Diner Reviews
  • "My meal and drink were delicious. The complimentary soup was good and I liked getting three different salsas for the warm, salted tortilla chips. My server was helpful in answering my questions and making suggestions. She was attentive but not overly so. Although the restaurant became crowded while I was dining but I did not feel rushed to make room for others. The happy hour crowd seemed very happy. I found out about this restaurant because of a Groupon coupon. I will definitely make a return visit."

  • "The good news is the food was VERY good. We had a group of 6 that ordered everything from the tampiquena to chicken fajitas to the shrimp/scallop special and flan for dessert. And, of course, guacamole. Everyone was very pleased. The bad news is all of us are pretty sure that there was either very little or no tequila in our margaritas. And it took forever to get them. We got there early on a Saturday and by the time we left, the noise level was pretty loud so definitely not the place for a romantic dinner. I've been here before for lunch and had a better overall experience, so we'll most likely give it another try."

  • "I was looking forward to trying Mago forever. The guacamole was awesome but our dinners were just ok. I had the special short ribs and it was very fatty and not as tender as it was described. My husbands was not impressed with his pork tacos. The drinks were weak.(and we are not drinkers!) For the price we were disappointed. I had a good mojito at the bar but my other drinks tasted just like mix. We were happy to try it and have a night out, but not sure if we would rush back. Service was good and friendly."

  • "Mago offered my table of four a terrific business lunch experience. Two of us were visitors from the city and their comments on the way back to work were these, "Loved the guacamole..." "This is such a fun restaurant, wish it was closer to me..." We all enjoyed a delicious lunch in just under an hour - perfectly meeting our time-frame."

  • "We celebrated my daughter's 34th birthday and even though she hates a fuss she loved the celebration, especially the sombrero! Ole!! Food was wonderful and service amazing! We'll be back !!"

  • "Good Mexican food (although some a bit spicy when said is mild) - service just so so. Our waiter seemed preoccupied and at end of evening, never filled up my water glass or came back to check on us so I could ask for more water."

  • "I've been to Mago Grill a few times now, and it never disappoints. The freshly made guacamole (it's made right there at your table!) is to die for, and so far everything I've ordered has been fantastic. The waiters are polite and efficient, and I always leave the restaurant wanting to come back for more guacamole, it's the best!"

  • "unusual and well-prepared dishes; excellent fresh guacamole prepared table-side with our choice of spiciness; modern, sleek restaurant; definitely worth repeat visits"

  • "Great food and great service. Hot spot so reservations highly recommended. Try the guacamole and margaritas!"

  • "The ambience and service were fantastic! Food was good, but I enjoyed my companion's taco salad more than my selection of three tacos. The taco plate was a little small based on price, but I did enjoy it. If you're looking for great service, be sure to stop by. The servers are friendly and very attentive, checking in often to refill drinks and gauge guests' dining experience."

  • "the food was excellent, our server was pleasant and knowledgeable. I would come back again. I would advise that a reservation is highly recommended."

  • "the service was very inconsistent. Drink orders slow, and then we thought our order was taken and then the server came back and said the person we gave our order to couldn't take orders. A bit of a language barrier. Also noisy and kind of on the dark side. The music was good. Still would recommend because of the food."

  • "The food is outstanding, as are the drinks. Our kids also loved the food. Great Service - Thank you! So far the best Sangria (red-original) that we have had in Chicagoland."

  • "I felt the food was okay, but I felt it was kind of salty. The soup was salty and they made the guac with salt. I am sensitive to salt so maybe this had something to do with the review. overall it was good. the service was good. I felt the prices were kind of high. thank you"

  • "Watered down drinks would be an understatement. At $8.50 per "Margarita" it would be nice if they put ANY Tequila in the drinks. 100 per cent mix!. Food very ordinary. The restaurant better rethink it's drink policy if they expect to get repeat customers."

  • "Mago has the best chips, guacamole, and margaritas!"

  • "We have eaten here 4x for dinner and the food and service have been very good. First time here for lunch and it was not up to par. Note: the guacamole is NOT made table side like it is at dinner. Ours was served from the fridge as it was cold and wet, with soggy tomatoes and flavorless--clearly leftover from another day. Our bowl was not eaten and there were 4 of us, which kind of tells it all. The complimentary tortilla soup was also old and leftover from a previous day. It tasted burnt and the chicken was soggy and brown, which was a clear indication that it was leftover. The fajitas were average and the portions were smaller than dinner but with the same price! Coffee Machine was broken; I would NOT recommend Mago for lunch."

