Diner Reviews
  • "Food was delicious. The steak left me wanting more - it was sooo good! The ambiance was dark with lit candles - very romantic. I recommend this restaurant for the food alone."

  • "Our first time at Magnolia Cafe was on a Thu night. There was a Groupon for it and we decided to give it a try. We thought the place was absolutely lovely. Both the food and the service were great. The interior creates a nice vibe: not overwhelming, instead warm and inviting, with the tables not too close together as often happens in smaller restaurants. We felt comfortable and welcome. Will definitely go back and this time with a couple of friends."

  • "Saturday dinner was the third time in as many months that we dined here. The first time was Sunday brunch where both the food and service was good. However, it was probably a result of the kitchen and staff not being taxed since the restaurant was half full. The second time was a Friday night that was busy, but not packed. The service was definitely a step down, but the food was consistent with our first dinner. This last venture, however, left me wondering if we will be returning. The service by our waiter was atrocious and half of our party found the main course of short ribs bad in every way possible. Unfortunately, our waiter never stopped by between taking our dinner order and our desert order to ask about our meal."

  • "our server really had an attitude. I really don't think he wants that job. really bad"

  • "Magnolia continues to be a bright shining oasis in a transitional neighborhood, as unlikely a spot for this quality of food and service as you will find in Chicagoland. Can get encroaochingly crowded at peak hours but there's nothing as good for miles in the Uptown area. Reasonably priced and huge portions."

  • "This little neighborhood gem is outstanding! We have been here several times, and the food is always on par. Service is great, and the wine selection is really good. Dont miss the desert! Its worth the extra calories!!"

  • "Magnolia Café has a promising menu and atmosphere. However, we will not be back. First is the food: The concepts presented in the menu were appealing and creative. But the execution of those ideas were very poor. Neither I nor my guest enjoyed our entrees. They were heavy, over salted, lacking the layers of preparation that you would expect with the price of the meal. We about 35% too much for the food that I received, and I didn't even like the food in the first place. The second reason for the disappointment was the general attitude of the host. Our server was friendly, but the host was scowly and not eager to accommodate requests."

  • "Hadn't been here in a while and was quickly reminded why I enjoy this place so much. Food and service were very good. Several new, creative items on the menu. Easy to place custom-made orders (my wife is gluten-free). The only downside was the back room was closed so the restaurant seemed cramped wtih some diners nerarly sitting on top of one another, like the old days. Otherwise, we had a grand time with an out of town foodie who was impressed with his meal. We will be back again soon. Mitch"

  • "I was not impressed by Magnolia Cafe. While the dining atmosphere and service were good, I was saddened to learn that the restaurant only served RC Cola products when my date asked for a Diet Coke. I also did not enjoy my salad, as the lettuce was served whole, intentionally I presume, and the dressing was left at the bottom of the plate. My date did not enjoy his pasta with chicken, as it only included dark meat, something I've never seen at a restaurant in the past."

  • "Magnolia Cafe is truly a neighborhood gem. Everything is in order here. Service is an A+ from a woman named Alex. I was ready for a cocktail that I had never tried before. I ordered the Magnolia Manhattan and it did the job. I had 2 more. My wife's order of a special black cod and my order of the 10oz. tenderloin arrived perfectly cooked. The flavors were top notch. The chef and his crew raise the bar on brussel sprouts. Totally recommend this place for a romantic evening. Seating is a little intimate. Business type dinner with an energetic group larger than 4 would be a little much for the dining room."

  • "If you have not been here yet.,.you need to go! The food is absolutely incredible. On par every time we have been there. And its a comfortable atmosphere. Very friendly staff, and for what you get, affordable. You will not be disappointed if you try this hidden gem! AMAZING!"

  • "Came in from the suburbs for something different, and Magnolia did not disappoint. Great change of scene from suburban dining. Creative meals with wonderful service. Well worth the drive. Will be back."

  • "I have been enjoying Magnolia since it opened. I don't dine there very often, perhaps twice yearly. When it opened and up until recently the food was very good. I dined there last week and was very dissappointed. -two dinner knives & 2 knives (so a new pair did not need to be set??). -some tables had bread, ours did not. -8:30 reservation, was seated at 9:15 -meal too nearly an hour to be served. -lobster bisque was watery and had to ask if it was what I ordered. -my lamb entree was tasteless. So dissappointed, this used to be a favorite."

