A word from Magnolias
Igniting a culinary renaissance upon opening in 1990, Charleston's most popular restaurant is located at the site of the city's original Customs House (circa 1739). Led by Executive Chef Don Drake, Magnolias remains a forerunner in upscale Southern cuisine, blending traditional ingredients and cooking techniques with a modern flair for artful presentations. • "My wife and I were in Charleston for the weekend celebrating her birthday. We were able to get a late reservation and boy was it worth it! The food was outstanding with excellent presentation. Our waiter "Billy" was very knowledgable and delivered excellent service. Magnolia's is a dining experience you must enjoy. Get your reservation early or you may miss out."

  • "On Sunday 7/20/2014 was our 51th Anniversary, we made reservations for that date, but cancelled for that day because of the weather. So we scheduled the brunch for this past Sunday. We are an older couple, so lunches and brunches works best for us. We will be back since our church is not very from your locations. I had the Crab bisque and parmesan crusted flounder (GREAT), the portion was just right for me. My husband had the BBQ pulled pork, which was right on for him, because he I a very picky eater. At the we shared a slice of pecan pie, should brought a second piece home, delicious. Thank You for a terrific experience"

  • "....and the food was delicious. We went for brunch and could not have been happier with our choices. We started with Peach Fritter Poppers and Housemade Pimento cheese, which were both very, very good. My husband has never liked collards and usually passes them on to me - however he loved Magnolia's! I had the banana pudding stuffed French toast with the most savory applewood smoke bacon and smiled all through breakfast. Really every dish at our table was wonderful. And our server, Keith, was most charming. This place's menu is so awesome I cannot wait to go back and try it for dinner!"

  • "My boyfriend was visiting me in Charleston for his birthday, and I took him to Magnolias for dinner based on a recommendation from a friend. I had high expectations, but we were both absolutely blown away. Our waiter, Ira, was one of the best we've ever had. He had recommendations for every course, was charming and engaging, and absolutely made our experience. The food was phenomenal, both in taste and presentation. Magnolias was the highlight of our weekend!"

  • "Went there based on their reputation and our experience there a few years ago. Food was so so. Pimento cheese appetizer was the highlight of the evening. They have gone downhill unfortunately. Two members if our party had upset stomachs afterwards!"

  • "This was our second visit to Magnolia's. We had a wonderful lunch there last year. This year we got together with family for a long weekend and decided to have dinner. There were 6 in our party, with five being Gluten Free and one who was Vegan. The options suited everyone's dietary needs to a T. Our waiter was extremely knowlegeable and professional. He had a wonderful personality, and saw to our every need. Each course was served in a timely fashion, with our entre's cooked to perfection. If you ever find yourself in Downtown Charleston, make Magnolia's one of your stops; you will not be disappointed."

  • "Ambience, food, wait staff very good. We dined there two, out of the four evenings we stayed in Charleston. Carrey, was our server on the first evening. She was fantastic! Very engaging, and interested in making your experience enjoyable. Still yet, the food was very good. My husband and I enjoyed the buttermilk, boneless fried chicken option. The only thing that marred (slightly) both experiences was the front desk staff. Curt, not welcoming, and pretty much treated all persons with the same poor attitude. Yes, we know they are a busy, popular dining spot, but come on? They behaved as if they were doing you a favor to seat you at your table."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed the duck entree although it would be better if less salt was used. My husband had the seafood grits dish. He said the scallops were very tender and the grits nice and creamy."

  • "We feel sorry for the other restaurants in Charleston...I don't know why you would go anywhere else. The ambiance is wonderful, service impeccable and the food, absolutely outstanding. The couple next to us had never been and we are veterans, making trips to Charleston specifically to visit Magnolia's. They were debating over many dishes and our recommendations were, our favorites (shellfish over grits, fried green tomatoes, scallop appetizer, flounder dinner) overall, we advised that they couldn't make a bad choice. Not only are the entrees exceptional, but the side dishes and flavor profile of the entire meal always complement each other perfectly. Subtle flavors around bold ones, textures, it's simple the ONLY place to eat in Charleston."

  • "We've been coming to Charleston for nearly a decade and we thought it was about time we try this dining-scene staple. We were not disappointed. We had the fried green tomatoes and spring rolls for appetizers - both delicious, although a bit heavy. For entrees, two in our party enjoyed the incredibly rich seafood and grits, I was very happy with the parmesan crusted flounder (great flavor, loved the seasonal vegetables and the light burre blanc sauce), my dad had the pork (kind of had a cajun twist). The pecan pie and creme brule were both classically prepared and delicious, but not outstanding. The service was attentive and adequate, but not exemplary. I would recommend dining here for upscale, classic lowcountry fare."