  • "We went to Mago for lunch and it was delicious. It was fairly busy but were seated within 5minutes of arriving. The kids loved the chips and the 3 different kinds of salsa. The table side guacamole was fresh and authentic . I order the burritos rajas and hubby got the carne asada and they were both very good. We liked that unlike the traditional Mexican restaurants, this place was not so rice and beans focused. They were in the food but in just the right amount. It wasn't over cheesy and drenched sauce. This is going to be our new stop for Mexican in the area!"

  • "Not your typical Mexican Restaurant, the place was jumping and the food was above average. Being a Saturday night i gave them a little slack but still the service was far from being acceptable for your above average priced Mexican joint. Drinks took a very long time to arrive and waiter admitted there was a language barrier so it was a little difficult for him to explain the items on the menu. I order the steak special and obviously he did not understand medium rare because when it arrived almost 45 minutes later it was more like medium well. I would have sent it back but we had movie plans and would have never made it there in time. Dessert took almost as long and my wife asked for coffee which they never brought so we just paid the check."

  • "This place was excellent I would recommend the table-side guacamole, it was probably the best appetizer I've had in a long time and the best guacamole for sure! Every dish we ordered was flavorful and the service was so friendly and helpful I can't wait to go back again soon!"

  • "Nice place, better than average Mexican food. But the everyday Mexican food is to expensive. $12 for a burrito, $10 for 3 Tacos with NO sides, 1 Taco is $3.50!"

  • "This was our second visit and was not disappointed. We went on Valentine's Day which is going to be very busy anywhere you go. Made a reservation and we were seated promptly. The complimentary chips and salsas they bring to the table are delicious. Three very different salsas. Hard part is trying to decide on which entree to choose. I am a big fan of mole sauce and they offer some very unique options."

  • "We came to Mago's with a group of 13 people prior to a local comedy show. Great atmosphere. Getting seated for our 4:30 reservation was a challenge on a Sat evening. The restaurant was hesitant when I called to make the reservation in the first place but took my reservation. The hostess called earlier in the day to confirm our reservation and then told me that we would most likely have to wait for our table, but no more than 5-10 minutes. We were not seated until 5:10. From that point on our meal was rushed. The servers did their very best to honor our time constraint and were very friendly. Chips and salsa were ready when we got seated and our server took our drink orders right away. Everyone enjoyed their food. Dining room is loud."

  • "We had a reservation and were seated promptly. It was Valentin'e Day and Friday night, very busy, but service was top notch, Tableside guacamole is the best. Complimentary chicken tortilla soup was tasty. Wish we had room for dessert."

  • "Slightly more upscale Mexican cuisine. Salsa and chips, margaritas and table-side prepared guacamole were all great. The cochinita pibil taco was my favorite out of the three I had (also Pastor and Carne) as it packed a good amount of heat and plenty of flavor. We went here on busy Valentine's day and although it was very crowded, we were seated immediately with our reservation. Service was very polite and responsive."

  • "Crowded. Arrived on time and were given a buzzer. After 30 minutes, returned to host station and inquired about the delay. Was then seated within 5 minutes. Why make a reservation! Why use open table? We were seated by the windows and it was FREEZING! Great salsas on the table, great margaritas- El Noble is highly recommended, great mole, lively atmosphere."

  • "Food was good. Couple little complaints. The girl at front desk when you walk in was actually quite rude. I had my reservation time mixed up and she rude about it. A little disappointing to start the evening off. Waitress was great. Drinks were great. As the restaurant got busier though, people come in and crowd around the bar while waiting for a table. We were sitting next to the bar and this caused us to be basically stuck at our table with people hovering over is as we finished eating."

  • "Not as much the second time. Our server rarely checked on us and the location wasn't even full on a Monday evening. Our food tasted great, as we had experienced before. But the service let us down so much that we left feeling dissatisfied. We had a Groupon to use and because of this, we apparently couldn't partake in the daily drink special, which was a $5 margarita. The groupon had a face value of $30 and we spent $60 in total. all night my wife was looking forward to the chocolate bread pudding. Instead of asking us if we wanted anything to eat after our table had been cleared for at least 10 minutes, she just brought the check. We were so upset about the slow service, we didn't stop her before she quickly left."