  • "Went to Magnolia Café last night and think I have a new favorite! Love the décor and even though we didn't sit at the bar, I want to come back just to enjoy having a cocktail - maybe the right words are quaint and sophisticated. From the French onion soup, to the entres - every bite was delicious. Loved our waitress, she was just great. This is the kind of restaurant, they take food and wine seriously, but it isn't uptight. Interesting menu, not trying to overreach, but diverse enough everyone can fine something. The ambiance is so pleasant. I want to go back tonight! Just me and my husband for a cozy dinner and some romance."

  • "One visit on a snow day in Chicago, and 3 tables were occupied; with that said service should have been better but staff were more bar chatter instead of attending the 3 tables. The food was ok and display was good but not great because it lacked flavor. Parking was rather difficult as well. Its great for a neighborhood gem, but no place to constantly commute if your not living in the area. All it takes is one visit."

  • "we had great food, great service , and the atmosphere was very quiet and relaxing. Only thing- kind of on the expensive side. Which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 but otherwise go for it!"

  • "I love Magnolia $25 unlimited mimosas with a brunch entree--it's a steal really! This was my 3rd brunch @ Magnolia. I highly recommend the Smoked Trout Hash--so flavorful and filling and the Steak Burrito (when they have it on the specials menu). My favorite mimosa flavor is the mango, but they also have traditional, apricot, or raspberry. If mimosas aren't your thing, they have unlimited Bloody Mary's, too. Or you can just get food and skip the cocktails, but that's no fun. Our waiter was super-attentive with bringing our drinks and the staff was also very accomodating when I called to say that I was running 10 minutes late and our party would be 5 instead of 6. Delicious way to spend a Sunday."

  • "From the tasty drinks from the bar to a solid menu the Magnolia Cafe can get loud & busy during the weekend- but that's because the locals have come to know it's reliably good and never rushed. Try to make it back at least once a month and will continue to do so."

  • "Took a group of 9 for dinner Friday night, surprisingly good food and a very attentive wait staff. Pork Trio was outstanding, as was Skirt Steak, sides were good solid comfort food. I wish I lived closer to Magnolia Cafe. Reminded me a bit of the Coach House if you like that place."

  • "There are lots of great places to eat in Chicago. We are lucky to be able to eat out whenever and wherever we want. We've chosen to go back to Magnolia 3 times in the last 9 months or so because it is so perfect. The ambiance is lovely. The food is creative and wonderfully executed. It's unique without being annoying as so many resturaunts are. The portion sizes are big, so I always have leftovers ! They have a great wine list, affordable and fun. Desserts are homemade, even the ice cream. LOVE this place."

  • "Had a group of 10 an made reservations the night before. Our pre-party was running late, and they held our table without a problem. Food was great, service was attentive -- AND it was 1/2 price wine night. Tough to beat."

  • "This is my second time to this restaurant and service was very slow, just like the first time. The seats are far too close; I was bumped in the back of my chair for 2 consecutive hours as diners and staff kept walking past me. It's unfortunate because the food is truly very good."

  • "i went with my husband and two toddlers. it was our first time here and came for brunch. we live not too far from the restaurant. we were seated right away, the ambiance was okay, a little too warm for our standards. it took our server 30 mins before he got to us to take our order...with an apology. another 15 mins to get my cup of coffee. it was a good hour before we were served our food. with two toddlers we are looking for places that will serves us our meal fast before tantrums start. good thing our two boys was very cooperative. i had called in shortly after we left to give them a short review. the person i was talking to didn't even ask for my name, i had a feeling that she will just brush off my complaint. will not come back."

  • "We had a large group and they made it very comfortable for us. Our service was great and the food was creative and awesome. My dad was a huge fan of the smoked trout hash and I loved the smoked salmon. Based on everyone's feeling on their food, you can't really go wrong. The only small issue we had was that the petite filets were more medium well than medium rare, but they still tasted great. Highly recommend."

  • "I had family in from out of town and wanted to take them to a good restaurant with a local "neighborhood" feel, so they'd get a real sense of Chicago...not just the tourist's view. We went to Magnolia Café for dinner on a very rare quiet night. The food was incredible and the service was amazing. It was exactly what I wanted my visitors to experience. They loved it and were thrilled to see a side of Chicago you can't see from the Michigan Avenue."

  • "This was 2nd time we went for a late Sunday brunch. Although it was clearly past the busiest time, servers seem indifferent. Never come around for coffee or water refills. Food is okay, but there are many better places. I wouldn't go back or recommend it."
