vongele and the bucatini all'amatriciana both were outstanding."

  • "Brunch - we ate twice in the "cafe" and once in the "dining room." Each time, we left feeling ripped off - too much money for too little in both quality and quantity. It's a hot spot, but not for us."

  • "Rave reviews were not overstated... great food, service, wine and ambience... not much more you can ask for."

  • "We ordered smoothies and asked they arrive before our food. They had not shown up when our food arrived, so we cancelled and ordered different drinks, which showed up around the time we finished. My husband was still finishing his tea, so I asked for a drink menu to pick out something else while he finished. After she brought the menu, she did not come back for at least 15 minutes, after which I eventually waved her down. Yet, all the while, she inevitably turned up AFTER whatever we ordered had shown up to interrupt our meal and ask if we were enjoying our food. Very disappointing."

  • "Lacks honest character, food was just ok certainly not outatanding. Snooty attitudes of "regulars" and condescending service. Would not go back!"
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "For a restaurant that was great a few years ago, we were disappointed at brunch. My usual pasta that I looked forward to sharing and previously one of the best ever was almost too salty to finish. And a couple of dishes were no longer on the menu. Even though Maialino was crowded, the staff and service were good, but I had raved to my out-of-town guests who must have questioned my taste. Be careful Danny, there’s never an excuse for mediocrity in your restaurants."

  • "I love Maialino and have always had wonderful experiences. This experience was a little disappointing in that the pacing of the meal was way off. We complained and it was Handled well and made up for. I will be back!"

  • "Overall, I had a pretty fantastic experience. This was my third visit. It is consistently very good which is a lovely thing to find in the city."

  • "The food at Maialino was very good, but not excellent, and the service (on a Monday night) was slow in coming but rushed when delivering the food or answering questions. Other restaurants at this price point provide service that is far more attentive than we experienced at Maialino."

  • "I've tried a number of restaurants, and coming from a predominantly Italian town, I'm used to really amazing, homemade pasta dishes. The food here is UNBELIEVABLE, freshest pasta I've ever tasted, properly cooked suckling pig, with both creative and classic Italian dishes. There's something on the menu for everyone. Took my partner here for a romantic dinner, but will also be dragging my family back for my graduation celebration! Cannot recommend Maialino enough!!"

  • "Beautiful restaurant, lively and inviting. Had a terrific lunch and felt very relaxed dining there, The olive oil muffin is outstanding! So were the pastas. Can't wait to return to try other dishes. Next time I return to New York City I am planning to have dinner there."
