Even though this place is small, and the neighborhood is not attractive, the food is simply great! The couple at the table next to us overheard our comments about the food and said their selections were equally fantastic. The place was busy the whole time we were there from 12:30 - 1:30 pm on a Sat.

We were not impressed with this restaurant. Food choices were okay, servings were small for what they were charging. Would try it again maybe in a year or two to see if there is any improvement.

We were there on a Thursday night so not packed. Service was a bit slow but we were in no hurry. Did not realize they had no liquor available. Would have been nice to know you could bring your own. Maybe I missed reading that. We had Gumbo and Rustic Tomato soup and both were very good. I ordered Game Hen and again did not realize it took alot longer for it, so we were again waiting. It was ok, not great. Shrimp and Grits ordered by 2 of us and flavor was excellent but only lukewarm. I think they are still finding their way. We would go back and give them another try. I love independent small venues like this.

Rough day at Magnolia's...did not have many things on the menu and when we ordered, what we got was not as described on the menu. When we asked our server why our food was not as described, she shrugged and told us they had someone not show up for work that day. Red velvet waffles did not have berries at all. Steak sandwich did not have mushrooms or onions...just steak. Check charged us for Gumbo we ordered, but they were out of.

We ordered the mac & cheese for an appetizer & it was divine; a little smoky, absolutely amazing. I was REALLY looking forward to the shrimp & grits. I've had some delicious grits but hese were not. They were very bland & the cream sauce failed to add much flavor. My fellow diner ordered the chicken caesar salad with a side of gumbo. The salad was good. The gumbo had a coffee-like aftertaste that neither of us had had with gumbo before; however, he thought the cornbread was amazing. We were there early, but by the time we left(7p.m.), 3 of the items on the limited menu were sold out for the night.

Our first (but not last) visit was somewhat surprising. This is a very small, intimate but friendly dining area with great American Southern cuisine at very fair prices. I'm eager to try more items on their menu.

Food: Think nouvelle Southern cuisine. Our group sampled three appetizers: deviled eggs, chips and dip and macaroni and cheese. By far, the homemade chips and dip were the best. The other appetizers were tasty but unremarkable. Our main courses included, the Osso Bucco lasagna, sweet potato ravioli with chicken and steak and eggs. The Osso Bucco lasagna was wonderful. The sweet potato ravioli was tasty but the chicken and cream sauce almost seemed like an afterthought. The final meal, steak and eggs, was on the verge of being disappointment. We were all surprised by the obvious low quality of steak being served with this dish. Service was the big downfall for us. We arrived at our reservation time and were seated promptly. It went downhill

Has potential, but not ready. Waited 15 min for our reserved table, no space to wait. Once seated, waited 10 min before a server brought us water, but then she realized we didn't have glasses to pour it in. After a few moments, another waitress came over apologetic because she didn't know we were there. We told her we had already placed our order with the other waitress. They didn't have what I asked for, so I ordered a mediocre spinach salad and just ok gumbo, & didn't the get to try the cornbread listed because they were out. My husbands shrimp and grits had good flavor, but the shrimp were not cooked all the way through. The bread pudding was cold in the middle too. I hope they're able to figure out how to make this work well.

Well, I can't believe that we waited so long to try this restaurant, especially since there isn't an ample supply of good Southern cuisine in KC. The food that my wife and I had was great. She had the shrimp and grits and I had the oxtail lasagna. The lasagna was definitely different than any lasagna I have ever had...in a good way. My wife and I both loved the bread pudding as well. It is also refreshing to see a restaurant not overcharge for drinks (sweet tea in our case, of course). The service was excellent as well. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu. I saw someone order the red velvet waffles and I know I'll be back for those and probably other items as well. It was an awesome dining experience.

We took our son to Magnolia's and am sad to say we were disappointed. Everything that could go wrong did. Out of the basics like caesar salad dressing, meat loaf etc. Service was slow to non-existant. After 90 minutes, we had only received a salad and no one knew when our entree would be done. We finally just settled for what we had eaten and walked out, without having dinner. Magnolia's is a wonderful concept, but they need to quickly get a handle on managing a restaurant or the future will not be good.

I really had high hopes for our dinner here after reading some reviews on the place. I will say the service was great and the staff was very pleasant. That said, the food was not all that. We had the mac and cheese appetizer and it was very good. I had the rib-eye and eggs and the steak was a bit tough for a rib-eye, but the flavor was pretty good. I had the grits as a side. My wife is from the South and had the shrimp and grits. We both commented that the grits were VERY cheesey and salty. It is very overpowering and ruined her overall dish. The dessert was so-so as well. I wish I could recommend Magnolia's, but I really can't based on our expereince.