  • "Everything about this place is overrated....riding on a past reputation........booked 2months in advance and got a seat in the back room which had a table of14 and 12 .....celebrating birthdays.......would not move us to the front..........waiter was disinterested to say the least........recc. The flounder as the chef's speciality........wow it was so over cooked it tasted like paper...no flavour and only warm.........manager offered a free dessert......never again!"

  • "Was expecting better- Food was good not great. Waitress was good. Hostess was AWFUL!!! Arrived 15 minutes early for our 6 pm reservation and was told that they are seating on time and we should wait at the bar. REALLY??? 15 minutes??Was very disappointed from the first step in the door. Made a reservation 2 months in advance and was seated in a corner at the last table in the place. Manager was checking on all the diners around us but never made it to our table. Will not be back."

  • "During our first trip to Charleston, my husband and I spotted Magnolia's, but didn't have a chance to eat there . This time we did, and it was absolutely wonderful. The servers were knowledgeable and considerate, the atmosphere quiet and romantic, and the food and drinks were delicious. I would highly recommend it."

  • "Magnolias provided us with the best meal we ate in Charleston. I highly recommend the seafood and grits; it was amazing! Plenty of seafood and the grits are creamy and luscious. This dish will not disappoint. My husband ordered the Parmesan crusted flounder and it was delicious as well. We ended with the warm strawberry shortcake and it was moist and provided the perfect level of sweetness; the strawberry shortcake ice cream that was on top was divine. When we come back to Charlotte, Magnolias will be the first reservation we make."

  • "Very accommodating. Last minute reservation for group of two, became group of 5. Restaurant was happy to accommodate us at busy dinner hour. This is definitely a landmark location in Charleston."

  • "I have dined at Magnolias several other times and always enjoyed it, but not this trip. Having to walk past the kitchen (double width doorless), the floor virtually covered with food debris, to get to the rear dining room in which we were to be seated was a prelude to an "off" dining experience. I had one of the suggested dishes (flounder) which was a bland, tasteless meal if ever I had one. The server was fine, timely without being intrusive. Sadly, I have had my last meal at Magnolias."

  • "Location is on a street with two of it's sister restaurants. Décor actually matched what was available for on-line for viewing. Not to close table arrangements, with a mix of seating for 2, 4, and large groups. Menu items were inventive and quite tasty. Fried green tomatoes were unique and wonderful. Another gem of a find was the crab risotto with a huarache sauce that came with the grilled salmon. A welcome change from shrimp and grits, was the shell fish and grits --- shrimp, scallops, and lobster. Room temperature was just right and the noise level was such that you could still talk to one another. Staff was attentive and most helpful in describing the selections."

  • "I had the duck breast. It was very pepper hot that I took my knife and scraped off the pepper from the breast. The menu said over blacked green tomatoe but nothing about the breast being spicey. I know I could have mentioned it to the waiter but I just didn't. If someone had asked me how my food was I would have said something. Everything else at the restaurant was fine. Key lime pie was super."

  • "You can't go wrong with Magnolias! The food, service and atmosphere are fabulous! The fried green tomato BLT with pimento cheese is wonderful. I would also order the fried chicken...it's crisp and moist and a mouthful of heaven. The corn is sweet and perfection. Don't miss this place it's wonderful."

  • "My husband and I went to Magnolias to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. When we got to our table we were welcomed with 2 glasses of champagne. We had a wonderful dinner and they also gave us an anniversary dessert at the end of our dinner. Everyone was SO nice and the food was amazing! We highly recommend!"

  • "I always make an effort to come to Magnolia's when I come to Charleston, and am so glad I did. I brought a group of girlfriends for our last meal before the long drive back to DC and the food was simply amazing. The She Crab soup was very, very good and so was my catfish. Our server, Christina, was so attentive and made it a great experience for us that afternoon. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "The fried green tomatoes are the best we've ever had. The portion size of this appetizer allowed us to share them. The Bouillabaisse as always was exceptional with its spicy seafood potlikker. And, the fried chicken was awesome. The boneless breast was moist and succulent with a crispy, crunchy crust. One of our favorite restaurants in Charleston. Very dependable and predictable."

The menu is diverse and offers a great flavor of southern dinning. Our waitress; Nancy, gave excellent customer serive. If you decide to dine here request Nancy for your waitress."