This is easily one of the best-kept secrets in Kansas City. In a little building just to the North of Martini Corner, Magnolia's is a little off the beaten path, but a visit here is worth the hunt. The brunch menu--which is only served on Saturday--is outstanding. Possibly the best brunch in the KC metro, and even better when you think about the price. I know they also have a catering business, but I sincerely hope the restaurant sticks around for a long time.

I had a great experience a Magnolias last week. I started with the Smoked Gouda Macaroni and Cheese. I could have been happy eating that alone. It was creamy with a smokey flavor. For the main course I have the Shrimp and Grit Cake. It was good, however, I would have like the cake to be crisp. It was more like a mound of grits in the middle. The shrimp were huge and the sauce was really tasty. I also got the Chips and Dip to go. Really a must! The dip was so good and full of flavor. The purple chips are harder than you imagine, but I am partial to Sweet Potato chips so I was happy. I will definitely come back.

Magnolia's hasn't been opened very long & just switched to a new menu so the few missteps we experienced will (hopefully) get resolved soon. Definitely worth the trip for the terrific gumbo - just the right amount of spice and good depth too. One friend had the shrimp & grits and said is was very, very good. Another friend was unable to say the same about her red velvet waffle dish. The wrong waffles came out with the plate and part of the dish never arrived. The Gouda pimento cheese dip has a nice flavor but the corn grit chips (more like tortilla chips) were in such small pieces, it was hard to sample. Overall, all the flavors were good and service was very friendly. We'll go back to try again!

There were five of us in the group so we were able to taste test the BLT. the biscuit breakfast and the sweet potato chips. The person who had the salad refused to share because it was so tasty. We did not get to dessert. We're going back for sure!!

We had group of 10 and a 6:00 reservation. We shared appetizers and were happy with the variety of selections and the ease of sharing. They have delicious home-made potato chips, made from sweet potatoes and a variety of other potatoes served with a nicely seasoned "butter." Specialty deviled eggs were a hit as was the N"Awlins flavor captured in the gumbo and other soups. Dinners ordered by our group ranged from "The Morning After," best described as a Southern Eggs Benedict, with crispy ham, fresh greens and egg atop a flaky cheese biscuit. Great for dinner or breakfast! The scallops were perfectly prepared as was the Red Velvet Waffle,,,,,,yes, you heard it. We took our own wine and paid a $10/bottle corking fee

Ordered the beet salad, they were out of beets, ordered the scallops, they were out of scallops, ordered the shrimp entree they had to go the grocery to get more shrimp. We were there the week before, ordered steak, they were out of steak. Chef Shanita has taken Southern comfort/Soul food to a whole new level in Kansas City. The menu is inspired and rife with phenomenal comfort dishes that all have personality. Five people in our party ... four of got shrimp and grits. And it was to die for. A couple things to note: The place is cozy which is both good and bad. The kitchen's hood appears not to be working at full-tilt -- so at a couple points there was a haze in the restaurant. Both can be overlooked when you take your first bite though. The place has no sense of urgency -- it's a festive, yet laid-back establishment. (Read that: if you're in a hurry, this is not the place for you.) Grab your friends and a bottle of wine (since they are sans liquor license) and enjoy!

Went to Magnolia's with a party of 7 and really got to explore the menu. Everyone was very happy with the food. Standouts included the pimento cheese spread, the red velvet waffle, the sweet potato risotto, the blueberry white chocolate bread pudding, and the scrambled eggs--my family is still talking about the scrambled eggs! Service was knowledgeable and made good recommendations. They put us at a dining room table in the second room that made us feel like we were in someone's home. Currently, the restaurant doesn't have a liquor license, but they allow you to bring your own wine for a $10/bottle corkage fee and we were just as happy with that arrangement. We will definitely go back and support this restaurant.

We had a very sweet young woman serving us. She was attentive. Unfortunatly they were out of the first three things I ordered. None of which the server told us about until we ordered. The food came out in a timely manner and was presented very well. The server brougt our check. I told her we wanted dessert and she said there was no dessert. We were very disapointed to say the least. After a few minutes they were able to produce one bread pudding. The concept is great, talented chef, but they need to get the ventilation system fixed and stay on top of food prep.
